REFLECTION: John the Baptist began to preach repentance of sin when he was about 30 years old Shor tly after he baptized Jesus, he announced Him to be the Sun of Righteousness who the Jews had been waiting a long time for This Messiah was first proclaimed by the prophet Malachi around 430 BC Malachi 4:2 But for you who revere my name the sun of r ighteousness shall r ise, with heal ing in its wings Jesus is the new pathway into the kingdom of God We all have been banished from the kingdom of heaven because of our sinful nature After John the Baptist announces that Jesus, who creates a highway to heaven, is God’s Son, the wor ld changes Jesus’ entire life is about gath er ing God’s children back into the kingdom All of humankind was alienated from the r ighteousness of God until Chr ist was bor n of spir it and flesh The capacity to have newness of life has been grant ed by God Romans 6:4 Therefore we have been bur ied with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Chr ist was raised from the dead by the glor y of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life Those who accept the gift of the baby Jesus gain the blessing of immor tality Chr ist, bor n on Chr istmas mor ning, rescues us from the bondage of death Merr y Chr istmas!

The Chr istmas stor y consists of unassuming characters John the Baptist (Literally, John the Baptizer”) was one of them The advent of Jesus Chr ist into our wor ld shows that the giants of the Chr istian faith are common people such as Mar y and Joseph, lowly herdsmen and a man called John the Baptist
Question: What can we possibly lear n from a preacher who clothed himself with a gar ment made of camel’s hair, held together with a leather b e l t a r o u n d h i s wa i s t a n d l i ve d o n a d i e t consisting of locusts and wild honey? (Matthew 3:4)
As the forer unner of Jesus, his announcement of the coming of Jesus was an impor tant role in the greatest stor y ever told He was the voice prophesied by Isaiah, the prophet, cr ying in the wilder ness “ prepare the way of the Lord ” (Isaiah 40:3) The prophecy was fulfilled some 400 years later (Matthew 3:1 6; John 1:23) John p r e a c h e d t h e b a p t i s m o f r e p e n t a n c e i n preparation for the coming of Jesus

Michael (Mike) McComis passed away peacefully at his home, Friday No vember 25th 2022, with his wife Sara, their daughter and her hus band, his grandkids and his dog Molly, by his side Mike was a lifelong Plain well resident He gradu ated from Plainwell High School in 1976 He was successful in many trades but settled into a career of manufacturing main tenance at Aunt Millies, retiring in 2020 His true pas sion was being outdoors A few of his favorite places were deer camp, the pole barn and the cabin in Mancelona Every year he looked forward to family trips to the cabin with his brother Pat, Pat's wife Julie and his nieces and nephews In his free time he would always welcome friends into his barn where he enjoyed working on cars, watching Nascar and football, gun smithing or having a few beers Mike was an avid hunter and loved shooting guns He always enjoyed when his friends and family would bring guns over for some target practice However, Mike's greatest joy came from being with his grandchildren, Kacie, Kaden, Noelyn and Reagan He loved any and all the time he had with them but especially gardening, riding the Ranger and going out to breakfast He is lovingly sur vived by his wife, Sara, brother Pat (Julie) McComis, daughter Erin (Christopher) Hiemstra, his grandson Kaden, granddaughters Kacie, Noelyn and Reagan, his nieces and nephews Brent, Matt, Katie, Ian, Sean and Dana also two very special "like" sons, Kelly Todd and James Dalrymple He is preceded in death by both of his parents, Curtis and Shirley (Mills) McComis, infant sister Julie and his two very best friends, Danny Dal rymple and Rick Lynch In honor of Mike any donations can be made in his name to the NRA (National Rifle As sociation)

Patricia King passed away on November 29th, 2022 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kala mazoo, MI She was a 1958 graduate of Otsego High School She was born Jan uary 25, 1940 to Carol and Juanita (Kennedy) VanDer hoff Pat had 7 sisters and 2 brothers Her pride and joy were her family, children, grandchildren, great grand children, several nieces, nephews, and friends On Au gust 31, 1973 in Otsego she married Dean King who passed away May 22, 2011 Surviving are her children, Bryon (Kandy) Campbell, of Huntsville, AL, Deborah (Ed) Mendez of Kalamazoo, Dianna Parker of Kalama zoo and friend Dave McMurray of Otsego She was preceded in death by her parents Pat worked in the Medical field for 28 years until her retirement in 2010 She then went back to work for an additional 2 years after retirement Pat was an accomplished trap and skeet shooter and a member of Gun River, Fen nville Gun Clubs and Grand Valley Cap and Ballers Life member of the National Muzzleloader and Rifle Asso ciation as well as the NRA She was a member of the Michigan State Muzzle loading and Shotgun Commit tee and inducted into the Manistee Old Fort Ren dezvous Hall of Fame in 2015 She was a member of the MLRA International Muzzle Loading Rifle and Shot gun Team for 2 years and placed 4th in the world when she competed in Germany She was a life member of the VFW and a State of Michigan DNR hunter safety instructor Pat also was a member of the Women’s Re lief Corp, and the Allegan County Medical Assistant As sociation and served as their President for one term Friends may visit with Pat’s family from 6 8 PM, Sunday, December 4, 2022, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where a funeral service will take place at 11:00 A M , Monday, December 5, 2022 with Cele brant Bill Rose officiating Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery Contributions or Donation in lieu of flowers can be made to Rose Arbor (Centrica Care Navigators) in Kalamazoo, MI

In loving memory of Linda Metzger, who passed away peacefully November 26, 2022 in Arizona where she and her husband of 66 years, Max Metzger, had recently moved Linda was born in Plainwell on August 25, 1938 and had spent most of her life in the area In her early years she worked as a secretary for many large companies and enjoyed showing horses with her children Later in life the family moved to Colorado where she trained horses After that her and Max spent many years to gether truck driving across the country Linda leaves behind her husband Max, three children Terri and John Metzger and Joan Burnell, three grandchildren Jeff, Monica, and Matt, and several great grandchildren According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and there is no visitation scheduled at this time

Shirley passed Tuesday, November 29, 2022, sur rounded by her loving fam ily in Martin She was born April 4, 1936 in Plainwell, the daughter of Russell and Florence (Knight) Curry Shirley stayed at home and raised her family and when her children were old enough she began working as the manager at the Carriage Stop Restaurant in Martin for many years As a young woman she enjoyed bowling on area leagues and playing softball Shirley loved attending her grandchildren and great grandchil dren’s sporting events, flower gardening and doing puzzles Shirley liked sitting on the front porch of her cottage on Gun Lake or on the back seat of the pon toon boat She was a member of the Red Hat Society and volunteered at the Martin Food Pantry for more than 10 years On October 19, 1956 in Otsego she married Dale Buskirk who passed away in 2013 Sur viving are her children, Randy Buskirk, Michael (Linda) Buskirk and Lisa (Mark) Brooks; 8 grandchildren, Brandi, Michelle, Jessica, Justin, Wesley, Travis, Megan and Tiffany; 17 great grandchildren; brother, Jack Curry and several sisters in law, nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brothers, Russ, Jerry, Bob and Larry Friends may visit with Shirley’s family starting at 1:00 P M , Friday, December 2, 2022 at the Martin United Methodist Church, until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 P M , with Pastor Dan Beyer officiating Burial will follow at South Martin Cemetery Contributions in memory of Shirley may be made to the Martin Food Pantry
