“Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.” (Isaiah 40:1)
Christmas is a sad season for many people. The pain of human loss remains but memories last forever. This is where the role of a pastor (Shepherd) comes into play. A seminary professor was known to have repeatedly said something like this to his students: “There will be broken hearts in every Sunday service of worship. Have a word for them.” The good news is that God, who gave His only Son, has a word of comfort for us. God knows what it means to lose a Child. God not only identifies with human suffering but also stands beside us in the midst of it.
The surprising truth is that the story of Christmas begins with a word of comfort. Isaiah was known as the Messianic prophet. This means one who foretold the birth of Christ (Isaiah 7:14). In Isaiah 40:1 (quoted above) God’s people were in need of comfort.
Israel was divided (Sound familiar?). God may have spoken a word of judgment or rebuke. Rather, God, speaking through the prophet, spoke words of comfort. The message of this chapter is that God will not only deliver Israel from captivity (then), but one day God will come to rule the earth and judge all people. Israel and Judah will be reunited and the glory of the Lord will be revealed (40:5). In another image (Isaiah 40:11), God is like a tender shepherd who “tends His flock… gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart…”
What does this mean for us today? The answer may be found in one of our church traditions. Every Sunday in Advent (Four Sundays) we light a different Advent candle. One candle stands for hope, another joy, another peace and another love. The point: God is our source of comfort. Hope brings comfort. Joy brings comfort. Peace brings comfort. Love brings comfort.
The good news is that God offers a word of comfort to all who believe.
Prayer: Dear Lord, this is exactly where we want to be … close to Your heart! In Your strong name. Amen.

Hazel S. WARNER AGE 85 - OTSEGO, MI
James A. GARDNER AGE 88 - PLAINWELL, MI
James A. Gardner, a Kalamazoo-area businessman and beloved husband of the late Delores Gardner (Vigard), died Nov. 21 at the age of 88. He was born June 24, 1933, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to the late Theodore and Helen Gardner (Sharkey), the fourth child to arrive into a busy and full household that would eventually extend to five boys and a girl. Jim would remain close to his brothers and sister for the entirety of their lives. After gaining a bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati and a Master of Business Administration from Indiana University, he worked for 20 years as an executive in various manufacturing companies, including the former Angle Steel in Plainwell, before striking out on his own, owning a Kalamazoo forklift company and a fiberglas manufacturer near White Pigeon over the years. He also taught briefly in Western Michigan University’s graduate business program and was the author of “Common Sense Manufacturing,” published in 1992. Jim was wellread across a wide variety of subjects and a keen duplicate bridge player. However, nothing gave him more consistent pleasure throughout his life than getting together with his extended family, which grew over the years to include more than 50 people. Jim and his wife hosted many of them at a celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary in 2006 and at the marriage of his son David in 1997. Jim was preceded in death in 2017 by his wife of 60 years, Delores, a former teacher in the Plainwell school system, and by three of his brothers. He is survived by his son, James Gardner Jr. (Sarah) and their children Isabelle, Henry and Nicholas; by son David Gardner (Christine) and their children Alyssa and Erika; and by a brother and sister. A funeral mass was celebrated on Nov. 30, 2021 at St. Margaret’s Church in Otsego, Mich., where he was a parishioner for more than 40 years. Jim’s burial was alongside his wife in Fort Custer National Cemetery later that day. Hazel passed away Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at her home in Otsego. She was born March 8, 1936 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of William and Sylvia (Born) Try. For over 20 years she worked at Perrigo until her retirement. Hazel loved her family, animals, music, shopping and trips to the casino. On January 23, 1954 she married her sweetie, Trevor Warner who preceded her in death. Surviving are her daughters, Terri (Richard) Story and Tamera Warner; grandson, Rob (Jessica) Daniels-Warner; sister, Marcia Butler along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Rodney; grandson, Ryan Story; son-in-law, Randy Warner; brothers, Roger and Ronald and sister, Nancy. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial celebration will be held from 1-4 P.M., Saturday, January 22, 2022, at the Gun Plain Township Hall, 381 8th St., Plainwell. Light refreshments will be served. Contributions in memory of Hazel may be made to the Disabled American Veterans. Kenneth D. REED AGE 64 - ALLEGAN, MI
Ken passed away Monday, November 29, 2021 at his home in Allegan, surrounded by family. He was born August 6, 1957 in Plainwell, the son of Adolph and Madeline (Risner) Reed. Ken worked as a logger, at Allegan Tubular and B & G Custom Works until his retirement in 2016. Prior to and after retiring Ken enjoyed working at the Swan Lake Store which was more of a hobby than a job. Ken always enjoyed spending time with his kids and granddaughters. He was very united with his siblings and his mom. He was a very caring and humble man who always would help out. As a younger man he liked hunting raccoons and deer. Ken was active in the Allegan Gym until his knees started bothering him. On July 11, 1981 at home in Shelbyville, he married Dorothea Pinks who survives. Also surviving are his children, Amy Reed of Martin, Ken Paul (Melina) Reed of Otsego and Anthony Reed of Allegan; grandchildren, Taylor, Kennedi, Abigale, Nyla and Sophia; his mother, Madeline; siblings, Clovis, Clarence, Sue, Wanda, Jo, Jerry, Ruth, Donna, Doug, John and Eric; many nieces and nephews and special friends Gary, Steve and Mike from the Swan Lake Store. He was preceded in death by his father. Friends may visit with Ken’s family starting at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, December 4, 2021, at the Orangeville Pentecostal Church until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 P.M., with Pastor Mike Risner officiating. Burial will follow at South Martin Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Ken may be directed to his family.

Emily F. KUBIN AGE 98 - OTSEGO, MI
Emily passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at her home in Otsego. She was born March 2, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Paul and Stephania (Dzurnik) Ballay. Emily had many jobs and for 15 years was the secretary at St. Margaret School until her retirement. In her free time Emily enjoyed raising chickens, gardening, flowers, watching nature especially birds and deer and the love of her family and farm. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and crafting. Emily was a member of the Crystal Club, Corporal Works of Mercy and First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association. On June 26, 1943 in Chicago, she married Louis Kubin who preceded her in death. Surviving are her daughters, Patricia (Milt) Garber of Nevada, Susanne (Robert) Knaus of Florida, Emilia (Doug) Rex of Otsego and Mary (John) Miller of Otsego; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Frances Wagner and Illene Oetman; sister-in-law, Jean Balley along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; brothers, Joseph, Paul and Edwin Ballay. Maurice R. SIMPSON AGE 87 - WYOMING, MI
Maurice passed away Tuesday, November 30, 2021 in Wyoming. He was born June 20, 1934 in Watson Township, the son of Clarence and Florence (Blair) Simpson. Maurice was a 1953 Martin High School graduate. He worked for Valley Metal and retired from the state bridge crew due to an injury in the early 70’s. Maurice loved working with his hands and could build anything. He had been an assistant leader with the Boy Scouts of America when his boys were younger. Surviving are his sons, Harold Simpson and Mark Simpson; grandson, Tim and brother, Roger (Jane) Simpson. He was preceded in death by his children, Ruth and Larry and 6 siblings, Betty McDonald, Clayton Simpson, Bob Simpson, Lorraine Henry, Geraldine Blake and John Simpson. Friends may visit with his family starting at 10:00 A.M., Monday, December 6, 2021, at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Ray Brown officiating.
