A brief history....

The Community Shoppers Guide was founded and published in 1940 by Howard Bargwell. He did all the work by hand. The paper was distributed once a month to approximately 1000 Otsego residents for free. The paper changed ownership through the years, and was bought in 1945 by Grant “Mack” Bennett. He increased circulation into Plainwell and delivery to once a week, distributing to approximately 3500 residents.

In 1970 computerized typesetting was offered and purchased to improve the publication. Circulation was increased to 8500 residents. In 1974, due to the high costs of the postal service, the Community Shoppers Guide started its own delivery system. In 1975 it relocated to the Downtown Otsego office that it is currently in now. Ron Bennett, Mack’s son, took over ownership in the early 1980s. Then, Ron’s son, Marty Bennett, took over in the early 2000s.

Mary Ann KLEINBRINK AGE 73 - OTSEGO MI

Mary Ann passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, Sunday, December 1, 2024, at her home in Otsego

She was born, January 28, 1951, in Plainwell the daughter of Motley and Garnet (Story) Tefft Mary Ann graduated from Otsego High School in 1969 and worked as a long-distance phone operator until she married and started her family While raising her children, she was the vocal music teacher at the Otsego Baptist Academy until her retirement after 20 years in 2006 Mary Ann was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Otsego where she served as the choir director for many years On August 22, 1970, she married Mark Kleinbrink who survives Also surviving are her children Nicole (Doug) MacVean of Martin, Stephanie Hyet of Otsego and Laura (Tim) Bedell of Alamo Township; grandchildren, Samantha (Ryan) McFanin, Bobbi (Skylar) Bedell, Jonah (Lydia) Hyet, Kobi (Emma) Bedell, Matthew (Paige) MacVean, Emma (Jordan) Senters, Ashley Bedell, Lucy Bedell, Amy Bedell, Emily Bedell and Oakley Bedell; greatgrandchildren, Crew, Eloise, Tilly, Rowan, Quinn and Ava; sisters, Margaret “Peggy” Pfau and Sandra Tefft along with several nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Diane Conklin A funeral service took place at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, Thursday, December 5, 2024, with Joel Thompson ofﬁciating Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego Contributions in memory of Mary Ann may be directed to Centrica Care Navigators or the Alzheimer’s Association

Ivan Mac Sooy, passed away peacefully at his residence and went to his heavenly home on December 2, 2024 He was born on November 29, 1941 in Plainwell, MI, the son of Arthur L and Greta Cram Sooy As a young man he joined US Navy Seabees and traveled extensively Mac retired from Flowserve, formerly "Durametallic" He loved being active with ﬁshing, hunting, traveling to Montana gardening tractors and a love for beagles Mac’s smile and laughter will be dearly missed by his wife of 29 years Paula (Pinks); step daughter Amy (Jeff) Haight of Shelbyville; two sisters: Ruby Robart of Lansing, Ginger Bish of North Carolina; a special hunting partner and nephew, Steve Pencola of Howell; 7 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren (Mac loved his grandchildren dearly!); and he had numerous nieces and nephews Mac was preceded in death by his parents; his son Ivan Mac Jr , brothers: James, Arlyn Bob , Arthur Jr ; sister: Myrtle Pencola

I believe there is room for hope because God is hope A discouraged psalmist (Psalm 62:5), a persecuted Apostle Paul (Romans 15:13) and a hope-filled Apostle Peter (I Peter 1:3) all claimed the promises of our faithful God Without God there is no hope because Hope was bor n in a manger so long ago

1 HOPE IS SOMETHING WE CLING TO In 1741 George Fr ider ic Handel wrote one of the greatest orator ios of all time: “Messiah ” The reason it became so popular is that it builds up to the “Hallelujah Chor us” which proclaims Jesus as our ultimate “King of kings and Lord of lords And He shall reign forever and ever ” That is the “hope we profess ”

2 HOPE IS BASED ON WHO GOD IS It was Chr istmas Day when some Amer ican soldiers came upon an or phanage just outside a village in France They decided to buy some candy and gifts for the children They were war mly received with the exception of a young gir l who had lost both of her parents She was quiet and sad One of the soldiers noticed her and asked what she would like for Chr istmas The little gir l said, “I want somebody to hold me ” The good news is that whatever we exper ience we can be sure God will be present because He who promised is faithful ”

3 HOPE IS FAITH LIVED OUT “Now, faith is being sure of what we hope for and cer tain of what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1) We cannot see what the future holds but God can We cannot see what is around the cor ner, but we can be sure that God will be there to meet us One day we will understand all of the myster ies of life (I Cor inthians 13:12) In the

But sometimes regifting can be generous Jesus, in fact, tells us to regift All throughout the gospels, Jesus keeps telling his followers to regift his love He says, “as I have loved you, so you must love others ” Jesus wants his love for you to pass through you to others That’s how Christianity works Christians are called to be a bunch of regifters, sharing the gift of Christ’s body broken and blood shed for us with other people in need of his love
