“You are the light of the world …” (Matthew 5:14)

What would we do without light?

We walk into a room, and without thinking about it, we turn on the light switch. We take electricity for granted until we are without it. Light is more than the absence of darkness. It is absolutely essential for living.

Early in my ministry at the beginning of a worship service, the electricity suddenly went off. I then welcomed the people with the remark, “we are ‘delighted’ to have you worshipping here today.” Bad joke! After the service, one of my back row friends remarked, “Yes, and we thought you would never see the end of your sermon!”

When the Bible talks about God, light is used as a metaphor. Near the beginning of the beautiful story of creation we read the words, “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” (Genesis 1:3). The metaphor appears in John’s account of the gospel to describe who Jesus is. “In him was life, and that life was the light of men” (John 1:4). “The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world” (John 1:9).

Among other titles, Jesus described Himself as “The light of the world” (John 8:12). In I John 1:5 we read, “God is light, in him there is no darkness at all.” Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) is considered the greatest sermon ever preached. Jesus began His sermon by saying, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). We are to share the light of Christ in the city (5:14), at home (5:15) and to the world (5:16) in order to bring glory to God.

John Maxwell tells the story about a lighthouse keeper who worked on a rocky stretch of coastline. He received his new supply of oil once a month to keep the light burning. Not being far from the shore, he had frequent guests.

One night a woman from the village begged for some oil to keep her family warm. Another time a father asked for some to use in his lamp. Another needed some to lubricate a wheel. Since all the requests seemed legitimate, the lighthouse keeper tried to please everyone and grant the requests of all.

Toward the end of the month, however; he noticed the supply of oil was very low. Soon it was gone, and the beacon went out. That night, several ships were wrecked and lives were lost. When the authorities investigated, the man was very repentant. To his excuses and pleading their reply was, “You were given oil for one purpose – to keep that light burning!” The light of Christ is our world’s only hope for survival. The point is clear: Light up your world! Prayer: Dear Lord, may Your light shine through me today. In Your strong name. Amen

Christina passed peacefully on January 4, 2020. She was born January 26, 1947 to the late Jack and Barbara Kelly. Christina enjoyed a life full of travel, love of cooking and especially art. After living all over the Midwest as a youth, Christina’s parents moved to Plainwell where Christina graduated from Plainwell High School in 1965. Following high school, Christina attended Ferris State University where she fell in love with her first husband, Joseph Langkamp. Joe and Chris married at St. Margaret’s Church in 1967. Joe and Chris grew their loving family while they were stationed across the United States and Europe. When Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Joe Langkamp retired from Army in 1981, Joe and Chris put down roots in Plainwell, Michigan, where they raised their children. Chris attended Kendall School of Design in Grand Rapids where she refined her love of color and textiles. Her art was inspired by the Southwest’s culture, landscape and history she experienced while stationed in Arizona. As an artist, Chris traveled throughout the Midwest presenting her textiles at art shows and receiving commissions. In 2010, Chris met and fell in love with the second love of her life, David Campbell, who survives. Also surviving are her children, Kelly Langkamp (Rod) HerzogGray, Lt. Col. (Retired) Keirya Langkamp (Lt. Col. (Retired) Joseph McLaine), Trenton (Katy) Langkamp, Trevor Langkamp; grandchildren, Lauren, Alexis, Avery, Carson, Logan, Hudson, Weston, and Skye; siblings, Roberta (Frank) Willis, Robert Kelly, Jacqueline Eckert, Colleen (Mark) Salton. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Lt. Col. (Retired) Joseph Langkamp; and sister, Mary (George) Dunn. Relatives and friends may meet with Christina’s family on Friday, January 10 from 1:00-2:00pm at the Beeler-Gores Funeral Home, Middleville, MI where a funeral service will be held at 2:00pm. A private burial will take place at the Hillside Cemetery on Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to Gilda’s Club.

Tom passed away Sunday, January 5, 2020 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born July 6, 1947 in Battle Creek the son of Richard and Ellyn (Thomas) Otte. For 20 years he had worked as a driver for Fed Ex until his retirement. Tom loved the open road and in his retirement had hauled boats and trailers. He enjoyed hot rods, motorcycles, traveling, spending time in the sun by the beach and following U of M football. He was happiest sipping coffee and enjoying good conversation with family and friends. On April 15, 1972 he married Deborah Loftis who survives. Also surviving are his children, Kyle (Lisa Cass) Otte and their children, Mesa Rose, Aslyn and Morrison of Colorado, Ashley (Gracie) Otte and their children, Joshua and London of California, Colin Otte of California, Carly (Ryan Cook) Otte of Colorado and Oakley Otte and Rylee Boland of California; sister, Linda (Mike) Rosenow of Harbor Springs, special cousin, Cid Richardson, Mike, Carole and Kay Otte of Montana. Tom is also survived by Dianne, Barry, Chris, Doug, Connie, Steve, Carole, Carmel, Reb, John, Sally and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Fumie passed away on January 3, 2020. Fumie was born on June 6, 1928 in Nagasaki Japan to Otojiro & Shiohno (Matsumoto) Miyazaki. Fumie is the third youngest of seven children. Fumie’s family includes her children: Carol Akami (Jack II) Drummond and Chris (J.B Ingram) Oetman; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Willis; her parents; her children: Charles Kenji Oviatt, Howard Oviatt and Charlene Emi Zuydwegt; her grandson Bill Zuydwegt. Fumie loved gardening and cooking. She cherished family and loved spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed going out to lunch with her friends. A memorial service is being planned for the spring. Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society. Steve passed away Monday, January 6, 2020 at his home in Otsego. He was born December 30, 1960 in Kalamazoo the son of Laverne and Joyce (Heighton) Abbott. Steve graduated from the University of Michigan in 1984 and earned his MBA from Western Michigan University in 1993. He had worked at Parker Hannifin for 35 years. Steve loved running and biking and was a member of the Kalamazoo TriKats. He helped organize the Shermanator Triathlon at Sherman Lake YMCA. He also enjoyed hiking and spending time in the Smoky Mountains with his family. Steve was very handy with home improvements and construction projects. He also enjoyed doing chores on the family farm, except for milking goats. Steve was kind hearted, had a great sense of humor and was always making a new friend. On May 31, 1986 he married Caroline Winters who survives. Also surviving are his children, Anneliese, Elizabeth, Laura and Tim all of Otsego; siblings, Deb (Don) Reed of Constantine, Teresa (Dan) Behrmann of Comstock and Ken (Liz) Abbott of Texas along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 8, 2020 at the First Baptist Church of Otsego with Pastor Paul Laborde officiating. Joyce passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 25, 2019 surrounded by family at Oliver Woods Retirement Village. Joyce was born May 4, 1935 in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Reynold and Caroline (Steffes) Homrich. She graduated from St. Augustine High School in Kalamazoo. Joyce was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church. She married John Kimble in Kalamazoo on September 10, 1955; he predeceased her on January 10, 2018. Joyce spent her early years as a homemaker, raising her children. She spent her later years working for Lyle Elliott and Son's Distribution and then retired from Getzen & Connell. She was also a volunteer at Memorial Healthcare. Joyce enjoyed needle work, word searches, loved to travel, especially to Florida. She loved her family and will always be known for her famous homemade applesauce. Joyce is survived by her nine children Brenda (Dave) Johnson of Dallas, Georgia, Michael (Jan) Kimble of Plainwell, David (Sharon) Kimble, Kevin (Amie) Kimble, James (Pamela) Kimble, Kathryn (Dan) Jehn, Kimberly (Greg) Klapko and John Jr. (Lori) Kimble, all of Owosso and Caroline (Frank) Gray of Long Island, New York; grandchildren Matthew (Regan), Timothy (Christy), Michael (Lindsey), David (Laura), Jami, Emily (Josh), Elizabeth, Rebecca (Judy), Thomas, Jessica (Ashley), Grace, Logan, Donavan, Gregory, Sarah (Zak), Adam, Danielle, Katie (Nick), Sara (Jason), Stefan, Andrew (Natalie), Janie, Karly, Branson, Mollie, Hannah, Paige and several great-grandchildren; sister-in-law MaryAnn Homrich of Delton; two sisters Rosalie (Larry DeValle) Brindley of Paw Paw and Donna (Daniel) Collins, of Delton; several nieces and nephews and many other loving family and friends. John passed away Thursday, January 2, 2020 in Cape Coral, Florida, near Pine Island where he has been spending the winters since 1989. He was born September 12, 1939 in Plainwell the son of Carl and Margaret (Ames) Lovett. John was a 1957 Otsego High School graduate and lifelong resident of the area. On June 25, 1960 at the First Congregational Church of Otsego he married Sue Galloway, his wife of 59 ½ years, who survives. In 1972 with his father he started Lovett Driveway Company and worked for over 40 years until his retirement. John enjoyed car racing, pony harness racing, fishing, farming, hunting, bowling, golfing, camping, snowmobiling, western movies and books and coaching his grandchildren. Also surviving are his children, Deb (Mark) Seekman of Otsego, John (Wendy) Lovett of Otsego and Robin (Mike) O’Connor of Wayland; grandchildren, Amanda, Hannah, Adam, Whitney, Brandon, Brett, Ryan and Emily; 3 step-grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren with 4 more on the way; 3 step great-grandchildren; 1 step great-great grandchild and sister, Margaret Ann Howrigon. He was preceded in death by his parents. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. AGE 77 - PLAINWELL, MI Doug passed away after an extended illness, Friday, January 3, 2020 at Medilodge in Portage. He was born August 26, 1942 in Lansing, the son of Harvey and Rosetta (Newburn) Quick. Doug proudly served his country in the U.S Navy. For over 35 years he had worked at Jim Koestner in Plainwell until his retirement. Doug enjoyed woodcarving, fishing, collecting and restoring automobiles, gardening, cooking and metal detecting. He also liked spending the winters in Florida and was a member of the Otsego Church of God. On April 27, 1985 at the Otsego Church of God he married Mary Alice Porter who survives. Also surviving are his children, Jeff Quick of Portage and Debra (Bud) Smith of Otsego; 4 grandchildren, Cody Quick, Ryan Quick, Hayden Baker and Zoe Quick; siblings, Vernon, Mike, Dick, Jim, Allen, Ruth and Sally along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation with the family was held Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at the Otsego Church of God. Cremation followed. Burial of ashes will take place at South Martin Cemetery at a later time. Contributions in memory of Doug may be made to the Otsego Church of God. AGE 90 - PLAINWELL, MI Duane passed away Thursday, January 2, 2020 with family at his side. He was born February 26, 1929 in Cooper, the son of Alfred and Bernice (Hughes) Anson. Duane proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a lifelong resident of the area and had owned and operated a golf course in Cooper. In his free time Duane enjoyed golfing, woodworking, traveling, telling stories and jokes and seeing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On October 28, 1950 in Kalamazoo he married Arlene Karr who passed away in 2014. Surviving are his children, Brian (Dalene) Anson of Plainwell, Karen (Keith) Holt of St. Joseph and Lori Franko of Kalamazoo; 5 grandchildren, Jodi, Jessica, Cameron, Tyler and Riley and 6 great-grandchildren, Madison, Grace, Olivia, Caleb, Carlee and Charis. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and siblings, Walter, Clark, Howard, Russell, Dale, Francis and Dorothy. According to his wishes cremation has taken place.
