When a President-Elect in our country chooses Cabinet members, the decision may be based on any number of reasons such as: experience, education, world view, wealth, power, influence, intelligence, loyalty, past success, temperament, pay backs, etc. Have you ever wondered how Jesus selected His cabinet? The original twelve were enlisted to bear witness to His life and carry on His work after His death. They were chosen early in His ministry and before He preached a sermon in public. They were an interesting group. They did not represent high social standing, wealth or influence. They were ordinary people. Their only formal education was the Synagogue schools. Most of them were raised in the poor section of the country around Galilee. Judas Iscariot was the only one from Judea. They had diverse personalities. John was hottempered. Andrew had an out-going personality. Peter was impulsive. Philip was a pragmatist. Nathaniel (also known as Bartholomew) was a visionary. James was ambitious. Matthew was a tax-collector. Thomas was prone to doubting. Simon was a Zealot. Judas Iscariot was an outsider. Good news: We are all members of His cabinet. The invitation to discipleship is universal (John 3:l6). We are all invited to be His disciples. The quality Jesus looks for in disciples has not changed. We are not called to be perfect disciples, but willing ones. Willing to learn, love, grow, obey, serve, and win others to Jesus Christ. God does not choose us to be successful, but to be faithful. When we faithfully share God’s love with others, good things happen. The fact His kingdom is still in existence proves the validity of His presence and the authority of His rule. Following Christ is a great privilege and an awesome responsibility. Faithful persons find ways to be faithful. We can all make a difference for God. Prayer: Dear God, help me to make a difference in my world today. Amen.

Mary L. BRYLOWSKI Mary passed away Friday, January 6, 2017 at Appledorn Assisted Living in Holland. She was born March 27, 1937 in Orchard, IA the daughter of Wellington and Amy (Willey) Lewis. Mary graduated from Grinnell and received a Master’s Degree in Education from Western Michigan University. For over 25 years she had been an elementary teacher at Otsego Public schools until her retirement. During that time she helped bring the Odyssey of the Mind program to Otsego and had served on the state board. Mary enjoyed being a member of the Global Volunteers and had traveled to many countries including Romania, China, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Australia, Africa, Greenland, Poland and New Zealand. Surviving are her children, Amy Grout and her children, Abigail, William and Margaret; Phillip (Sara) Brylowski and their children, Catherine, Owen, Liam, Gavin and Eleanor; Andrew (Kim) Brylowski and their children, Jacob and Natalie and James (Jennifer) Brylowski and their children, Cameron and Kristen; brother, Robert (Ann) Lewis along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Arthur in 1991 and brother, James Lewis. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A private family burial will be held at Alamo Center Cemetery at a later time. Contributions in memory of Mary may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Vurlah M. Gwilliams (Stone) of Otsego, MI passed away comfortably in her daughter’s home near Marcellus, MI, Jan. 2, 2017 after struggling with dementia for several years. Vurlah was born September 11, 1921 in her Watson Corners farmhouse in Allegan County. Her parents were Beatrice and Jesse Stone. Vurlah had four siblings preceding her in death, Max, Lloyd, Beverly Polious and Gertrude Roempke. Vurlah married Charles Gwilliams after he returned home from WWII. He preceded her in death in 2011. She is survived by her three children, Lynn Steil (Mike), Dennis and Kevin. She has four grandchildren, Jesse, Christian, Erin Mohney (Jeff), and Kirby Steil. Her grandson Michael preceded her in death. She has 7 great-grandchildren. Vurlah and Charlie made their home in Watson (Otsego) for over 60 years. Vurlah worked as a telephone operator and a bookkeeper before she married Charlie. She served on the Elm Hill School Board for at least 8 years. For many years she was a member of the Busy Workers, a local charitable organization. She enjoyed teaching ceramics in her home for many years. She was also a steadfast supporter of her husband Charlie’s Lions Club activities and fundraisers. Much of their travels involved Lions Club National and International conventions. However, her favorite place to vacation was in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where the entire family spent many years fishing and sight-seeing. As per her request, cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place at Hicks Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Vurlah may be made to Southern Care Hospice. Messages of condolence may be posted at www.avinkcremation.com

Patty went home to be with her Lord, to lie in the grass and look up at the blue sky and to see her daddy’s face, on her 47th wedding anniversary, Tuesday, January 10, 2017. She was born in Plainwell on July 9, 1952, the daughter of Kenneth and Betty (Dekilder) McLaughlin. Patty had worked at several area businesses including, Boulter’s Gifts in Otsego, Bright World in Kalamazoo, Neurosurgery of Kalamazoo and had also sold Avon and taught aerobics. In her spare time Patty loved going shopping in Shipshewana and decorating for Halloween and Christmas. On January 10, 1970 at St. Margaret Catholic Church she married her grade school sweetheart, Michael Pearson who survives. Also surviving are their 2 beautiful children, Amy Arlene and Michael Kenneth who were her strength to live every day; her loving grandsons, Joshua and Jacob Wood who kept her life happy every day; her wonderful son-inlaw, Bill Wood who rescued her from time to time; her mother, Betty McLaughlin; sister, Sandy (Gary) Zantello; her in-laws, the Pearson family who always supported and prayed for her; special friends, Sharon Watson, Debbie DeYoung, Elizabeth Zadney and Ted Martin, without their support she wouldn’t have gotten through many days and her beloved kitty, Callie Mae. She was preceded in death by her father and many extended relatives. Friends may meet with Patty’s family from 24 and 6-8 PM, Friday, January 13, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with a Rosary Service at 7:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Margaret Catholic Church, Otsego with Rev. Fr. Ben Huynh and Rev. Fr. Donald Klingler officiating. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Watson Township. Contributions in memory of Patty may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice of Allegan or St. Margaret Catholic School. Robert was promoted to glory with his Lord on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the Kairos Dwelling in Kalamazoo. He was born March 11, 1931 in Ionia, MI the son of John and Hattie “Esther” (Badder) Kline. Bob was an Ionia High School graduate and proudly served his country in the US Air Force. He repaired radios, had been a Cole’s bread man and done weather stats for the Ionia airport in the 1970’s. For many years he was a mail carrier with the US Postal Service in Ionia and was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. Bob was a student of all things. He enjoyed reading, math, bug collecting, recycling old bikes, hunting and genealogy. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Stanton and Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church in Ionia. Bob was an avid Bible scholar and a life time student of God’s word. Surviving are his daughter, Theresa (Tim Allen) Dibble of Plainwell; step-children, Michael (Robin) Moore of Belding and April Gunderman of Sidney; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; siblings, Joyce (Milton) Powers of AZ, Larry (Barbara) Kline of Lyons and Richard (Barbara) Kline of Dimondale; many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wives, Maxine and Barbara; step-son, Robbie Moore; siblings, JoAnn, Raymond, William and David and sister-inlaw, Beatrice Kline. Funeral services were held, January 11, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Pastor Don Boss officiated. Burial followed at the Balcom Cemetery in Ionia. Bob’s family would like to thank the staff at Kairos Dwelling and Reverence Hospice for their compassion and care. Dannie Lee BELDEN AGE 72 - ALLEGAN, MI
Dan passed away with his family by his side, January 4, 2017 at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born October 3, 1944 in Plainwell to Gerald and Kathryn (Slater) Belden. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many. A 1963 graduate of Allegan High School, Dan worked at Rockwell for 22 years, before working for Hurbert and Tarpley Construction. He was also a self-employed building contractor for six years, and worked at Parker Hannifin for 16 years before retiring in 2007. Dan was a loving, generous man with a marvelous sense of humor. He enjoyed draft horses and gardening. He especially loved hooking his horse up to a buggy made by his father and going for long leisurely rides. Dan was preceded in death by his parents and his father and mother in-law, Stanley and Bethel (Root) Schmitt. He is survived by his wife, Sherlene (Schmitt) Belden; children Debra (Peter) Olsen, Scott (Kimberly) Belden, Henry “Barry” Junker, Bart Junker and Marnie (Ric) Shingledecker, brothers Rodney (Jan) Belden, Larry (Deb) Belden and sister Linda (Dick) Beilby as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Per Dan’s wishes cremation has taken place; there will be no funeral. A private celebration of Dan’s life will take place at a later date.
