“REJOICE AND BE GLAD” By Rev. Dan Minor

“This is a day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” – Psalm 118:24 (NIV)

Here it is - the beginning of a new year - and I cannot think of a better verse than the one quoted above. Whenever I read this verse I think of a person who lived in assisted living. She was in her 90s and one time I asked her if she could tell me the secret for her longevity. She quickly responded, “Every morning I look into the mirror and repeat Psalm 118:24. It gets my day off to a good start.”

God broke our years, months and weeks down into days to make it a bit easier to live our lives. Living the Christian life is a daily discipline (Luke 9:23). God has promised that God’s love and mercies never fail and are “new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22-23). Here are just a few tips for getting our day off to a good start:

1. Begin with prayer. Jesus began each day with prayer (Mark 1:35). So must we.

2. Praise Him. God loves to be praised. This brings to mind the lyrics of a song we used to sing in Sunday school: “Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him in the morning, Praise Him in the noontime. Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him when the sun goes down”.

3. Ask for God’s forgiveness. “If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (I John 1:9).

4. Read God’s Word. “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105).

5. Ask God to guide you. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5, 6).

6. At the end of the day, talk to God about your day and ask for a restful night. “When you lie down, you will not be afraid … your sleep will be sweet” (Proverbs 3:24).

When we fill our minds with God, our day will go better and we will know what it means to “Rejoice and be Glad.” Prayer: “Dear Lord, this is a new day. I will start this day with You. In Your strong Name. Amen. In loving memory of June Starr (1924-2021) who brought joy and friendship to many.

Richard “Rich” Lawrence Bacon, age 68, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids. He was born on December 14, 1953, and graduated from Plainwell High School in 1972. On March 13, 1982, Rich married Robin Reich, and they were blessed to experience 39 years of marriage together. Rich worked as a millwright for Graphic Packaging in Kalamazoo for nearly 30 years and as a Realtor at Cornell and Associates in Plainwell for 35 years. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, snow skiing and water skiing, watching NASCAR, traveling with his family, volunteering on school boards and church boards, and playing with his grandson. Rich was a generous helper to everyone. He donated blood every time he had the chance, volunteered in multiple positions at church, and was always willing to help with house repairs for his family and friends. Rich is survived by his wife Robin; daughter Angela (Michael) Grimm; grandson Graham; mother-in-law Bev Reich; siblings Joan Bacon-Boers, Claudia (Ted) Polomcak, Glen Bacon, Joyce (Ben Corda) Reed, and Cathy (John) Lucas; brother-in-law Todd (Monica) Reich; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was greatly loved and will be deeply missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Spencer and Leora Bacon, and his father-in-law Dale Reich. The family wishes to thank all of the medical staff who took excellent care of Rich during his illness. Due to Covid concerns, a graveside service for immediate family has taken place. The family will hold an outdoor celebration of life service at First Baptist Church of Allegan at a later date. Geraldine “Gerri” BENT AGE 83 - OTSEGO, MI

Gerri passed away Tuesday December 21, 2021 at Bronson Hospital. She was born January 28, 1938 to Herman and May(Morse) VanHuis. Gerri was an Otsego graduate and for many years worked at Parker Hannifin until her retirement. Gerri married the love of her life, Gary Bent, who passed away in 1976. Together they welcomed two sons, Gary Bent Jr. and Gregory (Tammy Leonard) Bent who survive. She is also survived by a grandson, Gary (Jessica) Brown, two great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn and Emma Brown, a brother, Robert (Glenda) VanHuis, a sister-in-law, Ruth Bent, and brother-in-law, Ray Arnett, as well as many nieces and nephews. June passed away Thursday, December 23, 2021, surrounded by her family, at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell. The daughter of Earl and Letha (Taggart) Garton, June was born August 25, 1924 in Allegan. For many years she worked as an inspector at Parker Hannifin until her retirement in 1986. June enjoyed camping, music, dancing and golf. Family was very special and important to June. She loved attending all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s games, plays, band concerts and parties. June was a member of the First Congregational Church of Otsego. She was a Cub Scout leader when her boys were young and a hospice volunteer for many years. On June 18, 1942 she married Medford Starr who passed away in 2006. Surviving are her sons, Norman (Nancy) Starr and Medford (Sally) Starr both of Otsego; grandchildren, Jana Starr, Kishella (Dave) Roelof, David (Cheryl) Starr; Cherie (George) Owens, Natalie (Troy) Wolhuis, Todd (Anna) Starr, Mike (Melissa) Blackwell; great-grandchildren, Tyler (Brittany), Justin and Jacob Starr, Delaney and Madie Starr, Trevor (Allie), Ty (Kamery) and Trenton Wolhuis, Montana, Trae and Cheyton Blackwell, Kelsey (Jeremy) Bohl and Jordan (Sarah) Owens; 3 great-great-grandchildren, Phoenix, Kennedi and Emmy; sister, Letha (Nick) Cary; step-sisters, Judy Dee and Lorene Lemson along with several nieces and nephews. Marian Jean (Jeanie) WARE AGE 87 - OTSEGO, MI

Jeanie passed away Friday, December 24, 2021 at her home in Otsego, Michigan. She was born March 2, 1934 in Morris, Illinois, the daughter of Joseph and Breta (Nelson) Auffert. Jeanie worked part-time at Palo Verde Hospital in Blythe, CA as a Certiﬁed Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). She was currently working at the age of 87 and was looking forward to retiring in April 2022. Throughout her life, Jeanie enjoyed sewing, art work, piloting small aircraft, scuba diving, woodworking, upholstering and leather crafting. Surviving are her children, Russell E. Pumford, Debra Dee, Marcia Vincent and Nancy Warner; 5 grandchildren, Jennifer (Jake) Hogan, Jaclyn (Shawn) Steinike, Nathan Loudin, Jessica (Wayne) Pearish and Russell E. Pumford III; 6 great-grandchildren along with several extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Russell D. Pumford and Darrel D. Ware; sister, Jeanette Nelson and her half-brother, Edward D. Royston. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Gary L. CHASE

AGE 70 - GALESBURG, MI Gary Louis Peter Chase was welcomed into Heaven on Monday, December 20, 2021. He passed peacefully at his home in Galesburg after battling end-stage renal failure. He was born September 17, 1951 in Dearborn, the son of Stanley Jr. and Flora (Ratiu) Chase. Gary attended Our Lady of Grace, St. Mary’s school, Hackett HS (Class of 69) & graduated from WMU in 1975 with a BA in Marketing. He worked at Gull Lake Country Club to pay his way through Hackett. While attending WMU, Gary worked for Meijer where he met the love of his life Joy (aka Joyful Ann Honey) Merrill. Gary was hired in 1978 by the U.S. Postal Service. He worked as an LSM operator, expeditor and express driver until his retirement in 2013. He made lifelong friends everywhere he went. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting (aka playing poker with his deer hunting buddies), fishing, traveling with Joy, doing yardwork and swimming at the MN house, winning cornhole, transporting vehicles for Ford, playing Santa Claus at the annual Merrill Christmas parties, animal rescue, cheering for the Wolverines, Lions, and Tigers and volunteering at West MI Cancer Center. Gary had a wonderful sense of humor and a smile and joke for all of us. He looked forward to Sunday family dinners followed by lively board games. He loved hosting 4th of July parties (where there were some close calls with the fireworks but no lost digits), going on family vacations up-north to Onaway and siblings weekends and dinners. Family was always his top priority. On October 27, 1973 at St. Margaret Catholic Church, he married Joy Merrill, who survives. Also surviving are his daughters Molly, Katie, Anna, and Jenna all of Kalamazoo; sister Amy Chase; brothers Jeff, Michael and Rob (Kami) Chase; brothers and sisters-in-law Tim (Sharon) Merrill, Sally (Dan) Perrin, Cheryl (Rick) VanderVeen, Jeanne (Kevin) Lewis, Tammy (Bob) Bailey, Linda Merrill, and Nyla Merrill along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Ricky; mother and father-in-law Richard and Bernice Merrill, and brothers-in-law Rick and Pat Merrill. According to Gary’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Friends may meet with Gary’s family from 5-8pm on Friday, January 7 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, January 8 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kalamazoo. The family would like to thank Gary’s medical team including DaVita Dialysis, Drs. Charlotte A. BURCHETT AGE 83 - KALAMAZOO, MI

Mrs. Charlotte “Char” Burchett entered into her eternal rest on December 26, 2021 at her home in Kalamazoo. Char was born January 1, 1938 in Kalamazoo, MI, the daughter of Harry and Cora Ekema. She grew up and spent her life in the Alamo area. Char graduated from Otsego High School in 1956. She worked as an Administrative Assistant for State Farm and owned and operated Burchett Quality Tool with her husband until her retirement in 2005. Char enjoyed attending church, Bible studies, taking care of her beautiful flower gardens and being with her family. On May 31, 1957 she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Stanley, who survives. Also surviving are her children, Cheryl (Len) Myers of Martin, Dennis (Patti) Burchett and Darrell (Lora) Burchett both of Kalamazoo; 7 grandchildren, Aaron (Brooke), Alex (Nikki), Andrew (Lindsey), Molly (Jacob), Kristi (Nicholas), Kalie (Tyler) and Shay; 8 great-grandchildren; brother, Arlyn (Shirley) Ekema of Kalamazoo; sister-in-law, Chris Ekema of Mattawan along with many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents; infant sister, Beatrice; sister, Jeanne Weessies; and brothers, Roger and Rev. Bernard Ekema. Clover is 5 years old and weighs approximately 56 pounds. She is a sweet, loving dog and she would LOVE a home with kids! It is recommended that any children in the home are around 8 years old and up. Clover could join a home that already has a dog. She seems to prefer easy-going male dogs around her size the best. If you already have a dog in the home, a meet and greet will be set up at the shelter to make sure the dogs are a good match. A catfree home will be necessary for Clover.
