The City of Otsego and the Otsego-Plainwell Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony on January 4, 2019. Tim's wife, Lydia and five of their grown children were there to celebrate the occasion.

Tim is originally from this area and he moved back to be near family and friends after serving in the U.S. Navy for 10 years flying on U.S. aircraft carriers. Florence B. HOEKSTRA AGE 81 - OTSEGO, MI

Florence Belle (Herbert) Hoekstra passed away peacefully at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at the age of 81. Florence was born on June 22, 1937, in Plainwell, the daughter of the late H. Edward and LaBerta (Buskirk) Herbert.

She married the love of her life, Albert Hoekstra on June 4, 1954 in Martin. Florence was very proud to be the oldest and only sister to seven younger brothers. She cherished time spent with family and friends. She and Albert spent several years in California and North Carolina before returning to Michigan. They also enjoyed wintering in Florida where they made some wonderful friends.

Florence was an avid reader, loved to play cards and socialize with family and friends. She and Al spent many happy days attending bluegrass festivals near and far. She will be missed but not forgotten by many.

She is survived by her husband, Albert, son, Albert Jr. (Patsy) Hoekstra; two grandchildren, Jon (Amber) Hoekstra and Vanessa (Justin) Tillison; four greatgrandchildren, Madelynn, Owen and Everett Hoekstra and Mason Tillison; her brothers, Barry (Linda) Herbert, Frank (Kathleen) Herbert and James (Terri) Herbert; sisters-in-law, Grace Herbert, Gertrude Hoekstra and Marlene Hoekstra and many nieces and nephews including a special niece, Sarah Gorton. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Oren, Lee, Max and Steve Herbert. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial celebration will be held at a later time.

Michael J. FERGUSSON, Sr. AGE 59 - OTSEGO, MI

Mike passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at his home in Otsego. He was born June 5, 1959 in Plainwell the son of Robert and Mary Ellen (Sornbury) Fergusson-Woodstock. Mike was an Otsego High School graduate. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at bases in Marquette; Phoenix, Arizona; Ramstein, Germany and Champagne, Illinois. Mike had worked in security for department stores in California. After returning to Michigan he had been a manager at Coleman Rent to Own and had also sold advertising for businesses throughout Southwest Michigan. In his spare time he enjoyed watching the deer in his backyard, playing the lottery, collecting old coins and spending time with his friends and neighbors.

Mike was a member of the Otsego VFW Post #3030.

He had married Denise Midose in Otsego. Surviving are his children, Heather Fergusson-Lincoln and Michael Fergusson Jr.; grandchildren, Olivia and Colton; his mother; sister, Laura Riddell; his ex-wife, Denise Lincoln; nieces, Wendy White, Krista White and Tara Sweet and nephew, Ryan Sweet. He was preceded in death by his father and siblings, Karen and Steve. Cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at 11:00A.M., Monday, February 11, 2019 at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. A reception in honor of Mike will follow at Baraga Manor in the Community Room. Brenda K. MATTHEWS AGE 49 - KALAMAZOO, MI

Brenda Kay went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 14, 2019. She was born and raised March 10, 1969 in Otsego, the daughter of Richard and Nancy (Ort) Simmons.

Her passion was trail riding on her parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; property and showing Arabian horses. She loved animals, was a waitress and loved being around people. She loved hunting for mushrooms, fishing, gardening and antiquing. She is survived by her best friend, middle school sweetheart and husband, Jeff Matthews. She is also survived by her parents; best friend and sister, Tammy Simmons; her mother-in-law, Judy Matthews; her brother-in-law, Tom (Jerry) Matthews and by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. A celebration of Brendaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life is planned for 5:00 P.M., Saturday, February 2, 2019 at the First Baptist Church of Otsego.

Jean BRINKHUIS AGE 95 - MARTIN, MI

Jean passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at the age of 95. Jean was born on December 9, 1923 in Beaver Dam, MI. She was the daughter of Cornelius and Nellie (VerHage) Wittingen. On October 2, 1951 she married Floyd Brinkhuis. She was a faithful member of the Martin Reformed Church. Jean is survived by her three children: Gary (Pat) Brinkhuis, of Martin; Mary (Gary) Teal, of Washington, MI; Carla (Tim) Eichler, of Martin; six grandchildren: Joe (Andrea) Brinkhuis, Jeff (Jen) Brinkhuis , Sara (Anthony) Cocco, Dane (Tiffany) Teal, Adam (Jackie) Dussia, and Aubrey (Casey) Richie; 11 great grandchildren: Calli, Addison, Easton, Reid, Adley, Chloe, Lydia, Davis, Logan, Jackson, and Jace.

She is also survived by her siblings: Caroline Heidema, of Holland. She is preceded in death by her husband Floyd in 1987; three brothers: James Hop, Harvey Wittingen, and Richard Wittingen. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at the Martin Reformed Church. Burial at the East Martin Cemetery.

AGE 66 - KALAMAZOO, MI Gordon passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at his home in Alamo Township. He was born August 25, 1952 in Kalamazoo the son of Robert and Florence (Blue) Snow. Gordon was a 1970 Otsego High School graduate.

He had worked at Upjohn/Pfizer for over 30 years until his retirement in 2006. In his spare time Gordon enjoyed photographing wildlife and landscapes and hunting. Surviving are his son, Jared (Stephanie Zohn) Snow; mother and step-father, Florence and Berle Finkey; brother, Paul (Teri) Snow; nephew, Nathan (Kallin) Snow and their daughter, Avery Snow and his niece, Caitlin (Justin Nolan) Snow. He was preceded in death by his father, niece, Amanda Snow and by his dogs, Chase and Boo Boo. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial visitation will be held from 4-6 P.M., Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with a time of sharing starting at 6:00 P.M. We have witnessed the futility of false idols. After Moses delivered the children of Israel from Egyptian bondage, God gave the Ten Commandments. On their way to the Promised Land, I can imagine God saying something like this to Moses on Mount Sinai, “It is well that you have delivered my people. They will have every opportunity for prosperity. I will give them everything they need to be happy and successful. Yet I tell you. People can never be fully satisfied with material things only. The way they live will be more important than what they have.”

In short, the only way to be happy is to live according to God’s laws. The Ten Commandments were given for all people for all time. God’s laws can never be rescinded or appealed. The first law is “You shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3).

One cannot break these laws without breaking oneself.

Here are some examples: • Money can buy things but not happiness (I Timothy 6:10).

• Fame can bring recognition but not honor (Matthew 13:57).

• Worldly pleasures are fleeting (Proverbs 21:17).

• Material possessions do not last (Luke 12:19-21).

• “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up” (I Corinthians 8:1) • Power brings pride, but pride can lead to destruction (Proverbs 16:18).

There is a better way to live our lives. God’s way. In a world of uncertainty and struggles for power, it is good to be reminded of the true source of power. All we need to do is tap into it.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to remember our true source of power. Amen.

ARE THEY ACCESSIBLE? If not, you could be adding more frigid outdoor time to those delivering the mail and newspapers, as well as kids walking home from school. We remind you to help neighbors who may not be able to shovel themselves out or clear their sidewalks.

Winter Checklist At the Shoppers Guide, we try our hardest to deliver your paper to you every week. We appreciate your patience as we maneuver through sometimes treacherous winter conditions.

Make sure the paper box and hook is clear of snow and easily accessible.

Remember, delivery people MUST be able to easily pull up and away from your mailbox in their vehicle and reach it from inside their vehicle. They have many stops to make and if your box is not accessible, it will be skipped for the safety of our drivers.

If your paper box and mail box is by your house, is the sidewalk and walkway cleared of snow and ice? Is it safe for others to walk on?

We do not expect our walking route delivery people to walk through deep and uncleared sidewalks and driveways. If yours is not shoveled, you may be skipped.
