“Judging a Great Sermon”

Over the years I have prepared and preached well over two thousand sermons. I have always enjoyed the spiritual discipline of writing messages and hence this column. Biblical background: • Preaching is a gift of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:11) • Jesus came preaching (Mark l: 14). • Jesus said His mission was to preach “release to the captives…” (Luke 4:18) • Lay preaching was prevalent in the New Testament Church (Acts 8:4) I have had the privilege of teaching lay servants the art of preaching.

Karen passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at the Wings Home in Allegan. She was born September 10, 1942 in Plainwell, the daughter of Wilbur and Ruby (Livingston) Allen. For many years Karen had done payroll for the Michigan Cottage Cheese Factory before going to work in the finance department for the Big Top Market until her retirement in 2011.Karen was a member of the First Congregational Church of Otsego and had been a scout leader when her sons were younger. In her spare time Karen enjoyed golfing, gardening, cooking and most of all she loved watching her children and grandchildren at all of their sporting events. On May 6, 1961 at the Otsego United Methodist Church she married Archie Smith who passed away in April 2015. Surviving are her children, Rick (Kim) Smith of Orangeville, Randy (April) Smith and Gary Smith both of Plainwell; 8 grandchildren, Sydney, Taylor, Tyler, Jay, Mekala, Jordan, Elle and Connor and great-grandson, Aubrey. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, Dick Allen. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Karen’s family Sunday, January 31, 2016 from 2-5 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego A memorial service will be held Monday, February 1, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Congregational Church of Otsego with Pastor Darin Youngs officiating. Contributions in memory of Karen may be made to the Wings Home of Allegan or to Paws With A Cause. Messages of condolence may be posted at www.WinkelFuneralHome.com

Eleanor M. (Minor) TUBERGEN

AGE 98 – KALAMAZOO, MI Eleanor passed away Thursday, January 21, 2016 at the Butterfly Oasis Home in Kalamazoo. She was born May 3, 1917 in Sturgis the daughter of James G. and Wanda F. Blanchard. Eleanor was the oldest of three children and spent her childhood in the Klinger lake area. She was a graduate of Sturgis High School and Western State Teachers College. In the 1960’s Eleanor then obtained her Master’s Degree from Western Michigan University. On October 6, 1939 in the home of her parents at the Blanchard Hotel near Klinger Lake, she married Emerson B. Minor who passed away in 1996. For thirty years Eleanor had taught school in various communities including Starr Elementary School in Plainwell from which she retired in 1979 after fourteen years of service. Among other things, Eleanor enjoyed reading, knitting, sewing, crocheting, planting vegetable and flower gardens, tending to her house plants as well as sending cards and writing notes of encouragement to others. On May 27, 2000 she married James L. Tubergen who survives. Also surviving are her five children, Tad (Carol) Minor of Traverse City, Martha (Robert) Reeves of Portage, Tom (Melinda) Minor of Tecumseh, Rev. Dan (Jolene) Minor of Otsego and Mary (Steve) DeMann of Martin; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Rev. Emerson B. Minor and brothers, Donald H. Blanchard and Dick E. Blanchard. A Service of Thanksgiving for her life was held Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at the Otsego United Methodist Church, 223 E. Allegan St., Otsego, Pastor Joe Shaler officiated. Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. Contributions in memory of Eleanor may be made to the Otsego United Methodist Church for the new piano fund. Linda L. RUTHERFORD AGE 76 – OTSEGO, MI

Linda L. Rutherford died Friday January 22, 2016 at her home. Linda was born May 14, 1939 in Union City to Clyde & Ada (Nichols) Rench. Linda worked as a CNA for Metron of Allegan and Life Care of Plainwell prior to her retirement. Linda was preceded in death by her husband Grover in 2001, her infant daughter Kelly, her grandson Bryan Thomas, and two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her children David Casarez, Karen Robertson, Mark (Kelly) Thomas, Vicky (Rick) Heimstra, Brenda (Greg) Lamb, her stepson Ken (Becky) Rutherford, 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 1 greatgreat grandchild, her brother James Rench as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Norman Henry Cole passed away on Monday, January 25, 2016 in Sebring, Florida. He was born on January 15, 1941 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to the late Henry and Grace (Blue) Cole. Norman worked for Plainwell Paper Mill. His hobbies were bowling (where he scored a 299), horseshoes and fishing. He moved to Frostproof 7 years ago and was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife Valarie Cole-Frostproof, FL, Children, Laurie Cole-Frostproof, FL; Nina (Scott) Hoeve; Joseph Snow; Scott (Christine) Snow all of Kalamazoo, MI; Amy Sheldon-Otsego, MI, fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Norman was preceded in death by his first wife, Starr Cole, sons, Norman Henry Cole, Jr.; Bruce Alan Snow, Jr., three brothers and two sisters. There will be a memorial service on Thursday, February 4, 2016, 11:00 a.m., at Sun Ray United Methodist Church, 316 Raymond Ave., Frostproof, FL. Cpl Matthew Jankowski of Plainwell passed away January 19, 2016 at his home in Ft Campbell, Kentucky. Matt serviced his country proudly in the Marines and then in the Army. Matt was born to Bryan & Michelle (Bowen) Jankowski on December 20, 1988. Matt’s family includes his wife of 6 years, Katie; his children: Bryan (5), Vincent (3), Mattilyn (2); his parents Bryan (Renee) Jankowski and Michelle (Tim) Schutte; siblings: David (Jessica) Jankowski, Brooke Jankowski; his grandparents: Pixie Royston, Judy Campbell and Roger Bowen. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, dirt bikes and was your basic grease monkey. He loved life itself and enjoyed it to the fullest. He was also an exceptional cook. A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2016 from 11:00 to 1:00 at the Life Story Funeral Home, Plainwell. A memorial service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the same location.

Joseph passes away Friday, January 15, 2016 at his home in Florida. He was born October 31, 1919 in Otsego to Samuel and Frances (Congemi) Mario. Joseph was a 1938 Otsego High School graduate and LaSalle Barber School in Chicago, IL. He proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II. For many years he owned and operated the Otsego Barber Shop. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, hunting and his home on Pine Lake. On June 28, 1941 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Allegan, MI, he married Alberta Bishop who passed away on November 25, 2015. Surviving are his two children, Andrea (Thomas) Cassidy and Joseph Michael (Penny) Mario; 4 grandchildren, Andrea (Shay) Adkins, Robert (Bonny) Mario, Tim Mario and Joey Mario; 6 greatgrandchildren, Amanda and April Mario, Alyssa Mario, Gracie and Joe Mario and Mike (Melissa) Burke; sister-in-law, Linda Mario and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 74 years, Alberta; his parents; four brothers, Sam, John, Tony and Frank and by his sister, Catherine. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Alberta passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2015 in Florida. She was born January 14, 1921 in Battle Creek, and was raised from birth by her grandmother, Orpha May Bishop. Alberta graduated from Plainwell High School in 1939 and then from Cosmetology School in 1940. She had owned and operated Nu Mode Beauty Shop in Otsego and coowned Mario’s Beauty Shop in Otsego with her sister-in –law, Linda Mario. Alberta enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, knitting, crocheting, and was very fond of her home on Pine Lake. On June 28, 1941 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Allegan she married Joseph Mario. They have now been reunited in Heaven after Joseph’s passing on January 15, 2016. Gene E. TAYLOR

AGE 91 – KALAMAZOO, MI Gene passed away Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Life Care Center in Plainwell. He was born May 11, 1924 in Kalamazoo to Ralph and Beulah (Morris) Taylor. Gene proudly served his country in the US Army in the Pacific during WWII. He had worked at the recycling center in Cooper and for over 20 years had cleaned the carpool lot on D Avenue. Gene had also worked at Gibson Guitar and KVP Sutherland and most recently for the City of Kalamazoo with the Metro Transit System. He was a people person and loved talking with people whether he knew them or not. To stay busy he sold burning barrels and enjoyed playing dominoes, collecting wheat pennies, and listening to hymns. Gene was a member of Immanuel Fellowship Church in Kalamazoo. On December 9, 1949 in Kalamazoo he married Jean Pyle who survives. Gene was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Also surviving are his daughters, Carol (Jim) Dennis of Plainwell and Sandra (Phillip) Harpootlian of Simpsonville, SC; grandchildren, Aaron (Rebekah) Dennis, Nathan Dennis, Ryan Dennis and Andrew Harpootlian; great-grandchildren, Alex, Hannah, Addison and Jasmine Dennis; and sisters, Eleanor Bunce and Lucille (Merle) Hamblin. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Ralph Jr., Robert and Louie. Funeral services were held at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Timothy J. NOWAK AGE 53 – GOBLES, MI

Tim passed away Monday, January 25, 2016 in Lakeside, MI. He was born October 18, 1962 in Coldwater to Jerry and Kay (Somerlott) Nowak. He was a 1981 Otsego High School graduate and for 24 years had worked at Perrigo in Allegan. Tim was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and mushroom hunting. He also liked playing golf and watching sports especially Notre Dame. Surviving are his sons, Tyler Nowak and Matt (Lyndsey) Nowak both of Otsego; grandson, Bryce Nowak; parents, Kay (Jack) Trumbla of Plainwell and Jerry (Lyneta) Nowak of Otsego; siblings, Cindy (Scott) Musial of Lakeside and Lori Gale of Muskegon along with several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. A funeral service will be held Friday, January 29, 2016 at 11:00am at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with celebrant Bill Rose officiating.
