“CLOSE TO THE HEART OF GOD” By Rev. Dan Minor

“Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them, saying …” (Matthew 5:1)

Is there a difference between being happy and being blessed? The word “happiness” comes from the word “hap” which literally means: chance. As we all know, human happiness can turn to disappointment and sorrow at any time. Jesus uses a much stronger word: “Blessed.” The word literally means “An inner joy that is untouchable by the world.”

As always, Jesus goes counterculture; that is He reverses human norms of behavior by giving us a deeper meaning of kingdom values. This is basic Christianity. We call them the Beatitudes (“Supreme blessedness”). They are listed in Matthew 5:1-12.

When a Jewish Rabbi was teaching in some official capacity, he always sat down to teach. Thus, Jesus sat down to teach His disciples some central truths of His kingdom. Jesus was building on the Covenant (promise) God made to Abraham. God said to Abraham, “I will make you into a great nation and you will be a blessing … all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you” (Genesis 12:1-3).

Another definition of the word blessedness is “Close to the heart of God.” With this in mind, let us take a closer look and summarize the Beatitudes as follows:

Verse 3 “Poor in Spirit” - “Close to the heart of God are those who humble themselves before God.”

Verse 4 – “Those who mourn” – “Close to the heart of God are those whose hearts are broken.”

Verse 5 – “The Meek” – “Close to the heart of God are those who are self-controlled.”

Verse 6 – “Those who hunger and thirst after righteousness” – “Close to the heart of God are those who have a desire for God.”

Verse 7 - “The Merciful” – “Close to the heart of God are those who are quick to forgive.”

Verse 8 – “The pure in heart” – “Close to the heart of God are those whose motives are pure.”

Verse 9 - “The peacemakers” – “Close to the heart of God are those who desire peace with God and others.”

Verses 10-12 – “Those who are persecuted for righteousness sake” – “Close to the heart of God are those who suffer and lose their lives for God.”

Prayer: Dear Lord, this is where we all want to be – close to the heart of God. In Your strong name. Amen.

James “Jimmy” M. McGUIRE AGE 51 - TERRE HAUTE, IN (Formerly of Martin, MI)

Jimmy passed away January 1, 2022, unexpectedly. He was born December 1, 1970, to James Albert McGuire and Joyce Marie (DeKam) McGuire of Martin, Michigan. Jimmy was a Martin High School Graduate, a great athlete, scholar and a friend to many. He met his wife Kumi at Western Michigan University where he graduated with an engineering degree. Jimmy loved to keep learning, finding way to help others. After being an engineer, he went back to school to become a nurse, plus much more. Jimmy worked in Terre Haute, Indiana as a Process Engineer at Union Hospital, and was heavily involved at his church, Maryland Community Church 12 Points Campus. He enjoyed gardening at the ISU community garden, Bible Study Fellowship, golfing, hiking, traveling and fishing. Jimmy had a heart for serving people. He volunteered as a chaplain at Union Hospital every week and respite care with the foster care program. Jimmy was a devoted father and attended all his children’s activities. He is survived by his wife, Kumi (Yamamoto) McGuire, whom he married in June 1996, his daughter Karen McGuire, son Alex McGuire, sister Christie (Curt) Fontaine of Martin, Michigan, and brother Doug (Kasandra) McGuire of Delton, Michigan, along with several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Steve and Michael McGuire. A Celebration of Life for Jimmy will take place Friday, January 7, 2022 at 6 PM at Maryland Community Church 12 Points Campus, 2000 N. 13th Street, Terre Haute, Indiana. Visitation will take place from 4-6 PM at the church. Pastor Dan Geisel will be officiating. William Roger McPHERSON AGE 75 - OTSEGO, MI

Family, friends, employees, and the manufacturing community grieve the loss of a wonderful man and a true pioneer in the bonded magnet industry. On the morning of January 5, 2022, William Roger McPherson passed away quietly from natural causes. Roger was born on September 1, 1946 in Plainwell, Michigan, the third child to Bernard C. Sr. and Hazel McPherson. He lived his entire life in Otsego, Michigan. His contributions to his family, community and the magnetics industry will be greatly missed. He was recognized worldwide as the creator of a unique type of injection bonded magnet technology. Many millions of magnets continue to be produced in a factory in Otsego, Michigan that ship across continents and make an impact to many diverse industries. Roger served as President of Tengam Engineering, Inc. and as Chairman of the Board after his retirement. Roger is survived by his wife of 53 years, Linda and his beloved children, Analyssa McPherson and Mark McPherson both of Otsego. He is also survived by his grandchildren Collin, Seth and Mya McPherson, his sister Melinda Kling and his brother Tim McPherson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bernard Jr. Cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Roger’s family from 4-7 PM, Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with a time of sharing starting at 6:30 PM. John passed away Saturday, January 1, 2022 at his home in Plainwell. The son of Alonzo and Hazel (New) Moran, he was born July 23, 1936 in Plainwell. John worked as a millwright for over 30 years at Plainwell Paper until his retirement. In his spare time he liked being outdoors, walking, hunting, fishing and cutting wood. John enjoyed remodeling his home and spending time with his grandchildren. In January of 1957, he married Joan James who survives. Also surviving are his children, Alonzo (Kimberly) Moran of Cooper Township, Thomas Moran of Otsego, Linda (Terry) Todd of Plainwell, John Moran Jr. of Plainwell and Cindy (Michael) Woodford of New York, 7 grandchildren and 4 step-grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; siblings, Calvin Moran of Otsego and David Moran of Cooper along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Alonzo, Margaret, Carol, Elton, Oscar, Phyllis, Leo and William. Friends may visit with John’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Friday, January 7, 2022, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Ray Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. Contributions in memory of John may be made to ARC of Allegan County, Wings of Hope Hospice of Allegan or Alzheimer’s Association.

Mary J. Knapp passed away on December 27, 2021, at the age of 78. She was born on November 24, 1943, to Orville and Beverly (Dewey) Hockett. Mary is survived by her daughter Susan Knapp; her daughter-inlaw Kelli Knapp; stepsons, Andy Hitchcock, and Steve Hitchcock; her sister Brenda (Ron) Hershberger; her grandchildren Heather (David) Stine, Erika Bowen, Andrea Guthrie, Drew Hitchcock, several great grandchildren including her 3-monthold great grandson Weston Stine; her aunt Dorie Higgins; many cousins; and close friends. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her mother Pearl Hockett; her first husband Ralph Knapp; her partner of 23 years, Merle Hitchcock; her son Wesley Knapp; her sister Georgialynn Little; and her brother Lee Emert. Mary and Ralph met in high school and married shortly after. They later divorced but had two wonderful children: Sue and Wesley. She met Merle in 1979 and they spent 23 wonderful years together until his death in 2012. Mary was a wonderful mother and grandmother, who loved taking care of children. She lived for family and was blessed to spend this Thanksgiving with her new great grandson Weston. Being so very proud of all her grandchildren and family, her house was filled with their photos, which she loved to share with her friends. Along with her family, Mary had a special relationship with children that she babysat, which continued into their adulthood. They thought of her as a grandmother. Mary also enjoyed her circle of friends, sharing stories, meals, and fun times together, and she will be dearly missed. Cremation has taken place and a service is being planned for the Spring. Memorial donations may be made to the Make a Wish Foundation.

AGE 66 - KALAMAZOO, MI Jerry passed away Monday, January 3, 2022 at his home in Kalamazoo. He was born May 31, 1955 in Plainwell, the son of Homer and Helen (Caldwell) Latta. Jerry loved motorcycles, 4x4’s and working in his yard. On February 14, 1995 in Allegan he married Ellen Cobb who passed away. Surviving are his children, Jerry “Jay” Jr. (Natasha) Latta, Nathan (Christa) Cobb and Amber (Ray) Hoyt; grandchildren, Tyler, John, Ellie and Olivia; siblings, Donald (Sue) Latta and Steve (Jeannie) Latta and several nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sister, Donna and brother, John. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Orangeville Township Hall at a later time. Contributions in memory of Jerry may be made to his family for expenses. Mocha would love a fun forever home that will keep her mind and body active. Mocha is a sweet girl, but she can jump up looking for affection; with some training and patience she will become a wonderful family dog. It is recommended that any children in her home are 10 years old and up, however, homes with younger dog savvy children could also be a good fit. At this time, it might be best if Mocha was the only pet in her home. However, with some training and slow introductions to medium to large playful dogs, she may be able to have a doggy sibling.
