AGE 75 - ALLEGAN, MI

Pat passed away Saturday, January 2, 2021at Borgess Place in Kalamazoo. She was born July 29, 1935 in Allegan, the daughter of Merton and Mildred (Tremaine) Hodge. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Allegan. On December 26, 1960 in Allegan she married Eldon Philley who passed away in 1984. Pat and Eldon were active members of the Jaycees. Pat had been a girl scout and a leader and received a 20 year pin. For over 20 years she worked at Minnie’s Restaurant in Allegan until her retirement. She enjoyed crafts, making things, shopping, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles and sending cards to those she cared for. Surviving are her children, Allen Philley of Allegan and Barb (Joe) Wine of Parchment; daughter –in-law, Terri Philley of Missouri; grandson, Ryan Gordon; brother, Gerald “Mike” Hodge of Allegan and niece, Diana McDaniel. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, Fred. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Allegan at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, January 16, 2021. Contributions in memory of Pat may be made to the United Methodist Church of Allegan. Larry passed away Thursday, December 31, 2020 at his home in Otsego. He was born February 2, 1944 in Kalamazoo, the son of Frank and Mable (Phillips) Crawford. Larry worked at Allied Paper for many years and had owned and operated Otsego Glass until his retirement in 2004. Larry enjoyed racing stock cars and loved all sports, especially bowling, golfing and softball. He was a board member for the Otsego Township Planning Commission for many years. On March 31, 1962 at Oakwood Bible Church he married Sandra Cushing who survives. Also surviving are his children, Randy (Jody) Crawford, Annette (Dave) Mathis and Chris (Cheryl) Crawford; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and brother, Francis Crawford of Gobles. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Larry Crawford Jr. and by his brother, Fred Crawford. a private family funeral service place Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at the Winkel Funeral Home with Pastor Kenneth Smeader officiating. Burial took place place at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Contributions in memory of Larry may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.

Nancy Lee Enos, age 75, went to the Lord on December 30, 2020, after a courageous battle with Covid-19. Nancy was born in Allegan, MI on May 22, 1945, the daughter of Gordon and Geraldine (Arndt) Tyler. Nancy enjoyed attending church, visiting with her Lady Bug friends, and quilting remarkable pieces for her family and friends. Nancy is survived by two children Cherie (David) Genson and Daniel (Julie Hughes) Mastin; brothers Gordon (Betty) Tyler, Cliff (Sue) Tyler; grandchildren Ryan Ewing, Ashley (Ewing) Parsons, Rebecca and Elizabeth Mastin, Ally, Tyler and Alexandra Hughes and also several nieces and nephews. Nancy is preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter. According to her wishes cremation has taken place and the family is planning a celebration of life at a later date when it is safe to gather. The family appreciates all prayers and condolences.

AGE 81 - OTSEGO, MI Dale went home to heaven on Thursday, December 31, 2020. He was blessed to begin 2021 with Jesus and the ability to walk and talk again. Dale was born on January 25, 1939, to Albert & Marion (Miller) Reich in Kalamazoo. Psalm 112 represents how Dale lived out his life in trusting and obeying the God he loved. He served in his church through the years on the trustee board and in many other areas and was always willing to lend a hand to those in need. He also supported many ministries and projects that benefited others. Dale was blessed with God’s wisdom and delighted greatly in God’s word. His words and deeds demonstrated kindness, generosity, goodness and righteousness. His life of integrity blessed many. Dale served as a State Farm agent and manager for over 40 years and enjoyed playing tennis, water skiing, snow skiing, swimming and traveling. Dale is survived by his wife, Beverly; daughter, Robin (Rich) Bacon, son, Todd (Monica) Reich; grandchildren, Angela (Michael) Grimm and Tasha (Kegan) Centala; three great-grandchildren; sister, Sharlene Nishizawa and nieces and nephews. Dale was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sherry Largent. Due to Covid-19 restrictions a private celebration of life service will be held with immediate family. Billy Ray HARRIS AGE 85 - MARTIN, MI

Billy Ray Harris went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, January 4, 2021 at Byron Manor in Byron Center, Michigan. Born May 17, 1935 in Harlan, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Lee and Verda (Adams) Harris and the husband of the late Charlotte Ann (Cowels) Harris. Billy and Charlotte lived most of their lives in Wayland and Martin prior to Charlotte’s passing in 2013. Billy was a hard-working man who did whatever he needed to provide for his family, sometimes working two jobs at a time, and was still more than happy to help out at home whenever Charlotte needed an extra hand. He loved his family deeply and proved to them time and again that he would be there for them. Billy also had a deep love for his God and was a faithful Christian man, but that didn’t mean he didn’t know how to have fun and enjoy his passion for music. One of his favorite pastimes was when his son, Michael, would take him to karaoke on Friday nights at the 10th Street Saloon in Plainwell. Billy would dress up in his cowboy garb, hat and all, and sing his favorite country songs. Matter of fact, his cowboy hat seemed to become a part of his personality and people seemed to gravitate to him, creating even more friends in his life. Billy leaves his family with wonderful memories of a man who enjoyed the life that God gave him and one that made the most of his time here on earth. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Debbie (Ed) Clark, Danny (Michelle) Harris and Michael (Sandra) Harris; two brothers, James Jones and Paul Wayne (Bonnie) Jones; one nephew, Lonnie (Carol) Hampton; many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Along with his parents and his wife, Billy was preceded in death by his two sons, Mark Harris and Jimmy Harris; one grandson, Christopher Harris; one granddaughter, Jennifer Medina; and six siblings, Howard Harris, JB Harris, Kathleen Harris, Irene Harris, Nellie Strange and Jewel Harris. Friends may meet with the family on Friday, January 8, 2021 at Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at which time the funeral service will begin. Elaine (Bourdo) SHEPARD OTSEGO, MI

Elaine (Bourdo) Shepard of Otsego went to be with her Heavenly Father on December 24th, 2020. She was born the daughter of Charles and Marie (Newman) Bourdo in the town of Orangeville, MI. Throughout her life, Elaine loved to travel, read, play cards, and spend time with her family and friends. She never knew a stranger, and she always kept the faith. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents and her three siblings, Dolores, Todd, and Lawrence. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, H. Allen Shepard, her son Charles (Linda) Shepard, her daughter Sue (Jack) Hulbert, her three grandchildren, Evan Shepard, Sarah (Jarren) George and Shawna (Andrew) Patten, and her three great-grandchildren. Elaine brought love, gentleness, and kindness everywhere she went. She will be greatly missed. A memorial service for her will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal church in Hastings, MI at a later date. AGE 72 - OTSEGO, MI Kenneth passed away on January 5, 2021. He was born in Plainwell, on March 25, 1948, the son of Richard and Lois (Weyrick) Adams. He was the longtime owner of Adams Electric. Ken was a great outdoorsman, and he loved to hunt, trap and fish. He really enjoyed fishing at Fish Lake, where he and his brother, Rich would go even as young boys. He loved helping people and had a huge heart. Nothing was more important to him than his family and friends. His loving presence will be missed by many. Kenneth is survived by his daughter Kimberly (Reginald) Adams -Short; son, Kenneth Adams II. Ken was also a father to and loved by Monica (Jonathan) Jacobs, Bill Walden, Luke Adams, and Adam Adams; grandchildren Ashley (Jordan) Dalstra, Amber (Kevin Holcomb) Holland, Jacob Bruischart, Calob Bruischart, Brooklynn Bruischart, Trenton Jacobs, Adrianna Jacobs; siblings, Cathy Adams-Weessies, Richard (Starr) Adams, Nancy (Tim) Adams - Harrington, Julie (Billy) Shannon; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and countless friends. Carolyn K. TAYLOR AGE 81 - OTSEGO, MI

Carolyn passed away Monday, January 4, 2021 at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born December 5, 1939 in Allegan Township, the daughter of James and Laveva (Thaxton) Deaton. Carolyn enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling and bowling and had belonged to a senior bowling league. She loved caring for her rosebushes and watching humming birds and deer. On October 17, 1959 in Plainwell she married William Taylor who survives. Also surviving are her children, Susan Cowels of Kalamazoo and Robert (Julie) Taylor of Plainwell; grandchildren, Carla (Brian) Maurer of Mattawan, Cory (Skye) Taylor of Martin, Casey (Sammie) Taylor of Hopkins, Eric Branch and Lindsey (Dillion) Stanfill; great-grandchildren, Lilah, Chase, Grady, Emmy, Ethan, Keegan, Gleena, Logan and Lilly; sisters, Nancy (Bob) Fry of Otsego, Pat LaFountain of Allegan along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Larry in 1999 and siblings, Bill, Barb and Betty. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. is a boxer mix, with a tender, sweet, loving personality. She enjoys taking walks and walks nice on a leash. Dezzy can be a silly girl too, showing that she still has plenty of energy for fun, zooming around the outside runs, but she is most happy to be near someone who wants to give her affection. Dezzy does like to take a moment or two to check out new people, but she does warm up pretty quickly especially if you have yummy treats and talk to her - she loves to be talked to and told what a good girl she is. Dezzy is 7 years old and weighs approximately 57 pounds. She is well mannered; knows how to sit and shake hands when asked (probably lay down too) and is potty trained. Dezzy may do better in a home where she is the only pet, but she does have a calm, respectful male dog friend she walks with at the shelter. She is such a sweet dog she will be sure to bring her forever home plenty of love and fun. Due to her reserved nature, it is recommended that any children in the home are older teenagers. Think of what would happen if all of us chose light over darkness; love over hate; kindness over rudeness; gentleness over harshness; compassion over selfishness; peace over conflict.

Jesus was the greatest personality who ever walked the face of this earth. “In him was life, that life was the light of men” (John 1:4). Light attracts. Persons from all walks of life were attracted to Him. Light guides us. Jesus has promised to lead us through every challenge we face. Light dispels the darkness. Even a tiny flashlight can light up a dark room. Light makes its presence known. The light of Christ makes its presence known in the world, in the city, and in the home (Matthew 5:14, 15).

One example from history was Phillips Brooks (18351893). He was a longtime distinguished Rector of Boston’s Trinity Church. He is most remembered as lyricist of the familiar Christmas hymn, “O Little Town of Bethlehem.” It was said the day might be dark and gloomy, “but when Phillips Brooks walked down newspaper row all was bright!” Do you know persons like that?

There is an old story about a renowned l9th century author named Robert Louis Stevenson. He spent his childhood in Edinburgh, Scotland. As a young boy, Robert was intrigued by the work of old lamplighters who went about with a ladder and a torch, setting the street lights ablaze for the night. One evening, as he stood watching with fascination, his parents asked him, “Robert what are you looking at out there?” With great excitement he replied, “Look at that man! He’s punching holes in the darkness!” There is an old Greek Proverb which states, “They who have the torch must spread the light.”

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to “punch holes in the darkness” for God. In Your strong name. Amen.
