$128,000 Worth of Food Donated
One of the strengths of Christian is the many Neighbors collaborative partners we have to help our clients. These partnerships have been built over years of serving, and through relationships that our staff have diligently built.
In addition to serving families and individuals curbside at our pantry, we also delivered to shut-ins, the homeless in motels, and those at home with COVID. Thank you for helping us feed our neighbors in need.
Because of this, through our grant dollars, private donations and our collaborative partners we provided over $222,000 in housing stabilization funds in 2021. This support kept lights on, heat in homes, prevented homelessness and housed families who were homeless.

In addition, our case managers provided help with filling out home-heating and rent credits, getting IDs for individuals, and helping to address other barriers that prevent people from stability.

Nanna Roo's celebrated its Grand Opening on Friday, February 4, 2022. It it located in downtown Otsego at 132 W. Allegan St., between Onstaff and the Otsego Barber Shop. Owner KaTrina Powell explained, "I opened Nanna Roo's Wild Boutique as a dedication and memorial tribute to my Nanna Debra Frischkorn. I started this business in the corner of a bedroom and in one year had made enough profit to afford to go into a brick and mortar building and follow my new dreams of giving back to other small businesses." KaTrina began to inquire about space for rent and found out on her birthday that this building, the Stowe Building, was available. Inside are now six rental spaces for vendors, each with their own hours. The open market is open 7 days a week from 8am-5pm and by appointment as late as 8pm for some stores. Some years ago I had the honor of visiting the Holy Land. It was a fascinating experience which opened the meaning of the Scriptures to me. This was especially true when we would visit the holy sites where Jesus performed His ministry on earth, suffered, died and was resurrected. It was amazing to think we could walk where Jesus walked. Each day we took turns leading in devotions. The message of one of my devotions was to be sure we worshipped the Person and not the place.
God hates idolatry. Idolatry is the worship of anything or anyone rather than the One true God. One of the Ten Commandments states “You shall not make for yourself an idol” (Exodus 20:4). An idol may include such things as places, persons, pleasure, position, prestige, power, possessions and prosperity. Among other things, the story of Joshua is one of strong leadership, moral courage, military conquest and successful engagement between the leader and his people. Without a doubt, Joshua was God’s man for the moment. Thus, the Book of Joshua (Old Testament) is about the battles and the blessings. The greatest blessing was when the people of God took possession of the land God had promised Abraham centuries earlier. In his farewell address, Joshua called the people (and us) to decision. Will we remain faithful to the One true God or will we chase after other gods?
Prayer: Dear Lord, may we answer with Joshua, “as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15). In Your strong name. Amen.

Nakita is not only absolutely beautiful, she is also very loving and forms special bonds with those who care for her. Nakita knows several basic commands, she is house broken and crate trained. She loves to play fetch, go for car rides, and go hiking. Nakita would do best in a home with older respectful kids that understand she will need time to adjust to her new home. She can be unsure of new people, but with a slow introduction she warms up really fast and shows her wonderful personality. Nakita would do best as the only dog in her forever home. However, if your home already has a dog, she prefers the company of other German Shepherds (males the best) but does require a slow introduction and some time to get comfortable with them. So, if you already have a dog in your home, a meet and greet with your dog will be conducted at the shelter to make sure the dogs are a good match. Nakita will need a cat-free home/a home free of any small animals (e.g. chickens, bunnies, small dogs, etc.). A quieter home in the county would be ideal. A fenced in yard is also required/no underground electric fences. If you think Nakita might be a good fit for your household please fill out an online application at

Carol Lee CRONKHITE AGE 77 - KALAMAZOO, MI
Carol passed away Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at Bronson Methodist Hospital. Born August 19, 1944 in Detroit, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late James and Irene (Wright) Caton and the wife of Donald Cronkhite, Jr. Carol was a fun-loving woman who enjoyed going to the casino and testing her luck, which was more fun for her because she never seemed to lose! She also enjoyed going to flea markets or staying home and reading a good romance novel. She had a passion for her family and always wanted them to know how important they were to her. The time they had together was very precious to Carol. Carol leaves behind her loving husband, Donald; her son, James F. Cronkhite; her daughter, Tinalea (Larry) Pickard; three grandchildren, Todd Cronkhite, Amanda (Eric) Ramsey and Kami Barnes; nine great grandchildren; her brothers-in-law, Dean Swafford and Bill (Jesse) Cronkhite; and her sister-in-law, Tina Cronkhite. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Timothy Allen Cronkhite; her father- and mother-in-law, Donald Sr. and Ethel Mae Cronkhite; her sister, Susan Swafford; and her brother-in-law, Gary Cronkhite. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Club House at Leisure Lane Apartments, 4300 Leisure Lane, Kalamazoo, MI 49006. Sheri Lynn McCann, 55, of Saline, MI passed away on Sunday, January 30, 2022. She was born on September 15, 1966 in Kalamazoo, MI to James and Marlene Dines. She married Terence McCann on July 22, 1989 and he survives her. She is also survived by her 2 children, Erin (Martin) Kucharek and Thomas McCann, her grandson, Noah Kucharek and her 3 siblings, Dawn (Scot) Ogden, Kelly (Joseph) Bohl, and James Dines. She worked in a pharmacy for nearly 40 years and was a licensed pharmacist for 32 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, swimming, and vacationing by the ocean. One of her favorite past times was watching the weather channel and letting her family know when inclement weather could be on the way. She always said she wanted to experience a hurricane one day. She loved being a grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her only grandson, Noah, any chance she got. She also loved her family vacations every summer at Cedar Point. Jeffrey ‘Jeff’ ANDERSON AGE 57 - PLAINWELL, MI
Jeff passed away February 9, 2022 at his home. Jeff was born October 26, 1964 in Ishpeming, MI the son of Roger and Judy (Salo) Anderson. Jeff was a great high school athlete and attended Central Michigan University and Western Michigan University. He worked for James River and was a self-proclaimed writer. He loved music, poetry and reading. Jeff is survived by his parents, a niece Rachelle Cooley and nephew Matthew Cooley; several great nephews and a niece. He was preceded in death by his sister Cindy Cooley; grandparents, 2 uncles and an aunt. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Larry L. SMITH AGE 72 - OTSEGO, MI
Larry took his final turn and headed for home on February 4, 2022. He was born on April 14, 1949, the eldest son of Malcolm and Dorothy Smith (Chopp). He was a hard worker from a young age, working on the family farm and in the grape vineyards. Following graduation from Plainwell High School, he served his country in the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971. After returning home Larry married Glenda and they were blessed with two daughters, Sheila and Tracey. Larry trained to be a certified farrier and blacksmith and was skilled at his craft. He was a trusted blacksmith working all over the state of Michigan. Larry raced ponies before graduating to Standardbred harness horse racing. He had many memorable horses and drives over the years. He set, and still holds, multiple track records around the state. He was part of a rare triple dead heat with Skyway JayLo in 2018. He travelled to many states to race and gained many friends; among those were Ed and Penny Brown who were close friends and stable mates for many years. Larry was inducted into the Michigan Harness Horseman Hall of Fame in 2011. In 2005, he married Sue and gained two more daughters, Heather and Beth. Larry and Sue enjoyed 16 loving years together. They also enjoyed racing and riding horses, drives to watch the sunset and being with their grandkids. Larry was a very proud Papa. Since their papa had a big tractor and took them for rides his grandchildren referred to him lovingly as Papa Tractor. He doted on them and talked about them with his friends, played VERY loud music and making sure his grandkids knew he would catch a “Grenade” for them. He enjoyed watching them play sports, took them hunting and fishing and even shared a birthday with one of them. Papa Tractor taught them the true meaning of hard work, what “man hands” looked like, and to be kind to others. He would always tell them “Can’t never did anything”. If you couldn’t find him working with horses or attending an event for his grandkids, you could find him on the golf course. He was also an avid hunter who enjoyed sharing his love of the outdoors with his grandchildren. Larry enjoyed a big bowl of popcorn or ice cream for an evening treat. After fair races, he would share his love of chocolate covered cherry flurries and fries with vinegar and “just a little” salt with whoever came along. Larry leaves behind his loving wife, Sue; children Sheila and Rob Sarro, Tracey and Jeff Bryant, Heather and Lamar Cain and Beth and Matthew McRae; grandchildren, Robert, Sam and Savana Sarro, Liam Bryant, Lilyana and Lauryn Cain, Siaara and Asher McRae; siblings, Terrie Lynn, Robin (Jim), Bob (Malissia), Victor (Jodi), Mary (Randy), Larry Joe (Suzanne), Sheryl, Barb (Dan) as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Gary. When remembering Larry many will think of the V of his race colors, white, and gold and green (especially those behind him in the races.) We will miss his charismatic personality, his laugh, his smile, but most of all when he hugged you, he hugged you! According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Larry’s family from 5-8 PM, Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Dress will be casual. Dale Lee PORTER AGE 79 - JACKSON, MI
Dale Lee Porter passed away on Monday, January 24, 2022 in Jackson, Michigan after a brief illness. Dale was born July 8, 1942, the son of Freeman and La Verda Porter. Dale enjoyed being outside, hunting, fishing and camping at the Jones’s family property in northern Michigan. He is survived by his children, Michael, Kevin, Sherry; sisters Marian Jones, Nancy Yoakam; grandchildren Emily, Melanie, Katie, Mindy, Amanda, Miranda, Krisie, Hosanna, Destiny, Austin and Alyssa; great grandchildren, Parker, Preston, and Kennedy along with many nieces and nephews. Dale was preceded in death by his parents and son Steven Porter. Cremation has taken place; a memorial will be held at a later date.
James Q. LAMSON AGE 88 - OTSEGO, MI
James died Dec. 27, 2021, Cornerstone Hospice, The Villages, FL. He was born January 3, 1933 to Jesse & Henrietta Lamson in Kalamazoo, MI. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1951. On February 7, 1953 he married Margaret “Maggie” Youngs his high school sweetheart. Jim served as a gunner on a B-26 light attack bomber in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. When not flying on a mission Jim was often asked to put his artistic ability to use by painting cartoons, names, etc. on the noses of squadron aircraft. Some of his paintings have been recognized in Korean Air War publications. He was awarded the Air Medal for courageous actions against the enemy for a special mission flown to drop flares on the attacking Chinese troops. After the cease-fire he joined his squadron in building a small orphanage outside their base at Kunsan with old tent frames & wood from bomb crates. Jim took great pride in helping the orphans. In 2003 Jim & Maggie had the privilege to travel to Korea during Korea's 50 year celebration of the end of the Korean conflict. At the award dinner they were seated at a table with the current commander of Kunsan's Air Force Base. Jim was thrilled when told by the commander that the orphanage had continued to grow into a 3 story building. It was an honor when Jim was personally awarded the Korean Service Medal by President Roh Moo-Hyun in gratitude for his service.Jim earned Master degrees from Arizona State University & Western Michigan University. He taught art at Saginaw Township schools, Ann Arbor Pioneer High School & retired from Ohio University. As an Assistant Professor of Art Jim delighted in sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with his students for painting, casting bronze and pewter sculptures, working with clay and printmaking - both serigraphs and etchings. He also loved the many hours spent in his studio and continued with his art throughout the rest of his life. Jim's love for art continues to flow with creativity and humor through the many lives he touched along the way.While attending Arizona State University Jim joined a flying club, earned his pilot license, bought a Cessna 172 & was able to fulfill his love of flying and share it with Maggie and their children. Jim was an active church council member assuming many duties as well as teaching Sunday school in churches wherever he lived. In St. Clairsville, Ohio he designed & built a communal set & baptismal font. This year it was again used for the baptism of the newest greatgrandchild. In the 1980s Jim & Maggie took advantage of an opportunity to teach at a teacher training college in Botswana, Africa. After six years Jim was asked to illustrate and co-administrate a literacy program for the entire country. This venture afforded them the opportunity to travel to cities & remote villages working & training teachers & children the concept of the program. They slept in schoolrooms & tents. These trips were like being on safari as they often came across wild animals in their travels between schools. Working with these teachers was the most rewarding & satisfying work of his life. Upon their return to the States Jim went to work for Flexible Furniture in Plainwell as a computer draftsman retiring again in 1998. Jim converted their van into a camper for extensive traveling & spent winters in the southwest & south eventually becoming Florida "snowbirds." Jim was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Robert, Jerry, Fritz, Junior, Delbert Lamson; sister Joyce Golightly; grandson Isreal Lamson-Yowell; son-in-law Curtis Smith & granddaughter Tristan Smith. He is survived by his wife Margaret, daughters Vicki Lamson (Bryan Khure), Athens, OH; Tamara (Lee) Shepherd, Belmont, OH; Teresa Smith (Robert Johnson), Kalamazoo, MI; son Kyle (Patricia) Lamson, Juneau, AK; grandchildren Jaime & David Shepherd, Ryan Smith, Jennifer, Sarah & Jessie Lamson, 8 great-grandchildren, many nephews & nieces.
