Need More Wisdom?

There's definitely a need for increased wisdom today! On August 23, 2016, a male University of Pittsburgh student climbed on top of a Qdoba restaurant with a young lady he had just met. He decided to impress her by jumping down to the roof of the Bruegger’s Bagels below. He did not succeed! Instead, he fell between the two buildings, remaining trapped for about 4 hours in a space about a foot and a half at the widest. Rescuers had to jackhammer a massive hole into the Qdoba restaurant wall to set him free. The student suffered a broken ankle, which was repaired. He's okay now, and hopefully a little wiser! There is no report as to whether the young lady was impressed or not. We all could use more wisdom. Psalm 119:97104 tells us that we can actually excel in godly wisdom by developing a love for God's Word. In verse 97, the psalmist tells us "Oh, how I love Your law!” In vs. 103, he compares the sweetness of the Word of God to that of honey. This love for God's Word motivates him to meditate on it "all day long." It gives him more wisdom than his teachers (vs. 99). How do we develop this kind of love for God's Word? First, we recognize the uniqueness of the Bible. It is a special gift from God to us, revealing our purpose and meaning in life. It shows us how God calls us to live. Next, we receive the blessings of obedience to Scripture. The more that we follow it, the more we see of God's goodness. That produces a greater desire to obey God and experience more of His love! Why not gain more wisdom today by studying God's Word?

Let us begin with our belief in God. Who can explain it? When I attended Graduate School (Seminary) I learned many so-called proofs for the existence of God. Yet I believed in God long before I went to seminary. I cannot explain air, but I breathe it. I cannot explain electricity, but I use it. I cannot explain the properties of water, but I drink it. The Bible does not try to prove the existence of God. The Bible assumes the existence of God. In the very first verse of the Bible we read, “In the beginning God …” (Genesis l: 1). In other words, God does not depend on our reasons in order for us to believe in Him. Persons experience God in a variety of ways. This was true of many of the Bible characters. Some of us, like Apostle Paul, have a dramatic and emotional experience. Others cannot name the time or place but, like Timothy, experience salvation as steady growth. Some, like Zacchaeus, experience spiritual rebirth by a quiet decision. The important thing is that we believe. To say “I believe in God” means more than intellectual assent. It means to repent of our sins, trust Him for salvation and commit our lives to His will. In Hebrews 11:1 we read, “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” It is also true that faith is something we experience but cannot fully explain. Some years ago a Russian dancer, by the name of Anna Pavlova, was asked what was meant by a certain dance she performed. She replied, “If it could be said in words, there would be no need to dance it.” It is true that some experiences are too big for words. Prayer: Dear Lord, may my experience with you be a living testimony of your faithfulness and love. Amen

AGE 90 - OTSEGO, MI Helen passed away Friday, February 10, 2017 at Diana’s Care in Otsego. She was born January 24, 1927 in Plainwell the 13th out of 14 children born to Charles and Anna (McSorley) Sweeney. Helen had worked at Allied Paper and then at Kal-Equip until her retirement in 1966. In her spare time she enjoyed crocheting, doing jigsaw puzzles, watching movies and spending time with her dog. On February 21, 1944 in Plainwell she married Nelson “Sonny” Hayse who passed away in 1993. Surviving are her daughter, Shelia Hayse of Kalamazoo, 4 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and greatgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, son, Dan Hayse and by her siblings. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Barbara passed away Monday, February 13, 2017 at her home in Plainwell. She was born December 23, 1935 in Plainwell the daughter of Clinton and Blondene (Marsh) Plotts. Barb had been a florist at the Big Top Grocery in Plainwell for many years. In her spare time she enjoyed playing cards, traveling, feeding the squirrels and birds, dancing, working in her flower garden, singing and whistling, following the Tigers and Lions, taking care of her pets and playing softball until her kids encouraged her to stop at age 50. On January 23, 1960 in Otsego she married Ramon Thompson who passed away in 2010. Surviving are her daughters, Patricia (Bill) Harper, Peggy Thompson, Tammy (Jim) Thompson-Drake, all of Otsego and Joni (Glenn) McNamara of White Pigeon; 8 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren with one on the way; siblings Sandy (Ron) McNees, Terri Plotts and Ron Plotts; several nieces and nephews and special friend, Aunt Jo. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Robert; grandson, Billy Harper and siblings, LaRae Houser and Dick Plotts. Funeral services were held Thursday, February 16, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Celebrant, Molly Wieber officiated. According to her wishes cremation took place. For 23 years, we have done collision, frame and never ending rust work. I, Brad Herrington, have decided to pursue my true passion, custom and restoration. This doesn't mean that we're turning our backs on our wonderful customers.

As of March 1st we will no longer take new customers and will not be doing any rust repair work. With my wife Aimee by my side, we will focus on custom and restoration work. Since Aimee will be in the shop working with me, we will have limited office hours and any estimates will be by appointment only.
