How Does Spinal Decompression Work?

Discs do not have a supply of blood vessels to nourish and replenish them; rather they depend on a transfer of fuids, nutrients, and oxygen from above and below vertebrae. This transfer of nutrients is facilitated by the difference in pressure between the inside of the discs, and the surrounding vertebrae and blood vessels. Severely damaged intervertebral discs seldom heal as the discs are constantly under pressure. Decompression, or the reduction of pressure inside the discs, facilitates the transfer of fuids, nutrients, and oxygen back inside the disc which promotes the retraction of bulging or herniated discs. Further, the formation of new collagen begins to take place in and around the injured disc midway through the treatment protocol, leading to a strong, healthy disc.

Can Decompression Help with Sciatica?

In the lumbar spine, compressed, bulging, or herniated discs can impinge the nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve. Irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve can cause severe low back pain as well as numbness, tingling, weakness, and pain radiating into the buttock and the back of the leg. These symptoms may travel all the way to the calf or foot. Injections can reduce infammation of the sciatic nerve, but don’t directly heal the bulging or herniated disc. This means the symptoms may return when the injection wears off. Surgery can trim off part of the bulged disc, but still leaves the disc compressed, which often leads to degenerative disc disease and further problems down the road. Non-surgical spinal decompression takes pressure off the injured discs, allowing them to rehydrate and heal, naturally taking pressure off the pinched sciatic nerve. This often resolves the problem

WHY IS WTHE SPINE SO PRONE TO INJURY?

Your spine must be both stable and flexible to support upright posture, allowing you to bend and twist. Thisl is mechanically challenging and makes your spine vulnerable to injury. The spine is made up of a chain of bones called vertebrae that are connected together by ligaments and muscles. A disc separates each vertebrae and acts like a cushion, absorbing shock along the spine. The Compressed disc is made up of a jelly-like nerve root substance known as the nucleus, covered with many strong outer layers called the annulus. The discs are prone to injury and degeneration as we use our backs each day. They are compressed, and torqued through sitting, bending and lifting. In the two lower levels of the lumbar spine, stress forces can equal 2,000 to 3,000 pounds of pressure per square inch. Repeated injury weakens and eventually tears the annulus. With increased pressure inside the discs, these tears allow the disc to bulge like an old tire with a broken casing. If all of the layers of the annulus break, the jelly-like nucleus will ooze out of the disc causing a disc herniation. A bulging or herniated disc may press on spinal nerves causing stenosis, sciatica, or radiculopathy. Spinal decompression can help restore injured discs to their original healthy state.

What is a Decompression Session Like?

Typical patients find spinal decompression to be a relaxing, painless procedure that in most cases can be completed in a few weeks on an outpatient basis. The procedure is performed with the patient fully clothed and is safe, painless and extremely effective. In fact, it is not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during the procedure. Each session has a cumulative effect designed to signifcantly reduce pain and improve function as patients progress through the decompression program.

BBB: Beware of scam calls claiming to be from IRS, U.S. Treasury Are you receiving calls from scammers? Does this sound familiar? “I’m calling about an enforcement action taken by the U.S. Treasury. I advise you to cooperate with us, and help us to help you.” Often, you may be told you owe years of back taxes to the IRS, and that if you refuse to pay, you'll spend time behind bars. “All you can do is ignore it,” said Tom Stephens, president of the BBB. “They hope eventually that someone will call back.”

Stephens says the scam that continues because it is working. “If you get a call like that,” advised Stephens, “the best thing you can do is hang up the phone.” According to Stephens, the IRS will never contact customers over the phone regarding notices of payments owed. He said the agency will first contact debtors through U.S. mail.

The Better Business Bureau also issued the following advice for consumers: • Do not rely on caller ID alone to authenticate a caller. Criminals can spoof caller ID numbers. • Hang up on any caller that makes you uncomfortable or tries to pressure you into making a payment without any written proof of a debt owed.

Sometimes, we discover God's will because it just happens to us! Charlesletta Williams, age 75, of Texas, watched the weather report with her adult son Ricky one evening recently, and discovered a tornado was headed their way. They climbed into the bathtub, believing it was the safest place in the house. At 130 mph, the tornado ripped the roof off, tossed the tub in the air, and rotated it repeatedly. The twister landed the tub, with its 2 occupants, a distance of 200 yards into a nearby woods. Although a little stiff, 75-year-old Charlesletta is doing well, and her son Ricky feels fine. Family members acknowledged that God was watching over them. Most often, we discover God's will through Scripture and the Holy Spirit. In Acts 20, Paul shares a final message with the elders, or spiritual leaders, from the local church in Ephesus. He says in vs. 24, "Keep watch over…all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers". Since the Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit appoints some as shepherds, it makes sense that the Spirit calls believers to actively participate in local churches and receive that spiritual leadership. Scripture tells us to be a consistent part of a local church. Hebrews 10:25 instructs, "let us not give up meeting together". Acts 2:42 explains that believers in the very first church "devoted themselves" to teaching, fellowship, worship, prayer, compassion, and outreach-just as we should also do today! God wants each of us to consistently participate in one local church family. He does not want us to jump around, or attend when we feel like it, or go a couple of times a year. Let's obey the Holy Spirit by making a commitment to a local church today!

There is an old story about how the devil tried to destroy the world. He called his chief assistants and they advised him as follows:

Anger: “I will set brother against brother” Lust: “I will make love disappear by defiling human minds.” Greed: “Humanity’s own passions will destroy them.” Gluttony & Drunkenness said they would destroy people by destroying their bodies. Envy, Jealousy, Hate and Idleness added their advice. None of these satisfied the devil. So his last assistant came in and said, “I shall talk to humankind in glowing terms about what God wants them to be and do. I shall encourage them to live godly lives.” The devil was dismayed by such talk until the assistant added, “However, I will tell them there is no hurry, and they can put all these things off until tomorrow.” The devil replied, “You shall go to earth and destroy humankind.” The assistant’s name was Procrastination. We can all relate to the story because we all have a tendency to put things off. Some examples are the phone call that was never made; the letter that was never written; the “thank you” that was left unsaid; the “I love you” that was not spoken; the commitment not made. I could write an article on people who said to me, “I would attend church, but …” Jesus talked about the tragedy of the unseized moment. The Rich Ruler walked away from commitment (Luke l8); Five Foolish Maidens missed the wedding (Matthew 25); The One Talent Servant buried his talent (Matthew 25); Pontius Pilate missed his moment (Matthew 27). The longer we put things off, the less likely we are to do them. There is an old gospel song which says, “Faith is the victory that overcomes the world.” With God’s help, “we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Romans 8:37). AGE 75 - PLAINWELL, MI Julia passed away at home on Tuesday, February 21, 2017. Julia was born in Ross County, Ohio on September 1, 1941 the daughter of the late Carl and Martha (Coder) Holloway. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elvin M. Smith; daughter, Brenda Smith; sisters, Alice “Sue” King and Helen Vanderhoff and her brother, Danny Holloway. Julia is survived by her children, Diane (Michael) Johnson, Elvin (Shelia) Smith and Carol (Rick) Hudson; partner, Carl Sanford; six grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; sister, Dorothy (Bob) Irving and brother, Guy Holloway; as well as many nieces and nephews. In accordance with her wishes cremation will take place and private interment will be at Mt. Home Cemetery in Otsego. Delores (Dee) KEIM

AGE 81 - PLAINWELL, MI (Formerly of Cedaredge, CO) Dee regained her sight and the use of her legs when she went home to her Lord on February 14, 2017. During her struggle with Macular degeneration, which eventually took her eyesight, and numerous strokes which left her unable to walk, Dee's positive spirit and never give up attitude was an inspiration to all who knew her. Dee will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her kindness, and delicious Sunday dinners. Her greatest joy was her family and spending time with them. She loved traveling with her husband Ron and enjoyed camping, fishing, quilting, gardening and watching the birds. Surviving are her children, Sherri (Mark) Bronson, Jeannie Volker, Scott (Dorothy) Keim, Dawn Burwell, Rock (Winona) Keim, Mark Keim, 15 grandchildren and a "passel" of great-grandchildren, a brother, Robert Long and sister, Myra Baugher. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Ronald Keim, her parents, Richard and Minnie (Hinz) Long, daughter-in-law, Robin and grandson, Jay. Memorials may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice, or Christian Neighbors. A private celebration of life will take place in the spring.

Tom passed away Monday, February 20, 2017 at his home in Plainwell. He was born March 18, 1967 in Kalamazoo the son of William and Linda (Shewmake) Darrow. Tom was a 1985 Parchment High School graduate and served his country in the US Marine Corp. For several years he had worked at Kalamazoo Public Schools and most recently doing construction with Local Union 355 in Battle Creek. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors. Tom was a great dad and a very loving person. Surviving are his daughters, Samantha (Jesse) Berens and Amanda Darrow both of Dorr; 2 grandchildren, Wyatt and Dannilynn Berens; mother, Linda McCormick; siblings, James, Kurt and Kevin Darrow and several nieces and nephews, including special nephew, Will Darrow who held a special place in Tom’s heart. He was preceded in death by his father; step-father, Clifford McCormick; stepmother, Shirley Darrow and close friend, Joe Garza who served with Tom in the Marine Corp. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes with Military Honors will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta.
