There is an old story about a man who accidentally ran his car into a ditch out in the country. He asked a farmer for help. The farmer said, “I have an old mule named Dusty and I think he can pull you out.” He hooked Dusty up to the car and when all was ready, the farmer snapped the reigns and shouted, “Pull Jack! Pull Joe! Pull Tom! Pull Dusty!” Surprisingly the old mule named Dusty pulled the car with relative ease. The car owner was impressed and very grateful.

He thanked the farmer profusely and said to him, “Let me ask you something. Why did you call Dusty by four different names?” The farmer responded, “Well, it’s like this. Old Dusty’s eyesight is just about gone … and if he thought he was the only one pulling, he would not have tried at all!”

The burdens of life can weigh us down, sap our strength and destroy our confidence. The good news is that we do not have to carry our burdens alone.

Audrey was born to Thelma (Morris) Thomas and Basil Thomas on August 26th, 1947 in Traverse City, Michigan. The family lived in southwest Michigan, settling in Portage where Audrey graduated from Portage Central High School in 1965. Audrey married EJ Hart on October 28th, 1966. She graduated from Wright Beauty Academy that same year and worked as a professional hairdresser before switching careers to medical and dental offices. Audrey went on to earn certifications in office administration and enjoyed a long career at Western Michigan University in the Office of Conferences and Institutes. Audrey and EJ lived in Chicago, Illinois, Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Madison, Wisconsin before moving to Plainwell, Michigan in 1981 where they own and operate Hart’s Jewelry. Volunteerism was an important aspect of Audrey’s life. She volunteered with the Red Cross, Fort Custer, and was active in Parent Teacher Organizations at her daughters’ schools. Audrey and EJ were involved in local soccer for many years. In more recent years, Audrey served as a president of Sylvia’s Place and was on the fundraising committee for the O’Leary Foundation. Audrey was an avid quilter and member of the American Quilting Association. She enjoyed sharing her skill and passion for quilting and provided quilts for many local charitable organizations. She may perhaps be best remembered for her chocolate chip cookies, which were without comparison. Audrey was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Thelma. She is survived by her husband EJ, siblings Russ Thomas and Patricia (Michael) Thomas-Freese, daughters Erin (Chris) Bolda and Nikki (Matt) HartBrinkley, and grandsons Damien Hutton, Ethan Bolda, Jeremy Bolda, and Elliot Brinkley. Audrey will be laid to rest at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. A memorial service will be held later in the spring. Contributions in memory of Audrey may be made to Sylvia’s Place.

Judy Ann VanDenBerg, age 74, passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2022 after having complications from knee surgery. Judy was born on March 19, 1947 in Kalamazoo, to William and Barbara Loveland. The family moved to Pine Lake where Judy grew up. She graduated from Delton High School in 1965. After graduation she met her husband Paul VanDenBerg and was married on her birthday in 1966. They spent 49 wonderful years together until his passing. Judy and Paul owned and operated the family dairy farm where they raised their four sons. Judy loved to take care of the calves and sell sweet corn in the summer. In 2021 Judy and her family celebrated the farms centennial anniversary. After retiring from the farm, Judy went back to school and became a CNA. She worked in the Out-Patient Surgery Unit at Borgess Hospital for several years. Judy loved to help her son Michael with the garden they planted together. One of the goals was to grow giant pumpkins. The largest pumpkin so far was 250lbs. Judy loved spending time with her grandkids. One of her favorite things was going to the Allegan County Fair and watching her grandkids show their 4-H animals. She looked forward to celebrating Christmas every year because she got to spend time with her family and have the Monopoly championship she held until this year. Judy got engaged to Ron Culter this past year and they were planning on getting married in the near future. Judy will be missed by all of her family and many friends. Surviving are her sons, Michael (Chris) VanDenBerg, Robert (Stacey) VanDenBerg and Jason (Angie) VanDenBerg; grandchildren, Christopher (Catrin) VanDenBerg, Molly (Chris Myland) VanDenBerg, Joseph VanDenBerg, Samantha VanDenBerg, Cody Schmidt, Laura (Dirk) Stoneman, Vanessa VanDenBerg, Tristan VanDenBerg, Lexus VanDenBerg and Ava VanDenBerg; great-grandchildren, Rune VanDenBerg, Kit VanDenBerg and Adley Stader; brother, William (Bonnie) Loveland; sistersin-law, Betty Hotchkiss and Janet Martin; fiancé, Ron Cutler along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Douglas VanDenBerg; brother, David Loveland and brothers-in-law, Ron Hotchkiss and Greg Martin. It is with great sadness that the family of Richard L. Carpenter, Jr. announces his passing on February 3, 2022. Richard was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on July 13, 1937, the first child of four to Richard Lowell and Lela Ruth Carpenter. He graduated from Plainwell High School (class of 1956) and attended Western Michigan University where he studied Paper Technology. He started his career at Weyerhaeuser, then Kimberly Clark, which prompted the families move to Redding, California in the mid 60’s. It was in Redding where he put down his roots and finished out his 40+ year career in the paper industry at Simpson Paper. He was an active member of Toastmasters and while never one to sit around, after retirement Rich bought and ran two Papa Murphy’s franchises, one in Newport, Oregon and one in Twin Falls, Idaho. Rich was athletically gifted, his love of sports beginning at seven, with his first catcher’s mitt. He was all conference baseball during high school and continued to play organized ball into his adult life. He passed this passion down to his kids. Whether it was a neighborhood pickup game, little league, or college athletics, he was always the supporting voice in the crowd. Rich was an avid angler and a lover of old country music, traits he passed on to his kids. Many summers were spent camping and fishing throughout Northern California. Weekend trips consisted of cheese, crackers, potatoes and catch your own dinner- thankfully, fish were plentiful then. He was a lover of popcorn, beer, and a good comedy show. Many family desserts consisted of popcorn, typically on days ending in ‘Y’. Through his life, Rich was blessed with two special “bonus” families. He met Sharon Kelley in retirement in Twin Falls, who he joyfully shared the last decade of his life with. Lucky enough to find each other later in life, they enjoyed driving the back roads, visiting family, and their shared love of pie and ice cream. She also introduced him to new passions in diving into local history, dancing at the senior center, and her large family, who loved him as their own and played a major role in the success of their later years together. After finding each other, they could rarely if ever be found apart. Sharon passed 3 days after Rich, not wanting to miss another drive through the country. Another family fortunate enough to love him like their own came from a young boy Rich met in Rogue River, Oregon, Chris Ordner, who he took under his wing, and with whom he shared his love for fishing, the outdoors, and baseball. Chris accompanied Rich in many moves between Oregon and California, ultimately landing in Twin Falls. It was there that Chris formed a family of his own with wife Helen and boys Eli and Oliver, who have always known and loved “Grandpa Rich” as part of their family. Richard will be lovingly remembered by his four children and their spouses, Cheryl & Leroy Bybee, Spanish Fork, Utah, Kathy Carpenter & Judy Sherwood, Chico, California, Robb & Dawn Carpenter, Anderson, California, Amy Carpenter & Lee Driskoll, Redding, California. He also leaves behind 7 grandchildren: Balyn, Shelsea, Rachel, Jon, Hannah, Justin & Cody and 2 great grandchildren Elleigh and Kyzer. Rich leaves behind his brothers, Bill (Michelle) Carpenter & Kenneth Carpenter. He was preceded in death by his sister Phyllis Bierema.

Amy passed away Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at her home in Portage. She was born June 12, 1978 in Plainwell, the daughter of Jeff Keith and Susan Fooy. For 12 years Amy worked in accounting and restaurant management. In 2007 she started pursuing her true passion of selling antiques and collectables. Amy was a fierce mother and was a huge advocate for her daughters. She made their house a home and loved her family more than anything. Amy was no quitter, she was an unstoppable force. She could make any trip into an adventure. She was very crafty and in her free time enjoyed skiing and doodling. On September 25, 1998 she married Mark Morey who survives. Also surviving are her daughters, Mikayla and Kaitlyn; father, Jeff (Tanya) Keith; step-father, Brian Bonnell; brothers, Jeff (Meredith) Keith, Cody Bonnell, Kenneth Rose Jr., Seth Rose, Eli Keith and Jasper Keith; sister, Heather (Jeff) Kiel; father-in-law, Richard Morey; mother-inlaw, Karen (Jamie) Reaume; brother-in-law, Mike Morey along with many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Susan Bonnell, grandparents, Louis and Marcelline Keith and Tyna Keith and brother-in-law, Mitchell Morey. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Amy’s family from 5-7 PM, Thursday, March 3, 2022, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Amy may be made to the Epilepsy Foundation.

AGE 83 - KALAMAZOO, MI Susanna passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at her home in Alamo. She was born May 25, 1938 in Plainwell, the daughter of Richard and Anna (Verploegh) Bingham. For many years she worked at PNC Bank until her retirement in May 1998. In her free time Susanna enjoyed fishing, bowling, sewing, reading, playing cards, traveling and watching her grandkids play sports. On March 21, 1958 in Alamo, she married Jack Kisinger who survives. Also surviving are her children, Michael Kisinger, Phillip (Shari) Kisinger and Sandra (John) Lucki; grandchildren, Shelby Kisinger, Tori (Ben) Black, Logan Kisinger, Lexie Kisinger, Kyle McElyea, Scott McElyea, Anna Lucki and Johnny Lucki; 2 great-grandchildren, Emerson and Beckham Black; brother, Richard (Dolores) Bingham; several nieces and nephews and best friend, Donna Howe. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Nancy Sherburne; daughter-in-law, Pam Kisinger and best friend, John Howe. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Susanna’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Monday, February 28, 2022 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of the memorial service at 11:00 A.M., with celebrant, Bill Rose officiating.
