Maxine “Macky” OETMAN AGE 79 - PLAINWELL, MI
Maxine passed away Friday, February 19, 2021 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. She was born January 16, 1942 in Magoffin, Missouri, the daughter of Albert and Mary Ingram. Macky worked at Flex Fab in Hastings and FEMA Corporation in Kalamazoo for many years. In her free time she enjoyed going to car shows. Macky loved collecting butterflies and angel figurines. On December 12, 1981 she married Don Smith who passed away in 2010. On May 5, 2017 in Allegan she married William Oetman who survives. Also surviving are her daughter, Nancy (Doug) Risner of Delton; 4 grandchildren, Bryan (Melissa) Risner, Steve Risner, Heather Hall and Heidi (Tony) Pinks; 9 great-grandchildren; sister, Eilene Burke of Arizona; nephew, Jeffrey Burke and step-children, David Smith, Don (Michelle) Smith and Teresa Rayburn. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Don and son, Mike Morse. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Pastor Mike Risner officiated. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. AGE 82 - PLAINWELL, MI munity House. Breezy was a member of the Jaycees and spent 37 years as an active member of the Gun Plains Township volunteer fire department. Breezy was also proud to be a blood donor and rarely missed an opportunity to donate. In 1961, Nancy gave birth to their first son, William David (Bill), and then in 1965 to their second son, Patrick Lee. Breezy liked to relax and enjoyed time with his family on various vacations. Nancy & Breezy also loved their visits to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula where they vacationed for over 20 years with longtime friends Larry & Patsy Nyberg. Jim passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born April 14, 1952 in Plainwell the son of Mickle and Vina (Vanderpool) Coburn. Jim loved to be outdoors. He enjoyed shotgun sports and was a member of the Gun River Conservation Club and the Barry County Skeet and Trap Club. More than anything he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. On August 28, 1996 he married Debra Hoard who survives. Also surviving are his children, Cory (Carrie) Coburn, Jeremy Coburn and James (Tammi) Sprau all of Martin; 8 grandchildren, Caylee, Karra, Collin, Kaden, Cirsten, Cooper, Clay and Willow; siblings, Larry, Gary, Clint, Evelyn, Garnet, Linda and Dorothy along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Clyde, Carl, Gwen, Charlotte and Carol. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Jim’s family from 5-7 PM, Friday, March 5, 2021 at the Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego where a private family memorial service will take place at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 6, 2021 with Celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Burial of ashes will take place at South Martin Cemetery. In accordance with covid -19 guidelines a limit of 25 people at a time will be allowed and masks and social distancing will be required. “Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling there…” (Matthew 21:12)
From now through Easter these articles will focus on some of the last events of our Lord’s last week on earth. We begin with the cleansing of the temple (Matthew 21:12-17). HOLY MONDAY Love’s courage was seen when Jesus entered Jerusalem triumphantly on what we call Palm Sunday (Matthew 21:5). That courage was repeated on Monday when Jesus cleansed the Temple (Matthew 21:12).
The outer court (Court of the Gentiles) was open to any who might come to worship God. It was the only outer court where Gentiles were allowed to worship. It was the time of the Passover when Jews from all over the world came to celebrate the festival. Every Jew was required to pay a temple tax near or at the Passover time.

There were two kinds of trading in the outer courts: (1) Money-changing. The task of money-changers was to change unsuitable currency into the correct currency. (2) Selling of doves and other animals for animal sacrifices. The issue was that money changers and merchants took unfair advantage of the poor by charging exorbitant prices. Jesus caused an uproar by overturning the tables of the money-changers and the benches of those who sold doves. It was clearly an act of love’s courage in the form of righteous anger directed at those who willfully exploited the poor. Simply stated: They had turned the house of prayer into a den of thieves” (Jesus’ words: Matthew 21:13). Moreover, with all the commotion, it kept the Gentiles from being able to worship God.
By His actions, Jesus provoked the chief priests and teachers of the law (Matthew 21:15). By the end of the week, the opposition would oppose Him in open conflict leading to His death on a cross. During that same event it is recorded, “The blind and the lame came to Him at the Temple, and He healed them” (Matthew 21:14). In other words, there are two sides to God’s love: Judgment and Mercy. Take-aways: • Justice begins in the House of God. • Let the Church be a House of Prayer for all people. • Let the people of God respect sacred places of worship. • Let the people of God stop any activity that blocks true worshippers from worshipping God. Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “I have in my heart a small, shy plant called reverence; I cultivate that on Sundays.” May this be our prayer for the church, especially during this Holy Season.
Prayer: Dear Lord, we pray for the recovery of reverence in our hearts and in our churches. In Your strong name. Amen.
