“THE MIND OF THE MASTER”

It is easy to read the above verse and come to the conclusion that no one can have the mind of Christ. To many, having the mind of Christ may suggest a state of perfection or at the least having the feeling of superiority over others.

We are relieved to learn that having the mind of Christ means to imitate Him. To imitate Him is to be like Him. The Common English Bible translation invites us to “Adopt the attitude that was in Christ Jesus.” The New Century version reads, “In your lives you must think and act like Christ Jesus.”

Thankfully, we do not have to this in our own power. We are inspired by His example, motivated by His love and empowered by His Spirit. This is a glorious opportunity and awesome challenge. We turn to one of the most powerful passages in the Bible (Philippians 2:5-11) to guide us in becoming more like Him. These words describe how Christ humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death on a cross where He died for our sins. Thus, to have the mind of Christ is to have ... Christ-like Humility

To humble ourselves before God is to take on a servant mind-set. Sometimes our ego gets in the way because we think more about ourselves than we do about others. The great Mother Teresa said, “A life not lived for others is not a life.” Christ-like Obedience

To obey is to believe God’s Word, trust God’s Word and to follow God’s Word. This brings to mind the words of an old hymn, “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey” (John H. Sammis, 1887). Christ-like Love

Andrew was preceded in death by his sister, Gabrielle Smith in 2016 and his grandmother, Janice McGuire. Louise Whiffin, daughter of William and Fannie Abrams was born February 9, 1928. She graduated from Plainwell High School in 1946. Louise was a member of the Cooper Congregational Church since 1943-where she was a secretary, a Deacon & an organist. She was a member of 4-H where she was a leader for 21 years. Louise married Wes Whiffin January 18, 1947; they were married for 64 years. Wes died in 2011. Louise worked as a secretary for Plainwell High School for 16 years. She & Wes were members of the Original Crestview Golf Club. Louise belonged to the Genealogical Society from 1989. She loved traveling; visiting more than 20 countries. Louise volunteered at the Ransom Library, ARO (Appalachian Reach Out) and at Rose Arbor Hospice of Kalamazoo. Surviving are her children: Linda (Steve) Strauch, Diane Whiffin, and Steve (Phuong) Whiffin; grandchildren: Kerry (Chris) Mitchell, Shannon Payne, Jaime (Brian) Strauch-Lewis, and Shayla Whiffin; great grandchildren: Morgan and Josh Mitchell, Shelby and Mattie Payne and her brother Bill. Louise was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Ames and her brother, Dick Abrams. Thank you to West Michigan Cancer Center and Rose Arbor Hospice for their loving care during her last days. Lyndon died peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family on Sunday, January 27, 2019. Full of life and always with a smile to brighten someone’s day, Lyndon Cronen was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He loved to surround himself with loved ones as well as ensure that everyone was made to feel comfortable in his presence. Lyndon was well known throughout the community for being generous beyond measure. Known to many as Mr. Otsego, his warm personality will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. AGE 43 - MARTIN, MI

Jill Marie (Sturgis) Harris left to be with the Lord and reunited with her dad on January 24, 2019 after enduring medical issues. She was born October 2, 1975 into the loving arms of Terry and Marcia (Moored) Sturgis. Jill attended Martin Schools where she enjoyed being involved with sports, including basketball, track, soccer and dance lessons at Sisters 3. A few years after graduating, Jill was blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Amanda. Later Jill enlisted in the U.S. Army and earned the Commanding General Award and worked in radiology. While in the army she met the love of her life James. They were married in May 2006 at Gun Lake and were blessed with their wonderful children, Taegan and Torryn. After Jill was discharged from the Army, her husband remained until his retirement. As a military family they lived in Alaska, New York and Alabama. In 2017 they moved back to Michigan to be closer to Jill’s family. Jill was an amazing mother for her adored children spending every possible minute with them. Family was everything to her. She also loved her four-legged family members. Jill will be remembered as a beautiful, loving young woman. Her flashing smile and contagious laugh will be missed. Jill may be gone but will never be forgotten and will always be loved. Jill was preceded in death by her dad, Terry and niece, Ilah Ann Sturgis. The loving family surviving are her husband, James; children, Amanda, Taegan and Torryn; stepchildren, Kaela, Mandy and Jay; grandchildren, Hassan, Kateri, Floyd and Kalayah; mom, Marcia; brothers, Jarrod (Tami) Sturgis and Joe (Chelsea) Sturgis along with many nieces, nephews and extended family members. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at 2:30 P.M., Friday, February 1, 2019 at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. Jack Elwood FENTON AGE 87 - MARTIN, MI

Jack Fenton went to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, January 29, 2019 surrounded by his family. Born July 28, 1931 to Elwood and Clara Fenton in Wayland Township, Jack Fenton began his farming career at the age of 7 after the unexpected death of his father. In 1950, he graduated from Wayland High School. Shortly after Jack and his brother Eugene established Fenton Brothers’ Dairy Farm. He married Patricia Wilcox (Lang) on January 6, 1966 and over the years they built a family of six children: Tammy, Deborah, Mary, Susan, Jack, and Jeff. During this time, Jack sat on multiple boards focused on schooling and West Michigan dairy and agriculture. In 1979, in addition to their farming business, Jack and Pat established Fenton’s Red Barn, serving the Martin community until 1996. They sold the farm and restaurant in 1996, to focus on each other and family by vacationing in Traverse City, Michigan and Sun City, Florida. Jack was preceded in death by his two brothers Charles Fenton and Eugene Fenton, Sister Anne Fenton, and Grandson Thomas Fenton. Surviving are his wife Patricia Fenton of 53 years and children: Tammy (Russell) Quick, Deborah (Keith) Thayer, Mary (Jerry) Bronkhorst, Susan (Kevin) DeKoekkoek, Jack (Shauna) Fenton, Jeff (Amanda) Fenton, Grandchildren: Dustin (Jillian) Quick, Shelby (Sean) Peckham, Robert McKenzie, Anna and Clara Bronkhorst, Aren DeKoekkoek, Hunter, Pyper, and Avarie Fenton, Great-Grandchildren James and Olivia Peckham, many nieces and nephews and a special brother-inlaw James Sanford.
