OBITUARIES David UPLEGGER

AGE 66 – PLAINWELL, MI David passed away Friday, January 29, 2016 at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born June 25, 1949 to Ethel Wise. He graduated from Vicksburg High School. David worked most of his years at Plainwell Paper on the docks and driving semi. He enjoyed bowling, baseball, golfing and watching wrestling in his younger years, and watching sporting events with his family as his years grew on. David loved spending his time with his family who adored him. Surviving is his wife Janet which he married in June of 1980 and was happily married to for 35 years. Also surviving, his step-son John Clark; his daughter Theresa & Keith Butcher; grandchildren: Cameron Stratton, Samantha (Paulo) Spencer, Ross Courtney, Jacob Clark, Brandon Newman, Ezekiel Butcher, Dakota Clark, Ezra Butcher, Stephen Clark, Gavin Newman, Emma Newman. And his great grandchildren: Tori & Liam Spencer; along with nieces, nephews, family and friends. Preceded in death by his granddaughter Brookelyn Newman, his mother and several aunts and uncles. “PASSING THE TORCH” By Rev. Dan Minor

revdminor@att.net _____________________________________ “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also” (2 Timothy 1:5)

My mother, Eleanor (Minor) Tubergen, passed away recently at the age of 98 years + 8 months. She was the last of both the Blanchard and Minor generations, so her death was truly a passing of the torch to the next generations. To have a godly heritage is a true blessing. The phrase “God of our fathers” is common in the Scriptures (Acts 24:14). The Jews were proud to be called children of Abraham (Romans 4:1,2). “By faith Abraham … made his home in the Promised land … as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise” (Hebrews 11:9). Passing the torch of faith is illustrated in the testimony of Joshua. In his farewell discourse (then ninety years old) he said something like this:

“God has been faithful to us. Now we must be faithful to God. We must not serve foreign gods. So choose this day whom you will serve… but as for me and my house (family) we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:24). The same testimony was exemplified in the lives of Apostle Paul and young Timothy (2 Timothy 1:3, 5). I was only twenty- five years old when we went to our first appointment. I remember a man in that church who was up in years. He and his spouse had their only child later in life. He kept saying to me, “Don’t worry about us old folks, just concentrate on these younger ones; they are our future.” I think he was trying to say something like this, “Think about passing faith on to the next generation.”

The best gift we can give our children is Jesus Christ. The greatest legacy we can leave is the legacy of faith and love. Some things can never be repaid, but they can be passed on. I love the following words that appeared on a sympathy card pretty much sums it up:

“Tears cleanse. Memories comfort. Love lives on forever.”

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to remember that faith is our link to God and faith in Christ is the world’s only hope for the future. Amen
