AGE 72 - KALAMAZOO, MI Toni passed away Thursday, March 11, 2021 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born June 7, 1948 in Plainwell, the daughter of Darl and Mable (Warren) Horton. Toni was an avid quilter and enjoyed studying her bible. She had a giving heart and enjoyed volunteering at many senior centers while she lived in Kansas and Oklahoma. Toni liked helping the area youth and was the coordinator for Eastland Bowl and Airway Lanes in the 1980’s. She also founded Michigan All-Stars of Tomorrow. Surviving are her children, Steven (Stacey) London of Kalamazoo and Tifany (Jason) Morgan of Van Buren Township; grandchildren, Ashley, Breanna and Steven; great-grandson, Michael; sister, Wanda Valler along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. A private family visitation and service was held Monday, March 15, 2021 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Cremation follow. Burial of ashes took place at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego Township at a later time. Contributions in memory of Toni may be made to the Susan B. Komen Foundation. HOLY THURSDAY It is told that the painter Rembrandt painted a canvass entitled, “Storm on the Sea of Galilee.” A priceless masterpiece to be sure, the painter engages the observer to feel the spray of the waves and the movement of the boat.

There is, however, one striking detail. There are fourteen in the boat. That is, thirteen disciples plus Jesus. The eyes of the observer focus on one figure in particular. You can see it in his eyes. He is holding on for dear life! Who was that person? Answer: It was Rembrandt who had painted himself into the picture!

When it comes to observing our Lord’s Last Supper, Jesus invites us to take our place at the table and commune with Him; to feel the emotion; to ponder the meaning of it.

It was a pre-arranged and carefully planned meal. It was clearly love’s last appeal. The mood was solemn. The disciples did not know as yet the events which would follow. There was tension in the air. We can almost feel it. There were a variety of personalities represented at the table. They were quick-tempered, impulsive, argumentative, greedy, inquiring, impulsive, out-spoken, calculating, zealous and doubtful. It is ironic that Jesus humbles them by washing their feet! When Jesus identifies the betrayer (not by name) the conversation was silenced. Everyone at the table was forced to ask the question, “Lord, is it I?” If the object lesson was not clear enough, Jesus reinforced the message by breaking and blessing the bread saying, “This is my body broken for you.” Likewise with the cup, “This is my blood shed for you.” To this day, Jesus invites us to His table. We are invited to remember, reflect, re-examine, repent and renew our faith in the living Christ. We are invited to remember the things of most importance.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for being the new Paschal Lamb shed for our sins. In Your strong name. Amen.

Please do not put refuse out before 3:00 pm the Sunday prior!

Requirements for RUBBISH PICK-UP

1. All residents living on private roads must have the trash placed at the end of the road in a pile. 2. Refuse must be limited to what two men can lift. 3. Barrels with both ends cannot be picked up; land fills will not accept them. 4. All barrels, including barrels with trash in them, will be taken. Any barrel or container too heavy for two men to pick up will not be taken. 5. Trash piles should be located within easy reach from the road, not 20 to 30 feet, for the convenience of the trash haulers. 6. All objects must be bagged or put in containers that will be picked up. No loose materials will be picked up. 7. Containers must be left at curbside and they will not be returned. 8. Old appliances will be picked up if they can be lifted by two men. No refrigerators, freezers or air conditioners unless refrigerants are removed by a professional and tagged. Remember... Appliances can be recycled. 9. NO YARD WASTE! 10. NO BUILDING MATERIALS WILL BE PICKED UP 11. NO TIRES WILL BE PICKED UP 12. NO GARBAGE or container for food products will be picked up. 13. NO ROCKS, SAND, CONCRETE, RUBBLE OR DEAD ANIMALS will be picked up. 14. No motor oil or containers with liquids such as oil based and latex paint. Cans with dried paint are acceptable if lids are removed. 15. No call backs will be made if refuse is placed after the truck has serviced your house. 16. Complaints will be verified (field checked) by Township personnel and checked against driver’s log. 17. Any item not picked up because of the above reasons must be taken off the curbside and stored out of sight by noon of the day following each pick-up. 18. Recipient of the 2021 Partners in Dance Community Dance Advocacy Award Congratulations to Patti Herm, the recipient of this year’s Partners in Dance Community Dance Advocacy Award! The CDAA is given annually to honor and celebrate an individual who has demonstrated significant accomplishment in advancing and supporting dance in the greater Kalamazoo area through volunteerism, philanthropy, artistic achievement, teaching, and administrative leadership. We are proud to celebrate Patti and honored that she is part of our dance community! For over 35 years, Patti has inspired young dancers and served the Kalamazoo community as a choreographer and teacher. She is the Director of the Patti Herm School of Dance in Otsego, MI, and has taught dance for Portage Community Education, the YWCA, and Kalamazoo Parks and Recreation. She has choreographed for Kalamazoo Civic Theatre summer productions, the Kindleberger Festival in Parchment and for over 24 musical productions for Otsego High School. In 2000, Patti presented this area’s first full-length production of the “Nutcracker Ballet” and continues to share this classic holiday tradition with the community as a biennial production.

Malinko is looking for a best bud - could that be you? Look at that happy face! He is such a nice dog, a tad bit shy, but oh so sweet, loving, and silly. Malinko loves to roll in the grass and soak up the sun. He enjoys going on walks and would love to have a family that will take him out on sniffaris (think safari - but with his nose). Malinko was taught a bunch of cool tricks - sit, laydown, shake and roll over. He is such a great well mannered dog - what are you waiting for? Malinko gets along with other dogs, however he does prefer calmer dogs; please take this into consideration if you already have a dog in your home. A meet and greet will be conducted at the shelter to make sure any dogs already in the home are a good match for Malinko. He would really enjoy nice kids to play with him, and he is all about keeping you company while you relax, too.
