Verna passed away Monday, March 22, 2021 at her home in Plainwell. She was born September 8, 1935 in Lake Odessa, the daughter of John and Dorothy (Kyser) Brake. Verna was a Lake Odessa High School graduate and attended Huntington College in Indiana. She had owned and operated Plainwell Church and Office Supply with her husband. She also worked at the Lantern Christian Bookstore in Kalamazoo, Copies Plus in Plainwell with her son and was the secretary at First Baptist Church in Plainwell for many years. Verna enjoyed sewing, quilting, painting, taking nature walks and vacationing with her family. More than anything she loved being a devoted Gigi to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and adopted family. She was an avid soccer fan and loved attending and cheering for her grandchildren at all of their activities. Verna loved her family and looked forward to attending the Brake Family Pig-Fest every year. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Plainwell and was a Sunday School teacher and Awana leader. She was the first Sunday School teacher for each of her grandchildren. On August 22, 1954 at her family’s farm in Clarksville, she married Dewey Farris who passed away in 1987. Surviving are her children, Debbie (John) Coombs of Wayland, David Farris of Plainwell, Vicki (Garry) Snyder of Plainwell and Bob (Kelly) Farris of Plainwell; 12 grandchildren, Dustin, Kim (Andy), Josh (Lacy), Kristen (Brian), Jason, Kayla (Sallu), Kyle (Samantha), Katie (Jon), Alyssa (Andrew), Jenna (Joey), Derek and Jacob (Kenedie); 7 great-grandchildren, Oakley, Natalie, Madi, Paisley, Abi, Ryder, Mason and Sawyer; siblings, Ruth Stadel and Jack (Jan) Brake along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; granddaughter, Stephanie and brother, Robert Brake. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at Hillside Cemetery. A celebration of Verna’s life will be held at a later time. Kay passed away Sunday, March 21, 2021 at her home in Plainwell. She was born December 24, 1938 in Henry, South Dakota, the daughter of Fred and Genevieve (Cosgrove) Davis. Kay was a 1956 Plainwell High School graduate and attended Kalamazoo Practical Nurse Center where she received her LPN license. On September 14, 1957 at the Plainwell United Methodist Church, she married Ronald Jenkins, her childhood friend who walked her to her first day of Kindergarten. She worked at Pipp Hospital and the “Clinic” in Plainwell until retirement. After retiring, she continued to work at various jobs in Kalamazoo, but Kay’s real work was for the Lord. She had a steadfast faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and it was woven into everything she did. By the grace of God, she was able to maintain strong relationships with neighbors, friends and family. As a mom, she always had room on the calendar to watch grandkids or go to one of their events. She absolutely loved reading, singing, listening to music and attending musical theater and concerts. She also loved her dolls, one of which she was holding on her last day. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Donna Lou Davis and Jeanine Boulter-Lindeman. Kay will be lovingly remembered by her husband Ron Jenkins; children, Jeffrey (Julia) Jenkins, Dawn (Brian) Roblyer, and Susan (Nathan) Steffen; 15 grandchildren, 13 greatgrandchildren; siblings, Fred Davis, Don (Donna) Davis, and Joanne Davis along with many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held March 25, 2021 Pastor George Osborn officiated. Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. Richard passed away 03/14/2021 at home. Richard was born 03/21/34 to Lewis and Annie Brumm. He married high school sweetheart Dorothy Jean Schultz on 12/13/1952 in Sandusky, Michigan. They were married for 67 years. Within a year after marriage, they had the birth of daughter Sherry, and 7 years later their son Rick. Richard worked in construction moving dirt for his entire work career. He was a member of the Operation Engineers local 324 for 67 years. His career included construction on many of the Michigan interstate systems. He worked on sections of I-94, many miles of US-131 near Whitehall, Rothberry, and Hart. He also worked on other projects including the Ludington Pump Storage Project, Grand Rapids airport, Lake Doster Golf course, Moors Golf course, and many of the building sites for the plants in the Battle Creek Industrial Park such as Stanley and Nippon Denso. He worked for some of the larger construction contractors in the state such as Edison, Canonie, Shinville, Millbocker, Hoffman Bros and more. After retiring in his early 60s, Richard started restoration projects at home for himself and others. He restored a 1949 Pontiac, 1956 Ford, and 1947 John Deere for himself. Projects for others would include a few cars and trucks, and even an antique wood parlor stove and a lawn jockey. During the winter months, Richard and Dorothy started traveling. First with a pickup and camper, and eventually a motorhome they covered most of the midwestern and southern states and then started wintering in Yuma, AZ with friends. Many hours were spent trying to get the best senior deals at the buffets, and ice cream shops while they were being snow birds in Yuma with the friends. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Annie, brothers Evans, and Raymond, sister Shirley and his wife Dorothy. He has 2 children Sherry Buck of Pentwater, and Rick (Terri) Brumm of Otsego. Granddaughters Stacey (Brent) Daggett, Lisa (Jason) Lloyd, grandsons Mathew (Amanda) Brumm, and Christopher Brumm, great grandchildren Trevor Castonia, Zoey Brumm, Ella Lloyd, Abby Brumm, and Levi Brumm. Richard’s family work ethics have been passed down to his children and grandchildren to never give in and work until the job is completed to the best of your ability. And, if you don’t succeed the first time try again. He led a full life-seen a lot and done plenty. After cremation, his ashes will be mixed with his wife’s and buried at the Mountain Home cemetery in Otsego. Burial will be at a later date with family.

Bob passed away Friday, March 19, 2021 at his home in Allegan. He was born December 25, 1925 in Alamo Township, the son of Lyle and Doris (Kisinger) Wait. Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. For several years he worked as a machine operator at Eaton Corporation until his retirement in 1979. In his free time Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and bowling. He was a member of the Otsego Elks Lodge and Otsego VFW Post #3030. On July 26, 1947 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Allegan he married Josephine Brokus who survives. Also surviving are his children, Susan (Jan) Anderson, Michael (Holly) Wait, James (Terri) Wait and Mary (Randy) Vliek; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Barbara Marie; grandson, Matthew Vliek and siblings, Gerald and Richard Wait. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 24. Rev. Fr. Simon Manjooran officiated. Burial followed at St. Margaret Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors by VFW Post #3030. Contributions in memory of Bob may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice. Jerry passed away Friday, March 19, 2021 at his home in Otsego. He was born April 5, 1927 in Monterey Township, the son of William and Susan (Manderfield) Garlock. Jerry proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked at Mac Sim Bar Paper Mill for many years. Jerry was a member of the Otsego Moose Lodge, Otsego VFW Post #3030 and the Allegan Eagles. On March 10, 1945 in Allegan, he married Betty Jean Lickley who passed away in 1996. Surviving are his children, Sandra Tripp of Florida and Robert Jr. (Ann) Garlock of South Carolina; 5 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and 3 great-greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and siblings, Hollis, Jim and Rose. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. AGE 84 - PLAINWELL, MI Gale passed away Monday, March 22, 2021 at Alamo Nursing Home. He was born December 15, 1936, in Kalamazoo, the son of Glen and Marjorie (Gay) Emmons. For many years he worked at North America Aluminum in Parchment and had owned and operated Gales Bike Shop in Plainwell. In his spare time Gale enjoyed fishing, camping and loved taking trips up north. On November 21, 1997 he married Patricia Sutherland who survives. Also surviving are his children, Jeffery (Deborah) Emmons of Kalamazoo, Sarah Lindeman of Plainwell, Wendy (Rich) Hardey of Gobles, Jason (Debbie) Emmons of Vicksburg, Christine (Jeff) Noble of Kalamazoo, Larry Fox of Plainwell and James (Kimberly) Fox of Bloomingdale; 19 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; siblings, Gary, Glenora, Randy, Will and Margie along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Nancy; son, Wesley and siblings, Glenna, Gilbert and Gaylord “Butch”. A private family funeral service took place March 26, 2021. Larry loved cars especially Ford mustangs. He was a gold member at the Indianapolis Lucas Oil Speedway and a NHRA drag racing member. He liked listening to music and had a large vinyl record collection. Bobby enjoyed hunting, fishing, picking music and playing with his band, grilling and riding his motorcycle. He was a loving father and Godfather, a patriarch for his family and loved ones. Born 7/9/79 Went to be with the Lord 3/24/07 Fourteen Years. It's been a very long yet short time; the time has been mostly sad. It's hard even now to say that you have been in the glory of heaven for fourteen years. The only thing that can cover the sadness is knowing that you are in the glory of heaven. You are there not because of anything that your Mother or I ever did; it's only because of what you did all on your own. You confessed your life to the Lord Jesus Christ and asked for forgiveness. As it says (Acts 4:12) there is no other salvation nor any other name where by we may be saved. You and I and everyone else must answer the same question that the Eunuch answered to Philip, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God". (Acts 8:32) Just like you we must all confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus, and with our heart believe that God raised him from the dead. (Romans 10:9-11)

Because you came to that day in your life, and cried out to the Lord and said "I believe", even now that you are dead, you are more alive than ever. I believe that I and all that truly believe will be there soon. If you are reading this and you can't say without any doubt that you would spend eternity in heaven, don't play games with God. Humble yourself before the Lord, just as the Philippian jailer and the Eunuch did, and ask what must I do to be saved? The answer will always be the same, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shall be saved. You are too much LOVED by God to let the devil have your Soul.

“LOVE’S SACRIFICE”

GOOD FRIDAY Death by crucifixion was among the cruelest forms of execution in the ancient Roman world. It was a slow, brutal and agonizing death. It was also public humiliation. In the words of the prophet Isaiah, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). It is ironic that Jesus, who was a friend of sinners, died between two criminals for the sins of the world. It was truly love’s sacrifice and the fulfillment of Jesus words, “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for His friends” (John 15:13).

We call it “Good Friday” (literally “God’s Friday”) not because He suffered but because of why He suffered. It was good only because through His death, Jesus opened the way for our salvation.

There are at least three ways of viewing Good Friday.

HISTORICALLY The death of Christ was a one-time historic event which can never be repeated (I Peter 3:18). While on the cross, Jesus began to quote Psalm 22 which describes the Good Shepherd giving His life for His sheep. History is divided into BC (before Christ) and AD (anno Domini, in the year of the Lord). Thus, the death of Christ is a historical fact.

HUMBLY The fact that Jesus died such a brutal death should humble us. In Philippians 2:8 we read, “He humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross!” The bottom line is He died for me. HOPEFULLY

I have a childhood memory of watching a vivid portrayal of the trial, crucifixion and resurrection of Christ on television. When it came to His crucifixion, I remember covering my eyes with my hands. I could not bear to watch it. About that time my father entered the room and said, “Keep watching; it gets better!”

Sure enough! Calvary is not the end of the story! Just as spring follows winter and morning follows night, death is followed by resurrection. As Tony Campolo, a noted American sociologist and pastor, famously stated it, “It’s Friday, But Sunday’s Coming!”

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to be children of the promise and of hope. In Your strong name. Amen.
