On behalf of the Christian Neighbors board, staff & volunteers we would like to thank our wonderful community for all of your support. I always say what a blessing it is to live and have raised a family in a community that cares about each other. In my job at Christian Neighbors, I see that on a weekly basis. We are so blessed when we put food needs out on Facebook that you respond! Sometimes we see a shelf full of food and think, WOW, we have a lot. But imagine at least 250 jars of peanut butter, jelly, juice and at least 1200 cans of vegetables and soups, etc. going out each month. We are also blessed with so many volunteers, prayers and encouragement. We are amazed at the participants and dollars raised each year at our May “Reflection of Hope Dinner Auction”. At least 84% of our resources comes from our community! That speaks volumes to your trust in our mission and work. We are also grateful to the Allegan Community Foundation, The Mignon Sherwood Delano Foundation, Perrigo Foundation and United Way for their financial support. We diligently try to be good stewards with our donated dollars. For every dollar we spend at least 90 cents of it goes to our programming. “PREFACE TO THE PASSION”

From the earliest of times, Christians have observed a 40 day period of spiritual preparation leading up to our observance of the suffering, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is called the season of Lent. The word Lent comes from the old English word “lencten” which refers to the time when the days lengthen.

Thus, this period might be called “Preface to the Passion.” In the Bible, whenever God wanted to prepare His people for some great spiritual event, it took 40 days (Examples: Noah and the Ark, Moses on Mount Sinai and Jesus fasting in the wilderness). Hence 40 days.

It is a time of self-examination in light of Jesus’ suffering and death for our redemption. Some of the themes of this season include penitence (sorrow for our sins), repentance (“to move toward God) confession, prayer, fasting, forgiveness, self-denial and service to others in Christ’s name.

Traditionally, people think of Lent as a time for giving up something (like candy, desserts, soft drinks, etc.). It has been suggested that Lent might also be a time for giving up destructive emotions in our lives such as envy, jealousy, resentment, self-pity or negative thinking.

However one might observe Lent, the important thing is experiencing closeness to God. During the next few weeks leading up to Easter, I will be writing a series of articles called “Glimpses of Grace.” We will examine how the grace of God worked in the lives of some of the original disciples and what we can learn from their examples.

One can only imagine what was going on in their minds, especially when they learned His death would be a reality for them. We will see how Christ turned their weaknesses into strengths and how God used them to literally change the course of history.

Eventually (Post Easter) we will observe how the narrative shifts dramatically and how we can experience the living Christ in our lives.

As we prepare for the beginning of Lent (Ash Wednesday, March 6), let us begin with the prayer that God will help us to see ourselves as God sees us … as persons of potential, promise and hope.

AGE 92 - KALAMAZOO, MI

Evelyn died peacefully on February 25th, 2019 at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence Facility after battling lung cancer at the age of 92. She was born in Muskegon, Michigan on August 2nd, 1926, the daughter of Marlyn F. & Ruther (Sherman) Jenkins. Evelyn was a graduate of Muskegon Heights High School in 1944 and from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics, then returned to earn her Teaching Certification. Evelyn was married to the love of her life, Grant G. Hogarth on August 7th, 1948 at Temple Methodist Church in Muskegon. She proceeds her husband in death, for Grant passed away in 2009. She is survived by her children, Grant Hogarth Jr. of Sterling, CO, Rand Hogarth of Aurora, CO, and Gale E. Doster & husband Mark Doster of Plainwell, MI and her grandchildren, Grant III (Suzanne) and William Hogarth of Sterling, CO, Katelyn, Madelyn, and Jake Hogarth of Aurora, CO, Melissa Wyatt (Derrick), Jennifer and Matthew (Michelle) Doster of Plainwell, MI, along with 3 great grandchildren, Jaxson and Jayden Guerrant and Laurel Hogarth. Sister: Marilyn (Robert) McCarthy of Muskegon, MI along with 19 nieces and nephews. Evelyn was engaged as a home maker and Public School elementary grade teacher for the Comstock, Kalamazoo and Plainwell Schools for 27 years. Evelyn enjoyed her family, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and friends. She took special joy and interest in gardening, flowers, sewing, traveling and downhill skiing with her husband. She was active in Leisure Time Condo Assoc. and headed the flower committee for a number of years. She was an active member of the Second Reformed Church in Kalamazoo, previously a member of the First United Methodist Church in Plainwell, MI where she resided for 17 years. She also served as a direct response worker for the Kalamazoo Deacons Conference for 10 years. Cremation has taken place at her request. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 8, 2019 at the Betzler Life Story Funeral Home, Kalamazoo A Memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, March 9, at the Second Reformed Church at 2323 Stadium Drive. Burial will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek. Memorials may be made to your choice or Planned Parenthood. Messages of condolence may be posted at www.BetzlerFuneralHome.com

Gary passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born October 20, 1960 in Allegan, the son of Cecil and Wilma (VanDerMeer) Dalrymple. Gary had been a maintenance worker at several area businesses until 2012. In his spare time he enjoyed watching movies, playing cards and spending time with his son and granddaughter. Gary had attended At the Master’s Feet Discipleship Ministry. Surviving are his son, Chris Dalrymple; granddaughter, Dakota Dalrymple and his nieces and nephew, Lori (Matthew) Greenman, Lisa (George) Mead and Russell (Tammy) Quick. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, William Dalrymple, Cecil Dalrymple and Janet Quick. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 11am at At the Master’s Feet Discipleship Ministry with Pastor Ray Brown officiating. Burial of ashes will take place at Hicks Cemetery at a later time. Contributions in memory of Gary may be made to Wings Home of Allegan.
