Roads are important for getting us where we want to go. In the figurative sense, there are different kinds of roads such as the road to success, the road to recovery and the “Road to the Final Four.” The renowned poet, Robert Frost spoke of “The Road Not Taken” meaning, I suppose, the road of decision. The most important road in history was the road Jesus walked which led to a cross upon which He died for our sins. It was a deliberate, voluntary, willful decision Luke talks about when “he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem” (Luke 9:51 K.J.V.) The issue is whether anyone cares to remember. The season of Lent, on the Christian calendar, comes around every year to remind us to remember. The word Lent comes from a Latin word meaning “to lengthen” which refers to the time during spring when the days lengthen. The journey of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and leads to the celebration of our Lord’s resurrection (Easter). It is a forty day period (not including Sundays) which commemorates Jesus’ forty days in the wilderness preparing Him for His earthly ministry (Matthew 4:1-11). The first recorded reference to Lent as 40 days was at the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D. The key words for this Holy season: Remember, Repent and Renew. When we are willing to live with an awareness of His presence, it can be said we are traveling on a road called remember. Prayer: Dear Lord, may we never forget the terrible price you paid for our redemption. Amen.

How much is a bag of dirt worth? In February 2015, Nancy Carlson, from Inverness, IL, purchased one which was auctioned off by the US Marshall Service for $995. This distinctive dirt was from the moon! The 11.5 inches of soil was retrieved by Apollo 11 in 1969, in a bag marked “lunar sample return”. After receiving it, Nancy sent the bag to the Johnson Space Center for authentication. While doing so, NASA discovered its historic value. The bag contained the first samples from the very first manned lunar mission. NASA concluded that it was “a rare artifact, if not a national treasure”, and refused to return it. Nancy took the space agency to court to get her dirt back. The government acted differently once they realized the bag’s value. Likewise, when we grasp our tremendous personal value, we can find motivation to live differently. We are all created in the image of God. Genesis 1:27 reads, “…God created humankind in His own image”. We possess incredible value! Our spiritual identity can transform our attitude about ourselves as well as our actions towards others. We have great self-worth! Colossians 3:510 explains that believers in Christ are “being renewed” in the image of our Creator. This renewal should motivate us to set aside sexual immorality, greed, anger, rage, malice, slander, filthy language, and dishonesty. When we truly know our worth, we act differently. Last week, a federal judge ordered NASA to return the lunar soil bag to Nancy, since she bought it fairly at a government auction. Jesus Christ has purchased and redeemed us through His atoning work of forgiveness. We belong to Christ. We are image bearers! Let’s recognize our value, and demonstrate it by living as those created in the image of God.

AGE 86 - MARTIN, MI

Mary went to be with her Savior and join her heavenly family on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at the Wings Home in Allegan. She was born June 17, 1930 in Watson Township the daughter of George and Ethel Irene (Lukins) Shipley. For many years Mary owned and operated a Beauty Shop out of her home in Otsego Township. Later she and her first husband owned and operated Spring Water Campground in Shelbyville where she enjoyed cooking large pots of food for everyone there. Mary loved playing bingo, playing the piano, singing, going out to eat, teaching Sunday school at the First Baptist Church of Otsego and attending church services. Most of all she loved spending time with her family and enjoyed being involved with her grandchildren, Necole (Jason) Wesaw, Nathan (Chandra) Morehouse, Ryan Parrish and Kent McLaughlin and 4 great-grandchildren who dearly loved her. On July 4, 1990 in Las Vegas she married Patrick McLaughlin who survives. Also surviving are her children, Kelley (Rick) DePauw of Kalamazoo and Lisa McBride of FL; step-sons, William (Kris) McLaughlin of Allegan and Robert McLaughlin of Martin; her sister, Margaret Guider of Martin. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, William Ayers and by her siblings, Cliff, Robert, Esther, Thelma and Helen. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Mary’s family starting at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego until the time of the Memorial Service at 12:00 P.M. with Pastor Tony Shumaker officiating. Burial will take place at Hicks Cemetery, Watson Township at a later time. Contributions in memory of Mary may be made to the Wings Home of Allegan. Bagley was appointed as Kalamazoo District Superintendent in June 2016.

John Joseph WEARNE AGE 70 - OTSEGO, MI

John passed away suddenly on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 in Allegan. He was born in Allegan on February 2, 1947 to the late Eugene and Mildred “Peggy” E. (Beagle) Wearne. He graduated from Allegan High School in 1965. John was raised on the farm and considered himself to be a farm boy. He resided in Allegan, Plainwell, Wayland and Otsego. John was employed as a heavy equipment operator for several years, which led him to work on the Alaskan Pipeline, something he had several good memories from. He was owner and operator of JW Excavating and ended his working career as a semi-truck driver. John would seek opportunities to gain knowledge. He was strong-willed, giving, stubborn, and loved jokes, laughter and cards. John had COPD the last several years but enjoyed going out and spending time with family and his grandsons. He and his beloved friend Donna, looked forward to seeing the squirrels (each had a name) and birds that they fed on a daily basis. John is survived by: his companion Donna Pion of Otsego; two daughters, Casondra and Ivan Schmalfeldt of Paw Paw and Sara and Paul Mitchell and their sons, Cruz and Carver of Barryton; three siblings, Chuck (Kathy) Wearne and Tom Wearne both of Allegan, MI and Linda (Kim) Burgel of Bend, OR; and many extended family and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Margaret Arcaina in 2015. AGE 39 - PLAINWELL, MI Joshua passed away on February 26, 2017. He was born to Robert Stephens of Allegan and Patricia (Vote) Rybicki (Ralph) of Delton on August 3, 1977. He graduated from Martin High School in 1996. On March 23, 2002 he married Loraine (Owen). They raised three children Carissa Stephens, Joshua Cowels and Chad Cowels. Joshua received his Associate degree from KVCC in 2010 and his Bachelor Degree in Biological Science from Western Michigan University in 2014. Josh was employed at Pharm Optima in Portage as a research assistant. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Cheryl Littlejohn, stepmother Jan (Dunham) Stephens, grandparents Jack Vote, Al and Doris Stephens. Surviving family includes grandparents, Richard and Nancy Montgomery, and Beth Vote as well as many uncles, aunts, cousins and other family members. Celebration of Joshua's life will be at the Otsego VFW on Sunday, March 19th from 3-7pm.
