Michael Charles SUMMERVILLE

Jim passed away Monday, March 1, 2021 at his home in Alamo Township. He was born March 31, 1928 in Kalamazoo, the son of James and Carolyn (Snell) Deneau. Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy as a fireman 1st class during World War II. He worked as a journeyman press operator at Kalamazoo Label Company and had owned and operated Kalamazoo Septic until his retirement in 2009.

In his free time Jim enjoyed camping, fishing, taking road trips and hanging with his grandchildren. Jim was a member of the Otsego VFW Post #3030, Otsego Elks Lodge and the Plains County Club in Plains, Georgia. On July 5, 1949 in Angola, Indiana he married Burtie Rice who passed away in 2011. Surviving are his sons, Tom (Jackie) Deneau and Jim (Ellyn) Deneau; grandchildren, Alex (Suzannah) Deneau, Abby (Ben Rhodes) Deneau, Mary (Scott) Nykamp, Thomas Deneau, Kayla Deneau, Jimmy Deneau, Sam Deneau and David (Veronica) Deneau; several great-grandchildren; brother, Brad (Paula) Deneau along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, David; his in-laws and several cousins. Cremation took place. A private family memorial service will take place at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, March 6, 2021 at the Otsego United Methodist Church with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Burial of ashes will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Military honors by VFW Post #3030. In accordance with covid -19 guidelines a limit of 25 people at a time will be allowed and masks and social distancing will be required. For those unable to attend the memorial service a live stream will be available on the Otsego Methodist Church’s website or Facebook Live. Contributions in memory of Jim may be made to Kalamazoo County Council on Aging, Otsego United Methodist Church or to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.

Michael passed away peacefully at Vicinia Gardens surrounded by many people who loved him. Everybody who knew Mike enjoyed his unlimited funny stories and his great contagious laugh. He was an avid hunter who also loved fishing, gardening, and hockey. As a result, he had a circle of sport enthusiast friends and shared many adventures with them over the years. Mike was born on June 3, 1943 in Kalamazoo. After high school he completed four years of service in the Navy and then went to work for the railroad (Grand Trunk, Conrail, and Amtrak) where he remained for 38 years. Mike also had a sobriety record that numbered 33 years.

In 1981, he married Colleen Hatfield and they became a blended family of six. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn (Fitzgerald), his parents, Milo and Virginia (Molenaar), and a sister, Janet Sorrentino. He is survived by his wife, Colleen; daughters, Cheryl (Dale) Warren, Julie Hatfield Fillmore; sons Sean Summerville and Robert (Kim) Hatfield; 9 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren; sister, Patty (David) Lamb; brother, Steve Summerville; as well as several nieces and nephews. He has been cremated and there will be a celebration of life when the weather is appropriate. The family would like to thank the kind, caring and compassionate staff who had become part of his “family” at Vicinia Gardens for the care they gave Mike during the past eight months. Memorial Contributions may be made to Kindred Hospice, c/o the funeral home.

Don proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. For 37 years he worked at Parker Hannifin until his retirement in 2002. Don loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping and canoeing in Baldwin and Minnesota boundary waters with his family. He liked skiing, bowling and was happiest when playing golf. He was a skilled woodworker and had made many beautiful pieces for his family. Surviving are his daughters, Terri-Lynne Reeber, Julie (Dan) Andrus, Lora (Lyle) Whisler, Stephanie (Scott) Richardson and Michelle (Christopher) Boulter; grandchildren, Brian (Michelle) Johnson, Kenneth Johnson, Alex (Amelia Castaneda) Johnson, Autumn (Gregory) Mckeown, Karrah Richardson, Brennan Richardson and Faith, Sydney, Piper and Payne Boulter; 10 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step-greatgrandchildren and his sister, Peggy Ford. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Neal Donald Reeber and 3 sisters. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A private family burial of ashes will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. In her free time she enjoyed crafting, knitting, crocheting and spending time with her family and many friends at Baraga Manor. She was a member of Friendship Wesleyan Church in Plainwell.

Surviving are her children, Wayne Gilger of Marshall, Diane (Jim) Collins of Otsego and Bobbie (Jim) Forge of Midland; grandchildren, Dean, April, Alan, Sara, Tim and Anita; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; her siblings, Henry Betz of Colorado and Carl Betz of Comstock along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Friends may visit with Jean’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Monday, March 8, 2021 at the Friendship Wesleyan Church in Plainwell until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 P.M., with Pastor Kevin Smith officiating. “Love’s Confidence”

“Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. ‘By what authority are you doing these things?’ they asked. ‘And who gave you this authority’” (Matthew 21:23)

The story of our Lord’s last week on earth continues with the questioning of Jesus’ authority.

By His authority Jesus: taught the truth (Matthew 7:28,29); cast out demons (Mark 1:27); healed the sick (Matthew 8:14,14); stilled the storm (Matthew 8:27); forgave sins (Matthew 9:6); executed judgment (John 5:27); gave eternal life (John l7:2); raised the dead (John 11:43.44); and gave the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18).

Yet the enemies of Christ dared to question His authority! Three other groups tried to trick Him in His speech including paying taxes to Caesar, marriage at the resurrection and the Greatest Commandment (Matthew 22).

In every encounter they learned they were no match for Jesus and were left amazed and speechless.

Their plan was to prove Him to be a false prophet which would have successfully squelched His popular following. Their scheme to discredit Him failed miserably! They would have to resort to other ways of destroying Him.

We stand amazed at His confidence. Let us consider what His confidence was based upon.

1. He Knew Who He Was.

From the time He was only twelve years old (Luke 2:49), Jesus never lost sight of His personal identity.

He knew He had a special relationship with the Father and talked about it often. It would become one of the reasons His enemies plotted to kill Him (John l9:7).

Takeaway: It is important to know who we are and Whose we are.

2. He Knew Why He was Here.

Jesus said, “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost” (Luke l9:10). He demonstrated that truth by dying on a cross for our sins.

William Barclay wrote, “The two most important days in your life are the day you’re born, and the day you find out why you were born.”

Takeaway: Know your purpose.

3. He knew Who was with Him.

Jesus lived with a conscious awareness of the presence of God in His life. One of the most comforting words of Jesus are “… and lo, I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20).

Lord Alfred Tennyson wrote, God is “Closer than breathing, and nearer than hands and feet.”

Takeaway: We can claim the promise of His presence.
