John 21:16

He was a born leader. He, along with James and John, were members of Jesus’ inner circle of friends.

He was known for being quick-tempered, impulsive, outspoken, outgoing and proactive. He was the spokesman of the group. Peter was his name. He was a Galilean fisherman (Mark 1:16-17), married (I Corinthians 9:5) and lived in Capernaum. While he is remembered for denying His Lord (Mark 14:66-72), there were several game-changing moments in his life.

• His introduction to Jesus and the great promise Jesus saw in him (John 1:42, Matthew 16:18).

• His declaration of faith “You are the Christ, son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16).

• His restoration of faith and commission “Feed my sheep” (John 21:15-17).

• His sermon on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1441).

The grace of God has been defined as undeserved favor. It is God’s gracious mercy extended to us in spite of our sins. It is strength for daily living.

Glimpses of grace in the life of Peter: • God gives grace to the humble (Luke 5:8; II Peter l: 9).

• God does not call perfect disciples, only willing ones (Luke 5:l0; 22:54-62).

• Forgiveness is always an option (I John l: 9).

• God can turn negative behaviors into positive outcomes (John 21:15-17).

• God’s church is built upon rock-like faith and nothing can destroy God’s church (Matthew 16:17, 18).

• Failure, in God’s eyes, is never final. The rock that crumbled was being reformed and reshaped for God.

Prayer: Dear Lord, give us grace to remember even when we fail, You never fail us. Sometimes a glimpse of Your grace is all we need to be made whole again.

Shirley went to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, March 4, 2019 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Schanz was born August 1, 1939 in Gobles, Michigan, the daughter of the late Forrest and Frieda (Chandler) Laughlin.

On August 15, 1959, Shirley married Marion R. Schanz and the two shared a love for the Lord and for the family they created with their three children. In 1975, Shirley and Marion became active members of the Merson Church and shared their faith with all those around them. She enjoyed playing the dulcimer and was very talented at crocheting. She was also very passionate about the Otsego Christian Academy and donated time and resources to help it succeed at instructing the young. Shirley was truly committed to raising her family and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating wonderful memories to cherish. She leaves behind her three children, Richard and Angela Schanz, Timothy Schanz and Robin Schanz; four grandchildren, Jason Schanz, Christine and Christopher DeKryger, Derek and Trish Schanz, Khrystie and Brock Sheffer; seven great-grandchildren, Kenny, Khandice, Khali, Billie Jo, Millie, Bentley and Landon; six siblings, Forrest “Sonny” and Mary Laughlin, Louise Laughlin, Jerry and Glo Laughlin, Patsy Shyer, Mary Kay and Ron Wiessner, and Victor Laughlin; along with many nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Marion and two siblings, Anna Rose Smith and Loretta Laughlin. Friends may meet with the family at Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel on Friday, March 8, 2019 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at Merson Church on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 4:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made to the Otsego Christian Academy (247 E. Allegan Street, Otsego, MI 49078). Burial will take place in Mallory Cemetery, Trowbridge Township.

Christina passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at her home in Otsego. She was born on June 23, 1974 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Michael Thompson and Connie Marshbank. Christina had been a dental assistant most recently for Dr. Halverson in Plainwell. She enjoyed crafting, baking, cake decorating and cooking. Christina loved Christmas, her cats and dogs and spending time with her friends and family. On October 4, 2002 in Allegan she married Jason Ellinger who survives. Also surviving are her children, Kalie Ellinger and Alexis (Shane Milbocker) Ellinger both of Otsego; mother, Connie Luckey of Grand Junction; father, Michael (Jeannie) Thompson of Ohio; siblings, Patricia Thompson of Allegan, Randy Simpson of Plainwell, Peggy Huffman and Nicole (Victor) Imperi both of Kentucky and Claire Thompson of California along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandparents. Friends may visit with Christina’s family from 2-4 P.M., Sunday, March 10, 2019 at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where a funeral service will take place at 11:00 A.M., Monday, March 11, 2019 with Celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Christina may be made to the Wings Home of Allegan.

Bonnie J. BELL

AGE 74 - OTSEGO, MI Bonnie passed away Thursday, February 28, 2019 at IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born April 12, 1944 in Plainwell, the daughter of Claude and Dorothy (McDonald) Knight.

Bonnie had worked at McPherson Plastics for many years. In her free time she enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, geocaching and flower gardening. On May 10, 1963 she married William Bell who passed away in 2005. Surviving are her children, Chris (Bill) Meines of Bedford, Indiana and Todd (Richard Howard) Bell of West Olive; grandchildren, Jacob (Alison) Meines, Joshua (Mikayla) Meines, Karisa (Christian) Wykoff, Cameron, Haley, MaKenna and Trevyn Bell; siblings, Sally Staley, Barb (Bernie) Livingston, Daryl (Kathy) Knight, Bruce Knight, Val (Mike Dalrymple) Vandervort, Brenda Kling and Wendy (Russ) Tompkins; brother-in-law, Don Sparks along with many nieces and nephews and special friend, Terri Macak. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; sisters, Sandy Sparks and Sharon Kellogg; sister-in-law, Deb Knight; brothersin-law, Dean Staley and Del Kellogg and mother and father-in-law, Kember and Martha Bell. Peter ZWART

AGE 49 - OTSEGO, MI On Tuesday, February 26, 2019, Peter Zwart passed away suddenly at the age of 49. Peter was born on August 8, 1969 in Plainwell, MI to Peter and Virginia (Samuals) Zwart. He graduated from Plainwell High School in 1987. He was the proud father of two beautiful daughters, Margaret and Hannah. If one thing could sum up Pete it was his passion for racing. From a very young age you could find Pete at the race track. He talked about and lived for racing. He had built many cars over his lifetime and more recently had helped both of his daughters, Maggie and Hannah, join him in his passion by putting them behind the wheel of their own race cars at Kalamazoo Speedway, which he considered his second home. The only thing that surpassed his love of the racetrack was the love he had for his two daughters. Pete was a loving and devoted father to Maggie and Hannah and he took great pride in watching them race. Hannah described her father as "a real cool cat". Pete also enjoyed hunting in his spare time. Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Virginia Zwart. He is survived by his daughters Margaret Zwart (fiance Mark Campbell) and Hannah Zwart, his sister Joyce (James) Harnish, his brother William (Varyl) Zwart, a special niece, Stephanie Watkins, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is also survived by his wife, Dena (Buys) Zwart and his in-laws Ed and Sharon Buys. A Celebration of Life will be held on March 9, 2019 at the Martin United Methodist Church located at 969 E. Allegan St. in Martin, MI. Visitation will begin at 10:00am followed by a service at 11:00am. A short luncheon will follow. Contributions in memory of Peter can be made to the Martin United Methodist Church or to a charity of your choice.
