Sandra “Sandy” Deane NYBERG

Laury passed away on April 10, 2020. Laury was born on January 21, 1957 in Hollywood, California. Her husband of 45 years, Harry passed away in 2019. Laury’s family includes her children: Tracey (Ross) Robrahn, Stacey (Shawn Auderer) Betke, Brandy Moran and Andrew Betke; 9 grandchildren: Courtney, Suzey, Deven, Allissa, Isaak, Ashton, Mason, Ryley and Carter; 7 great grandchildren and her beloved dog B.B.; her sister Laurie Birkhofer as well as several other siblings, their spouses, extended family and beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her father Robert D. Mechura, her brother Rich and her inlaws Bernard and Beverly Betke. Laury was part of Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Girl Scouts. She ran a home daycare and loved to be a part of children’s lives. She enjoyed crafts and painting. She loved to travel spending her last 5 years traveling with her beloved husband in their motor home. She was a great friend and will be dearly missed by her many friends and all of the children whose lives she touched as well as the RV community. Following her wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service is being planned for a later date. Those who wish may make contributions to DC Strong. Sandy peacefully passed away at home surrounded by her family on April 9, 2020 at the age of 80. Sandy was born December 20, 1939 to Clifford and Edith (Pyle) Mills. She will be remembered for her spunky personality and how deeply she cared for her loved ones. Sandy was known as a hardworking woman who lived her life to the fullest and knew how to have fun. Whether it was being up north, cooking and hosting holiday parties, traveling, attending grandchildren’s sporting events, keeping up on yardwork and housework, working on puzzles, playing dominos or occasionally a margarita in the evening, Sandy truly knew how to enjoy life. She especially treasured her time she spent with her grandson Jackson. Sandy began dating her husband Wendall “Butch” Nyberg in 1975, two years later on July 1st 1977, they married. Each bringing four children into their loving marriage. Sandy was a very fair and loving mother who always made sure that her family was well provided for and knew that she loved them dearly. She is survived by all of her children; Gary (Trish) Nyberg, Vicky (Gordon) Fillingim, Bob (Dawn) Nyberg, Greg (Tami) Burd, John (Patty) Nyberg, Rhonda (Bill) Klussmann, Kevin (Cheryl) Nyberg and Lawrence (Jolene) Burd. Her sister Reva (Don) Aukerman; two sister in laws Patsy Nyberg and Marilyn Campbell, as well as her 18 grandchildren and 17 great grand children. She is preceded in death by both of her parents, her husband Butch, two brother in laws Larry Nyberg and Richard Campbell and her granddaughter Abbey Nyberg. The family gives a special thank you to the employees at Wings of Hope for all the love and compassion that they showed their mother. Kris Leenhouts-Gamet passed away Sunday, April 12, 2020 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. She was born July 2, 1949 in Detroit, MI to Marian Deisler. In November of 1949 she was adopted by Harold and Alice (Mohan) Leenhouts and raised in Battle Creek. She was a 1967 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School. Surviving are her sons, Pete (Kathy) Gamet of Deford, John (Michael) Gamet of Three Rivers and Andrew (Tracy) Gamet of Otsego; three brothers, Mike (Linda) Leenhouts of Battle Creek, Andrew (Becky) Hildebrant of Owosso and John Jackson of Supula, OK; nine grandchildren, Amber, Danielle, Krystal, Brittany, Joshua, Jacob, Courtney, AJ and Allan; four great-grandchildren, Christian, Elijah, Auden and Emerson and one due in September and six who claimed her as their grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Alice Leenhouts; birth mother, Marian Deisler Johnson; birth father, Melvin Jackson, brothers, Robert Jackson, Charles Jackson; sister, Cora Jackson; infant daughter, Heather Gamet and her exhusband, Garry Gamet.

Eugene (Gene) passed away at his home peacefully with family by his side on Friday, April 10, 2020. He was born in Plainwell, MI on July 14th 1933, the son of the late Charles and Irene (Cutcher) Roberts. Gene proudly served as a US Army Staff Sergeant in the Korean War with the 7th ID Scout/Recon Unit and was awarded his Combat Infantryman Badge. He was also a Life Member of Fidelity Masonic Lodge 513 in Otsego. Gene had a lifelong passion for family, woodworking, hunting and Martin football games. His grandkids thought his name was Damnit Gene, until they got older and realized that was just what Grandma called him. They would each eventually call him Papa. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Anthony (1965), Jack (1977), sister, Sarah Newnum (2000), and daughter Bobbie Jo (1990). Surviving is Gene's wife of 65 years Marcia (Banks) Roberts of Plainwell, Mi. Their children are Shelly (David) Lafountain, Sheryl (Gordy) Roberts, George (Dan) (Kim) Roberts, and Toni (Steve) Allen. Gene and Marcia have twenty four grandchildren, thirty great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. After a peaceful passing at her Lake Doster home, Dot went to be with her loving Lord on Friday, April 10, 2020. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gene, whom she married on March 30, 1946. The couple enjoyed nearly 70 years of marriage together. They proudly raised three sons, Douglas (Sharon) Watson, Kenneth (Gail) Watson and Dennis (Liz) Watson. Dot cherished her six grandchildren, Lori Layman, Jason (Gina) Watson, Scott (Tonia) Watson, Rick Watson, Jessy (Chad) Doxtator and Jenny (Jeff) Doychich along with eleven great-grandchildren. Dot was a long-time member of the First Congregational Church of Otsego. She actively served on the prayer team, hospitality team, and care and compassion team. She will always be remembered for her famous peanut brittle that she shared with so many. She loved her life traveling with Gene, golfing and playing cards. A private family graveside service will take place at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell on Tuesday, April 14, 2020. A celebration of Dot’s life will be held at a later time. Mark passed away Saturday, April 11, 2020 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born October 1, 1960 in Royal Oak, the son of Edwin and Ella “Teddy” (Heidmann) Wagstaff. Mark had been a manager for several G.L. Perry retail stores in the area and for the last 20 years worked at Perrigo until his retirement due to medical issues last summer. In his free time Mark enjoyed doing puzzles, being outside and photography. He was known as Papa Mark and loved spending time with his grandchildren and nieces and nephews. On October 29, 2005 in Jenison, he married Sandra Parrish who survives. Also surviving are his step-children, Amber (Jason) Breedveld of Otsego and Tom (Kim Simpson) Nichols of Plainwell; grandchildren, Bre, Collin, Maddy, Katherine, Emilie and Parker; siblings, Sharey (Harry) Biles, Joan (Jim) Oleson, Heidi (Jim Heater) Wagstaff, Lisa (Steve) Creed; sisters-in-law, Linda Wagstaff and Pam (Lance Hildebrand) Try along with many nieces and nephews. Mary “Pat” Newman passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2020 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. She was born December 8, 1931 in Milwaukee, WI, the daughter of John and Ada Duggan. Pat was a graduate of Iron Mountain High School and was a teacher’s aide at Otsego Public Schools for several years. In her free time Pat enjoyed baking, especially pasties, reading and going to the casino. She liked watching the Detroit Tigers and MSU Spartans, but her favorite was watching her grandsons play high school sports. Pat was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Otsego. On February 13, 1960 she married Ronald Newman and recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. Surviving are her husband; children, David (Rhonda) Newman and Paula (Joe) Dingman; grandchildren, Andrew and Jacob Newman; brother, James (Debbie) Nimmer; sister-in-law, Kay Duggan and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, John Duggan, Terry Duggan and Daniel Nimmer. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Burial will take place at Prairieville Cemetery. Over the years I have been fond of sayings that inspire. One of them appears at the top of this column. I think the epilogue to Easter spells out the truth of the saying, “Hope changes everything!”

On the afternoon of our Lord’s resurrection, Jesus appeared to two sad people as they walked along the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus. Not recognizing Jesus, they talked to Him about what had just happened. They were in sorrow, not knowing that Jesus had been raised from the dead.

When we lose a loved one, it is normal to remember the events leading up to their death. Talking and walking it out is a good way of handling our grief. Sometimes in sorrow we are blinded to Christ’s living presence and the thing I want you to notice is how they spoke of hope in the past tense; “But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel …” (Luke 24:21). It seemed to them that hope had died with Christ.

Jesus listened to them and engaged them in conversation. He spoke of how the Scriptures pointed to Him. It was nearly evening when they arrived to their destination. The Scripture says they “urged Him strongly to stay with them” (Luke 24:29). Their eyes were opened to His living presence in the breaking of bread. Suddenly He disappeared from their sight. They spoke of how their hearts burned within them as they walked with Him and talked with Him along the way, opening the Scriptures to them (Luke 24:32).

They learned a great truth: hope changes everything! Without the resurrection of Jesus Christ there would be no such thing as hope. In the words of the hymn writer, “Because He lives, I can face tomorrow; because he lives, all fear is gone; because I know he holds the future, and life is worth the living just because he lives” (Gloria and William Gaither, 1971).

Hope changes the way we think and the way we live. It changes the way we act, and the way we react. In an uncertain world, trust in the sovereignty of God and give hope a chance because hope changes everything!

Prayer: Dear Lord, We affirm the words of Hebrews 6:19. “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” In Your strong name we pray. Amen.
