It’s Road Construction Season. Driver’s Are Urged to Consider Safety of Road Workers Safety agencies across the nation join forces to increase public awareness of work-zone safety issues. As part of the Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) national safety campaign, a vision of eliminating fatalities on our nation's roads, National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) became a national event in 2000. While the number of work zone fatalities has dropped significantly since then, there’s much more that needs to be done, and that starts with you, the driver. The theme for the 2016 National Work Zone Awareness Week, April 11 through the 18th was "Don't Be That Driver!" It only takes a split second of distraction to dramatically change lives forever.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Michigan State Police (MSP), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Consumers Energy, the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA), the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association (MITA), the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) have teamed up to urge all motorists to be aware of work zones and focus at all times behind the wheel.
"National studies show that over 95 percent of all crashes are the direct result of driver error," said First Lieutenant Jim Flegel of the MSP. "Work zones are dynamic places that can change from minute to minute, so motorists should slow down, use extra focus and not tailgate." Throughout the country in 2014: • Driver and vehicle passengers accounted for 82 percent of work zone fatalities. • 669 work zone traffic-related fatalities occurred (up 13 percent from 2013), with 46 crashes involving multiple fatalities; • 31,251 work zone injuries occurred (a 9 percent increase from 2013) • 116 worker fatalities occurred (a 9 percent increase from 2013) • 246 large trucks and buses (235 large trucks, 11 buses) were involved in fatal crashes in work zones (a 27 percent increase from 2013).
"The faces of people who are represented by crash statistics could be any one of us," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. "Each one of those numbers represents a person who left behind parents, siblings, children, and friends who were devastated by their loss. The tragedy of these lost lives is unspeakable. Those that are lost in work zone crashes touch each of us personally because they were part of our industry and by extension, our lives." April 19, 2016 - Plainwell Department of Public Safety issues an advisory concerning the recreational use of the Kalamazoo River. Spring is here and water sport enthusiasts are anxious to get on the river for kayaking, canoeing and fishing. The Kalamazoo River basin remains high, swift and very cold as a result of heavy rainfall over the past few weeks. Currents are extremely strong and fast, and there are several underwater hazards which may cause even the most experienced kayaker or canoers to have difficulties. Plainwell DPS urges river-goers and novice kayakers to refrain from kayaking or canoeing inthe Kalamazoo River until waters subside to safer levels. Those who do take to the water should take extra precautions such as filing a safe boating plan with someone telling them their entry and exit points and time of return. Boaters should also know their location at all times, have a full charged cellphone on them in a waterproof case and must wear personal flotation devices (life jackets). Boaters should also be cautious not to overload their kayak or canoe and be mindful of capacity limitations and the current cold water temperatures which could cause hypothermia in a matter of minutes. Bystanders are cautioned against jumping into moving waters to help. Those citizens who attempt to help anyone in distress should first call 911. Do not enter the water, even with a life jacket. Use items such as long poles, branches, or ropes to reach out to victims and be careful around riverbanks which may collapse due to high water erosion.

Shel Silverstein wrote a delightful poem, “Lookin’ for My Missin’ Piece” which in part reads:
“Oh, I’m lookin’ for my missin’ piece … Hi-dee-ho, here I go, lookin’ for my missin’ piece…Because IT is missing a piece, IT cannot roll very fast. So IT stops to talk to a worm, or smell a flower, or let a butterfly land on its head. One day IT discovers a piece that seems perfect… In jubilation, IT begins to roll, faster and faster, because IT is now perfect. IT rolls so fast that IT can no longer talk to a worm or smell a flower… So IT stops rolling and IT sets down its missing piece gently and slowly rolls away. Not surprisingly, then, IT can now smell the flowers and talk to the worms and stop for butterflies. IT has learned a valuable lesson … there is value in incompleteness.”
Once there was a young man who was “looking for his missing piece.” The story is recorded in Mark l0:17-27. He had it all … wealth, youth, position and possessions. He had even kept the commandments, but there was still something missing in his life. So he came to Jesus asking what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus could see that the young man’s problem was his love of money. Jesus said, “Go, and sell everything you have … then come follow me” (Mark l0:21). The Scripture says when the man heard this “his face fell and he went away sad, because he had great wealth” (Mark l0:22). Jesus was not saying disposing of wealth is a requirement of entering heaven. It has been said, “The young man’s problem wasn’t that he owned much, but that he was owned by much.” Jesus requires first place in our lives (Matthew 6:33). Salvation is not by works, but by the grace of God (Ephesians 2:8, 9). Jesus loves us even when we get it wrong (Mark l0:21). The only way to find personal fulfillment and contentment is by believing in Jesus Christ as our Savior and allowing Him to be the Lord of our lives. The story ends with these hopeful words, “With God all things are possible” (Mark l0:27).
Prayer: Dear God, help us to find our missing piece, our “faith-link” in Jesus Christ in whose name we pray. Amen.

OBITUARY
Dick passed away with family at his side on April 15, 2016 at his home. Dick was born on July 2, 1929 to Harry & Vietta (Brown) Gangwer. Dick’s family includes his wife of 63 years, Jeannine; his children: Michael (Susan) Gangwer of Valdosta, GA and Jeannice Wisnaski of Plainwell, MI; his sister-in-law Carol Gangwer of Cincinnati, OH and a brother-in-law David Niley of Greenville, OH; 4 grandchildren: Zachery Robert (Nicole) Gangwer, Gretchen Adie (Vinny) O’dea, Jacob Taylor Wisnaski and Matthew Richard Wisnaski; 1 great grandchild Sawyer Michael Gangwer as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Robert Gangwer and his sister Karen Niley. Dick served his country proudly during the Korean War in the United States Air Force. He worked for the American Aggregates Corp. until he retired. His cremains will be interred at Ft. Custer National Cemetery with military honors at a later date. Richard passed away peacefully with his family by his side, Friday, April 15, 2016 in Kalamazoo. He was born December 19, 1935 in Otsego the son of Charles and Ida (Herbst) Kling. Richard was a member of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Otsego. He enjoyed spending time with Justin and Karrie and his family most of all. In his spare time Richard liked doing yard work, gardening and fishing. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was employed with Parker Hannifin, Otsego for 41 years. On August 7, 1965 he married Ann White who survives. Also surviving are grandson, Justin (Karrie) Kling of Kalamazoo; daughter-inlaw Tammy Kling (Hal) of Kewaskum, WI; sister, Irene Haas of Otsego; sister-in-law, Shirley Kling of Plainwell along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Kling, his parents and siblings, Esther (Bill) Peterson, Minnie (Norman) Pike, Carl (Irma) Kling, Alice (Clare) Drake, Caroline Kling, Ray (Wanda) Kling, Ed (Glenda) Kling, Lenard (Pat) Kling and Don Kling. A memorial service took place Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Otsego. Pastor Andrew Martens officiated. Beverly J. (Baldwin) Patterson, wife of the Reverend Paul E. Patterson, died April 19, 2016 in Grand Rapids. She was born in Lawton on April 11, 1934 the daughter of Roy and Marian (Rodgers) Baldwin. In 1942, the Baldwin family moved to Albion, where Bev graduated from high school and then attended Central Michigan University. On August 27, 1955 at the First Methodist Church in Albion she married Paul Patterson. Together they served United Methodist churches throughout southwestern Michigan until Paul’s retirement in 1990. They moved to Otsego where they spent their retirement years. Surviving are her husband, siblings, Georgia (Larry) Bearman of TN and Rodger (Janet) Baldwin of AZ along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Polly Colwell and Evelyn Buckenberger. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A graveside service will take place Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 12:30 P.M. at Oak Grove Cemetery in Lawton with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Contributions in memory of Beverly may be made to Hospice of Michigan or Clark Retirement Community of Grand Rapids. Diane (Smith) Shumaker lost her long battle with dementia on April 20, 2016. She will be remembered by all who knew her for loving kindness, her warm smile, and her gracious, gentle ways. Diane loved people and she loved her community. She spent countless hours doing for othersfrom noticing children without proper winter clothing, and doing something about it back in the early 70's, to grocery shopping for people who couldn't go for themselves, and babysitting for friends so they could accomplish their life goals, to creating a loving home where family and ALL friends wanted to gather. Diane took great pride in her family and wanted nothing more than for everyone to be together, especially at the holidays. She enjoyed golf, tennis, fishing, boating, gardening, playing euchre (very competitively), cooking, shopping, and spending time with husband Jack at their place in Florida. Diane would wish to be remembered most of all for the way she loved-unconditionally, non-judgmentally, and graciously- every person she met. Surviving are her husband Kenneth (Jack) Shumaker, son Daniel (Annette) Shumaker, daughter Danene (David) Gless; grandchildren Kayte, Olivia & Mitchell; her sister Sandra (Robert) Nichols; 7 nieces and nephews, and many cousins, all very dear to her. Visitation and Memorial Service will be Saturday April 23, 2016 at 10 am and 11am respectively with a lunch immediately following memorial. All will take place at Plainwell First United Methodist church, 200 Park St, Plainwell. Donations may be made in her honor to either Plainwell United Methodist or to Wings of Hope Hospice of Allegan.

Carlene passed away Thursday, April 14, 2016 at Borgess Medical Center. She was born June 15, 1931 the daughter of Charles and Philitha (Schultz) Conard. Carlene was a woman of strong faith and loved attending Watson Bible Church. She also enjoyed delivering baskets and cards to shut-ins and to friends in area nursing homes. She was an animal lover and in her spare time she enjoyed doing puzzle books, doing jigsaw puzzles, mowing her yard on her lawn tractor, working in her flower gardens, going to yard sales, baking; especially sugar cookies, going out to eat, sewing, doing embroidery, painting ceramics, and flying kites with the kids. In 1949 she married George Oisten who passed away in 2009. Surviving are her daughters, Georgia (Dale) Washburn of Martin and Trudy Henrickson of Allegan; 7 grandchildren, Teresa (Dan) Owens, Dale Washburn Jr., Lynn Washburn, Jennifer Lynn Henrickson, Amber Kay Henrickson, Andrea Nicole (Andy) Bodfish and Kimberly Ann (Justin) Normon; 5 greatgrandchildren; 2 great-great-granddaughters and sister, Jackie Adams. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and several siblings. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the At the Master’s Feet Discipleship Ministry in Otsego with Pastor Ray Brown officiating.
