Londa Lee HAMILTON AGE 55 - KALAMAZOO, MI

Londa sadly passed away Monday, April 12, 2021 after suffering a stroke on Friday, April 9, 2021. Londa was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on May 3, 1965, the daughter of Ronald Lee Hamilton and Helen Ruth (Hall) Hamilton. Her parents were surprised and extremely proud to have had identical twin daughters, Londa weighing 3 lbs, 7 ½ oz and her twin, Linda Lou, weighing 4 lbs, 9 ½ oz; after doctors initially told them that they were having a baby boy. They were mirror twins too, with Londa being left-handed and Linda being right handed. As toddlers, the twins shared their own unique language and had a very special bond, even during disagreements with each other, one could not be punished because they would always defend one another. When older, they referred to their favorite memories as their “Laverne and Shirley moments” where they laughed so hard they had tears in their eyes and could hardly breathe. Londa attended Kalamazoo Public Schools, graduating from Kalamazoo Central and took many classes at Kalamazoo Valley Community College and Western Michigan University. She was a very smart and independent woman who succeeded in many vocations, her favorite employment positions being held at KVCC, The Hilton, West Main Movie Theater, Fetzer Institute, Bronson Pediatrics, Dermatalic, Borgess Pipp Hospital and WMU Bronco Express and Computer Science. Londa was currently a Driver for O’Reilly Auto Parts on Gull Road, she loved her job, co-workers, the people she met, and wanted to retire from there. She spoke often of her love and respect for Amanda Phillips, Manager, and Randy Lambrecht, District Manager. Londa was a kind, compassionate, and caring person with a beautiful soul, who always thought of friends and loved ones before herself. She loved people and was always protective over children and the elderly. Her favorite person on this planet was her niece Lillie, and Londa was hers, too. Their bond, friendship, advocacy for each other was insurmountable, Londa also became Aunt Londa to all of Lillie’s friends. Londa was a special person to 21 month old Kallen Brossia, and his mom Samantha. Kallen could say Mom and Dad, however, he did not say any other family names yet, but he said and knew his “Onda”. Londa maintained lifelong friendships from childhood, school, employment, boyfriends and even all of their families continued to stay in contact with her. Londa loved being outdoors in nature and going for walks, camping, traveling, spending days at the beach (especially Lake Michigan), riding motorcycles or just going for a drive (and don’t ask to drive either). Londa participated in the Honor Flight Network, which escorts veterans to the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C. She was paired with veteran Robert Erwin Mitchell of Niles, Michigan, they immediately bonded and loved each other. Londa had just recently found out that he had passed this year in January. Londa wasn’t able to travel to all of the places she dreamed and desired to visit, she always wanted to go to Londa, Italy, New York City, and Greece, among many other places. Londa was known for her love of music and attended many concerts over the years. Some of her favorite genres were rock & roll, country, zydeco and religious hymns. A favorite musician of hers is Tommy Castro. Londa recently purchased a new van, and wanted her Tommy Castro bumper sticker moved over to the new vehicle. Londa was also a great painter and bargain shopper. Her house was always decorated extra cute with knick knacks, an abundance of magnets, and holiday decor. Londa loved all holiday celebrations, St Patrick's Day was especially her favorite because she loved clovers. She was a ﬁrm believer in Young Living Essential Oils and holistic health, because she wanted everyone to feel good and be happy. Throughout her life, Londa loved all animals and had many pets. She leaves behind her sweet pets, dog Norman (12 years old), cat Andy (18 years old), lovebird Lucy and betta ﬁsh Percy. Norman went everywhere with Londa and loved their car rides and daily walks. They were attached at the hip and best friends, all of Londa’s pets will miss her so. Londa is preceded in death by her grandparents, William and Lillie Hamilton, Victor and Ruth Hall, her brother-in-law Rick Cyr, along with aunts, uncles, family members and friends. She leaves to cherish her memory, her parents, her sister Lillie Elaine Brady, brother Ronald Jeffrey Hamilton, and sister Linda Lou Hamilton; her nieces, Emily Elaine (Alejandro) Sandoval and Lillie Ruth Hamilton; great nieces Eleanora and Genevieve Sandoval, and many aunts, uncles, dozens of cousins and other extended family. As well as her best friends, whom Londa considered to be her family, Rindi Clawson, Dee Clawson, Ronna Bonneau and Larry Oetman. In accordance with her wishes, cremation will take place and a gathering to honor Londa's life will be scheduled for later on this spring. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice, supporting the elderly, children, or animals in Londa’s name through the care of the funeral home. James S. LOBRETTO AGE 90 - IRONS, MI Formerly of Kalamazoo

James went to be with his Lord and savior on April 17, 2021. He was born in Otsego, MI, on January 13, 1931, the son of the late Anthony and Frances (Mario) LoBretto. James was a wise, considerate, and loving man. He had a great passion for nature and being in God’s creation. “Meatball” as he was known by his friends, had a warm smile and firm handshake. He was a hard, dependable worker who retired as a supervisor from National Waterlift after 42 years. Upon retiring he fulfilled a lifelong dream of moving to Irons, MI, where he spent his days hunting, fishing, and birdwatching. James enjoyed the simple things in life and was most at peace watching nature through the window. He was a lifetime member of the NRA. He had a strong faith in the Lord. Above all James loved his family and friends and leaves them with the legacy of a life well lived. All who knew James will miss him! On September 26, 1974 he married Dolores (Ferguson) LoBretto, who survives. He is also survived by five children, Linda (Pierre) Cyr, James (Terri) LoBretto Jr., Frances (Ross) Brown, Tony (Priscilla) LoBretto, Timothy LoBretto; a stepson, Michael (Debbie) Riethmeier; many grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and friends. He was also preceded in passing by a brother, six sisters, and a stepdaughter, Lisa Riethmeier. In accordance with James’s wish cremation will take place and a memorial to celebrate his life will be held at a later date. Patricia DePlanche was a warrior who lost her battle with cancer on April 6, 2021. Patricia, was a compassionate and kind soul who was always cheerful. She was born, May 27, 1951 to Harry and Shirley Lambert in Paw Paw, Michigan. Her early childhood was spent in Lawton, Michigan where she was doted upon by her older siblings as well as her younger brother. She attended Parchment Schools and graduated from Allegan Adult Education after she had made the decision to attain her goal of graduating from high school as an adult. Pat was a valued volunteer at the Adventist Service Center in Otsego and attended the 7th Day Adventist Church where she had many close friends. She enjoyed visiting with her friends at the Martin Library Book Club. Pat was an avid reader and enjoyed doing a variety of crafts in her spare time. She particularly enjoyed shopping and eating out with her sisters. Pat’s joyful attitude and her sincere friendship will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her zest for life and her positive attitude were contagious and her ‘happy dance’ would put a smile on anyone’s face! She passed away in her home and was surrounded by loving family members and friends. She is survived by her loving children Cherrie Buckner (Chad Williams), Patrick DePlanche, and Ralph DePlanche, her adoring sisters Connie Scheel (Stan), Linda Gorton (Lee), her brother Chuck Lambert and her beloved cat Shirley and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Shirley Lambert, her brother Harry Lambert (Carol), and her sister Sandra Boaz (Frank). Also, preceded in death by Ernie DePlanche and Hank Buckner. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wings of Hope Hospice or the West Michigan Cancer Center

“PREACHERS AND PULPITS”

“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have never heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? – Romans 10:14

Some years ago TIME magazine wrote a feature article on preaching and came to the conclusion that “Preaching is a lost art today.” I cannot say I was shocked at what I read. I recall one pastor who did not call it a sermon. He called it a “Reflection.” The pulpit in most contemporary worship settings has given way to a music stand. I know of one church where the pulpit has been relegated to a church stairwell.

When Mark, the earliest gospel writer, described the coming of Jesus he spoke of the primacy of preaching. He did not say Jesus came to evangelize, or teach or promote a new program. He said “He came preaching” (Mark 1:14).

I have always had an interest in pulpits. This is undoubtedly a reflection of my upbringing, ministerial training and five decades of preaching. I have always been comfortable preaching behind a pulpit, as opposed to some who like to walk around as they speak. A few years ago, while visiting Washington, D.C. we visited the National Cathedral. I was greatly impressed, not only by the majestic architecture of the building but by the beauty of the pulpit. I could only think of the great preachers who had stood behind that pulpit delivering the good news of Jesus Christ including the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who preached his last sermon there. I was so impressed I had my picture taken in front of the pulpit!

There is no mention in the Bible of Jesus preaching from a pulpit. He didn’t need one! Jesus was both the messenger and the message in one person.

This brings me to the main point. It is not about the preacher or the pulpit. It is always about the message. Or, as George Buttrick said it, “There is no such thing as a great preacher, only a great gospel.”

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to live out the good news of Jesus Christ every day. In Your strong name. Amen.

ADOPTABLE Pet of the Week! Dixon is a GREAT hound, he is sweet and loving, fun and playful. And he walks great on a leash too! Dixon would love a forever home with people who have a great sense of humor and are into spoiling their dog rotten. Dixon is 2 years old and weighs approximately 75 pounds. He does well with other dogs and would love to join a fun pack of dogs. He would also be very happy in a home with kids to play with him. It is recommended that any children in Dixon's forever home are 8 years old and up, but great homes with younger children will be considered. Dixon would do best in a cat free home.
