WE CAN STOP Higher taxes! Now the current Otsego City Commissioners are wanting to put on the August 2nd and or November 8th ballot a proposal to change the city charter from 12.5 mills to 15 mills. This action would be permanent. Many citizens have attended the commission meetings asking and telling the current commissioners to take a serious look at the city budget to cut out the fat. There CAN be cuts and keep our essential workers in place as is!
Workshops are for public input, information, and comments. We have been (and will continue) attending meetings and have not seen the current city comissioners interested in or recommending or having the desire for any budget reductions. If you would like to know what to do next, please consider: 1. Ask for more information or volunteer to help inform others. Please call 269-377-8075 or email nickbreedveld@gmail.com 2. Please attend Otsego City Commission Workshops and the City Commission Meetings. 3. April 18th Workshop Meeting 6:00 PM and 7 PM - Budget presentation of DPW Motor POOL and DDA Funds 4. May 2nd Workshop Meeting 5:30 PM and 7 PM - Budget presentation of General Public Safety, Capital Project, Equipment Replacement, and Solid Waste Reduction Funds 5. May 16th Workshop Meeting 5:30 PM and 7 PM - Budget Hearing and Adoption of Annual Appropriation.

SPRING HOME IMPROVEMENT I 2022
Dishing on popular grilling methods Any time of year has the potential to be grilling season. Grilling is not only a way to prepare meals; for many, it’s also a passion. “Barbecuing is no longer just a pastime, but an integral part of the North American lifestyle,” said Jack Goldman, president and CEO, Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association. “We expect consumers’ passion for flavorful food and entertaining their family and friends to continue to increase.” The HPBA’s 2017 industry survey found that 70 percent of adults in the United States own a grill or smoker. Those numbers are even greater in Canada, where 80 percent of adults have a grill to call their own. Flavor, lifestyle and entertainment are the prime reasons people grill. When it comes time to replace or upgrade a grill, the age-old question remains: Do I choose a charcoal- or gas-fueled grill? That decision can spark heated debate among grillmasters, but for many it may boil down to a number of factors.
Cost Charcoal grills tend to be the less expensive than gas grills. The food and beverage trend reporter Chowhound indicates that a lowend grill can be purchased for around $25.
However, deluxe charcoal kettles and other charcoal alternatives tend to be considerably more expensive. The most popular gas grills may cost anywhere from $130 to $300. Those who prefer more options and highend offerings can pay between $800 and $1,500.
High heat searing When cooking expensive, well-marbled steaks or other dishes that benefit from highheat searing, charcoal grills seem to outperform gas ones, at least according to the experts behind The Sweethome, a product recommendation site owned by The New York Times Company. That isn’t to say gas counterparts can’t come very close. And deploying a cast-iron pan on top of the grates can help concentrate the heat and allow the meat to cook in its own fat.

Portability
Gas grills generally are easier to clean, and home chefs do not have to wrangle much ash or leftover coals once they’re done cooking.
For those who want to grill at home and on the go, then a charcoal grill is the right investment. A charcoal grill can be brought to a campsite or a park without going to great lengths.
Charcoal and gas grills each have their merits. It is up to consumers to decide which features reign supreme as they shop for new grills.

Convenience There is no doubt that gas grills are a marvel in regard to convenience, especially when they are directly tied into a home’s propane or natural gas system. In such instances, one never has to worry about running out of gas. Gas fuel tends to be cheaper than charcoal and easier to clean, and some gas grills come with side burners that enable cooks

ways to upgrade a landscape
An inviting, well-tended landscape can add significant curb appeal to a home. Such a landscape also can serve as a point of pride and welcome homeowners each evening as they arrive home from work. Landscaping projects run the gamut from simple changes that can be accomplished on a weekend afternoon to more significant and costly undertakings that require the work of a professional. Budget-conscious homeowners may be looking for simpler projects, and the following are some less costly ways to upgrade a landscape.
• Add a pop of color with planters. Awe-inspiring colors can make a landscape stand out from surrounding properties. Flowers, bushes and plants may be the first thing homeowners consider when trying to add color to their lawns, but planters can provide a more immediate way to give exterior grounds some color. Bold planters won’t lose their color in a matter of weeks like many flowers do, and homeowners can switch planters so the colors align with the season. For example, some pastel planters can evoke the spirit of spring, while orange planters can be filled with mums to give a landscape an autumnal feel. • Plant perennials around the property. Wellmaintained perennials grow back each year, making them ideal for homeowners who don’t have the time or desire to map out
new gardening arrangements each spring. Planting perennials also is a great way to add color around the property without breaking the bank. • Upgrade walkways. Though it’s more expensive than adding planters and planting perennials, upgrading old and cracked walkways is a great way to give a property a whole new look. According to the renovation experts at HomeAdvisor, homeowners typically pay between $6 and $12 per square foot for new concrete walkway installation. Homeowners working on a budget can target spots where walkways have already cracked and fix those areas first before continuing the project piecemeal until all the old walkways have been replaced. • Plant to create privacy. Homeowners spent
more time at home than ever before during the pandemic, and some might have grown tired of seeing what their neighbors are up to. Fencing might be the first solution homeowners consider when looking to make their landscapes more private. But new fencing installation can be expensive, costing homeowners between $1,667 and $4,075 on average, according to BobVila.com. A more costly and natural solution is to plant trees around the perimeter. Speak with a local landscaping professional, who can survey the property to see which trees might thrive and provide the privacy homeowners want. Creating an inviting landscape doesn’t have to break the bank. Various small and relatively inexpensive projects can change the look and feel of a home’s exterior. SH222681

Trees benefit a landscape by serving both aesthetic and utilitarian functions. A home surrounded by healthy green trees can be a sight to behold, and those same trees can benefit surrounding plants and wildlife at the same time. As appealing as trees are, not all trees and landscapes make for the perfect match. The Arbor Day Foundation notes the importance of planning when designing a landscape. Planning ensures the trees homeowners ultimately choose for their properties will grow well in the soil and moisture present in their yards. Careful consideration of a handful of variables can help homeowners
determine which trees will make the best fit for their properties. • Height: Homeowners must consider the projected height of a tree before planting it. Avoid trees that will bump into anything when fully grown, as that can adversely affect surrounding greenery and pose a safety hazard. The ADF’s tree sizing guide can be accessed at https://www.arborday.org/trees/rig htTreeAndPlace/size.cfm and serves as an invaluable resource for homeowners who want to plant new trees around their properties. • Canopy spread: Trees grow out as well as up, so it’s important to consider their potential width at maturity as well. The ADF sizing
guide can help homeowners get an idea of how wide a tree is likely to be at maturity. Trees that spread out quite a bit don’t necessarily need to be avoided, but it’s important that they’re planted far enough apart so they don’t adversely affect surrounding plants. In addition, wide trees that are planted too close together can make the landscape appear crowded, taking something away from its aesthetic appeal. • Growth rate: Growth rate is an important variable because it can affect how quickly homeowners will see changes in their landscapes. Homeowners who want to plant for privacy can consider trees with quick growth rates or purchase more mature trees that are already

SPRING HOME IMPROVEMENT I 2022
Considerable thought goes into designing a home’s interior. From which color to paint the walls to the size of the living room couch, homeowners must make a variety of decisions when planing their home interiors.
One way to simplify interior design decisions is to choose a style. Interior design styles run the gamut from traditional to modern, and each style has its own unique look and feel. Though homeowners need not feel beholden to any particular item associated with a given style, three of the more popular styles, traditional, modern and farmhouse, each have certain key components that can ensure a home ends up with a look homeowners are aiming for.
1. Traditional
popular modern style, and home interiors fashioned in this style tend to be light, airy and not crowded with furnishings. Calm, soft tones are a go-to with urban modern interiors, helping to create the serene settings many homeowners are hoping to create with this style.
Homes with a traditional interior style give a formal yet welcoming feel. Many individuals associate crown molding and wainscotting with traditional interiors, so that’s something homeowners aiming for this style should keep in mind. The Basics of Container Gardening
COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078...Spring Home Improvement...April 30, 2022....Phone 694-9431
SPRING HOME IMPROVEMENT I 2022
Gardening is a rewarding hobby that has been linked to health benefits like reduced stress and improved mental wellbeing. Gardening also can lead to an inviting home landscape full of attractive blooms and/or delicious foods. Backyard gardens have long been planted after clearing a plot of land, tilling and amending the soil, and planting rows of favorite crops. However, gardening can be less labor-intensive and even more successful when people consider the many benefits of container gardening. What is container gardening? As its name implies, container gardening is growing plants inside of containers. These containers can be flower pots, rectangular deck boxes or even large raised garden beds. Pros to container gardening One of the advantages of container gardening is that plants can be moved in and out of sunlight to ensure the right growing conditions. This isn’t as easily achieved when gardens are stationary. Also, beginner gardeners may be more able to control soil conditions inside of a

small container rather than a vast ground-based garden, which will require a good deal of manual labor. Pots and boxes also can be grouped together to create eye-popping displays, usually at lower costs than the sheer volume of plants that would be needed to fill out an expansive landscape. Cons to container gardening Container garden plants will not have direct access to the ground, so they need gardeners to create the ideal growing conditions. Developing the right care formula can be challenging. The home and garden resource The Spruce says that drainage is an important factor in container gardening, and most containers do not offer enough drainage holes. If water cannot escape the soil, the roots of the plants can rot and die. It’s not enough to add stones or gravel to the bottom of containers. Drill additional holes in the bottom (1⁄2inch in diameter for small or medium-sized pots; one inch in diameter for larger pots). Also, be sure to check on soil moisture so that watering can be adjusted. During hot stretches, plants may need to be watered more frequently.

Plan for plants that play well Grouping plants together can create visually stunning combinations. However, it is important to choose plants that require the same amount of light and moisture. Look at plant tags when visiting the garden center and select complementary plants, or ask a store employee. Mixing different plant shapes, colors and leaf textures, as well as plants of various heights, can help containers look filled out.

SPRING HOME IMPROVEMENT I 2022
How to Corral a Crabgrass Infestation A well-manicured lawn adds undeniable curb appeal to a property. Homeowners who take pride in their lawns should know that they can take that pride all the way to the bank, as investing in a pristine lawn can provide a significant return at resale.
grass is thin. Crabgrass gets its name from its appearance, as it grows from the center outward and mimics the look of crab legs emerging from the center shell.
A 2019 report from the real estate experts at HomeLight found that a $268 investment in lawn care service can add $1,211 at resale. That’s a 352 percent return on investment. Homeowners can capitalize on a pristine lawn even further by tending to their own lawns. Crabgrass is one lawn problem that can compromise the look of an otherwise lush lawn. Thankfully, crabgrass can be controlled without much effort.
The University of Minnesota Extension notes that crabgrass is an annual plant. That means a crabgrass infestation that’s problematic once the mercury rises in the summer will die out in late fall or early winter. But crabgrass germinates in the spring, so homeowners will want to take steps to prevent it long before it becomes an eyesore in summer.
The growth of crabgrass
How to corral crabgrass The UME notes that application of a pre-emergent herbicide before crabgrass seeds can germinate is an effective way to eliminate it. The timing of that application can be tricky, as jumping the gun and applying the herbicide too early can prove fruitless. The same goes for applying herbicides too late. Crabgrass will likely still grow if the herbicide is applied too early or too late. UME recommends applying a pre-emergent herbicide when soil temperatures approach 55 F.
Identifying crabgrass Crabgrass is a weed that grows in areas of a lawn that are bare or where the
Home Depot notes that a chemical
treatment may be applied after crabgrass has already grown in, but this option requires careful application to avoid killing surrounding healthy grass. Crabgrass can be pulled out by hand, but such an approach can be physically daunting. That’s especially so because crabgrass thrives when the weather is hot and dry. So homeowners who intend to pull crabgrass by hand can decrease their risk of dehydration or
heat-related illness by drinking plenty of water and pulling the grass during early morning or evening hours when the sun is lower and temperatures are more mild. Crabgrass can compromise the look of an otherwise healthy lawn. But various strategies can eliminate crabgrass and restore a lawn without much effort on the part of homeowners. GT224828

Low-Maintenance Lawn Alternatives
COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078...Spring Home Improvement...April 30, 2022....Phone 694-9431
A traditional lawn may not be right for every property nor desired by every homeowner. There is no denying that lawns take time and effort to establish and daily or weekly maintenance to thrive. Homeowners who find that a traditional lawn is not practical can explore some low-maintenance alternatives.
Wildflower meadow
Homeowners with wide swaths of property may discover meadows are cost- and time-efficient. Stores sell special wildflower meadow mixes of seeds or homeowners can use wildflower plug plants throughout areas where grasses are left to grow longer. This natural area can be a home to wildlife and an idyllic backdrop to a home. Most meadows only require a spring or summer and autumn cut to thrive and look good.
Ornamental grasses
Partition areas of the property for ornamental grasses to grow. The gardening resource Elemental Green says ornamental grasses tend to be drought-resistant and lowmaintenance. They won’t need much fertilizer and are often resistant to pests as well. Ornamental grasses grow in tufts or sprays and will not require mowing. However, they are not ideal for areas that get foot traffic.
Moss
Moss can thrive in shady areas and ones where the soil tends to stay a bit damp. Moss is velvety soft and green, so it can mimic the look of a traditional lawn but won’t require mowing and other upkeep. Because it spreads quickly, moss can take over quite rapidly. You will need to protect areas where you do not want moss by creating barriers to stop spread.
Gravel
Stone and gravel areas can reduce maintenance in the landscape and require very little upkeep. When gravel is installed correctly, weeds may not grow readily. Gravel installation may include laying heavy-duty, semipermeable landscape fabric, which is available in home improvement centers. Gravel is cheaper than pavers and can be just as beautiful.
Artificial turf
If the desired look is a lawn without all the upkeep, there are various artificial grass options on the market. Homeowners who opt for artificial turf can save money and space devoted to lawn mowers and other lawn tools. Grass may be ideal for some, but there are alternatives for people who have troublesome landscapes or desire a low-maintenance product for their homes. GT214821

ADOPTABLE Pets of the Week! ...came to the shelter as an abandoned dog, along with his older "sister" Kelly. Both dogs are currently available for adoption into a loving forever home. Axel can be very sweet and loving, he enjoys being pet and getting back scratches. However, Axel can take a bit of time to warm up to new people. So just give him a few minutes and maybe some encouraging treats and sweet talk to break the ice when you first meet him. Axel is just over 2 years old and weighs approximately 68 pounds. Potential adopters with German Shepherd experience are preferred, plus Axel will need to be signed up for training classes as part of the adoption process. It is recommended that any children in his forever home are 12 years old and up and dog savvy. Axel could join a home with another dog, but will need a cat-free home. If you would like to meet handsome Axel, please fill out an adoption application at. wishbonepetrescue.org The Allegan County Animal Shelter is managed by Wishbone Pet Rescue.

I will exalt you, Lord, for you rescued me. You refused to let my enemies triumph over me. Psalm 30:1 Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. This is how it happened. Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.” At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?” “No”, they replied. Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-handed side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it. John 21:1, 3-6 REFLECTION: It was the love of God that raised Jesus from the dead on Easter morning. Jesus appears by the Sea of Galilee and shares his love with his disciples. He sees that Simon Peter has gone fishing, but has caught nothing. Jesus invites them to cast their nets one more time. They listen and obey, and then hit the mother load! The net was so full of fish they could hardly pull it in. When we respond to Jesus’ invitation His grace fills our hearts and minds and we find a new life and real peace. Great things can happen when someone hears the Word of God and obeys. I dare you to be loved by God. You’ll be amazed! PRAYER: I praise your name Lord Jesus, for you rescued me from a life of blandness. You rescued me from my enemies when I cried out to you. You gave me strength, courage, and purpose. You restored me to a new life filled with your grace. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

“THE POWER OF WORDS” “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver” - Proverbs 25:11 By Rev. Dan Minor
revdminor1945@gmail.com _____________________________________
-
Words. We cannot live without them. Here are some examples from the Bible. God spoke the world into existence. The Old Testament prophets spoke God’s Word with great power. The Word of God is “sharper than a two-edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12). To speak God’s words is to speak God’s truth. The words of the preacher are indispensable (Romans 10:14). The 23rd Psalm has always been regarded as the universal psalm of comfort.
Jesus came as the Word of God incarnate (John 1). He spoke the word and the sick were healed, the lame walked, the blind were able to see, the deaf were able to hear and the dead came to life. The Lord’s Prayer is only 65 words long and yet it tells us all we need to know about how to talk to God. Words.
Words have the power to shape a nation. Less than 275 words in length, Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address consoled a nation at war within itself. During the darkest days of World War II, Sir Winston Churchill, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, was asked to speak to the students of Harrow, his childhood school. The students came with pencils and notebooks to record the words of Britain’s greatest statesman. When it came time for him to speak, he rose to his feet and spoke these words: “Never give in! Never give in! Never! Never! Never! Never!” and he sat down.
From the time we speak our very first words until the time we speak our last, words are powerful. Words can stir up trouble or calm the waters. Words can tear down or build up. Words can discourage or encourage. Words have the power to hurt or to heal.
Words of forgiveness, kindness and appreciation can perform miracles. We have heard the old adage, “Think before you speak.” Here is some wisdom from Solomon of old, “The right word at the right time is like a custom-made piece of jewelry” (Proverbs 25:11; from THE MESSAGE by Eugene H. Peterson). May we glorify God with our words.
Prayer: “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer” (Psalm l9:14 N.R.S.V.). Amen.

Robert George KELLY AGE 73 - PLAINWELL, MI
Rob was born Oct 7, 1948, to John (Jack) and Barbara Kelly, when the family lived in Parma MI, where dad owned and operated his first onion farm. Over the years our family moved to several locations (Jackson MI, West Palm Beach FL, Gun Lake MI, and Winnetka ILL) until finally settling in Plainwell MI where Rob and his five sisters grew up. Rob was a boy scout and served as an altar boy at St. Margaret’s in Otsego MI where our family attended church. He enjoyed swimming in our pool, especially after cutting the grass with the push mower on all three lawns surrounding our house. He also enjoyed downhill skiing, playing golf and football. During High School Rob excelled in Auto Shop and acquired his first job at the Standard Station just down our street. Rob graduated from Plainwell High in 1966, during which one year was spent at Military School. Following graduation Rob enlisted in the Navy, and joined the SeaBees Naval Construction Battalion. He operated and maintained heavy equipment and served from 1968 – 1970, with his last year in Vietnam. After an honorable discharge Rob lived in Kalamazoo MI and worked for GM for a few years. He then drove a large delivery truck for Hybels Produce. A box full of strawberries, bananas, apples and cukes on the seat next to him for the long ride. Rob loved being warm and traveled to Maui, Haiti and Arizona with friends. He then opened a cactus shop in downtown Kalamazoo with a partner for a short time. Rob loved classic rock and the blues. He went to many concerts in the 70’s – 90’s, often buying tickets for family and friends. If you put on a good album, he would pull out his harmonica and play along. He enjoyed riding his Harley, his bicycle and playing golf, but Rob’s real passion was watching sports. He always looked forward to attending the Tigers and Lions games in Detroit, and drove his RV down to Lakeland FL to watch the Tigers spring training several times. He also parked the RV inside the grounds at Martin US 131 Dragway to experience the races from the comfort of his own home. Rob enjoyed bird hunting with our dad throughout the years. Once they took dad’s two Springer Spaniels (Pat and Mike) up into Canada for the dogs first hunting trip. Against Rob’s advice, dad let the dogs off the leash. They ran away and never came back. After becoming a vegetarian Rob used our father’s knowledge of farming to successfully compost, plant and cultivate organic vegetable gardens everywhere he lived NE of Plainwell. His Silver Queen sweet corn remains till this day unequaled. In the early 80’s Rob lived with mom at Lake Doster and worked at Lake Doster Golf Club in maintenance, operating and repairing equipment until he started his own business, RK Excavating. Rob had vision and loved moving the earth to create beautiful landscaping. In the mid 80’s, following in dad’s steps, Rob developed a small community in Orangeville MI and built his first home by a peaceful stream. Remaining a bachelor, Rob’s closest companions were his dogs (Pooka-St Bernard, Bojangles-Irish Setter, Sire-German Shepherd, McBire-German Shepherd. He took them everywhere and if you saw a pickup around town with a big dog in the back it was probably Rob’s. The last three years Rob’s furry companion was a cat he rescued and named Mouser. Rob died suddenly at his latest residence in Plainwell MI April 1, 2022. He had received Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior years before. Preceding Rob and welcoming him into heaven are his parents Jack and Barbara Kelly, his sister Mary Dunn, and sister Christina Langkamp. Remaining this side of heaven are sisters Bobbi Willis, Jacqueline Eckert, and Colleen (Ginger) Salton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate There will be a private interment service held at Fort Custer in Battle Creek MI for the family. A public memorial in Rob’s honor will be planned for a future date. The family is being cared for by the
Avink, McCowen, Secord Funeral Homes and Cremation Society While at www.amsfuneralhomes.com please take time to sign Robert’s guestbook and/or share a memory with his family. 120 S. Woodhams, Plainwell, MI, 269-685-5881
