What Is Sweating A Pipe? Copper plumbing long has been a standard in home construction. Anyone who has a home with copper pipes should have an understanding of how to make repairs in the case of a leak or if modifications need to be made. “Sweating pipesâ€? is one term homeowners may hear when maintaining their pipes. Sweating a pipe refers to soldering a pipe or the joint. Sweating seals a new joint or mends a fault. When sweating a pipe, it is important to do the job correctly so that a soldered pipe can last for years and years. PlanItDIY, a source for how-to advice, says that sweating pipes involves some key steps. • Cut the pipes to the right length using a copper tube cutter or

hacksaw. • Use a file or wire brush to remove burs and smooth down the ends. • Clean the end of the copper pipe with a cleaning brush until the surface is bright all around. In addition, clean the inside of all fittings. • Brush plumbing flux on the brushed surfaces and assemble the joint. The how-to resource Hunker says flux is an acidic paste applied to all of the pieces of copper that you want to connect together. The flux paste will draw in the solder after the pipe is heated using a blow torch. The acid in the flux attracts the solder into the seam between the two copper pieces and fills the gap while creating a semi-permanent bond between the pieces.

• To create the seal, move the flame around the joint to heat it evenly. The copper will get shiny, and the flux will melt. When the pipe begins to dull and the flux sizzles and smokes, it is time to apply solder. Touch lead-free plumbing solder to the joint and apply more heat. • The sweating process is finished when the solder bubbles out of the end of the seam. Let cool and the joint should now be water-tight. Sweating pipes gets easier with practice. Dale passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at Alamo Nursing Home in Kalamazoo. He was born May 3, 1931 in Allegan, the son of Clyde and Cecile (Emmons) Rogers. For over 30 years Dale owned and operated Roger’s Plumbing and Heating. In his free time he enjoyed fishing and playing the violin, especially on Sundays at the Merson Church where he was an active member. On June 17, 1950 in Allegan he married Glenda Grigsby who survives. Also surviving are his children, Gary (Phyllis) Rogers, Terry (Beth) Rogers and Cindy (Ric) Brokus; grandchildren, Tad (Shelly) Rogers, Tim (Lori) Rogers, Sara Faulkner, Matt (Dana) Rogers, Wendie (Sean) Honeysett, Nathan Rogers, Ashley (Asa) Glass, Sean (Bethany) Rogers, Jamie (Ryan) Fox and Eric (Angela) Brokus, several great-grandchildren, siblings, Harry (Donna) Beach, Audrey Greiffendorf, Sandra (Bob) McParlan and sister-in-law, Phyllis Rogers. He was preceded in death by his mother; step-father, Harry Beach; brother, Jim Rogers and grandson, Mark Faulkner. Friends may pay their final respects and have private viewing times Thursday and Friday from 9AM until 5PM. Mary passed away Thursday, May 7, 2020 at Fountain View Assisted Living in Portage. She was born December 23, 1929 in Augusta, the daughter of Clarence and Sarah (Gearhart) Wollenhaupt. For 35 years Mary had worked at Jack Thurman’s Restaurant in Kalamazoo. She had also worked for several years at the Shoppers Guide in Otsego, the Fly Inn in Plainwell and at the Elk’s in Otsego. In her free time she enjoyed working outside, mowing her yard, trimming trees, taking care of her cows and pigs and doing puzzles. Mary was happiest when surrounded by her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are her children, Dick (Barb) Johnson of Otsego, David Drainer of New Hampshire and Marie (Redigo) Bushee-Bailey of Delton; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sister, Sally Hendrixson and special niece, Pam Fuller. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Steven Johnson; sisters, Irene Nichols and Wilma Gregory and great-grandson, Cameron Madison. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. A memorial service will be held at a later time. Contributions in memory of Mary may be made to Heartland Hospice.

Winnie passed away May 11, 2020. She was born on August 6, 1932 to Don and Rosa (Councell) Cochran in Kalamazoo Michigan. Winnie worked for Parker Hannifin until 1978, when she became part-owner of the Redwood Tavern in Augusta until her retirement in 1995. In the 1990’s, Winnie followed her dream of using her beautiful singing voice and she became a popular Karaoke DJ. For the rest of her life, she continued to bring joy and entertainment to Karaoke venues throughout southwest Michigan She won many singing contests as well as winning hearts everywhere she went. On August 2, 1952 Winnie married Duane Schultz. In 1997, she married Ralph Like. Her kind heart and sweet smile are greatly missed by her survivors, her special friend and companion of 18 years, Ken Blair; her only son Denny (Sharrin) Schultz, her pride and joy grandson Blake Schultz and honorary granddaughter Kennedy Rupert; one sister Marge Bird of Florida; one brother Jim (Jeanette) Cochran of Richland; two step daughters Christine Hale and Louise Dyer, both of Otsego; and several nieces and nephews, step grandchildren, great grandchildren and many friends. Winnie is preceded in death by her parents, husband Duane, husband Ralph; sisters Donna and Marla, one brother Roy and stepdaughter Cathy. A private burial and service took place on Friday, May 15th at 1:00. A celebration of life memorial is being planned for a later date. Per Winnies request memorials may be made to Christian Neighbors in lieu of flowers. Winnie’s family is being cared for by the McCowen & Secord Family Funeral Home

“In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job” (Job 1:1)

In facing a crisis we go back to one of the oldest books of the Bible – the Book of Job. Job faced suffering beyond the imagination of most people. He lost his wealth. His children were killed. He lost his health and was shunned by his friends. Even his wife turned away from him. Yet Job remained faithful to God. Some persons are said to have “the patience of Job.” This story is the origin of that saying. Let us learn from this man who “feared God and shunned evil” (Job 1:1). I am listing some lessons one can learn from Job beginning with the most obvious one. 1. BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE “In all this Job did not charge God with wrong doing” (Job 1:22) 2. IT IS OK TO QUESTION GOD. “Why did I not perish at birth, and die as I came from the womb?” (Job 3:11) 3. WE CANNOT ALWAYS TRUST OUR FRIENDS. In the main body of this book, Job’s three friends blame Job for his problems (Chapters 4-12; Chapters 15-21; Chapters 22-37).
