During the present pandemic there is plenty of blame to go around. Why could we not see this coming? Why did we not act sooner? Answer: This is not a time for blaming but a time for figuring things out.

Wise, intelligent and experienced scientists and leaders are working hard to not only defeat the deadly virus, but are already planning ahead for the next possible crisis.

The title for this article appeared some years ago on the Internet from an unknown source. The point is we need to plan ahead. Can you imagine what the people of Noah’s time were thinking when Noah built his Ark in the sunshine? Look at that fool! What is he thinking? He is wasting his time!

Parenthetically, the building of “The Mighty Mac” (Mackinac Bridge) was called “Soapy’s Folly.” (“Soapy” was the nickname for G. Mennen Williams who was Michigan’s Governor at the time.

The nickname “Soapy” came from his family’s connection to the Mennen toiletries company, founded by his grandfather, Gerhard H. Mennen.)

We need to prepare ourselves for whatever life may throw at us. This life is a preparation for the life to come. Our here determines our hereafter.

We live in years and cannot imagine what eternity will be like. Consider the testimony of Apostle Paul.

“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed to us” (Romans 8:18).

There are lessons to be learned from the Noah story (Genesis 6:9-9:17). The story of Noah is about God giving humanity another opportunity to live right. The purpose of an Ark (ship) is to provide protection and safety.

The ancient Hebrew people considered the Ark of the Covenant as representing the presence of God among them.

Maybe we should build an Ark of love and compassion to protect us from misunderstanding.

Perhaps we need to build an Ark of patience for situations that are beyond our control; or an Ark of faith that God will see us through.

In a sense, Jesus Christ is our Ark.

Prayer: Dear Lord, shelter us in the ark of Your everlasting love. In Your strong name we pray. Amen.

8/22/1935 - 4/19/2020 • PLAINWELL, MI On Sunday April 19, 2020, God called home Dan James Albertson, 84 years old, of Plainwell MI. He was the BEST Dad, Husband, Grandpa and friend anyone could ask for. Dan was the salt of the earth, gritty and resilient. His heart laid in the land. Dan spent his lifetime farming alongside his wife Bonnie Albertson of sixty-three years on their farm called Dandy Acres, in Plainwell MI. Together they raised three children, Mark Albertson (Kathryn Verploegh) of Rockford MI, Brian Albertson of Pahrump NV and Dana Albertson (Dave Stowell) of Plainwell MI. He was proud of his five grandchildren, Michelle (Albertson) Petrusma, Garrett Albertson, Dan Stowell, Jeremy Albertson, Drew Stowell, and 3 great grandchildren. Dan loved farming and watching things grow. He loved his family and friends. He loved the outdoors. He loved his hunting trips to the Upper Peninsula in Victoria MI with the guys. He loved boating the Great Lakes with his wife by his side on his boat, The Bullship. He loved grooming the hills at Timber Ridge Ski Area in Gobles, MI, and making snow for the skiers. He worked there for 30 years while mother earth was dormant for the winter. He was once referred to in a Kalamazoo Gazette article as "The original snowman"! He was inducted into the Farmers Hall of Fame in 2008. He enjoyed the weekly "boy's night" gatherings with the crew! He enjoyed life and loved a gathering of friends more than most. If ever there was someone in need of a hand, Dan was there to help in anyway. Dan was a fun, adventurous man who lived life with an adventure around every corner, his wife, family or friends by his side. His stories of his adventures, his sense of humor, his laughter from down deep inside his soul, the twinkle that gleamed in his eyes and that wide devilish grin will be forever missed by all that knew him. BUT…. those are the things that we will love and remember about our fierce leader of the Albertson family. Dan's wishes were to be cremated and his remains be returned to his farm, Dandy Acres. A celebration of Dan's Life or "one last party" as he put it, will be hosted at his farm at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, c/o the funeral home.

Clare passed away Saturday, April 25, 2020 at the Wings Home in Allegan.

He was born September 7, 1949 in Plainwell, the son of Henry and Edith (Lowery) Predum. Clare was a lifelong resident of the area and worked his whole life in retail. He loved visiting with his family and friends. He also enjoyed playing bingo and cards, bowling, gardening and keeping his lawn like a golf course at all times. On September 12, 1992 in Lyons, he married Beverly Janke who survives. Together they enjoyed traveling and taking vacations. Also surviving are his siblings, Treva Schoneboom, Roland Predum, Mike Predum and Bonnie Putman along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Adelia McNutt, Alvin Predum, Joe Predum, Olive “Becky” Pantale and Russ Predum. A private family funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 with Pastor David Reed officiating.

Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell.

AGE 70 • OTSEGO, MI Diane passed away April 25, 2020. She was born December 29, 1949 in Kalamazoo to the late Walter Will Sr. and Rosamonde June (Ames) Rice. Diane was known to be selfless, always willing to do anything for anyone. Though she was sweet, she was also stubborn, and you did not want to cross her. She spent many years camping with her family at Silver Lake. She enjoyed knitting, especially Christmas ornaments for her family and friends, and jigsaw puzzles. She was a huge fan of Coca-Cola and an all-around animal lover. Diane’s greatest joy came from her daughter, Liz, and granddaughter, Charlotte. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Walter Will Rice, Jr. in 1969, Bruce Allen Rice in 2015, and Ronald Alan Rice in 2015; nephew, Nicholas Rice in 2018; and sister-in-law, Patricia Rice in 2020. She is survived by her daughter, Liz (James Guerin) Rice; granddaughter, Charlotte; brother, David Rice, Sr.; sister, Ruth (Wayne) Pushie; sistersin-law, Marianne Rice and Mary Traxler; as well as many nieces and nephews. In accordance with Diane’s wishes, cremation will take place. A gathering of family and friends will occur later once it is deemed safe to do so. Memorial donations may be made to any local animal shelter of one’s choice.

AGE 69 • PLAINWELL, MI LeRoy passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at Allegan County Medical Care Community after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. He was born October 20, 1950 in Berwyn, Illinois, the son of LeRoy and Ruth (Gannon) DeMar. LeRoy was a 1968 Otsego High School graduate. He loved antique cars, collecting sports cards and loved his pets. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and as a young man had tried out for the team. He especially liked following Ryan Sandburg. Surviving are his sisters, Blanche (Stephen) Thorson and Rose Marie Price; nieces Elyse Rodrigues, Shanna McConnell and Sandra Price; nephews, Phillip Bartholomew and Henry Bartholomew; great-niece, Libby Rodrigues and great-nephews, Jack Bartholomew and Jacob Bartholomew. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jeannine Bartholomew. A private funeral service will be held on Friday, May 1, 2020 with Rev. Fr. Simon Manjooran officiating. Michael J. PREDUM AGE 79 • PLAINWELL, MI

Mike passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born February 15, 1941 in Plainwell, the son of Henry and Edith (Lowry) Predum. Mike proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam.

For many years he had owned and operated a carpentry business and had done power coating and wood laminating for DVI until his retirement. Mike enjoyed mushroom hunting, fishing and hunting. He was a kind and loving father and was willing to help anyone in need. Mike was an active member of the Otsego American Legion Post #84. In 1981 in Allegan he married Iva Grimm who survives. Also surviving are his children, Melissa Graiser of California, Mike Predum of Plainwell, Tony Charles of Traverse City and Tracy (James) Hulett of Gobles; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and siblings, Treva Schoneboom, Roland Predum and Bonnie Putman along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Adelia McNutt, Alvin Predum, Joe Predum, Olive “Becky” Pantale, Russ Predum and Clare Predum. Michael Miller brought 3D printing technology to Otsego classrooms more than five years ago and it has exploded. Courses increased across the district. Designing and computer science is a passion for Miller and he loves to dig into new projects to see what he can create. It only made sense to turn to 3D printing in this unprecedented time. “You want to help people who are helping people,” he says. There was a need and he could help fill it. He has four 3D printers at home, so when a friend in the healthcare industry asked about printing 3D masks, he started working. He’s donated about 50 masks to the Alamo Nursing home and more to other friends and family. Without school, he brought three other 3D printers to his home to get them done quicker.

The next project, ear guards, came from a friend, and Otsego parent, Barry Lafler. “If you’ve ever worn a mask, especially one taunt to the face, at the end of a 10-13 hour shift, you’re pulling it off so your ears aren’t burning,” he explains. Lafler is a nurse at Bronson Hospital. He saw that Miller was printing masks and sent him an article he saw about 3D-printed ear guards.

The next day, Miller brought over 160 of them. “I took them into work and people were just so happy,” Lafler said, “I went around the floor and everyone I came across wanted one.”

After the first round, Miller added his laser cutter to the project, etching out the word “HERO” in the back of the ear guards.

“These people are out there risking their life every day. Those are the heroes. You just want to help somebody,” Miller says.

Miller made about 300 ear guards, 70 masks and is working on a specific mask project now. “They’re starting to catch up with the PPE, where before they weren’t sure what they were going to get so we were working on those,” Miller explains.

But he says if there’s a need again, he’ll do what he can.

Teachers, Students Back Together for Distance Learning It’s a new way of teaching and learning, but teachers and students are still finding a way to connect while apart. Otsego launched its Continuity of Learning Plan April 20, which kicked off six weeks of learning. Students are learning either through online instruction or learning packets.

While the actual school day is structured to be much shorter, Otsego’s staff are creating as much normalcy as possible in their connections with kids. Even at a distance, they are sending videos to the kids so they can see each other, scheduling office hours for kids who need help or have questions, and exploring new tools for kids to also create videos to stay connected. They are taking part in the usual celebrations, like Earth Day projects, singing happy birthday to their classmates and sharing “good things”.

Sharing good things is an activity that takes place across the district for Capturing Kids Hearts. The priority for distance learning at OPS is the social-emotional well-being of our students. We want to keep them engaged in learning, connected to their teacher and classroom and know they are loved.

Teachers are creating assignments that are conducive to being at home, like household chores, outside learning (animal studies), and helping to cook. There are special stories from every teacher, student and classroom during this unprecedented learning time.

Week of June 15 & Week of Oct. 5, 2020 Pick-up will begin Monday at 7:00 AM

Please do not put refuse out before 3:00 pm the Sunday prior!

Requirements for RUBBISH PICK-UP

1. All residents living on private roads must have the trash placed at the end of the road in a pile.

2. Refuse must be limited to what two men can lift.

3. Barrels with both ends cannot be picked up; land fills will not accept them.

4. All barrels, including barrels with trash in them, will be taken.

Any barrel or container too heavy for two men to pick up will not be taken.

5. Trash piles should be located within easy reach from the road, not 20 to 30 feet, for the convenience of the trash haulers.

6. All objects must be bagged or put in containers that will be picked up. No loose materials will be picked up.

7. Containers must be left at curbside and they will not be returned.

8. Old appliances will be picked up if they can be lifted by two men. No refrigerators, freezers or air conditioners unless refrigerants are removed by a professional and tagged.

Remember... Appliances can be recycled.

9. NO YARD WASTE! 10. NO BUILDING MATERIALS WILL BE PICKED UP 11. NO TIRES WILL BE PICKED UP 12. NO GARBAGE or container for food products will be picked up.

13. NO ROCKS, SAND, CONCRETE, RUBBLE OR DEAD ANIMALS will be picked up.

14. No motor oil or containers with liquids such as oil based and latex paint. Cans with dried paint are acceptable if lids are removed.

15. No call backs will be made if refuse is placed after the truck has serviced your house.

16. Complaints will be verified (field checked) by Township personnel and checked against driver’s log.

17. Any item not picked up because of the above reasons must be taken off the curbside and stored out of sight by noon of the day following each pick-up.

18. If your rubbish has not been picked up by Thursday 9:00 am, please call the Township Office, (269)694-9434.
