When we think of fathers we think of such qualities as provider, protector and encourager.

Blessed are we whose fathers were all of these things and more.

Fun Theme Nights!

I think the one characteristic that stands out for me is the word example (role model). Usually this is not realized until later in life. This brings to mind the well - known words of Mark Twain:

“When I was a boy of l4, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astounded at how much the old man had learned in seven years.”

In reflecting back, my father (who would have been l00 this year) taught by example such things as work, responsibility, leadership, honesty and how to get along with people. Among other things, he taught me how to ride a bike, drive a car, start a business, open a savings account, preach a sermon and face life with a smile. Yet the one thing that stands out the most is that my father knew God. Examples of faithful fathers in the Bible: • Noah “walked with God” (Genesis 6:9) • Abraham was the Father of a great Nation (Genesis 12:1-3) • Moses was the faithful law giver (Exodus 20) • King David was a man after God’s own heart (I Samuel l3:14)

They were all very human. Noah got drunk.

Abraham deceived Pharaoh and quarreled with his nephew Lot over a property issue. Moses had a problem with anger and David had a problem with lust. Yet all of them found redemption and God used them in mighty ways.

The bride & groom are both graduates of Martin High School and Grand Valley State University. Aleshia is employed as a teacher at Martin Public Schools. Matt is employed as an advertising consultant at the Community Shoppers Guide in Otsego.

The newlyweds went on a roadtrip out east for their honeymoon.

U.S. Air Force Airman Alec R. Owen graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

AGE 87 – PLAINWELL, MI Betty passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Vicinia Gardens in Otsego. She was born June 17, 1929 in Ionia, Michigan, the daughter of Norman and Gladys (Kilts) Bennett. For many years Betty was a beautician until her retirement in 1977. She was an avid crafter and in her spare time enjoyed bowling and snowmobiling. On May 17, 1947, in Kalamazoo, she married Everett Stoner and had recently celebrated their 70th anniversary. Surviving are her husband, Everett; children, Janice Double and Steve (Penny) Stoner both of Plainwell; 4 grandchildren, Jamy Bowman, Jerry Bowe and her children, Morgan, Brea and CJ, Kasey Stroud and her children, Aiden and Audrey and Gabrial Stoner and his children, Evan and Blake along with her sister, Joyce (Joe) Catolica. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Genniveve, Phyllis, Gloria, Joan, Carl and Robert. Friends may visit with Betty’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Friday, June 16, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home - Otsego until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M. with Celebrant, Bill Rose officiating.

Burial will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, June 20, 2017. Contributions in memory of Betty may be made to Great Lakes Caring Hospice.

Anne-Marie HENRY AGE 58 – OTSEGO, MI

Anne-Marie passed away Friday, June 9, 2017 at Bronson Hospital. She was born May 30, 1959 in Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Henri and Anita (Lavoie) Touchette. Along with her family, Anne-Marie had owned and operated Chadwicks Kwagama Lake Lodge in Canada for many years. She was an accomplished chef and loved to cook. In her spare time she enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, gardening and dancing. On August 30, 1984 she married Patrick Henry who survives. Also surviving are her son, Chad Henry of Otsego; step-children, Jarred Henry of Iroquois Falls, ON and Patricia Dawn (Eric) Zior of Matheson, ON; 3 grandchildren and siblings, Emile (Michelle) Touchette, Adrien (Micheline) Touchette, Gerry Touchette, Marcel (Diane) Touchette, Carolle (Gary) Touchette-Manzo.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Gabriel Touchette, Nicole Wilson and Aline Kirk. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Her ashes will be interred at her lodge in Ontario. Anne-Marie will be missed dearly by her family and friends as well as many past customers and guests at the lodge. Contributions in memory of Anne-Marie may be made to the West Michigan Cancer Center.

Freda passed away Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the Wings Home in Allegan. She was born October 28,1938 in Climax, the daughter of Frederick and Maxine (Goulette) Caffrey.

Freda was a 1956 Otsego High School graduated and lifelong resident of the area. For 26 years she had worked at Parker Hannifin until her retirement. In her spare time she enjoyed taking rides in the country, working puzzles, watching movies, going out to eat, and playing computer games. In 1990 she married Albert Allison who passed away in 1999. Surviving are her children, Taffy, Steve, Mike, Tim, Keith Town and Karen Myers; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren and her siblings, Fred Caffrey Jr., George Rogers and Mike Caffrey. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Robert Caffrey and Betty Collick. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery.
