Betty was a graduate of Plainwell High School She was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed babysitting and taking care of her family Betty was very proud to knit hats and mittens for the area school children for Brenda Powers ministry On April 26, 1941, in Ohio, she married Jack Martin who passed away in 1999 After her husband retired in 1979, they moved to the Florida Keys for 3 years and then to Georgia before returning to the area Surviving are her children, Dick (Theresa) Martin of Georgia, Sue (Dick) VanDerhoff of Kalamazoo and Don (Lisa) Martin of Kalamazoo; 18 grandchildren; many great grandchildren and a few great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; children, Merry Hughes and Jack Martin; sisters, Margaret Filkins, Pauline Corradini and Burtie Deneau and her brother, Al Rice According to her wishes cremation has taken place A celebration of Betty’s life is planned for Wednesday, July 10, 2024, from 2 to 4 P M at the Bellflower, 4700 W D Ave , Kalamazoo Contributions in memory of Betty may be made to the Martin Lions Club or Christian Neighbors

The word “therefore” in the Bible is an important word meaning “for that reason” or “consequently ” The word usually appears at the end of a section as a summary statement For example, the above verse comes near the end of a segment on giving to the needy prayer fasting and storing up treasures in Heaven The question is, how can we live in our kind of world without worrying? The truth is worry is a necessary part of our God-given emotional makeup A certain amount of worry helps us cope with the issues of daily living A little parental worry can make us better parents A little worry about our health can make for healthy living A little worry about road conditions can make us better drivers A little worry about finances, can make us better managers (stewards) of our money

In the Sermon on the Mount, when Jesus talks says, “Do not be anxious” (Matthew 6:25), He is not talking about normal worry He is talking about the kind of worry that overwhelms our thinking, depletes our energy and leaves us feeling totally devastated

After his retirement he continued teaching at the Otsego Baptist Academy His commitment to education and the well-being of his students left a lasting impact on the community Dave was an avid Detroit Tigers and U of M Football fan He coached softball and girls’ basketball at Gobles Schools for many years In his free time, he enjoyed swimming, playing cards and traveling Most of all Dave loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren On May 31, 1974, in Dorr, he married Susan Moyers, and they recently celebrated their 50th anniversary Also surviving are his children, Scott Fleser of Kalamazoo and Stacy Fleser of California; 4 grandchildren, Travis, Ben (Lauren), Andrew and Janella; 5 great-grandchildren, Emmaleigh, Axel, Avery, Alaia and Melody; sister, Denise (Kraig) Stephenson along with several nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Dennis and Douglas Fleser

Shirley passed away on January 25, 2024 in Winter Haven, FL She was born March 26, 1945 in Plainwell, MI Shirley married David (“Giz”) Giesbrecht on August 20, 1966 and had two children: Michelle Del Rey of Spring, TX and William Todd Giesbrecht of Magnolia, TX Shirley graduated from Delton High School in 1963 She worked at Pipp Community Hospital for 35 years, working her way up from Ward Clerk to Distribution Manager She enjoyed playing golf, bowling, bingo and playing games with the grandkids She loved to watch her grandsons play football Shirley also loved knitting and crocheting and made afghans for many people Every fall she looked forward to going to Florida for the winter She is survived by her husband, children and grandsons: Jonathan Del Ray, Benjamin Del Rey, Cameron Del Rey and Mason Giesbrecht, all of TX; one sister, Marilyn Fugate; and many nieces and nephews Shirley is preceded in death by her father, Ben Madden; her mother, Betty and brothers, Larry and John There will be a memorial service at Orangeville Baptist Church on July 13 at 11am, luncheon to follow In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of Michigan

Although we are often hard on Judas, maybe we have more in common with him than we realize I know I do Judas had selective hearing Jesus repeatedly told Judas that he was going to suffer and die to initiate a new kingdom not of this world But Judas wouldn’t hear it Why? Because he wanted Jesus to start a political kingdom in which the Jews would be on top of the world My wife has selective hearing; she says I do too one time she was in target looking at sofa pillows I said, “Hon, we already have 30 pillows on our sofa (preacher exaggeration) I can’t even find a place to sit without fighting through the posse of pillows Plus we need to save money for my fishing trip She must not have heard me, because she dropped the pillow in the cart with a smile Selective hearing!

In our desire to be in control like Judas, we sometimes have selective hearing with god and his word For example, when we find ourselves holding onto bitter unforgiveness, we might be tempted to skim or skip what Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount about loving our enemies and asking god to forgive our debtors as we forgive our debtors Selective hearing!

I sometimes trust more in my plan for god than god s plan for me What I m coming to realize is that there is great freedom in surrendering my control to the loving will of god for me truth is, god s plan for my life is better
