“Royalty in Our Veins” “For you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God …” I Peter 2:9

There is a certain fascination with royalty. One recent example is the Diamond Jubilee celebration of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II. Her accession to the throne came at the young age of 26 with the untimely death of her father, King George VI on February 6, l952. Her coronation was held on June 2, l953 in Westminster Abbey, London. And for the first time, the ceremony was broadcast on television. Some of us remember watching her coronation on our black and white television sets at a time when television was in its infancy. I have some words of faith and hope for all believers in Jesus Christ. Royalty runs in our veins. Jesus said, “… the kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21). Inasmuch as we allow Christ to live in us, it can be said the kingdom of God dwells in us. We are part of that royal priesthood Peter talked about in I Peter 2:9. They were words of encouragement for believers under Roman persecution. It was a reminder that believers in Christ are citizens of two worlds, heaven and earth (I Peter 2:11). If we truly believe we are children of royalty, how can we ever suffer from low self-esteem? As royal priests, we are called to represent Christ to others … to love as Christ loves … to forgive as Christ forgives … to serve others in His holy and royal name. Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to remember that with privilege comes responsibility. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Peace to you and please join us for worship this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived.

The Little Miss Allegan Co. Pageant is seeking contestants ages 7-12 from Allegan, Barry, Kent, Kalamazoo, Van Buren, Ottawa, St. Joe, Cass and Berrien Counties.

Contestants will participate in a 5 minute private interview with the judges prior to the pageant. Pageant will include party wear, a 1-2 minute live talent presentation and an on-stage question. Winner receives a crown, sash and an educational scholarship to be used toward furthering her talent education. Winner will also have the opportunity to represent The Miss Allegan Co. Scholarship Program at the Little Miss Michigan Pageant in Muskegon on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012 A non-refundable donation of $60.00 to the Miss Allegan County Scholarship Program is required to enter. Obituaries Norma BENTLEY AGE 91 - OTSEGO

Norma passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2012 in Plainwell. Norma was born November 9, 1920 to Motley and Mary (Rubert) Tefft in Otsego on the family farm. Norma graduated from Otsego High School in 1937 then worked at Mol’s Restaurant and was a bookkeeper at Otsego Sanitary Milk. Norma was a life member of the Otsego VFW Post 3030. She married Lyle Bentley and had two sons, Russell and Gerald ‘Gery’ Bentley. They loved fishing and hunting together. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Russell II (Jacque), Reneé (Curtis) Adams both of AZ; Brandy (Phil) Goodwin of Otsego, G.R. (Sarah) of Kalamazoo and Brittany of Otsego; 5 great-grandchildren, Donovan, Aidan and Madeline Goodwin and Russell III and Anastasia Bentley; step-son, Donald (Gwen) of Allegan; 5 step-grandchildren and spouses, and several great-grand and great great grandchildren and family. She was preceded in death by her husband Lyle in 1965, an infant brother Howard Tefft, son Russell in 2004, 2 sisters, Lois VanderMeer and Bertine Warner and a brother, Motley Tefft. Douglas passed away Saturday, June 16, 2012 in Kalamazoo. Doug was born November 16, 1950 in Allegan , MI the son of Earl and Marjorie (Connor) Garton. He had served in the US Army during the Viet Nam War. He lived in California for 30 years and worked as a commercial electrician and was a member of the IBEW Local. He enjoyed traveling. Doug is survived by his sisters, Gloria Wise of Portage, Colleen (Randy) Loll of Plainwell and Claudette (Christopher) Spontelli of PA ; 4 nephews and 2 nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents. Cremation has taken place. Private family services are scheduled. Jim passed away Thursday, June 21, 2012, in Kalamazoo. Mr. Watson was born November 2, 1937 in Hillsdale to Roy and Ruth (Camp) Watson and was raised by Donald and Martha VerHage. For 30 years he was employed as a truck driver, first with Phil McVean Trucking in Martin and then with Menasha Corp. in Otsego. Jim was an avid Tigers fan. On August 15, 1958 in Watson Corners he was married to Yvonne Brooks, who survives. Also surviving are three children, Randy (Sharon) Watson of Allegan, Dawn (Kevin) Brown of Fountain Hills, AZ and Kim (Bill) Rohr of Otsego; 8 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; a sister, Hazel; three half-sisters, Shirley, Mary Lou and Rosalee; brothers, Isaac VerHage, Donald VerHage and Duane VerHage; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Ruth Watson and Donald and Martha VerHage; brothers, Herbert Watson and Lawrence VerHage; and sisters, Charlotte and Ann. Friends may meet with Jim’s family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services will be held Saturday, June 23 at 1:00 PM, Pastor Ray Brown officiating. Lee passed away Saturday, June 16, 2012 in Kalamazoo. Lee was born November 4, 1930 in Port Sanilac, MI the son of Howard and Myrtle (Pohzehl) Erbe. Following high school Lee enlisted in the Army and spent 3 years in Germany during the Korean War. Following his time in the service he met and married Sylvia (McLane) on May 15, 1954 in Sandusky, MI. Lee began working for International Harvester out of Saginaw and had opportunities in different states, moving up the ranks until he purchased his own truck dealership in IL in 1967. He sold his dealership in the early 1970’s so that he and his family could move back to Michigan. In Michigan Lee continued working with IH until 1980 when he began working in sales permitting for Natural Gas Exploration until his retirement in 1990. Following retirement he continued to stay busy volunteering to help people in need. Lee and Sylvia spent winters in Lake Travis, TX. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Elks and was a faithful attender of the First Congregational Church of Otsego. Lee enjoyed golfing, playing cards, and his morning coffee with his buddies. He loved spending time with his friends but most of all his family. Once he made a friend it was important to Lee to keep in touch no matter where they lived. Surviving are his wife Sylvia; his children, Allyson (Ian) Davidson of TX, David (Melisa) of TX, Scott Erbe and Paul (Heather) Erbe both of Kalamazoo; 8 grandchildren, Joshua, Jonah, Collin, Alexandra, Sebastian, Atticus, Ethan and Evan. Reta M. POUNTAIN AGE 85 - ALLEGAN

Reta passed away Sunday, June 17, 2012 in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Pountain was born August 6, 1926 in Manton, Michigan to Roy and Edith (Porter) Brown. Reta grew up in New Buffalo, Michigan and then lived in Kalamazoo. For many years she was employed with Shakespeare Co. and later with the bakeries at W.M.U. and KCollege. In her leisure time she enjoyed knitting and crocheting. On May 5, 1950 in Kalamazoo she married Donald E. Pountain, who died in 2009. Also preceding her in death were her sisters, Bess Mundt and Dorothy Young; and her brother, Leo Brown. Surviving are two sons, Donald B. (Gaile) Pountain of Allegan and Darryl (Louise) Pountain of Mattawan; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Contributions in memory of Reta may be made to the American Cancer Society.
