This handsome boy has been at the shelter since July 10th of last year, waiting patiently for his forever family to come. Ozzie is wondering if YOU could be that family. He loves to play and go for walks, rides well in the car and after having fun, he will relax next to you for belly rubs. Ozzie originally did well with other dogs when he came to the shelter, but as he is now approaching his oneyear anniversary of being with us, he has started to struggle. So, he currently needs a home without other dogs. But the behavioral staff at the shelter thinks once he gets settled into a home and has time to decompress, that he will be able to have dog friends again. Ozzie will need a catfree home. Ozzie does well with dog-savvy kids 10 years and up as he can be a little over excited at first, but a lot of that stems from the stress of having to live in a kennel environment for such a long time. Once in a home with some consistency and positive reinforcement he would do fine with younger children. Ozzie knows a handful of basic commands and after his initial excitement of being out he walks fairly well on a leash. REFLECTION: Our freedom from the death penalty for our sins is not free. It cost Jesus Christ His life.

For those of us who accept Christ this is not so. Let’s not cower in fear as people try to take our freedom in Christ away. Have you noticed that Christians are needing to stand strong to keep the freedom to express our beliefs? We need to continue to be bold about what we believe! We should never treat our freedom lightly, nor take it for granted. Christ died so we might live with the precious gift of eternal life. This invaluable blessing needs defending and it is our responsibility to do so. As more and more antagonists raise up against us we need not be fearful. We need to see this as an opportunity to shine the light of God’s love.

PRAYER TIME: Lord Jesus, keep us safe from reprisals against our faith communities. Protect us from those who want to take away our freedom from the bondage of darkness. We take refuge in You, for You are good and holy as our Mediator. Praise You Lord Jesus, for every good thing comes from You! In Jesus’ name. Amen.

What are your top ten Bible verses? While it is hard to pick out just ten, I am going to share with you my top ten verses over the next 10 weeks and begin with one many of us learned in our childhood.

By definition, Polaris (The North Star) is the brightest star in the constellation known as the Little Dipper. It is so-called because of the special position it occupies relative to the Earth’s axis. It is the only bright star whose position relative to a rotating Earth does not change.

John 3:16 has been called the “North Star” of Christianity. Everything in the Bible points to it.

The Old Testament prophesies Jesus’ birth. The New Testament proclaims it. It is the Christian faith in a nutshell. Let’s take a closer look.

God’s Love - “For God so loved the world …

God’s love for us is sacrificial, unconditional, unlimited, unmerited and eternal. Nothing can separate us from the love of God (Romans 8:38, 39).

God’s Gift - That he gave His one and only Son… The Scripture says “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life” (I John 5:12). Life is in the Son. “To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).

God’s Promise - That whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” Eternal life is the gift of a God who loved us and gave Himself for us. Accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord gives us a life of meaning and purpose in this life (John 10:10) and in the life to come.

Prayer: Dear Lord, please forgive my sins and enter into my life right now. In Your strong name.

Celebration of life

Mary passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 surrounded by her loving family. Born May 4, 1943 in Otsego, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late George and Marian (VanHouten) Spencer. Mary graduated from Martin High School in 1961. She married the love of her life, Stewart, in 1964. Mary worked as a secretary for TruHeat for four years and then Delano Service for over 30 years where she eventually became their customer service manager, a job that was perfect for her warm, helpful and caring personality. She was a special woman who possessed a great personality, infectious smile and was known for her wonderful laugh. She had a love for serving others as was evidenced by her devotion to her husband and family, always being there to take care of her parents, her daughter and grandchildren. Mary enjoyed camping with her husband, and she was an excellent baker. Later in life she volunteered many hours at Watson Bible Church and Wings of Hope Hospice. Mary was a happy soul.

Her sensitive and giving nature brought joy to those who were blessed to meet her. The love she shared over the years leaves behind beautiful memories to be cherished.

Mary is survived by her husband, Stewart Vander Vere; her daughter, Pamela (Marc) VanderVere-Carozza; and three grandchildren, Mariel Carozza, Becky Carozza and Amber Carozza; and her brother-in-law, Ken Kinsey.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Joanne Kinsey. Per her wishes, cremation has taken place. Wanda “Punky” Arlene SHERIDAN AGE 85 - ALLEGAN, MI

Wanda passed away suddenly at Allegan County Medical Care Community on June 10, 2022.

After 85 years, we no longer have the pleasure of her presence. Wanda was born in Allegan, Michigan to her parents Frank and Marjorie Youtzy on September 8, 1936. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Cecil, brother Bill, and ex-husband Lee Sheridan. Her living relatives are her sister Dawn Forney; three children: Debra (Ron) Sweet, Curtis (Shannon) Sheridan, and Dottie Sowle; grandchildren: Leon Sheridan, Wyatt Sowle, and Quinn Sheridan; along with many nieces and nephews, and her best friend Becky Halloran.

Wanda went to Allegan High School. She worked at Freedland’s in Allegan, Michigan sewing for many years.

Also in her younger years she worked at the dog kennels in Allegan. She loved roller skating. Her and her brother Cecil competed in many competitions, winning lots of awards. She also gave skating lessons. She met Lee Sheridan, whom she married, and had 3 children. Wanda was a stay at home mom, along with working on the farm and helping Lee whenever she could. They raised and sold horses. She also barrel raced and helped put on shows at the farm. Once a year she would help with the big cattle drive. Lee and Wanda originally started the horse races along with barrel racing at the Allegan County Fair. This is where she met her best friend Becky Halloran. They continued promoting the sport for many years. Lee and Wanda started a riding stable in Saugatuck, Michigan, where they rented horses for guided rides on the shores of Lake Michigan. Wanda would vacation every year the week of the Allegan County Fair. She camped in the same spot for many years. She loved the fair. She worked at the deli at Kmart for several years. She never re-married. Wanda loved fishing, camping, horse shows, and crafts. She loved watching her grandchildren in sports. Later in life she moved in with her parents and cared for them. At her request, cremation has taken place and no service will be held.

Gary passed away unexpectedly, Saturday, June 18, 2022 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was born one minute after his twin brother, Cary, on December 10, 1970 in Kalamazoo, the son of Leonard and Mary (Mannon) Curtiss. Gary was a 1989 Otsego High School graduate and worked for Edustaff as a food truck driver for Plainwell Schools. In his free time Gary enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting and spending time boating on the lakes. He liked working on small engines and telling a good story. Gary was an animal lover, especially dogs and had adopted many over the years.

Gary had one BIG personality, a big heart and has never met a stranger. He was the life of the party, loved to talk and be loud, was opinionated and so much fun to be around. His booming voice, his awesome smile and his laugh will be remembered by all of us. On May 11, 2008 at their home in Otsego, he married Susie Welch who survives. Also surviving are his step-son, John Grasser; his father, Leonard Curtiss of Otsego; siblings, Randy (Carrie Ann) Curtiss of Otsego, Rick (Teressa) Curtiss of Allegan and twin brother, Cary (Nickie) Curtiss of Plainwell; several nieces and nephews and 3 great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Curtiss.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Gary’s life will be held from 1-4 PM, Sunday, July 24, 2022, at the Scout House in Otsego. Contributions in memory of Gary may be made to your local dog rescue.

Wayne A. CURTISS AGE 86 - OTSEGO, MI

Wayne passed away June 16, 2022 at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born April 1, 1936, in Plainwell, the son of Ned and Dorothy (Thompson) Curtiss. For many years Wayne worked as a property manager. In his free time he enjoyed studying history and gardening. Surviving are his daughter, Carla (Kim) Stellrecht; 2 grandchildren, Chae and Brynn Stellrecht; sister, Marilyn DeYoung along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Mark Curtiss.

According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Contributions in memory of Wayne may be made to the Special Olympics.

William JONES

AGE 86 - KALAMAZOO, MI William passed away at 86 years old at an adult care facility in Pontiac, MI. Bill is the son of Lucille and Woodrow Jones. He graduated from Otsego High School in 1955. Bill lived in Kalamazoo, working in sheet metal for over forty years. He is survived by son Kieth, son-in-law Jim Wisely, sister Barbara (Bill) Rose, brother Norman and four grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Shirley, daughter Angila and two nephews.

In accordance with Bill's wishes, there will be no memorial service.

Otsego Main Street is a community-supported and volunteer-driven organization for people from all walks of life who are working together to revitalize our downtown. We are united in our efforts to build a special place that future generations will be proud to call their own. We share a deep-rooted love for Otsego, an affection for its history, and a passion for creating a fun, economically vibrant and visually compelling downtown at the heart of this place we call home!

DOWNTOWN VIBRANCY PROJECT

Gus Macker 3x3 Basketball Tournament will return to Otsego August 27-28. Gus Macker is our largest fundraiser and helps fund our community programming, as well as packing many of our downtown eateries and bringing thousands of visitors to downtown Otsego! Registration is open at macker.com/local/Otsego-mi!

Otsego Main Street received a 2022 Vibrancy Grant from the MEDC to activate previously unutilized and underutilized space in and near downtown Otsego. This grant will support a variety of mini projects coordinated by the City of Otsego and our volunteer-led teams. These projects include:

• The construction of a pocket park near the Otsego Historical Museum, including permanent concrete cornhole, ladder toss, and bench seating for players and spectators

These free events are brought to you by a partnership between The City of Otsego and Otsego Public Schools. All of these projects will be completed this summer, and we can’t wait!

There is plenty of change coming to Otsego Main Street. As many have heard, budget concerns outside of the City’s control has forced their hand, and the Otsego Main Street program will no longer receive funding in the future. Luckily, we have an amazing board and dedicated volunteers, and we are confident that we will continue to offer the community programming that residents have come to expect in partnership with the City and other community partners. As part of this transition, Otsego Main Street will be embracing a new name and brand: Together Otsego Prospers, or TOP. The new TOP Riverfront Pavilion not only carries the Together Otsego Prospers name, but is proof of what Main Street and our community has accomplished when we’ve worked together. So, while we mourn the end of Otsego Main Street, we are looking forward to new opportunities, and welcome all who are interested in seeing Otsego flourish to reach out for ways to get involved!

LOCAL ARTISTS – JOIN OTSEGO ARTS!

One of our volunteer-led teams, Otsego Arts, has quickly expanded their list of events, and wants to welcome all local artists (and supporters of the arts!) to join them in their work to lift up the arts community in Otsego. Otsego Arts supports the Art Garden, and has planned events such as The Art Thing at the Creative Arts Festival, the Otsego Artisan Market, Plein Air Painting, and more! All are welcome who are willing to lend a hand in bringing new, fun, and creative arts programming to Otsego that beautifies our community and engages with residents.

The next meeting is July 19th at 6:30pm at the Otsego City Hall. Stop in or reach out in advance-they would love to have you!
