Everett R. “Ron” LYONS

James “Jim” YURCHAK

Ron passed away Saturday, May 28, 2022 in Kalamazoo, surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 16, 1933, in Kalamazoo, the son of Everett and Charlotte “Ruth” (Finley) Lyons. Ron graduated from Martin High School in 1952. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Ron worked at Hydreco, Pemco and for 24 years at Checker Motors until his retirement in 1996. He enjoyed 26 good years of retirement. He liked following Plainwell and Martin High School sports, especially soccer. Ron was a devoted NASCAR fan and loved building and flying model airplanes with his very good friend, Jim Hainen. Ron also enjoyed skeet and trap shooting and for 10 years was the president of the Gun River Trap and Skeet Club. On July 12, 1958 in Gobles, he married Nancy Hale who survives. Also surviving are his children, Kathy Lyons of Kalamazoo and Jeff Lyons of Plainwell; 3 grandchildren, Lacee (Steven Hatto) Lyons, Stephanie (Alex) Perry and Shane Lyons; 4 great-grandchildren, Calihan, Caine, Adrienne and Otto; siblings, Donna (Joe) Flegal and Linda Hobbs along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Lucy “Pete” Lyons; mother, Ruth Abrams; son, Rodney in 2012 and by his brother, Dewey Lyons. Friends may visit with Ron’s family from 4-7 PM, Sunday, June 5, 2022, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego and from 10:00 A.M., Monday, June 6, 2022, until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. Military Honors by Otsego VFW Post 3030. Contributions in memory of Ron may be made to the Otsego United Methodist Church or to the charity of your choice.

James (Jim) Yurchak passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 28, 2022 surrounded by family. Jim was the very definition of Family Man. His life here on earth was dedicated to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The legacy he created was centered around his faith and family. His dedication to the Lord was undeniable and showed through decades of service at the First Baptist Church in Plainwell. He served his family as their number one fan. His eager ear was always interested in hearing every detail of their lives. Born on October 23, 1932 in Streator, Illinois to Albert and Margaret (Yedinak) Yurchak, Jim learned at a young age about hard work and determination. Growing up in Gary, Indiana, his first job was on a paper route and later he worked at the Phillips 66 station where he first laid his eyes on the beautiful MaryEllen Hastings. After High School, Jim entered the Navy Reserve. When he was called to Active Duty in 1952 he was allowed a short furlough and travelled back to Indiana to quickly wed MaryEllen on October 30th, 1954. While in the Navy Jim worked in Internal Communications and attended Submarine School. He was eventually stationed upon the USS Tusk before being discharged in 1955. After the Navy, Jim worked for Illinois Bell. He built their home in Portage, IN after outgrowing their home in Aetna and eventually took a job for Michigan Bell which brought him and his family to Plainwell, purchasing their present home on B Ave in 1966. Jim and MaryEllen’s family continued to grow as they added Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren who kept them busy attending sports, concerts and events. Each and every grandchild truly believed that they were the favorite and Jim would never let them think otherwise. He is survived by his wife, MaryEllen, sister, Eleanor (Patrick) Dolan, children: Dianne (Doug) DeYoung, Bryan (Alaina) Yurchak, Ruth (Jim) Reis. Grandchildren: Mark (Rochelle) Howard, Jason (Kendra) DeYoung, Julie (Beau) Taylor, Troy (Raquel) Yurchak, Ashley (Bill) Beck, Jamie (Kevin) Maloney, Kody Yurchak, Daniel Yurchak, Logan (Kailey) Pickett, Elizabeth (Jake) Sawyer, Benjamin Yurchak. Many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Donald Yurchak and Marcella (Yurchak) Hyde and children, Douglas James and Bruce Thomas Yurchak and Kathryn (Yurchak) Pickett. Cremation has taken place. A military burial service will be at Ft. Custer National Cemetery on August 2, at 12 noon. Donations in his name may be made to Centrica Care Navigators (Hospice) of Kalamazoo.

AGE 68 - (Pine Lake) PLAINWELL, MI Ken died peacefully at home on May 19, 2022. He fought a courageous 20-year battle with multiple health & medical issues. Born in Kalamazoo, MI on March 20, 1954, to Ben & Norma Hoogendoorn, Ken was actually raised by his mother and her 2nd husband, Pat Craft. Ken always went by the name Ken Craft. At 18 years old, Ken legally changed his last name from Hoogendoorn to Craft. Ken attended school in Otsego, MI and went to Otsego High School until the middle of 10' grade. He always stayed in close contact with his classmates & friends from OHS Class of 1973 and enjoyed attending class reunions. After leaving high school, Ken worked for several businesses including Standard Gas Station, Jensen's Shoes & Clothing and E&B Shop. Ken began his final profession as an apprentice to become a Pipe Fitter with CL Mahoney. Ken was a very hard worker throughout his life and set a good example for his boys & grandsons. As with all of Ken's jobs & projects, if Ken was doing the work, you knew it was going to be done right. He was a proud Union Member of the Plumbers & Pipe Fitters Local 357 serving on numerous board positions, including President, for many years He continued to serve & volunteer his time with the Local 357, never missing a union meeting until he died. Ken worked on the Local 357 Credit Union Board for 30 years. Ken married Dawn Henderson on May 24, 1975. Together they raised 2 boys, Casey & Brook. When Casey became a 3rd generation Pipe Fitter to carry on the family trade and Brook became a Marine, you couldn't find a more proud father boasting about his sons. Ken & Dawn have lived on Pine Lake for 35 years. Ken loved Pine Lake, and he certainly savored his time on the lake watching fireworks, boating & fishing with his sons, grandsons, friends, & family. He took great pride in having his sons & grandsons grow up on Pine Lake. In his later years, Ken served on the Prairieville Township Board of Review. He spent his spare time relaxing on his lawn mower, working on hot rods, flipping houses with Dawn, surfing the internet auctions and marketplaces for his next deal, project or toy. You never knew what Ken was going to find and bring home. During his online searches, Ken found a lot in Mackinaw City, and spent the last couple of years building a small retreat for he and Dawn to get away and enjoy. Ken was a self-made man driven by his determination. personal effort, hard work, and supportive family. He loved to learn and was interested in new things. Ken shared his knowledge with friends & neighbors who would ask for his opinion and expertise on many projects through the years. He was always there when needed or just stopped by to check on your progress. Ken will be greatly missed by his family & friends. In true Ken style, he made arrangements some time ago to donate his body to the Western Michigan University Medical School of Science. It was Ken's wish that they find some answers and cures to help others that are suffering from similar medical conditions. In accordance with Ken's directive, there will be no services. He asks that you take whatever your donation would have been and spend it having a memorable time with your loved ones. Life is precious & short, sometimes you have to stop and take in the moment.

DEADLINE TO FILE JULY 26, 2022, 4:00 PM

Petition forms/packets are now available at the office of the City Clerk, City Hall, 117 E. Orleans St., for election to the Otsego City Commission. The City Election will be held Tuesday, November 8, 2022. Three Full-Term City Commission seats will be open for election this fall; and Two Partial-Terms (2 Years).

The two candidates receiving the highest number of votes for the Full-Term Seats will be elected to four-year terms and the third candidate will be elected to a two-year term. Partial Term Seats will be for two-years.

In order to qualify for the Office of City Commissioner, a candidate must be:

* A resident of the City for not less than one (1) year immediately preceding his or her election.

* A registered voter.

Nominations for office are determined by petition signed by not less than 40 registered voters of the City of Otsego. Petitions need to be submitted to the City Clerk's Office no later than Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at 4:00 p.m.

NOTICE OF A PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED 2022-2023 BUDGET

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that on June 20, 2022 at 5:45p.m., at the Hopkins Elementary School, Hopkins, Michigan the Board of Education of Hopkins Public Schools will hold a public hearing to consider the District’s proposed 2022–2023 budget.

The Board may not adopt its proposed 20222023 budget until after a public hearing. A copy of the proposed 2022-2023 budget, including the proposed property tax millage rate, is available for public inspection during normal business hours at 400 Clark Street, Hopkins, Michigan.

The property tax millage rate proposed to be levied to support the proposed budget will be a subject of the hearing.

This notice is given by order of the Board of Education.

ADOPTABLE Pets of the Week! ENRIQUE ...is the most handsome boy!

Enrique enjoys going on long walks and relaxing. He can be a bit reserved when meeting new people, but once he gets to know you he is a real sweetie! Enrique is a chill pup; friendly and enjoys being pet. Enrique is 3 years old and weighs approximately 56 pounds. He would love to be the only pet in the home, but he could potentially join a home with another dog. He seems to prefer neutral, easy going dogs (females the best). At this time, it is uncertain how Enrique would do in a home with cats. If you are interested in adopting Enrique, and your home includes cats, please be sure to include that information on your application. The shelter can then retest him and see how he behaves around cats. It is recommended that any children in the home are 10 years old and up.
