Amy MISNER

AGE 44 - LIVERMORE, CO (Formerly of Plainwell) Amy passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2019 from injuries sustained from a car accident in Colorado along with her close friend Cody Nozhackum.

She was born November 24, 1974 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Thomas and Jane (Haynes) Cole. Amy was a 1993 Martin High School graduate and had worked as a CNA in many area nursing homes. After raising her children she moved to Colorado and was working toward her paramedic license. She was a wildland firefighter which was her greatest career accomplishments. Amy had an adventurous spirit and a giving heart. She enjoyed traveling, wide open spaces and taking mission trips and helping the people on reservations. Amy was an animal lover and had taken in many dogs over the years, each one holding a special place in her heart. She had a deep faith and was a child of God. On December 23, 2005 at Trinity Baptist Church in Kalamazoo she married Neil Misner who survives. Also surviving are her children, Kate Elkins and Eric Misner; step-son, Killian; grandson, Grant Roberts; mother, Jane Cole; brothers, Troy (Tricia) Cole and Scott (Linda) Cole; grandmother, Sue Haynes; father-in-law, Jim Misner; mother-in-law, Terri Misner; best friend, Julie BushGray; Jennifer Aker, Nathan Rackley and Ashley Strobel who were like children to Amy; along with several special aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Tom Cole, grandmother, Dorothy Nunnery and grandfathers, Ike Haynes and Willis Allen. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of Amy’s life was held Thursday, June 6, 2019, at the Voyage Church in Kalamazoo. Contributions in memory of Amy may be made to Children’s Cancer Research.

Berle E. FINKEY

AGE 92 - KALAMAZOO, MI Berle passed away Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Friendship Village in Kalamazoo.

He was born July 14, 1926 in Augusta, the son of Lloyd and Pearl Finkey. Berle spent his childhood in Augusta and Delton with his brother, Louis and sister, Margaret. He graduated from Delton High School in 1946 and then served in the U.S. Army during WWII as military police in New York City. For 32 years he had worked for Michigan Bell Telephone Company until his retirement. In his free time Berle enjoyed taking bus trips, gardening and working on his cars.

Surviving are his son, Dale Finkey; granddaughter, Elizabeth Finkey, niece, Sherrie (Matt) Storbeck and nephews, Jeff, Mike and Doug. In 1989 he married Florence Irene (Blue) Snow who also survives along with her son, Paul (Theresa) Snow; grandchildren; Nathan (Kallin) Snow, Caitlin (Justin) Nolan and Jared (Stephanie) Snow. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Lloyd (Cathy) Finkey; siblings, Louis Finkey and Margaret (Larry) French; first wife, Jean; step-son, Gordon Snow and special cousin, Priscilla Bevans. Friends he remembered and wished to thank are James Platt and James Yerchek who had worked with Berle at Michigan Bell Telephone Company; friends Dale Blanchard and Karen Baker. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held Thursday, June 6, 2019 at the Winkel Funeral Home - Otsego with Pastor Darin Youngs officiating. Burial of ashes with Military Honors will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery at a later time. Contributions in memory of Berle may be made to Michigan Bell Telephone Pioneers, 3566 Michael Ave SW, Wyoming, MI 49509.

Tressa passed away Monday, June 3, 2019 at Borgess Medical Center.

She was born May 8, 1936 in Byron Center the daughter of Joseph and Reka (Kuiphof) Morren.

Tressa spent many years working on the family farm and raising her family. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing, embroidery, crocheting, doing puzzles, flower gardening and canning the many vegetables she grew in her garden. On August 29, 1957 in Byron Center she married LaVern DeMann who survives. Also surviving are her children, Ken (Michelle) DeMann of Shelbyville, Doug (Jeanne) DeMann of Martin and Pat (Keith) Kuyper of Dorr; 10 grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren; sister, Bea Klunder along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Jim DeMann. Friends may visit with Tressa’s family from 5-8 P.M., Friday, June 7, 2019 at the East Martin Christian Reformed Church where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, June 8, 2019 with Pastor Derek Norman officiating. Private family burial will take place at East Martin Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Tressa may be made to East Martin Christian School.

Russell D. PREDUM

AGE 85 - KALAMAZOO, MI Russell passed away Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo.

He was born December 22, 1933 in Martin, the son of Henry and Edith (Lowery) Predum. Russ proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. For more than 40 years he had worked at James River Paper Mill and retired as an electrician.

He was also active with the union and had served as the President. In his free time Russ enjoyed going to flea markets, fishing, boating and loved spending time visiting with his family and many friends. He was a member of the Otsego American Legion Post 84 and was a life member of the Otsego VFW Post #3030. On July 21, 1955 in Angola, Indiana he married Emma June Soderquist who passed away in 2010. Surviving are his children, Donna (Chuck) Valkner of Manton and Matt McNutt of Kalamazoo; 9 grandchildren, Kristen (Mike) Herlein, Jennifer Brown, Steven Searles Jr, Keith Valkner, Amber Searles, Donny Predum, Crayton Valkner, Shane McNutt and Caleb Valkner; 7 great-grandchildren, Aleayah and Brooklyn Herlein, Kyla, Leanna and Riley Predum and Tytus and Isabella Hall; siblings, Treva Schoneboom, Roland Predum, Mike Predum, Bonnie Putman and Clare Predum along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughters, Deanna Searles and Dawn Predum and siblings, Adelia McNutt, Alvin Predum, Joe Predum and Olive “Becky” Pantale. Funeral services took place Thursday, June 6, 2019 at the Winkel Funeral Home - Otsego with son-in-law, Chuck Valkner officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell. AGE 79 - PLAINWELL, MI Hutch passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at Borgess Medical Center.

He was born November 26, 1939 in Bemidji, Minnesota, the son of Homer and Doris (Holm) Hutchinson. For almost 40 years Hutch had worked at Menasha until his retirement. Hutch was a John Deere man and enjoyed tinkering in his garage, building tractors and riding motorcycles. He also liked taking trips out west to ride quads with his friends. Surviving are his lifetime companion, Wanda Morris, son, Rick Hutchinson and grandchildren, Jared and Jenny Hutchinson and Gavin Gouker. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Myra. Friends may visit with Hutch’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Friday, June 7, 2019 at the Winkel Funeral Home - Otsego until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M., with celebrant Mary Ann Devries officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Hutch may be made to the American Heart Association.

“THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT”

God always keeps His promises! Shortly before He ascended from the earth, our Lord promised the Holy Spirit would come with “power from on high.” The promise would empower Christ’s followers to be His witnesses in their city, region and throughout the entire world (Acts l: 8).

God’s promise was gloriously fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost. It was a spectacular and dramatic event with universal significance (Acts 2:1-6). The promise was extended to all generations including our generation (Acts 2:39). This event is celebrated each year on what is called Pentecost Sunday (June 9, 2019).

Question: What did this mean then? What does it mean now? Let’s take a closer look.

THE PURPOSE OF THE PROMISE Then, as now, the death of a loved one leaves a huge vacuum. The absence of Jesus presented a gigantic problem. Who would succeed Him? How would they survive without Him? During His later days on earth, Jesus tried to encourage them by saying He would not leave them to fend for themselves. The very same Spirit who was in Jesus would be in them (John 14:1618).

THE POWER OF THE PROMISE The Holy Spirit provides power for forgiveness, service and daily living for the glory of God. Thus, we have power for a purpose.

THE PRACTICE OF THE PROMISE When we repent of our sins and accept Christ as our Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us (Romans 8:11). We are actually “sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians l: 13). Thus, to practice the promise is to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

This is both a command and a promise (Acts 2:38; Ephesians 5:18). So, let us be filled with God’s Spirit.

It is our spiritual birthright!

Prayer: Dear Lord, I receive Your promise today and forever. Amen.
