Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Love's 878 in Alamo
The Otsego-Plainwell Area Chamber of Commerce was happy to hold a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on July 7, 2021 to celebrate the opening of Love's Travel Stop just off D Ave. in Alamo. Love's motto of "Clean Places and Friendly Faces" dates back to 1964 when Tom and Judy Love opened their first filling station in Watonga, Oklahoma. Love's is a family-owned company based in Oklahoma City that employs over 28,000 people nationwide. "Our goal is to offer the best customer service no matter what your purpose for visiting us. We hope to get people back on the road quickly, offer good value and competitive prices and keep our buildings looking pristine for years to come." Love's 878 adds 59 truck parking spaces to Kalamazoo County. The more than 12,000-sq. ft. travel stop includes a fresh kitchen concept, dog park, showers, laundry facilities, a Mobile to Go Zone and a leased McDonald's restaurant. This store is the ninth travel stop in Michigan and makes the nation's total of Love's Travel Stops climb to 563. As part of Love's community outreach efforts, the company donated $2000 to Plainwell High School.

AGE 89 - PLAINWELL, MI Bob went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, July 2, 2021, at the Wings Home in Allegan, after a lengthy struggle with lung disease. The youngest of nine children, Bob was born in Granite Falls, Minnesota on April 21, 1932, to Grant and Louisa (Shoemaker) Burger, and later moved to Buffalo Center, Iowa, where he graduated from Buffalo Center High School. Bob attended Estherville (Iowa) Junior College, where he was Captain of their championship football team in 1951. In 1952, he enlisted in the Air Force, spending one year in Korea. While in the service, he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1956. On March 31, 1956, he married Sally Grams, who survives. Also surviving are four children: Mark (Sandra) Burger, of North Carolina; Charlotte Burger, of Otsego; Kathryn Rhodes, of Indiana; and Barbara (Scott) Smalla, of Galesburg, Michigan. Five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren also survive, as well as his brother, Richard Burger, of Kenosha Wisconsin, and many nieces and nephews. Bob was employed by the City of Kalamazoo as a Firefighter for 22 years, retiring after a heart attack in 1978. During his retirement he worked part time at Plainwell Ice Cream. Bob enjoyed spending time with his family, playing sports, helping people, and working with Handymen for Christ. Bob was predeceased by his parents, four brothers, and three sisters. His body has been donated to science, with the arrangements being made by Medcure. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 9, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Otsego. Burial of the cremains will be held at a later date at Fort Custer National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Wings Home, Allegan, MI, or First Baptist Church of Otsego, MI. Donald passed away on June 24, 2021 at the age of 104. Donald was born on March 28, 1917. In loving memory of our father Don passed away peacefully with family by his side at Rose Harbor Hospice. Don is survived by his 4 children; 9 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and his sister. Don is preceded in death by his wife, Roma Mae; 2 grandchildren, Tara Oetman and Corinne Smith; parents; and 3 brothers. He was a WWII veteran and a lifelong member of the VFW. Some of Don’s many work accomplishments include supervisor, tool and die maker, watch maker, jewelry maker, as well as many others. A lifelong passion of flying led to his first ultralight aircraft which he restored and started flying. In 1987 he solo flew from the runway he had built at his home at the age of 68. He joined the Alamo Airforce club and gained many flying friends. He then purchased a 1946 Airicana 7AC Champion which he maintained, flew and soloed to get his private pilot’s license at age 84. Don had many hobbies including dancing, boating, water skiing, hunting, fishing and tinkering. There will be military honors at the Otsego VFW 3030 at 12:00pm on Saturday, July 10, 2021 (Please note date correction) with a memorial luncheon to follow. Inurnment will take place at Ft. Custer National Cemetery at a future date and time. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Rose Arbor Hospice. Peggy passed away Thursday, July 8, 2021 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born February 24, 1953 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Paul and Jane (Rosenberg) Williams. Peggy was a 1971 Plainwell High School graduate and lifelong resident of the area. She worked as a graphic designer for Auto Trader and J-Ad Graphics from 1983 until her retirement in 2014. Peggy enjoyed online shopping, crocheting, swimming, walking and exercising. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and taking care of her dog. On April 21, 1972 at St. Margaret Catholic Church she married James Warnez. Together they enjoyed wintering in Florida where she liked taking walks along the beach and going to Disney World. Peggy was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in St. James City, Florida. Surviving are her husband, Jim; sons, Aaron (Erin) Warnez of Plainwell and Daniel (Heidi) Warnez of Orlando; grandchildren, Genevieve, Abigail, Lillian, Kennedy, Sarah and Finley; her brother, Paul Williams along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Daniel. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A private family gathering will take place at a later time. Contributions in memory of Peggy may be made to St. Margaret Catholic School.

AGE 77 - PLAINWELL, MI Rick passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at his home in Plainwell. He was born May 27, 1944 in Allegan the son of Norman and Alma (Taylor) Miller. Rick was a 1962 Otsego High School graduate. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps serving 2 tours during Vietnam and earned a purple heart upon his honorable discharge. For over 37 years he owned and operated Rick Miller Well Drilling until his retirement in 2006. He would go out of his way to help others and often drilled wells for those in need. Rick had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening. He liked being outdoors, hunting, ice fishing and looking for mushrooms. Rick loved spending time with his family, teaching his children to shoot and taking his children, nieces and nephews for rides on the sled behind the truck. On October 26, 2015 in Otsego, he married Shizuko “Suzie” Toyozato who survives. Also surviving are children, Tammy (Dan) Hoffman, Stephanie (Kevin) Oldenberg, Lance (Bobby Jo Kenyon) Miller, Tina (Mike Kulyk) DeLoach and Jeon Yuri (Laura) DeLoach and 7 grandchildren, Daniel, Gil, Arianna, Ian, Mehl, Mari and Caroline along with nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. Special thanks to his niece and nephew, Shanon and Bryan along with his daughter, Tina for the wonderful care given in his final days. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Delbert Monroe and siblings Ted, Butch, Shirley and Dixie. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Angie died peacefully at home on June 23, 2021 at the age of 85. Angie was born on June 10, 1936 to Otto & Evelyn (Wildschut) Haylett. Angie married William Thompson in 1953. She is survived by her sisters Shirley VanRhee, Diana Haskins, and Carol McPherson, as well as several nieces and nephews. ADOPTABLE Pet of the Week! King is an absolutely wonderful, handsome and loving dog. He is very easy going and friendly - really just an awesome guy! King enjoys going on walks, relaxing in the sun and shade, getting pet and eating snacks. King has good manners and will sit or lay down when asked. He is also potty trained. King is 3 years old and weighs approximately 70 pounds. He could easily be adopted into a home with another cool dog. If you already have a dog in your home, a meet and greet will be set up at the shelter to make sure the dogs are a good match. Ideally, King's forever home would be cat-free. However, if you have cats that have lived with dogs before and are willing to work with King, he might still be the dog for you. It is recommended that any children in King's home be 12 years old and up. Unfortunately, King did test positive for heartworms. He is currently being treated with the slow-kill method at the shelter and is doing well. Any potential adopters will need to commit to completing the slow-kill treatment. Please do not let his heartworm treatment deter you from adopting this awesome, deserving dog. During His ministry on earth, Jesus performed many miracles. He saved sinners, healed the sick, and raised the death. He Himself died and was resurrected to eternal life as a sign of God’s power over sin and death. Jesus said, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe” (John 4:48).
Miracles are beyond human comprehension. If we could explain them, they would not be miracles. Thus, a miracle of God is something which we are not capable of doing on our own. Examples: l) We cannot save ourselves, thus God sent Jesus to save us from our sins and bestow upon us the gift of eternal life (John 3:l6). We are saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8). 2) We cannot face the power of evil in our own power, so God instructs believers to “Put on the whole armor of God” which includes, “the shield of faith” (Ephesians 6:16).
What is faith? “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1). Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Faith is taking the first step when you can’t see the entire staircase.” Faith is not that complicated. It is simply trusting God.
We place value on material wealth; God places value on spiritual treasures (Matthew 6:19-20). We place value on position; God places value on those who are “poor in spirit” (Matthew 5:3). We place value on earthly power; God places value on spiritual power (Acts 1:8). We place value on status; God places value on meekness (Matthew 5:5).
We applaud and honor athletes and coaches who are inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. God’s Hall of Fame is much different. At the end of the day, those whom God honors are those who lived “by faith” (Hebrews 11).
With these thoughts in mind, let us forever fix our eyes on Jesus, “the author and perfecter of our faith …” (Hebrews 12:2). The miracle of faith continues today in the hearts of all who believe.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I choose to continue the miracle by placing my faith in You all of my days. In Your strong name. Amen.
