MAPLE & TIMBER Maple and Timber were brought to the Allegan County Animal Shelter as strays with their 6 puppies.

They were both very good parents to their babies. Since the puppies are now weaned, the two dogs have enjoyed being together in their kennel and are looking for a forever home. Maple and Timber are about 3 years old. Maple is a very friendly, sweet girl and loves to cuddle up right next to you for some affection or just to be near you. She is playful yet gentle with toys and will carry around her favorite stuffed squeaky toy without damaging it. Timber is a happy, playful boy and also very handsome. He enjoys playing with all kinds of toys by himself or with a person, but also loves attention and will settle down to get affection - especially when it's belly rubs. Howard Wayne NORTON AGE 91 • OTSEGO, MI

Howard passed away on July 3, 2020. Howard was born on August, 4th 1928, at his family’s home at 113 Morrell Street, Otsego, MI, to Andrew and Imo (Newton) Norton. Howard was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Raymond (Bernice) Norton, Merle (Virginia) Norton, Vera (Leonard) Earl, Lois (Ross) Jenkins, Paul Norton, Ruth Norton, and an infant daughter, Judy. Howard is survived by his children Janet Norton and Steve Norton. Grandchildren: Sarah (Mike) Isbrecht, Marie (John) Eagle, Lori (Clint) Lykken, Barbie Seekman. Great-grandchildren: Emma, Ella, Taylor, Bryce and Dillen and several nieces and nephews. Survivors also include: Wife, Gwendolyn (Holden) Norton and her children: Allan (Debbie) Holden, Carolyn (Duane) VerHage, Wayne (Ruth) Holden, Kristine Kay Holden, Sharolyn (Bob) Bajo, Kathy Holden, Mark (Lura) Holden, and Angela (Gary) Augustine, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. If you considered yourself one of Howard’s friends, you won’t be surprised to learn that Hod had so many friends. Howard treasured each and every one of you personally. He was a true reflection of Christ shining through his life.

Howard wasn’t perfect, but he set a goal to pattern his life after someone who is. Howard chose this goal from the testimony of the Apostle Paul, in Philippians 1:20, “Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Howard dearly loved his Lord and he reflected that love to his children and stepchildren and especially to his wife, Gwen Norton. Howard and my father, Curtis Holden, were best friends. Considering all the many friends Howard left behind, he had many more in Heaven. Thanks be to God, who gifted him with a wonderful and godly mother. One of Howard’s school teachers, Gladys Wyatt, loved to tell me stories about my father, Howard and Don Moore as young boys. She told me those three boys were inseparable! Each one of them only wore shoes during school hours! Growing up, all three worked hard for the local farmers. Howard also worked in his teen years for his dear friend, another amazing man, Carl Holland, when he drove for Holland’s Dairy. Howard spent several years as a route driver, salesman and route supervisor, working for the Michigan Cottage Cheese Company in Otsego. Howard dearly loved working in sales. I was privileged to work with him at Curtis Trailer Sales. Howard also loved selling for Boylan Buick and Don Seelye Ford. Howard spent several years at being self-employed and did much work for McPherson’s Plastics. He worked in excavation and construction. Howard was a gifted carpenter. He loved all things mechanical, especially antique tractors.

Howard loved local history, and antiques in general, but especially farming antiques. Whatever his job, for Howard, joy was found in all the people he met.

Howard reflected Christ’s love for people, and Christ’s patience in long suffering and in hardships. Many times I saw Hod press on for love’s sake when I would have simply walked away. Howard loved his children Janet and Steve and each of his grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was very proud of each one, in fact treasured them. Howard had a genius sense of humor! I couldn’t approach him without smiling!

Howard also loved music, especially the great gospel hymns, and he was a gifted singer! One day I was with Howard and his son, my step-brother, Steve.

Howard was hard at work, struggling with a nearly impossible problem, when he said, “I give up!” I was at a loss for words. Steve reached deep within, finding words of wisdom, and blurted out, “You should give up!” God blessed us with a much-needed laugh!

When I consider counting my many blessings, and naming them one by one, as the song says, Howard Norton and my Mother were always first on that list.

Howard was a member of the greatest generation.

Americans need to consider their devotion to and love for God, and for their country. Our loss is indeed Heaven’s gain! Did I hear the words “Well done, my good and faithful servant?” A private, family-only funeral was held Thursday, July 9th at the First Baptist Church of Otsego. Interment will be at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. If desired, memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church of Otsego, Christian Neighbors, Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo or a charity of your choice.

Frances passed away Saturday, July 4, 2020 in Grand Rapids. She was born December 8, 1943 in Arkansas, the daughter of Charles and Edna (Bolen) McCormick. As a young woman Frances had been a bartender and waitress at the Olympia Restaurant and the Elks Lodge and for 20 years had been a nanny.

Frances loved music and singing. She was in several bands and had won several awards for her singing.

Frances had a strong faith and loved the Lord. She was a member of the Otsego Elks Lodge. Surviving are her children, David Ledbetter of Iowa, Ken (Terri) Ledbetter of Otsego, Tom Ledbetter of Kalamazoo and Herb (Cari) Ledbetter of Otsego; 6 grandchildren, Shawna, Andrew, Kenny, Ella, Olive and Alice; 3 great-grandchildren, Ethan, Andrew and Lliam; siblings, Char, Carrie, Peg and Roxanne along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jack Quinn and brother, Chuck. A graveside service took place Thursday, July 9, 2020 at Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park North in Kalamazoo. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Frances may be made to Christian Neighbors.

“I can do all things through him who strengthens me” – Philippians 4:13 The experience that inspired this article took place at a Middle School Track Meet at Coldwater last year. Our youngest grandson, Jack Minor, was a member of the Marshall Middle School Track & Field Team. It was his very first meet and his first time competing in the hurdles event. Without having any training, he came in first, but hit the ground at the finish line. His anxious Dad, who was videoing the event, shouted out, “Jack, are you hurt?” Jack answered, “I’ve got this Dad!”

It is a statement of confidence and encouragement.

This brings me to one of my favorite Bible verses (Philippians 4:13). In spite of all his sufferings, Apostle Paul could say, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). Paul’s message: Partner with God! The reason we can say, “I’ve Got This!” is because of our partnership with God.

Here are three practical ways we can partner with God: 1. WHEN TROUBLE COMES, WE CAN SAY “I’VE GOT THIS!”

We have heard the saying, “Caught between the Devil and the deep blue sea.” When Moses was leading the people of God to the Promised Land, he was literally caught between Pharaoh’s army and the deep Red Sea (Exodus 14:5-15). Moses trusted God to see them through and that is exactly what happened.

Abraham Lincoln knew the meaning of partnering with God when he said, “I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go.”

2. WHEN WE FEEL LIKE GIVING UP, WE CAN SAY, “I’VE GOT THIS!”

The disciples Peter and Judas Iscariot are a study in contrast. The main difference is that one failed, yet got up and finished the race. The other gave up entirely.

Inventor Thomas Edison made l,000 unsuccessful attempts before inventing the light bulb. Babe Ruth accumulated 1330 career strike-outs yet set a long standing home run record of 714. The point: Failure never needs to be final. When we can stand up and try again with the help of God, then we can know we are truly in partnership with God. 3. WHEN FACING AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE, WE CAN SAY, “I’VE GOT THIS!”

As the people of God wandered toward the Promised Land, they were hesitant about their future. Thus, twelve spies were sent in to scout out the land and the people. The minority report (Joshua and Caleb) were confident about entering the land (Numbers 13:30).

The majority report was negative (Numbers 13:30).

The majority ruled and therefore the judgment of God fell upon their unbelief. The question: Are we among those who trust our future to God?

When we can entrust our future to God, then we can know we are in partnership with God. It has been said, “We do not know what the future holds, but we know Who holds the future.”

Our grandson, Jack, is right in saying, “I’ve got this!” because, with God as our partner, we can conquer anything.

Prayer: Dear Lord, we want to be in partnership with You. In Your strong name. Amen.
