“THE MIRACLE OF HOPE”

Hope may be defined as expecting the best even when things have gone terribly wrong. The world witnessed a miracle of hope in l928 when Sir Alexander Fleming, a Scottish physician-scientist, discovered penicillin, the first natural antibiotic. A similar miracle happened in l953 when Jonas Salk, an American virologist and medical researcher who developed one of the first successful polio vaccines. Closer to home, our world benefits from the recent production of vaccines to protect against the COVID 19 virus and variants, including the Pfizer vaccine which was produced and distributed from Portage, Michigan.

Biblical hope is more than wishful thinking and blind optimism. It is based in the character of God who is faithful to all of God’s promises. One cannot have faith without hope or hope without faith. They always stand together. Remember, “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for …” (Hebrews 11:1).

Since Jesus is the personification hope, we can find everything we need in Him. The Bible is a book of hope. There are at least 180 references to the word hope in the Bible (97 in the Old Testament; 83 in the New Testament). Here are just some of the promises of God which give us hope: Protection (Psalm 33:18) Encouragement (Psalm 42:5) Rest (Psalm 62:5) Confidence (Psalm 71:5) Strength (Isaiah 40:31); A future (Jeremiah 29:11) Salvation (Romans 5:1-2) Joy (Romans 15:13) Resurrection (I Peter 1:3-4)

In a world of brokenness, God is our only source of hope. In Him, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (Hebrews 6:19). Won’t you turn to Him today for hope? Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for the miracle of hope. In Your strong name. Amen.

Philip Homer BERNER

Tina passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born April 5, 1960 in Battle Creek, the daughter of John and Judy (Durr) Millsap. Tina enjoyed swimming, doing arts and crafts, sewing and ceramics. On May 18 1979 in Plainwell she married Paul Grimm who survives. Also surviving are her children, Steph (Robin Howe) Grimm of Martin, Dan (Heather) Grimm of Richland and Tom Grimm of Plainwell; grandson, Benjamin; brothers, David Lowing and Tom Cardiff; brothersin-law, Russ Doxey and David (Brenda) Grimm along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Janie Doxey. Friends may visit with Tina’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Friday, July 16, 2021 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Dan Minor officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. Contributions in memory of Tina may be made to the Polaris Project to help fight human trafficking. Linda HEAD

AGE 73 - OTSEGO, MI Linda passed away Friday, July 9, 2021 at her home in Otsego. She was born September 14, 1947 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Charles and Mildred (Hodge) Quackenbush. For many years Linda was a cook at Western Michigan University. In her free time she enjoyed reading, shopping and traveling. Most of all she loved spending time with her family. Linda was a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge 345 in Otsego. In 1964 in Kalamazoo she married Phillip Head who survives. Also surviving are her children, Michelle (Henry) Zuydwegt of Florida, Cindy (Michael) King of Three Rivers, Patricia Van Bruggen of Otsego, Michael Head of Otsego, Christopher (Tiffany) Head of Parchment and Cheryl Head of Plainwell; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren along with her brother, Robert (Charlene) Quackenbush. She was preceded in death by her parents; children, Dan and April and siblings, Jim Quackenbush and Jacqueline Clickner. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later time. Contributions in memory of Linda may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice of Allegan.

Linda Lea WYKSTRA AGE 72 - MARTIN, MI

Linda passed away Saturday, July 10, 2021 at Allegan County Medical Care Community. Born October 25, 1948 to Paul and Elene Plank, Linda grew up in Holt, MI. She met her husband, Earl Wykstra, on a blind date in 1970 and they married a year later. Linda went to Alma College before graduating from Bronson School of Nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse (RN) at Allegan Medical Care facility for forty-two years prior to retiring in 2014. Linda loved gardening and flowers. She enjoyed reading books and doing different types of crafts such as stained glass, quilting, painting and ceramics. Linda also enjoyed traveling and camping with her friends and family. She especially loved to travel with her Aunt Hazel. Linda was a member of East Martin Christian Reformed Church. She is survived by her husband, Earl; two children, Jennifer (Chuck) Moore and John (Libby) Wykstra; her five loving grandchildren, Cassandra (Chase), Caleb, Trey, Dakota and Emma; and a great-grandson, Clifford. A memorial service took place at East Martin Christian Reformed Church, July 13, 2021. Memorial contributions may be made to East Martin Christian Reformed Church, 510 118th Avenue, Martin, MI 49070. Mary Alice (Salfi) ALLARD AGE 88 - OTSEGO, MI

Mary passed away peacefully as she went to be with the Lord on July 2nd, 2021. Mary was born August 9th, 1932 in Larchmont, New York to Joseph V. and Adeline M. Salfi. When she was about six years old, she and her family of five brothers moved to Pontiac, MI. She attended school at St. Michael's Catholic School and graduated in 1950. On February 13th, 1954, she wed Roger Joseph Allard. They had three children: Sandra Marie, Ruth Ann and Theresa Lynn. Unfortunately, Roger died suddenly in 1962. Mary was left to raise her young children on her own. Mary was a devout Catholic her entire life and found much strength in her faith. Mary worked at Pontiac Motors in accounting for almost 24 years. She enjoyed football, basketball, golf, reading, playing cards, games and coloring. Mary was a Detroit Lions fan through and through. In 1991, Mary moved to Plainwell, MI to be closer to her older daughter and son-in-law who survives, Sandra and James Blake. In 2005, Mary began spending winters in Silver Springs, FL. She was so happy there with relatives and friends. Then, in 2015, Mary spent winters with Sandy and Jim in Englewood, FL before moving into Heritage Oaks Assisted Living in Englewood, FL year round in 2018. She loved Florida but found it difficult to leave family and friends in MI. Mary is also survived by two great-grandchildren: Bryona Ormsby and Logan Allard from her grandson, Robert T. Allard (deceased 2019), as well as step-grandsons: Andrew (Sara) Blake and Benjamin Blake (Kristin Fox) and five great step-grandchildren. Visitation will take place on Friday, July 30th, 9:30am, prior to Rosary at 10:30am and Mass at 11:00am at St. Margaret's Church, 766 S. Farmer St., Otsego, MI. Luncheon to follow at St. Margaret's Church. Interment of her cremains will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Pontiac, MI at a later date. Donations may be made to St. Jude's Childrens Hospital Cancer Research.
