Marvin A. VANARSDAL Morris R. STOUGHTON, Jr. AGE 88 - OTSEGO, MI

Morrie passed away Friday, July 12, 2019 at his home in Otsego. He was born December 11, 1930 in Otsego, the son of Morris Sr. and Audrey (Edson) Stoughton. Morrie graduated from Otsego High School in 1949. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Morrie enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, chopping wood and gardening. He had a very strong faith and was a hard working Christian man. Morrie was happiest when surrounded by his children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. He was always where he was needed whether they knew it or not. On March 3, 1951 in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, he married Jeanette Curtis who passed away in 2002. Surviving are his children, Lee (Vicki) Stoughton, Robert (Judy) Stoughton, Gregg (Laurel) Stoughton, Robin (Kevin) Boulter and Jerry (Christine) Stoughton; grandchildren, Kyle, Chris, Jason, Jessica, Paul, Sarah, David, Samantha, Erick, Brandi, Trevor and Garret; 14 great-grandchildren and his siblings, Betty Galloway, Eva Belding and Linda Clark. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and siblings, Don and Marv Stoughton and Shirley Campbell. Funeral services took place Wednesday, July 17, 2019. Carol Hoeve officiated. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Morrie may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice. Linda M. (Metheny) HATTEN AGE 61 - OTSEGO, MI

Linda went to be with the Lord, Friday, July 5, 2019. She was born August 24, 1957 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the daughter of John and Jenny (Bolman) Metheny. Linda married the love of her life, George (Butch) Hatten on September 15, 1972. Surviving are her children, Mid, George “Pork” (Telisa), and Kimberly Tabbert; Step-mother Kathy Metheny; Sisters, Shiela Metheny, Marty Verburg, Chantel (Joe) Leduc; Brothers, Kenny, and John (Mary) Metheny. 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren. A special thank you to Dustin, Britteny (J.T.) Brooke for their continuous help in caring for their grandma. Proceeding her in death was her husband, and infant son, sister Sharon and her parents. Linda’s love was her children, grandchildren and any child who came to see her; also coffee and M&M’s. Per her wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of Life will be held at a later time.

Marvin passed away at the Life Care Center of Plainwell on July 12, 2019. He was born September 26, 1924. Marvin served honorably in WWII and will be missed and remembered with love by family and friends. According to his wishes there will be no service.

Lawrence Clare BELDEN AGE 74 - OTSEGO, MI

Larry passed away July 10, 2019. He was born October 29, 1944. He was preceded in death by his mother Margaret Vote Belden, his father Cleo 'Red' Belden and Sister Terri Belden Wood. Surviving are his wife, Sue, his daughters Tiffany and Audra, his step-sons Brett Harris (wife-Michelle) and Jason Moose and brother-in-law, Fred Price (wife-Patti), 5 grandchildren: Camille, Jeremiah & Abigail Pittman, Dylan Harris (wife-Jessi) and Ross Harris (wifeKatelyn). Larry lived in Otsego and Allegan all of his life. He graduated through the 8th grade and started riding race horses at the tender age of 11; riding at "Bush" Tracks in Michigan and Ohio. Larry's love of horses came from his Dad "Red," who joined a traveling rodeo at the age of thirteen. Larry worked construction for Heckmans, hauled gravel for Pickett and Belden Sand & Gravel, was a welder and a horseshoer but spent the majority of his life in the saddle racing and training horses. Larry followed in his Dad’s footsteps and has now passed his knowledge and love of horses onto the 3rd generation, his daughter Tiffany. Larry loved his life, loved people, loved his family & farm and would do anything for anyone to help them out. His legacy will live on through his family and friends. A celebration of Larry’s life will be July 27th from 11am – 4pm at the Belden farm, 2316 Lincoln Rd, Allegan, Mi. Bring a beverage and chair. We hope to see you there. Thomas J. MILLER

AGE 56 - KALAMAZOO, MI Thomas J. Miller died Sunday, July 14, 2019 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born September 4, 1962 in Pontiac, Michigan to Dick and Peg Miller. Tom’s proficiency in math and his determination to learn how things work, led to an education at GMI where he earned his Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering. He was employed at GM in Lansing for 25 years. Tom and Will then joined Lisa at their bed and breakfast in Omena where he enjoyed preparing breakfast and conversing with guests. He also was the Quality Manager at EaglePicher Technologies in Traverse City, and most recently, was a Quality Director at MEC in Byron Center, Michigan. It was while working in Lansing that he met and fell in love with Lisa. They were married September 20, 2001 in Las Vegas. He enjoyed doing home improvement projects, shopping at Menards and researching anything that caught his fancy. He loved spending time with his friends and family most of all. He would share his photography, cook great meals, vacation, and relax, all while being surrounded by his friends and family. He adored his dogs and was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings. He had a great sense of humor and lived his life to the fullest. Survivors include his wife Lisa; son William, of Kalamazoo; siblings, Mary Ann Sens (Don) of Grand Forks, North Dakota; Martha Theilmann (Richard) of Wayzata, Minnesota; Kate Snodgrass of Dayton, Ohio; Beth Miller (Cal Entinger) of Maple Grove, Minnesota, Margaret DeWitt (Scott) of Marietta, Georgia and Bob Miller of Three Oaks, Michigan; many nieces and nephews, his mother-inlaw Linda Hallett of Plainwell; sister-in-law, Jodie Giltrop of Plainwell and brother-in-law Kevin Scott (Vicky) of Plainwell. He was preceded in death by his mother Peg. His father Dick, passed July 16, 2019. Friends may visit with Tom’s family on Friday, August 9, 2019 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where the Rosary will be recited at 6:45 pm. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at 11:00 am at St. Margaret Church in Otsego. Private burial at Hillside Cemetery will be held at a later date. Bowser has a great personality. He is silly, loving and smart! At a young age of only 11 months old, he already knows how to sit when asked and is super motivated to learn more. Bowser is a German Shepherd and Labrador Retriever mix, and as you can see, he is a very handsome boy. Deep brown eyes, soft ears, and fawn color fur with white markings are just some of his many remarkable features. A forever home with an active family or individual to keep Bowser healthy and entertained would be ideal. “GROUNDED IN GOODNESS”

“The Fruit of the Spirit is … goodness” (Galatians 5:22)

Goodness is an attribute of God and present in the life of believers through the power of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22). Our character is created by the character of God. God is good in who God is and what God does. The psalmist said, “Taste and see that the Lord is good …” (Psalm 34:8).

We talk about being good and doing good things but, apart from God, our efforts to be good and do good are done in vain. Goodness is grounded in God. Thus, to be grounded in God is to be grounded in goodness.

In the sport of running races, runners work hard and do their best to be the best they are capable of becoming. There is an old saying “records are made to be broken.” Over time, a record can be broken if a runner works hard enough.

When I was in high school I took an interest in running. I was a member our school’s first track team. I ran long distance. Since I was the only long distance runner on our school’s first track team, at the end of my senior year, I set a school record for the mile run. I enjoyed holding the school record for exactly one year! The record was broken at the first meet in the following year!

What I am trying to say is God set the standard for goodness. Since God is the only One who can claim goodness, God’s record will never be broken! (Romans 3:12). The point: God calls us to a higher standard of goodness. Here are three examples from God’s Word. “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?” Luke 6:32, NIV). “… He is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked” (Luke 6:35, NRV). “As we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone …” (Galatians 6:l0, ESV). In another letter, Apostle Paul prays that we may be rooted and grounded in love (Ephesians 3:17). May this be our prayer. Amen.
