How I Overcame The Vicious Cycle Of Worry By: Stan Popovich Do you ever get stuck in the vicious cycle of worrying and fear in your life? As a published author, I struggled with fear and anxiety for over 20 years. Here is a brief summary of what I did to overcome the cycle of fear and anxiety in my life. 1. I got advice from the professionals: The first thing I did was to talk to various counselors since they knew how to deal with fear and anxiety. Whenever I talked to the counselors, I would bring a notebook and take notes so I would not forget the advice that was given to me. 2. I became an expert on dealing with fear and anxiety: I did everything possible to learn as much as I could in how to deal with my fears and anxieties. I talked to professionals, read books, joined support groups, and learned from my experiences. I never stopped learning on how improve on my situation. 3. I surrounded myself with helpful people: I made it a habit of surrounding myself with supportive people who understood what I was going through. This really helped me out when I was really struggling with my anxieties and stresses. 4. I learned how to manage my fearful thoughts: The key in overcoming the cycle of worry and fear is overcoming your fearful thoughts. Whenever I would get a negative and fearful thought, I would challenge that thought with positive statements and realistic thinking. I also made it a habit to focus on the facts of my current situation and not on my negative thoughts. 5. I was persistent: There were times I felt like giving up because my fears and anxieties were so powerful and I didn’t know what to do. I worried about what would happen and that just made my fears that much stronger. During those times, I would consult with a professional and I made it a point to learn from my experiences so that I would be better able to handle these situations in the future. 6. I did not make excuses: With a lot of practice, I became very good at dealing with my fears and anxieties. I realized that the answers to my problems were out there, however it was up to me to find those techniques that would get rid of my fears and anxieties. I realized that making excuses for not getting help wasn’t going to make things any better. 7. I made the choice to get better: You have to make the effort to find the answers to overcome your situation. It will not always be easy, but you can overcome the cycle of fear and worry with hard work and a willingness to learn from your every day experiences. The key is not to give up. Ronald L. “Skip” STRATTON, Jr. AGE 54 • OTSEGO, MI

Skip passed away Sunday, July 19, 2020 in Byron Center. He was born April 5, 1966 in Kalamazoo the son of Ronald and Diane (Peebles) Stratton. Skip was a 1984 Plainwell High School graduate. He worked at James River Corporation for several years before joining the U.S. Navy and proudly served during Desert Storm. He went on to work as a welder for Stryker and most recently had been a truck driver. Surviving are his son, Jason Stratton of South Carolina; his parents; sister, Lisa Marie (Bob) Stratton-Pickett of Plainwell along with many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert “Robbie” Stratton. A family visitation will be held from 3-5 PM, Saturday, July 25, 2020 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Cremation will follow. Michael L. COOLEY AGE 59 • OTSEGO, MI

Mike passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday, July 21, 2020. He was born October 12, 1960, the son of Lewis and Barbara (Langeance) Cooley. Mike was a 1978 Otsego High School graduate and lifelong resident of the area. Mike was a selfless parent and devoted friend. He passionately lived for spending time with his children and grandchildren. Mike belonged to the Wormburner, enjoyed days on the lake, adventures at Silver Lake, hunting, fishing and was a jack of all trades. He was an extraordinarily dedicated work horse with a limitless work ethic. He worked for RockTenn Paper Mill for over 30 years followed by years as a HVAC tech throughout the area. On October 17, 1987 he married the love of his life, Cindy Anderson who passed away in 2002. Surviving are his loving children, Rachelle Cooley and Matthew Cooley both of Otsego; he was Papa to his grandchildren, Kayden Bienz, Aliahana “Peanut” Cooley, Skylane Smith and Gideon “G” Smith; siblings, Stef (Mack) Makela and Sue (Rick) Rickli both of Otsego; mother and father-in-law, Judy and Rodger Anderson and brother-in-law, Jeffrey Anderson along with several nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and several close friends who were inherently family. A private memorial will take place at a later time. Leonard Richard Calvert went home to the Lord on July 17, 2020. Leonard was born June 14, 1930 in Three Rivers, Michigan, the son of George William and Pearl Irene (Bussler) Calvert. He attended Three Rivers High School. In 1946, Leonard joined the U.S. Air Force, serving three enlistments totaling 12 years. Leonard worked as a meteorologist for the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service for more than 21 years until his retirement in 1986. Surviving are his wife, Beverly Forsyth; a daughter, Terri Lynn (Rick) Chambers; two grandchildren, Tobi (Ryan) Mejeur and Tyler Chambers; two great grandchildren; a sister, Ruby Farrow and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers. A private memorial service will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery at a later date. AGE 100 • OTSEGO, MI Virgie passed away Thursday, July 23, 2020 at Allegan County Medical Care Community. She was born November 29, 1919 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Edward and Lora (Kane) Smith. For many years she was a secretary for the Upjohn Company. When Virgie was 15 years old she met the love of her life, Thomas Tipton. They were married four years later and spent 54 happy and beautiful years together until his passing in 1993. Virgie was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Loyalty Chapter #497 and was awarded the Matron of Charter, Grand Committee and Marshall of the State of Michigan. She was also an active member of the Parchment United Methodist Church. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, Veta Leversee and Ires Kimmell and her brother, Charles Smith. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at Robinson Cemetery in Gobles at a later time. “FACING OUR GIANTS”

“David said to the Philistine, ‘You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty…” Psalm 145:4 I am thinking of all of those forces that seek to overwhelm us and destroy us. We all face giants. These may include such things as low self-esteem, financial challenges, health problems or relational issues. When facing our giants, remember how David faced his giant.

The story appears in the seventeenth chapter of I Samuel (Old Testament). There were two armies in conflict with each other: the Philistines and the army of Israel. They were encamped on two mountains separated by a valley between them.

One morning there appeared out of the Philistines’ camp a giant named Goliath. He stood ten feet tall and was heavily armored. His appearance was enough to give the entire army of Israel an inferiority complex. The Scripture says they were “dismayed and greatly afraid” (I Samuel 17:24). The giant challenged them to send one man to do battle with him.

Young David, a shepherd boy, volunteered to fight Goliath. David told King Saul how he had slain both a lion and a bear that had come to attack his sheep. He was confident in his fight against Goliath. The King consented to David’s request. David went down the mountain and across the valley, fought the giant and defeated him.

In facing our giants, let us remember the strategy of David.

1. BE OURSELVES. In sending him off to battle, King Saul took off his armor and put in on David. However, Saul’s armor did not fit David. So he took off Saul’s armor and fought the giant in his own way. When I started out I wanted to preach like my father or evangelist Billy Graham. After a while I discovered my own personality and preaching style. If God wanted us to be someone else, God would have made us that way. The fact is God has equipped each of us with gifts and graces to be used to serve God in our own way.

2. USE WHAT WE HAVE. All David had was a sling and five stones. It only took one stone to kill the giant. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale was one of the great persons of influence in the 20th Century. He was called “Minister to Millions” and touched everyone from United States Presidents to common ordinary people. One of the highlights of my years as a pastor was meeting him in person. He is perhaps most remembered for his blockbuster book, “The Power of Positive Thinking.” We may be surprised to learn that for most of his life he battled the personal giant of low self-esteem. The point is if we use what we have, that will be enough to slay the giants we face.

3. WE CAN FACE OUR GIANTS WITH CONFIDENCE. Here is one of the most inspiring verses in the Bible: “David said to the Philistine, ‘You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty …”

I have enjoyed being around young long distance runners. Each summer for the past seven years I have been invited to give a faith talk at a summer run camp. It is a thrilling experience to see them advance through hard work and self- confidence. To believe in ourselves is a great asset. The saying is true, “We can if we THINK we can.” When we face our giants in the name of the Lord, we can defeat them every time.

In facing our giants, let us remember how David faced his and do likewise.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I will trust You to help me to face my giants. We will win every time. In Your strong name. Amen.
