Wishbone Wag & Walk is ‘IN PERSON’ in 2021! Instead of gathering virtually for our fundraiser Sat. Sept 11, 10am – 2pm, you’ll be able to walk with fellow dog lovers either downtown Saugatuck or remain in Douglas and walk up to Lake MI. Dress up your pup for a Patriotic theme contest for the Anniversary of 9/11.

Wag & Walk is Wishbone’s annual dog walk event that raises awareness and funds for homeless cats and dogs in Allegan County. Up to 1,000 animals come through the Allegan Shelter that Wishbone manages daily. This is a fun event for the entire family, two and four-legged, to get involved, support a great organization and make a difference for animals! We need YOUR help to make this annual event successful! Here’s how to participate: 1. Register for the Wag & Walk Dog Walk “REMEMBERANCE” 2. Fundraise with pledges for walking to help us continue our mission to save homeless animals 3. Winter is a sweet girl...

ADOPTABLE Pet of the Week! She can be a bit shy and reserved when meeting new people (she does better with women), but she does warm up pretty quick. Winter likes yummy treats and will sniff them out if you have them in your pocket. Winter's ideal home would be with a family who has a set routine that includes a good amount of time at home. Winter would do great in a home with kids. It is recommended that children in her forever home are 10 years old and up. She has done fine around cats at the shelter, but a slow introduction to any cats in the forever home is a good idea. She will need to be an only dog in the home, but with some work, she may be able to have a doggy friend outside of the home. Winter is almost 3 years old and weighs approximately 45 pounds. AGE 92 - PLAINWELL, MI Stuart passed away peacefully at his home on May 28, 2021. Stuart was born on July 26, 1928, to Leland and Georgia Hammond on the family farm in Doster where he had lived all his life. In 1947 he married Virginia (Ginny) Adams and they spent 70 years together until her death in 2018. He is survived by his three sons Michael (Wanda), Paul (Charlotte), and Phillip (Theresa) and a brother Basil. Stuart is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 35 great and great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Stuart graduated from Delton Kellogg High School in 1945 and worked various jobs until he started Hammond Electric Co in 1954 with one of the first electricians licenses in Michigan. He enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting and spending time with his family. As per Stuart’s wishes cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be held on August 21st at 11 a.m. at Hickory Corners Bible Church, 13720 Kellogg School Rd, Hickory Corners. Visitation will be at 10 a.m.

Suzanne Marie (Brown) HUTCHINSON AGE 92 - PLAINWELL, MI

Suzanne passed away peacefully on August 6, 2021. She was born December 18, 1928 to Isabelle and Gerald Brown at William Crispe Hospital in Plainwell, MI. Suzanne lived most of her life in Plainwell, and married her childhood sweetheart, LaVern Hutchinson on September 21, 1952. She had two daughters, Lyn (Spontelli) and Robin (Courts). She is a Graduate of Western Michigan University with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. She loved teaching fourth grade at Starr Elementary School for 27 years, and had a great fondness for all of her students. Suzanne loved classical music and was an accomplished flute player. She was accepted as a member of the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony when she was in the 8th grade, and went on to play first flute in the Kalamazoo Symphony for many years. Sue played often in church, local music groups, and also taught lessons. She loved poetry, reading, taking care of her backyard birds, gardening, spending time with her grandchildren, and traveling. Her most memorable trip was to Ireland in 1979 with her mother, sister, two aunts and her cousin. She was also an avid Detroit Tigers fan. Along with her daughters, Suzanne is survived by her sister, Barbara Benedict of Portage, MI; and brother Richard Brown of Flagstaff, AZ. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Mike Spontelli; her grandchildren Jillian Wells, Elizabeth (Devin) Berghorst, and Carly Courts; two great grandchildren, Peyton Wells, and Grayson Berghorst; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and grandson, (Michael Spontelli). In keeping with her wishes, a private memorial and graveside service will be taking place. Sue was loved very dearly by her family and many friends. She will be greatly missed. Her family would appreciate donations to the Kalamazoo Nature Center in her memory in lieu of flowers. AGE 73 - PLAINWELL, MI Char passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, August 6th, 2021 at the Life Care Center in Plainwell. She was born on July 7, 1948, the daughter of George Tazelaar and Frances Lance. Char graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1966. She worked as Activities Director of Life Care Center for many years and began her retirement from Rizzo Packaging. Char loved watching the birds, playing bingo and spending time with family. In 1968 she married the love of her life Alvin Predum who passed in 2017. Surviving are her sons: Tony (Amy) Predum of Plainwell, Rob Cronen of Gobles, grandson Trever Predum and siblings Linda, Sherri and Mary. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother George. Cremation has taken place and a burial service will be held at a later time.

Rod passed away Friday, August 6, 2021 at his home in Otsego. He was born July 17, 1962 in Alma, the son of Robert and Hazel (Edwards) Lewis. Rod was an Otsego High School graduate and for 20 years worked at Kalamazoo Steel Processing. Rod had a very dry sense of humor and in his free time enjoyed riding motorcycles and tinkering with cars. He was a member of the Otsego Moose Lodge and loved his dogs. Surviving are his brother, Scott Lewis; sister, Lisa (Gary) Sutton; twin sister, Cindy (Mike) Stough; nephews, Cody, Zach and Matt Sutton and Michael Stough and nieces, Tammy D’Amore, Teresa Stough and Abbey Stough. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Bob Lewis. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later time. Contributions in memory of Rod may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America.

Dale passed away on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at the age of 78. Dale was born on August 9, 1942 in Kalamazoo, MI. He was the son of Nicholas and Josie (Hoekstra) Talsma. As a young boy he went through Martin Schools before graduating from Kalamazoo Christian with the Class of 1959. After high school he went to work for Mead as a machine adjuster and was employed there for over 42 years. While at Mead he was also the union steward for a number of years. On October 20, 1961 he married Jean Miller, and together they had three children: Doug, Brian, and Jody. His hobbies involved racing. He loved racing and was someone that helped push the cars out at Kalamazoo Speedway. His family describes him as strong-willed, a man with a quick wit, great sense of humor and a hard worker. Dale is survived by his three children: Doug (Kelly) Talsma, of Martin; Brian (Ginger) Talsma, of IN; Jody (Matt) Barkley, of Kalamazoo; five grandchildren: Allison (Jeremy) Halsted, of Hopkins; Amy Talsma, of Allegan; Christopher Talsma, of Martin; Cole Talsma, of IN; Benjamin Wilcox, of Kalamazoo; four great grandchildren: Adam, Bailee, Tyler, and Evan. He is also survived by his brother: Larry (Deb) Talsma, of Hastings. Dale is preceded in death by his wife: Jean; grandson: Rick Talsma; parents: Nicholas and Josie Talsma, and brother: Denny Talsma. AGE 87 - ALLEGAN, MI Pearl passed away Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born February 8, 1934 in Allegan, the daughter of Charles “Speed” and Marie (Ostrander) Davis. Pearl enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, making blankets for her family and riding motorcycles on the trails. On November 24, 1952 in Goshen, Indiana, she married John Oisten who survives. Also surviving are her children, Judy (Ron) Oisten of Vicksburg, Susan Oisten of Plainwell and John (Kay) Oisten of Allegan; grandchildren, Christina, Kathy, Sarah, Ron, Heather, Billy, Tasha, Peggy, Carolyn and Travis; 22 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; children, Viola and Katherine and by her sister, Louise. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with Pastor Tom Harrison officiating. Burial took place at Hicks Cemetery in Watson Township. Jason passed away Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at his home in Otsego. He was born December 26, 1992 in Granada Hills, California, the son of Jeffrey King and April Etherton. Jason attended Otsego High School and was an amazing wrestler. He worked at Bailtek in Galesburg and had recently started working at Safari Circuits in Otsego. Jason loved dogs and enjoyed watching his boys play sports, playing video games with his family and friends, especially NBA 2K, spending time at the campground, sleeping, fishing and watching football with his brother. Surviving are his sons, Aubrey King of Otsego and Ryder King of Delton; parents, April (Randy Smith) King-Smith and Jeff King of Ludington; brothers, Connor Smith of Otsego and Brody King of Ludington; grandparents, Jim and Diane Collins of Otsego and Marilyn King of Plainwell along with several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Karen and Archie Smith, Jean Merrill and John King. Cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Jason’s family from 6-8 PM, Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Jason may be made to the Community Healing Centers in Kalamazoo.

Ardelle G. HUTCHINSON AGE 88 - OTSEGO, MI

Ardelle passed away Thursday, August 12, 2021 at Vicinia Gardens in Otsego. She was born August 30, 1932 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Fred and Emma (Bahr) Gewiss. Ardelle was a 1950 Kalamazoo Central High School graduate and worked at Michigan Bell for over 30 years retiring in 1988. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo, going for lunch on family birthdays and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. Ardelle was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Otsego and was active in the choir and Ladies Guild. On January 28, 1956 at Zion Lutheran Church in Kalamazoo, she married Larry Hutchinson who survives. Also surviving are her children, Julie (Dave) Levett of Allegan and Marty (Kelley) Hutchinson of Otsego; 8 grandchildren, Austin, Brady, Coleton, Meghan, Lyndsey, Justin, Sean and Sarah; 13 great-grandchildren with another due soon; siblings, Laverna, Sharon and Loretta; brother-in-law, Don (Sally) Hutchinson along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Kathie and siblings, Larry and Rosie. Friends may visit with Ardelle’s family from 4-6 PM, Sunday, August 15, 2021 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, and starting at 10AM, Monday, August 16, 2021 until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M, at Peace Lutheran Church in Otsego, with Pastor Nathaniel Timmermann officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. Contributions in memory of Ardelle may be made to Peace Lutheran Church of Otsego or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.

“MORE THAN ENOUGH”

The grace of God may be defined as God’s love extended to all even when we are undeserving of it. Apostle Paul called himself “The least of the apostles” because he felt so unworthy of God’s grace. Before he met Christ, Saul of Tarsus was a domestic terrorist of Christians. After he met Christ, God not only changed his life, but also his name to Paul, the Apostle (“One who is sent.”)

In the above text Paul was feeling physically and mentally weak. Yet he came to believe that God’s grace was sufficient for all his needs. Do we feel this way? Let us consider just three examples of “more than enough” grace. 1. PERSONAL SALVATION.

God’s grace is more than enough to save us (Ephesians 2:8). I think this is what Julia H. Johnston was thinking way back in l911 when she wrote (In her hymn entitled “Grace Greater than Our Sin”) which reads in part: “Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt! Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured, there where the blood of the Lamb was spilt.” 2. THE CHALLENGES OF DAILY LIVING.

One of my favorite stories is about a minister who dreamed he had died and went to Heaven. He was a proud person. When he approached the gates, Saint Peter told him he needed 100 points to get in. Here is the conversation:

Minister: “I pastored for 43 years.” Saint Peter: “Fine, that’s worth one point.” Minister, “What? Only one point for 43 years?” Minister: “I visited the sick and shut-ins.” Saint Peter: “One point.” Minister: “I worked with young people.” Saint Peter: “One point.”

Minister: “I developed a number of fine Scout programs.”

Saint Peter: “One point. That makes four points. You need 96 more.”

The Minister, in a panic: “I feel so helpless, so inadequate. Except for the grace of God, I don’t have a chance!”
