With great memories and life lessons learned while in the OHS band, Otsego graduate and Tengam President Mark McPherson donated an entirely new percussion set this fall. It’s been more than 25 years since Mark McPherson played percussion for the OHS Band, but his experience with the Otsego Fine Arts programs never diminished which prompted him to give back in a big way this year. After enjoying a concert last year, he started thinking about what he could do for the band. “Fine arts are near and dear to my heart. Thelma passed away Sunday, August 18, 2019 at Wings Home in Allegan. She was born April 5, 1936 in Allegan the daughter of Hugh and Beatrice (Clawson) Taylor. Thelma had been a secretary at Tru Heat in Allegan for 10 years retiring after her marriage to Steven Smalla on January 28, 1989. She was active in the Otsego Church of God as a prayer warrior and was happiest when she was surrounded by her family. She is survived by her husband of 30 years; her 5 children, Cindi (Dan) Witt of Gobles, Bill Jr. (Diana) Doest of Allegan, Sharon (Bruce) Milhiem of Otsego, Ron (Louellen) Doest of Allegan and Rick (Dawn) Doest of Plainwell and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant sister, June and brother, Ivan. Friends may visit with Thelma’s family starting at 12:00 P.M., Friday, August 23, 2019 at the Otsego Church of God until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 P.M., with Pastor Stephen Burrow officiating. Jim passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at Allegan General Hospital. He was born January 31, 1940 in Kalamazoo, the son of William Menck and Edith (Savage) Cannom. Jim had worked at Michigan Gas Utilities until his retirement in 1994. After retiring Jim went to work at a well drilling company in the area. He had been the Trowbridge Township Supervisor and Assessor for many years. In his spare time Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, woodworking and gardening. He loved spending time with his family, farming together and taking trips up north. On November 8, 1958 in Kalamazoo he married Katheryn Riley who survives. Also surviving are his children, Deborah (Lynn) Philley of Plainwell and Patricia Grebner of Texas; grandson, Peyton Grebner of Texas and siblings, William (Shirley) Menck, Janene (Fallyen) Fitzpatrick, Sharon Cubitt, Tom (Nan) Menck, Jerry (Lynn) Menck and Karen (Ken) Schuemann. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Kathy and Susan. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. He Lived! Sad news from Otsego, MI. Daniel W. Doubblestien (Sr) passed on to be the with lord on July 27, 2019. Dan was a husband to Jean Doubblestien; father to Daniel W. Doubblestien Jr., Dana Anderson (Digby) and Tammy Ginebaugh (Digby). Also, he was a grandfather to 7 and a great-grandfather to 3. Dan met his bride, Jean (Katje) Doubblestien at a card game at a mutual friend’s home north of Otsego, MI during the late 60’s. The two knew instantly that they would be together and made their vows in 1969. With almost 50 years together, Jean stayed right next to Dan’s side until the end. Dan was a military man, serving during Vietnam as a loadmaster on a C-130 cargo plane. He was a fierce and passionate competitor on the skeet field and did so regionally and nationally. Dan won the hearts of all that crossed his path by just being the light, working hard and simply being honest to a fault. He was a troubadour of his time. Those that would like to pay their respects and have some fellowship time with the family are invited to do so. The event will be held on September 1st at 10:00 AM. Bill passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at his home in Martin. He was born February 1, 1938 in Plainwell the son of Bruce and Margaret (Mott) Fenner. Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. For many years he had worked as a truck driver. He was a member of the Teamsters Union. Bill enjoyed antique tractors, model trains and railroads, gardening and woodworking. Bill was happiest when he was surrounded by his family. He married Sharon Cardiff who passed away in 2014. Surviving are his children, Jeffrey Fenner, Marcia (Jerry) Fowler, Susan (Gary) Coburn, Michael “Meghan” (Brittany) Fenner and Scott (Pam) Fenner; 14 grandchildren, 13 greatgrandchildren and siblings, Fran Kennicott, Kathy (Mark) Knowlton, Linda (Rick) Craner, Kim (Bryon) Sheldon and Richard (Deb) Raith. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-parents; wife and siblings, Clifford Fenner, Sharon Meacham and Beverly Roman. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Bill’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, August 31, 2019 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego until the time of the memorial service at 11:00A.M. Bill passed away Monday, August 19, 2019 at his home in Plainwell. He was born June 14, 1945 in Newark, Ohio, the son of James and Helen (Munkachy) Bibart. Bill graduated from Newark High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and his master’s degree from Central Michigan University. For 25 years he had taught business at Garber High School in Essexville until his retirement in 1994. In his free time Bill enjoyed spending time in the Petoskey area, boating, fishing with his grandchildren, fly fishing, golfing and coaching football and swim. Bill had lived in Essexville for 40 years and was a member of the Bay City Elks. In 1969 in Henderson, Kentucky he married Karen Bland who survives. Also surviving are his children, Ashley (Kyle) Nelson of Plainwell, James (Carla) Bibart of Huntington Woods and Allyson (Dave) Rademacher of Wisconsin; grandchildren, Jackson, Sofia, William, Aiden and Alex and his siblings, Dick (Lois) Bibart and Mary (Gerry) Billy. He was preceded in death by his parents. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A private family gathering will be held at a later time. Shirley passed away Sunday, August 11, 2019 at Life Care Center of Plainwell. She was born June 26, 1936 in Salem Ohio; the daughter of Russell and Ethel (Jackson) Greenawalt. In 1954 she graduated from Salem High School and on September 3rd of that year she married the love of her life Leroy England (who passed away October of 2017). Shirley loved life, whether it was the her dogs, riding her Harley (with the Western Reserve Motorcycle Club they started with their friends), playing music on her keyboard, family get togethers or daily happy hour she shared frequently with her son-in-law. She was happy wherever they lived from the family farm in Ellsworth, East Palestine, Ft Myers, Florida or Plainwell, Michigan. She is survived by their daughter Debra (Dave) Cobb of Plainwell, MI; a special niece Cindy (Tony) Moszynski of Canonsburg, PA; family members Richard (Marlene) England of East Palestine, OH; Judy (Bunk) Godsey of Alliance, OH; along with many nieces, nephews and extended family. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Leroy, her parents, 2 brothers Charles and Robert, 2 sisters Theda and Dorothy, a special sister-in-law Dorothy Zoppelt and her in-laws Herbert and Ethel England. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her and loved her. Per her request cremation has taken place with no memorial service planned at this time.

Geraldine L. “Gerry” PETERSON AGE 92 - OTSEGO, MI

Geraldine (Gerry) Lila Peterson was called Home to be with her Lord and Savior on August 18, 2019. She was 92. She was born September 7, 1926, in Muskegon, MI, to Rufus Leroy and Geraldine (Bowen) Deater. Gerry attended Bob Jones University and earned a teaching degree. She taught first through fourth grades. She also performed in a women’s vocal trio at college. On July 13, 1957, she married Rev. Norris M. Peterson, who was an ordained minister in the Evangelical Covenant Church. Together, they served Covenant churches in Lansing, MI (1951-67), Fresno, CA (1967-72), Bellevue (Highland) WA (1973-79), Kalamazoo (Westside), MI (1980-87), and Twin Lake, MI, for 13 years. Norris retired in 1997 after 50 years of pastoral ministry, and they settled in Grand Rapids, MI, for 13 years. They then moved to Moline, IL, to be near their daughter, Patti Youngs and her husband Rev. Darin Youngs. After Norris’ death in 2013, Gerry moved with Patti and Darin to Otsego, MI. She was a member of First Congregational Church (Otsego, MI), where Darin serves as pastor. Gerry enjoyed the fellowship of the Thursday ladies’ quilting group and the after-church fellowship time. She also enjoyed being a part of the Youngs’ extended family gatherings. Gerry was a faithful partner in ministry to her husband Norris. She considered it a joy to serve others. Her pleasant nature was an encouragement to all who knew her. She consistently placed others before herself. Gerry is survived by her daughter, Patricia Youngs (Rev. Darin) of Otsego, MI; a son, Gregory (Venisa) of Ludington, MI; three grandchildren, Wesley Cameron Youngs, Kalamazoo, MI; Grant Peterson Youngs, Lansing, MI; and Garrison Reed Youngs, St. Joseph, MI; a brother, Dan (Marilyn) Deater of Grand Rapids, MI and sister-in-law, Betty Deater of Muskegon, MI. Gerry was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Norris M. Peterson in 2013; a sister, Patricia Carlson of Muskegon, MI, in 2014; and her fraternal twin brother, Gerald Deater of Muskegon, MI, in 2014. Funeral services were held August 22, 2019 at First Congregational Church, Otsego, MI, with Rev. Darin Youngs officiating. Memorials may be given to First Congregational Church (120 W.
