Florence FINKEY

AGE 98 • KALAMAZOO, MI Florence passed away Friday, August 21, 2020 at Rose Arbor in Kalamazoo. She was born August 2, 1922 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Ruluf and Frances (VanGeison) Blue. Florence was a 1940 Otsego High School graduate and attended Maher’s Business School in Kalamazoo. In 1942 she joined the U.S. Naval Reserve and served her country during World War II. She married Robert Snow in 1945 and together they traveled to California and Oregon returning to Alamo, Michigan to raise their two sons. They lived in the UP for 6 years and after Robert passed in 1985 Florence returned to Alamo. She married Berle Finkey in 1989. Together they enjoyed gardening and bus tours. Florence’s love of local history led her to write and publish two books about Alamo Township and country life. She enjoyed volunteering at church and in her community, dancing, doing crafts, music and traveling. Surviving are her son, Paul (Teri) Snow of Otsego, grandchildren, Nathan (Kallin) Snow, Jared (Stephanie) Snow and Caitlin (Justin) Nolan and 2 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Robert; second husband, Berle; son, Gordon Snow; granddaughter, Amanda Snow and brother, Donald. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, August 29, 2020 at the First Congregational Church in Otsego with Pastor Bruce Vander Kolk officiating. Burial of ashes will take place at Alamo Center Cemetery at a later time. Contributions in memory of Florence may be made to the First Congregational Church of Otsego. Don passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 11, 2020. He was born on August 31, 1947 in Plainwell, Michigan, the son of Earl and Dorothy Hurlbut. Don graduated from Otsego High School in 1965. On December 10, 1965 he married Sherry Lynne Meacham, his high school sweetheart. Don enjoyed the outdoors, his family, his friends and his grandchildren. Don was employed for 41 years with Parker-Hanniﬁn from 1966 to March 2007. He began as a Tool & Die Maker and ended as a Purchasing Manager. He started out in Otsego, Michigan and transferred to Albion in 1983 to set up a new factory. Don is survived by his wife, Sherry Hurlbut; daughters, Debra (Tony) Lower and Lisa (Skip) Harmeyer.; son, Douglas Hurlbut; grandchildren, Ryan Donald and (Jamie Till) Lower, Caleb Donald Harmeyer, Hannah Harmeyer and Fiona Hurlbut; great granddaughter, Elyssa Lower; and his siblings: Daniel (Mary Sue) Hurlbut, Janet (Bob) Lamper, Sue (Randy) Hendrick and Nancy Otto. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his grandson Justin Lower, his brother-in-law Dave Otto and his nephew Daniel Hurlbut Jr. According to his wishes, cremation will take place. A memorial service will take place at a later date due to COVID-19. Burial of ashes will take place at Greenbower Cemetery in Alamo Township, Michigan, at a later time. Brenda went to her Heavenly home, Monday, August 24, 2020 at her home in Otsego. Brenda’s suffering has ended. She is now living her joyful life with her Savior, Yeshua. Brenda was born June 18, 1970 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the daughter of Clifford Conrad and Mare (Wangerin) Westin. She attended the University of Wisconsin, Platteville. For 25 years she worked at Parker Hannifin Brass and was also the Vice President of eCa Tech Inc. until her retirement. Surviving are her son, Zac Conrad; mother, Mare Westin; sister, Amanda (Tony) Banas; brother, Troy (Charmaine) Conrad; step-mother, Janice Conrad; step-sister, Dawn (Travis) Sander along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Clifford Conrad; stepfather, Stephan Westin and brother, Mark Conrad. A private graveside service will be held at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, September 5, 2020 at the home of her sister, Amanda Banas, 361 15th St., Otsego, MI with a time of fellowship to follow until 4:00 P.M. AGE 50 • OTSEGO, MI Darin passed away unexpectedly Monday, August 24, 2020 at his home in Otsego. He was born April 18, 1970 in Buchanan, Michigan, the son of Frederick and Stephanie (Kaufman) Price. Darin was a 1988 River Valley High School graduate and played basketball, football and was an All-State athlete in baseball. He attended KVCC and was awarded the Academic Athlete Award. Darin went on to receive his Master’s in Education from Western Michigan University. For the last 25 years he was a beloved teacher at Otsego Middle School. Darin loved his students and enjoyed coaching girls’ and boys’ basketball and boys’ baseball. The joy of Darin’s life was his daughter Kennedy who he loved spending time with. Surviving along with his daughter are his mother, Stephanie (Paul) Zdanis of Three Oaks, brothers, Gregory (Laurie) Price of Bridgman and Jeffrey Price of Indiana; twin sister, Deana (Donald) Bowman of Kalamazoo along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred in 1986 and by his grandparents. Darin will be missed by his family and by his many friends. Cremation has taken place. A drive by visitation will be held from 12 noon to 4PM, Saturday, August 29, 2020 at Bulldog Stadium in Otsego. Burial of ashes will take place at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Three Oaks at a later time. Ken died peacefully at New Friends, A vibrant Memory Care & Assisted Living Community on August 23, 2020 in Kalamazoo, Michigan at the age of 75. Ken was born on July 8, 1945 in Richland, MI, the youngest of three children born to Leo and Pauline (Piasecki) Reau. On January 26, 2007 he married Betty Jean (Ruoss) Bradley. Ken grew up in Richland before moving to Kalamazoo where he worked at Kalamazoo Stamp and Die which later became Tower Automotive. He worked as a tool and die maker for many years until his retirement. Ken was actively involved in the local UAW, at one point serving as their treasurer. Ken was a great man with a tremendous sense of humor. He was known for “telling it like it is”. Ken loved to camp, often taking his family on camping trips when his children were younger and later spending the winters RV-ing in Texas. He was an avid motorcyclist taking many cross-country trips on his beloved Honda Goldwing. He also loved boating, particularly on Gull Lake as well as visiting many amusement parks. In addition to his wife Betty, he is survived by his daughters, Peggy (James) English of Lake Ariel, PA, Patricia (Aaron) Gamache of Marcellus, MI, Jennifer Lasiewicz (Todd Webster) of Eau Claire, MI and Michelle (Michael) Feltner of Milford, MI; step-daughters Wendy (Allen) Ebert and Kim (Jeff) Weers; grandchildren, Daniel English, Michael & Thomas Gamache, Melanie, Emily & Charlie Feltner, Matthew & Karolina Ebert, Victoria Weers & MacKenzie Nichols; great grandchildren, Cullen, McKenzie, Keegan, William and Gabiella English and Michael Nichols. He is additionally survived by Gary Deggs of Whitney, TX and Pamela (Roger) WesawBell of Kalamazoo to whom he was a father-figure, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Jerry passed away Monday, August 24, 2020 at his home in Otsego surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 16, 1942 in Allegan, the youngest son of John and Margaret (Clawson) Kruithoff. Jerry worked for Rockwell International for 24 years and for 10 years at IMCS in Holland. He had a very giving heart and enjoyed baking over 3500 cinnamon rolls and delivering them around town, to dialysis units for employees, businesses, neighbors and anyone out on the street on Christmas morning. Jerry liked doing projects with his friends and helping others with home and car repairs. He was the president of the Bayberry Condo Association. Jerry was a member of the Otsego United Methodist Church where he was a trustee. On June 30, 1962 he married Betty Arnsman who passed away in 1989. On August 26, 1989 he married Joyce Johnson who survives. Also surviving are his children, Karinda Holland, Lori (Chris) Niffenegger, Chad (Anne) Kruithoff and Scott (Heather) Kruithoff; step-children, Jennifer (Scott) Miller, David (Stacey) Clark and Jessica Clark; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kathryn and Caleb Holland, Jacob (Susan) and Lindsey Niffenegger, Calvin and Hayden Kruithoff, Morgan, Emma and Owen Kruithoff, Josh (Dee) and Megan Miller, Mackenzie Clark, Celina (Andrew) Wamser and Clay (Skyla) and Christian Clark; great-grandchildren, Lucas and Landen Ewing, Andrew and Adaline Wamser and Sigfried Skiles along with his brothers, Gerald and Ronald Kruithoff. He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Betty. Friends may visit with Jerry’s family starting at 9:30 A.M., Saturday, August 29, 2020 at the Dix Street entrance of Bayberry Condo Association until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. “MORE ON KEEPING A DISTANCE”

“When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed a distance…” Exodus 20:18

This message is about responding to the awesome allpowering presence of Almighty God. The context is the giving of The Ten Commandments. It happened on a mountain called Sinai which was located in the wilderness. God was preparing God’s people for what God had prepared for them. God knew they needed the structure of law. Speaking of restrictions, Moses made many of them so that the people would understand Moses was standing on holy ground. While Moses was on the mountain with God, the people were keeping their distance. In fact they saw thunder and lightning, heard the trumpet and saw smoke on the mountain (Exodus 20:18). It is no wonder they “trembled with fear.” How do we respond to the awesome presence of our Holy God? 1. BY LISTENING TO GOD (Verse 19). The people of that time believed that no one could speak to God and live. Thus, they pleaded with Moses to speak for God. To know God is to listen to God. Occasionally when Jesus told stories of God’s kingdom He added the words, “Those who have ears to hear let them hear!” It has been said God speaks, and the church is our hearing aid. 2. BY RESPECTING GOD (Verse 20). The Bible says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). To fear God is to respect God. One of the ways we show respect for God is with our language (Exodus 20:7). The word profane comes from two Latin words – pro meaning “in front of” and fane meaning “temple.” A profane word is one you would not use in church. Other ways of showing respect include humbling ourselves before God, sharing God’s love and reaching out to those in need. 3. BY FOCUSING ON GOD (Verse 23). It is a fact of life that we become like that which we worship. Thus, the purpose of true worship is to praise God. Church architecture, the way a sanctuary is decorated, fine music and powerful preaching are intended to help us to focus on God. When we can see God in worship, then we can know we are focusing on the one true God. 4. BY BUILDING AN ALTAR TO GOD (Verse 24). Idol worship was common in Moses’ day. Therefore, the Lord said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites … do not make any gods to be alongside me; do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold…” (Verses 22-23). Modern day idols may include such things as money, fame, knowledge, pleasure and power. Jesus is our altar. Jesus was the Lamb of God who died for the sins of the world. He alone is our access to God the Father. Back in verse 21 we read, “The people of God remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was...” In other words, it is always best to distance ourselves from anything that distracts us from God.

Prayer: Dear Lord, sometimes it is good to stand back and behold Your glory. In Your strong name. Amen.
