After a life well lived, Charles ‘Chuck’ F Barton, Jr passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2024, in Kalamazoo with the love of his life Naomi Barton by his side He was born January 15, 1934, to Charles and Josephine Barton He had two sisters, JoAnn Vanderborgh and Catherine Peacock (now deceased) Chuck was blessed with two sons, Mike (Renko) Barton and Jon (Heather) Barton and two bonus sons, Rodney (Julie) Blaine and Eric (Paul Beasley) Blaine His blessings continued with 9 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews Chuck proudly served his country in the US Army A passionate educator, Chuck was a Social Studies and Physical Education teacher for Plainwell, White Cloud and Otsego Middle School for 33 years, retiring in 1993 He also enjoyed coaching and refereeing boys’ and girls’ sports Chuck loved students of all ages as they did him Chuck also set cemetery monuments for 50 years with his father and enjoyed selling RVs for several years He was a member of MEA, NEA, Allegan Historical Society, Otsego Historical Society, American Legion and Lifetime member of the Otsego United Methodist Church Chuck loved to play golf, shuffleboard and cards (especially euchre) and cribbage, as well as solve sudoku puzzles He loved fishing year-round He was also an avid reader It was always fun with his quick wit and use of puns Chuck could always bring a smile to your face Cremation has taken place A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 11:00 A M , at the Otsego United Methodist Church Burial of ashes will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego Contributions in memory of Chuck may be made to Christian Neighbors of Plainwell or Otsego Public School Foundation

Hazel Suzanne “Sue” (Cline) Hernandez, born on November 22, 1948, in Kalamazoo, has peacefully passed away She spent her early years attending Portage Public School in Kalamazoo before moving to Iowa to live with her grandparents Later in life, she returned to Kalamazoo and found lasting love with her husband, Frank Hernandez Hazel was a long-time sufferer of epilepsy, demonstrating incredible strength and resilience in the face of this challenge In the last several years, she faced a battle with cancer, showing remarkable courage throughout her journey until she finally succumbed Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Frank and her parents, Ensil “Slim” and Johanna “Jo” (Maas) Cline along with her oldest brother, James Cline She is survived by her older brother, Michael Cline of Plainwell, and leaves behind a legacy of love and memories for her family, including 2 nephews, Jim Cline of Kalamazoo, and Todd Cline of Climax Her memory lives on through 3 grandnieces and a grandnephew, as well as two great-great-grandnephews In accordance with her wishes, Hazel's cremation has already taken place In honor of her love for animals and her enduring spirit, contributions to your local dog shelter in her name would be greatly appreciated Hazel's kindness, warmth, unwavering strength, and the grace with which she faced her health challenges will be dearly missed, but her spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her The family would like to extend a special thank you to Senior Care Partners P A C E , a wonderful program that provided invaluable support during Hazel's illness They would also like to express their gratitude to Centrica Care Navigators, an exceptional Hospice care group that offered compassionate care and assistance during her final days

David passed away, Monday, August 26, 2024, at his home in Plainwell He was born June 24, 1936, in Three Rivers, the son of John G and Mildred (Brinkman) Summers David worked at Eaton Corporation and retired from First of America Bank as vice president In his free time David loved restoring old cars He had a creative and mechanical mind and was electrically skilled He was an active member of the AFLCIO union and served many offices over the years David enjoyed hobby farming and raised beef cattle and crops Most of all he loved spending time with his family On May 26, 1984, he married Mary Tripp who survives Also surviving are his children, Tim (Valerie) Summers of Kalamazoo and Jill Summers of Texas; 9 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; siblings, Tom Summers, Karen Keene and Mike Summers along with several nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents and son, John Summers A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A M , Friday, August 30, 2024, at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell with Doug Fritz officiating Contributions in memory of David may be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital

Penny Jo Fuss left for her eternal resting place surrounded by her family at her home in Allegan, MI on August 27, 2024 How do you sum up a lifetime of memories and love in a few short paragraphs? We will try Although Penny’s last couple years were a struggle with her dementia diagnosis, she was loved so very deeply through the end You could often hear her laughing about small and silly things (like snorting at her), see her smiling at her closest family, and although she forgot a lot, you could still feel her love every day Watching her slip away was incredibly hard, but knowing she was happy, and that she is finally home, means the world to her family Penny was born on November 1, 1954, to her parents, Martin and Bernadine Myland She was the youngest of four children She later gained a stepfather, John Munro, who was a bright light in everyone’s life Even after the death of her mom and dad, John was considered a father figure and stayed in the kids’ life until his passing She loved her siblings (Darrell, Woody, and Peggy), and they were close growing up Penny met the love of her life, Doug Fuss, and they were married on May 4, 1979 Together they had 2 children, Heather and Kyle She loved her kids more than anything, and always put them first Penny was able to stay at home with her children while they were young because of the hard work of Doug She later worked at Hallmark where she was known as “The Hallmark Lady” to many customers, working there for many years until she officially retired Seven years ago, she was ecstatic to welcome her grandson, Everette Fuss, whom she adored Her grandson Kalvin Ruthruff was also a bright spot in her life, and she was proud of all his accomplishments and genuine heart You always saw a smile on her face when either of the boys were around Penny loved both her kids’ spouses, Lenny and Angelea, and accepted them with open arms They were/are definitely treated as part of the family Penny and Doug celebrated their 45th anniversary before Penny’s passing Doug honored his vows and took care of her in sickness and health, keeping her at home to care for her with the help of family and Hospice He was determined not to send her to a nursing home It was emotional and hard, but he pushed on and kept that promise to her Breaking her family’s hearts, Penny passed on August 27th, 2024 She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father; sister Peggy; and brother Darrell She is survived by her husband, Doug; children, Heather (Leonard) Ruthruff and Kyle (Angelea) Fuss; her two grandsons; and her brother, Woody Myland She will be missed more than she could ever imagine, because she left her beautiful smile and caring nature everywhere she went So long and see you again one day to the best wife, mom, and grandma You are so, so very loved The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, from 10:30AM to 12:00PM and a funeral service will begin at 12:00PM at Gorden Funeral Residence in the Hopkins Chapel Immediately following the service at the funeral home Penny will be laid to rest in Sacred Heart Cemetery A luncheon at Sacred Heart Church will follow the committal service In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to make a donation in Penny s name to Elara Caring Hospice, who was phenomenal to work with, and cared for Penny like she was family You can donate to their website at https://elaracaringhospicefoundation org/ Arrangements by Gorden Funeral Residence - Hopkins Messages of condolence may be posted at www gordenfuneral com

Do you have a place of peace, a location where you can go to be with God free from disruption and distraction? Moses used to “pitch a tent outside of camp” where “the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend” (Exodus 33:7-11) Moses had an established place, away from the hustle and bustle, to meet with God in silence and solitude God was eager to meet with Moses and is chomping at the bit to meet with us When we show up to meet with God, he is already there waiting to meet with us
So where is your tent of meeting? Do you have a designated quiet place where you can commune with the most loving, most powerful, most intelligent being in the universe- God? My “tent” has changed over the years When my kids were toddlers, my tent of meeting with God was in the bathroom That seemed to be the only place I could hide from my kids During another season, I found that my best tent of meeting with God was out in nature, taking a long walk in the woods (sometimes with a fly-fishing rod on my hand) Today my tent is in the library room of my house I show up there every morning usually around 5:30/6:00, and God shows up there too I pray and sing to God as he fills me with comfort, guidance, forgiveness, and peace
I have found a direct correlation between my prayer life and my level of joy When I am meeting with God on a regular basis, I am full of contentment, joy, and peace no matter what is going on around me When I neglect meeting with God, due to busyness or distraction, I experience a miserable lack of joy- even when things are going pretty well The bottom line is that the God who made, knows, and loves you wants to meet with you on a regular basis and speak with you “as one speaks to a friend ” Do you want to be with Him as much as He wants to be with you? Then pick your tent of meeting and show up there regularly You’ll be glad you did
