At the young age of 94, Dee Snyder has been a loyal and faithful volunteer for Christian Neighbors for the last 20 years! It all started when a friend of hers, Helen Thompson, who also volunteered, shared with her how she loved serving at Christian Neighbors. Dee then contacted Terri Shaler (Executive Director) to meet up with her and see how she could help. She has been a regular volunteer on Tuesday afternoons ever since. Dee remembers working in the old building in Otsego when our pantry was a small building smaller than a one car garage. She also fondly remembers working with her good friend Barb Darrow. She stated that she is “Happy I have the opportunity to make a difference.” Terri says, “Dee’s presence and commitment to serving others models to us all that we can continue to do what we love even into our golden years. She’s an inspiration to all.”

She was born on August 13, 1916 at home in Prairieville Township, the daughter of Fred and Clara (Willmont) Hughes. On September 21, 1937, Marie married the love of her life, Willard F. Waters, who preceded her in death on May 21, 1990. Marie was a true farm girl who could do anything on the farm. She loved being outdoors, spending time with her dogs, and was a wonderful cook. Marie was an accomplished china painter. She was a fan of the Detroit Tigers and enjoyed watching their games. Marie was a former member of the Plainwell Presbyterian Church. Most importantly, Marie loved her family who will dearly miss her. She is survived by her loving son, David (Dawn) Waters; 5 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; 1 great-great-great grandchild; extended family, Brian Stearns; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Willard Waters; son, Gerald Waters. Funeral services took place September 7, 2019. Burial at Prairieville Cemetery. Paul “Punk” BOYSEN

Glenn passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at Rose Arbor in Kalamazoo. He was born July 8, 1947 in Alma, the son of Joe and Althea VanderVeen. Glenn proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. For 37 years he worked at Parker Hannifin until his retirement in 2006. Glenn enjoyed collecting political buttons, volunteering with the veterans at the Allegan County Fair, going to Tigers games and fishing. Glenn loved spending time with his grandchildren and family. Surviving are his daughters, Sheila Frisch, Pam (Steve) Smecka and Glenda (Kenny) Strojny all of Plainwell; 4 grandchildren, Danny Vannoller, Chase Strojny, Vince Smecka and Bryson Strojny; brother, Dean (Annabelle) VanderVeen of Birch Run along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Alvin Frisch and sister, Betty. Friends may visit with Glenn’s family from 5-7 P.M, Sunday, September 15, 2019 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a funeral service will take place at 11:00 A.M., Monday, September 16, 2019 with Pastor Kevin Smith officiating. Paul passed away on September 7, 2019 at Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. Punk was born on March 23, 1947 in Lansing, Michigan to Paul E. and Adeline G. (Bacon) Boysen. On May 3, 1975, Punk married the love of his life, Peggy Ann Hayes, in Otsego. He worked as a truck driver for 47 years and retired after 24 years at Grand Rapids Gravel in 2008. Punk was a proud veteran and served in the US Army during the Vietnam War, serving one year overseas. He was a member of the VFW Post 422 in Delton. Punk enjoyed spending time outdoors, his hobbies included golfing, fishing, and riding motorcycles. Most of all, he loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. Punk will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 44 years, Peggy Boysen; children, Kim Stevenson (Chris Ortega), Toni (Jim) McDonald, Michelle Wesaw, Laura (Tony) Graff, Scott (Melissa) Boysen, John (Cheryl) Boysen, Todd Boysen; brothers, Kris (Deb) Boysen, Roger (Yvonne) Boysen; sisters, Sue (Juan) Hernandez, Lisa (Jeff) Garrett; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held September 11, 2019. Pastor Rich Sheldon officiated. Burial took place at Oak Hill Cemetery in Orangeville Township with full military honors by the American Legion Post 45. Doug owned and operated Bunker Insurance Group in Otsego for over 20 years. Doug loved playing and coaching baseball and enjoyed following Notre Dame Football and the Chicago Cubs. On September 28, 1991 at Allegan Congregational Church he married Julie Cook who survives. Also surviving are his daughters, Brianna Bunker of Kent City and Kaylee Bunker of Otsego; sister, Gail Van Polen of Allegan; several nieces and his dog Peanut, who was like a son to Doug. He was preceded in death by his parents. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Contributions in memory of Doug may be made to Kalamazoo Christian Schools. The quotes below may come under the heading “Who would have ever thought?” The following comments were made in the year 1955:

• “I’ll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it’s going to be impossible to buy a week’s groceries for $20.00.”

• “Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won’t be long before $2,000 will only buy a used one.”

• “Did you hear that the Post Office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?”

• “When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday be 29 cents a gallon?”

• “I never thought I would see the day when all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.”

• “There is no sense in going to Lincoln or Omaha anymore for a weekend. It costs nearly $15 a night to stay in a hotel.”

My point: Change is inevitable. Change can be good or bad. Real change is the kind of change that renews us from within. In reflecting back on his extraordinary ministry, the late Evangelist Billy Graham once remarked, “Everything in the 20th century changed except the human heart. Only God can change the human heart.”

When Jesus said we must be “born again” (John 3:3), He was referring to God changing us from within. When we invite Christ into our lives, God gives us a new name (John 10:14), a new heart (Ezekiel 36:26), a new attitude (Romans 12:2) a new foundation (Matthew 7:24-27) and eventually a new home (Revelation 21:5). Therefore, some things never change. Faith, hope and love never change! God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are eternal! As long as we stay anchored in God’s Word, obedient to God’s Spirit and faithful in God’s service, we will have what it takes to survive in our changing world. He is “the same yesterday, today and forever”!
