OBITUARIES Dennis T. NELSON AGE 69 • OTSEGO, MI
Dennis passed away Thursday, September 17, 2020 at his home in Otsego. He was born November 8, 1950 in Flint the son of David and Gladys “Skip” (Marks) Nelson. Dennis loved music and was a musician. He was a member of several bands over the years including Wrkshop, Black Cat Bone and harmonica player for the Nelson Brothers Band. Dennis was an inspiration to many upcoming musicians. He was known to many as Denny “Never Out of Breath” Nelson. He opened for Johnny Winter and 38 Special and played many bike nights with his son Cory at the Tenth Street Saloon in Plainwell. Nothing made Dennis happier than being Papa to his loved granddaughter, Layla, she was the light of his life. In his free time he enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing with his son and attending concerts with his wife. On April 17, 1982 in Martin he married Joyce Doss who survives. Also surviving are his son, Cory (Ashley) Nelson of Otsego; his granddaughter, Layla who he adored; step-son, Caine Johnson of Plainwell; step-granddaughter, Nara; siblings, Curtis Nelson of Plainwell, David Nelson of Kalamazoo and Craig (Kathy) Nelson of Otsego along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A jam session to celebrate Dennis will be held at 5:00 P.M., Saturday, September 26, 2020 at the Tenth Street Saloon in Plainwell. Contributions in memory of Dennis may be made to a scholarship fund for his granddaughter, Layla’s education. “GUILT AND GRACE”

Our Pastor, Joe Shaler, recently preached a series of sermons entitled “Expect Grace.” He stated that he got the idea from a sign that was made for Otsego Public Schools entitled, “Expect Excellence.” So he had a sign made with the words “Expect Grace.” By the way, the sign was made by Starr Machining, a family I know very well!
What is meant by “Expect Grace.” Before we can answer the question it will be helpful to draw a contrast between guilt and grace. God made us so that when we sin, we feel it. This is called guilt. In order to relieve our guilt from sinning, God offers a way out. The way out is called grace … God’s unconditional, unmerited and sometimes unexpected gift. In I John 1:9 we read, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” In other words, Jesus died on the cross to forgive us of our sins.
Grace is stronger than any sin we commit. Hence, the above verse, “But where sin increased, grace increased all the more…” (Romans 5:20). Here is another way of explaining it. Guilt convicts; Grace acquits! Guilt condemns; Grace commends! Guilt shames; Grace saves! Guilt enslaves; Grace emancipates Guilt captivates; Grace liberates Guilt is a burden; Grace is a blessing
This leads us to make a decision. Either we may choose to suffer guilt or confess our sins and receive grace (forgiveness). We need to expect grace in our relationship with God, our relationship with others and in our relationship to ourselves.
Thus, when it comes to guilt and grace … choose grace!

Sad news from Otsego, MI. Jean Marie Doubblestien went home to be with the lord on September 14, 2020. She was 76 years of age. Jean was a wife to Dan Doubblestien (Sr); mother to Daniel W. Doubblestien Jr., Dana Anderson (Digby) and Tammy Ginebaugh (Digby). Also, she was a grandmother to 7 and a greatgrandmother to 4. Jean met her husband at a mutual friend’s card game north of Otsego, MI during the late 60’s. The two knew instantly that they would be together and made their vows in 1969. With almost 50 years together, Jean stayed right next to Dan’s side until he passed in July 2019. Jean was a kind and strong lady, that loved her family dearly. She had a heart for those in need and often sacrificed to help. Jean also enjoyed country living, gardening and country western movies. Last, as Jean always said, “There’s a time and a place for everything...” Those that would like to pay their respects and have some fellowship time with the family are invited to do so. The event will be held on September 26th at 12:00PM (noon) Address: 1096 11th St. Plainwell, MI. (North of the Gun River Trap and Skeet Club). This will be a casual event—no black suits needed. Jane passed away suddenly, Saturday, September 12, 2020, due to a fall. Jane was born September 28, 1939, in Douglas, Michigan, to Thomas and Winnifred Osborne. She was a devoted mother to four children. She loved her 12 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren. She loved knitting blankets for her family and friends, reading James Patterson books and riding on the golf cart. She is preceded in death by her parents, a twin sister (Jeannie Town), a son (William Trolard) and a grandson (Jeremiah Evans). She leaves behind three daughters; Kathy (Jerry) Pinks, Sally (Rick) Sapp and Connie Pierce; her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, a sister Sally (Carl) Harvey and several nieces and nephews. A memorial will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Agape Hospice, 1800 Paris Avenue, Port Royal, SC 29935.
