Otsego Main Street is currently fundraising for the construction of a new Riverfront Pavilion in downtown Otsego, near the Otsego Museum. The Riverfront Pavilion will be a multi-use year-round space for the Otsego Farmer's Market, used for community events and activities, and a sheltered ice rink in the winter.

We have already raised $200,000 needed for this $300,000 structure. If we are able to raise an additional $50,000 from September 1st to November 1st, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation will match our $50,000 with an additional $50,000, bringing us to the $300,000 needed to build the pavilion.

These two cuties came to the shelter because their previous owner had some health issues and it was decided that it would be best for Gizmo and Al to find a new forever home.

Gizmo (dad) is seven years old, and Al (son) is a little less than two years old. Both fellas get along with some dogs, but cats make them both uncomfortable. AGE 88 - KALAMAZOO, MI

Rex passed away Saturday, August 31, 2019 at his home in Allegan. He was born November 9, 1954 in Plainwell the son of Charles and Betty (Fuller) Burkhead. Rex had worked at Perrigo for 21 years until his retirement in 2000. He had also delivered the Flashes in Allegan for many years. In his free time he liked working with ham radios and spending time with “the gang”, his family.

Rex enjoyed volunteering at DHS for over 10 years.

He was a member of the National Federation of the Blind and had attended the School for the Blind. On February 12, 1983 he married Lorna Livingston who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Norene (Paul Preston) Burkhead and son, Daniel Burkhead; special side kick, Jayce; sister, Judy Burkhead and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by parents; brother, Carl; sister, Marie and a niece and a nephew. Services were held September 4, 2019. Pastor Alan Carson officiated. Burial at Oakhill Cemetery in Orangeville.

Contributions in memory of Rex may be made to the Merson Church or the National Federation of the Blind.

Bob passed away Sunday, September 1, 2019 at his home in Kalamazoo. He was born February 4, 1931 in Watervliet, the son of Gaylord and Velma (Learn) Caswell.

For 33 years Bob worked for Hoekstra Roofing until his retirement in the early 80’s. After retiring he had worked at a campground for 16 years. Bob enjoyed woodworking, doing jigsaw and word puzzles, fishing, trips to the casino, especially Las Vegas and playing yahtzee. He loved spending time with his family especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In October 1950 in Otsego he married Martha Winans who survives. Also surviving are his children, Janice (Donald) Stanfill of Otsego and Janet (Bryan) Johnson of Missouri; daughterin-law, Cheryl Caswell of Otsego, 5 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Virginia Winn of Plainwell, Eugene Caswell of Kalamazoo and Nancy Lapp of Colorado along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robin; siblings, Ira, Philip and Rosie and brothers-in-law, Woody Winn and Don Blackman. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Contributions in memory of Bob may be made to the American Heart Association.

L a w re n c e passed away Monday, September 2, 2019 at his home in Martin. He was born April 20, 1935 in Kalamazoo, the son of Harold and Mary (Erkenbeck) Bean.

He proudly served his country in the U. S Army. For 30 years he had worked at Checker Motors until his retirement in 1994. In his free time Lawrence enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church, the Otsego Moose Lodge and Otsego Knights of Columbus. On May 14, 1957 in Colon, Panama, he married Gloria Stanfield who passed away in 2004. Surviving are his children, Susan (Bill) Bean, Jackie Youngs, Paul (Mendy) Bean, Lawrence Jr. “Boy” (Kim) Bean; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and 1 great-greatgranddaughter; sister, Sheila Campbell; brothers, Norm (MaryLou) Bean, Larry (JoAnn) Bean and Tim Bean Sr.; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sisters, Sandra Bean, Joan Miller and Dawn Tewe and stepmother, Crystal Bean. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will take place at a later time. Contributions in memory of Lawrence may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice.

If good health, good fortune, status, power and financial security are signs of human strength, what are the signs of spiritual strength? Consider the following examples: 1. When we admit our need for God (Matthew 5:6).

Ignorance, unbelief (I Timothy 1:13) selfish pride and indifference are the greatest obstacles to admitting our need for God. The fact is none of us are sufficient unto ourselves. To admit our need for God is a sign of strength, not weakness.

This may mean admitting we are wrong about something. C.S. Lewis said the root of all sin is “being too big for your boots, forgetting your place, thinking that you are God” (The Quotable Lewis, Tyndale House, l989, page 214).

Humility is a sign of strength, not weakness.

3. When we confess our sins to God (I John 1:9).

David was Israel’s greatest king, yet he sinned before God. Instead of blaming someone else, he humbly confessed his sins to God (Psalm 51:1). David was speaking for all sinners when he wrote about the blessing of forgiveness (Psalm 32:1). Confession is a sign of strength, not weakness.

4. When we allow our lives to be shaped by God’s Word (Psalm 119:105).

5. When we put our trust in God (Psalm 141:8).

6. When we do what is right (Romans 12:21).

The Bible talks about “overcoming evil with good” (Romans 12:21). We commonly call this “taking the high road.” This begins in the mind. Positive thoughts lead to positive actions (Philippians 4:8). Doing what is right honors God and is a sign of strength, not weakness.

7. When we can allow God to turn our weaknesses into strengths (2 Corinthians 12:l0).

The reason Apostle Paul was able to withstand “weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions and difficulties” was because he allowed Christ to turn his weaknesses into strengths. We are always stronger when God is working in our lives. Therefore, weakness is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Prayer: Dear Lord gives us the kind of strength only You can give. Amen.
