Cars to Be Sold For $88 Due to an extreme overstock of pre-owned vehicles, Seelye Wright of South Haven is celebrating The Season with the $88 Slasher Sale this Saturday, November 26, 2011 vehicles will be available for this event. “We absolutely must reduce our used inventory at all costs,” said Eric. “So customers can expect these vehicles to be sold at rock bottom prices regardless of the loss. Cars that would normally sell for $1,000 to $2,000 will sell for as little as $88. Cars that would normally sell for $3,000 to $12,000 will be thousands and thousands lower. There’s truly a vehicle for everyone’s budget.” Due to the large response expected for this event, those wishing to buy should register prior to the $88 Slasher Sale. Customers are strongly encouraged to register throughout the week during normal business hours at Seelye Wright of South Haven. Customers may also register at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, the day of the sale. Here’s how the $88 Slasher Sale works: All vehicles will be opened at 8:00 a.m., so buyers can inspect the vehicles for one hour before the sale starts at 9:00 a.m. The retail price will be posted on the windshield of each vehicle. When the $88 Slasher Sale begins at 9:00 a.m. the price cutter will cross out the retail price on

each vehicle and replace it with the new Slasher Sale price. Whoever is sitting behind the wheel will be given the opportunity to purchase the vehicle. Seelye Wright of South Haven will have finance and credit specialists on-hand to prequalify buyers prior to the sale. “We’ll have some of the most open-minded lenders in the area at this event,” said Eric Thorns. “Even if you’ve had trouble obtaining auto financing in the past, don’t count yourself out. If you bring a current payroll stub and your driver’s license, chances are we can arrange financing for you.”

South Haven, MI–Management of Seelye Wright of South Haven has just announced its plan to sell off its used vehicle inventory to the public by means of an $88 Slasher Sale this Saturday, November 26, 2011. During this one-day event, every used vehicle will be sold for thousands below original price, including cars for just $88. Why price them so low? According to Eric Thorns, of Seelye Wright of South Haven, sales of new vehicles over the last few months have resulted in an overload of trade-ins. During the $88 Slasher Sale, every car, truck, van and sport utility vehicle will be offered for hundreds to thousands of dollars below the original price. Seelye Wright of South Haven has decided to offer these vehicles to the public at discounted rates before they go to auction. “The community has shown us great support throughout the years,” said Eric. “We are grateful. We would rather give these deals to the public than incur the expense of sending these vehicles to auction.” A huge selection of pre-owned cars, trucks, vans and sport utility

Give ‘Til It Feels Good By Ann M. Bare For many, the Christmas holiday has evolved into nothing more than buying a bunch of gifts for a bunch of people and getting a bunch of gifts that cost a bunch of people a whole bunch of money. Gifts, gifts, gifts. Is that what this season is all about? There are many reasons to celebrate the Christmas season and many ways in which to celebrate it. Giving gifts is one of those many ways. However, perhaps some of us need to reconsider our motives and expectations in gift giving. Perhaps we can learn from those who have looked more deeply than the names and items on a written-out list and the credit card's limit. As you ponder this year's purchases, consider these thoughts and examine your motives: • Rich gifts wax poor when givers prove unkind. William Shakespeare • The greatest gift you can give another is the purity of your attention. -Richard Moss • May no gift be too small to give, nor too simple to

receive, which is wrapped in thoughtfulness, and tied with love. -L.O. Baird • You may give gifts without caring, but you can't care without giving. -Frank A. Clark • When I give, I give myself. -Walt Whitman • There is no benefit in the gifts of a bad man. Euripides • What is a true gift? One for which nothing is expected in return. -Chinese Proverb • The spirit in which a thing is given determines that in which the debt is acknowledged; it's the intention, not the face value of the gift, that's weighed. -Lucius Annaeus Seneca • Give! Give the love you have received to those around you. You must love with your time, your hands, and your hearts. You need to share all that you have. Mother Teresa When our motives are pure, we may find that the reward in giving is more than just seeing someone smile and hearing a thank you: • You always get back much more than you give. -Jimmy Carter

• We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. -Winston Churchill • Generous people are rarely mentally ill. -Karl Menninger • To give without any reward, or any notices, has a special quality of its own. -Ann Morrow Lindbergh • In the sphere of material things, giving means being rich. Not he who has much is rich, but he who gives much. -Erich Fromm You can buy things and you can give gifts, but will your present reflect your genuine appreciation for the receiver? Will your gift simply fulfill an obligation or will it show you care? Maybe this is the year to put a little more thought into the gift selection process. Considering the wisdom of those who have gone before, you may find yourself in the midst of a merrier Christmas.

Christmas 2011 - Birth of a New Tradition

Small Business Saturday® The 2nd annual Small Business Saturday® is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year. On November 26, we’re asking millions of Americans to Shop Small at their favorite local stores and help fuel the economy.

When we all shop small, it will be huge.

Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains - this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open. How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy? Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day. My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running. OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes. Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre. Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands. Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand foreign made lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip. You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets for foreign profit. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging

away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine. THIS is the new American Christmas tradition. “Forward this to everyone on your mailing list -- post it to discussion groups -- throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in your city -- send it to the editor of your local paper and radio stations, and TV news departments. This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn't that what Christmas is about?” (Taken from an email, original origin unknown.)

As the holidays approach, factories in other countries are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of massed produced goods. Merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is! It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper? Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber? Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement. Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates. Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamin's on a foreign made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course. There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants - all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint.

Thanksgiving Day Activities For The Family Aside from the turkey, what many people look forward to on Thanksgiving Day is spending the day in front of the television watching football. In some circles, that means that the football fans end up in front of the TV while the rest of the family does something else. What do you do if football just isn't your sport? Are there other things you can do to make it a day with your family? Here are a few ideas. Take a walk. When you spend some time outdoors, you'll experience the changing colors and get a look at what is happening in your neighborhood. Whether you go for a short walk or a long walk, it will help with digestion of a big meal. It can also help to stave off the sleepiness that comes after a big meal. The exercise will give you the opportunity to get away from the kitchen, where so many spend so much time in preparation for the holidays. If you want a little more exercise, why not celebrate football with a game of touch on your own? Head down to your local park or just out to the backyard and set up a game. You can get very physical or have a light and easy game, depending on who is attending your dinner.

Make crafts with the kids. All you really need is construction paper and some glue, and you can create centerpieces for your Thanksgiving table or special holiday gifts or cards that you can send out during the upcoming Christmas season. If you get more involved, have the kids pick up pinecones and buy some glitter. These can be used to create pinecone turkeys that will last for a long time or they can be sent home as souvenirs of the day. Thanksgiving can also be used as a day of service, to really generate appreciation for the abundance in your life. Many people choose to donate blood with other family members. You can also spend time with your favorite organization that helps those in need, or you can start a new tradition and volunteer at a homeless shelter or a soup kitchen. When the meal is complete and the dishes are done, there's no reason you have to consign yourselves to hours in front of the television. (Of course, that might be exactly what you want to do.) You can spend time with the family and create new traditions over the course of the years to truly make the day a celebration of family.

hours to prepare the balloons for the parade and finesse to keep them in position throughout the parade. The inflation starts the night before and has turned into quite the event. People gather along the streets surrounding the American Museum of Natural History to watch the hundreds of volunteers unfold the balloons, weight them down and pump them with helium. It takes about six hours to inflate a balloon. The balloons are carefully guided along the parade route the next morning by 25 to 50 handlers. While a wonderful asset, the balloons are not without risk. In spite of officials' best efforts to keep the balloons a safe attraction for one and all, accidents do happen. In 1957, the hat on one of the balloons filled with rain and doused spectators. In 1997, high winds whipped a balloon into a lamppost, toppling it over and injuring innocent bystanders. In 2005, another balloon struck a lamppost, injuring a couple of spectators. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade balloons are a big hit with viewers. Without them, the parade just wouldn't be the same.

The balloons had address labels on them and anyone who found one after it descended could return it to the address for a small prize. Eventually the sweepstakes balloons gave way to bigger and better character balloons resembling those of today. Characters have come and gone over the years, with many advertisers introducing their company characters into the mix. In 1941, the parade featured an Uncle Sam balloon in support of the war. When rubber became scarce, Macy's retired the balloon and donated it to the war effort. Making a balloon for the parade is a labor-intensive process. First, the balloon must be sketched and evaluated by an engineer. If the design receives the goahead, a clay model of the balloon is built to scale, while a second model is created and painted. Finally, the pieces of the actual balloon are cut from polyurethane and assembled. The balloon is tested for leaks and completed in time for the parade. Because of their massive size, it takes

Flip on the TV Thanksgiving morning, and chances are you'll catch a glimpse of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. While the parade has much to offer viewers from dazzling floats to live performances to the arrival of the man in red himself, many tune in specifically for the balloons. Filled with helium and floating high above the New York City streets, the balloons are an awesome sight. Although a major feature today, the balloons were not always a part of the parade. When the parade began in 1924, live animals from the Central Park Zoo were the main attraction. In 1927, balloons began appearing in the parade, with Felix the Cat the first. The balloons were inflated with air the first year and then with helium from then on. The helium balloons were originally part of a 1929 store promotion and released at the end of the parade. The first year, the balloons popped. The second year, they were redesigned so that they would release helium gradually and float for several days.

beads on a string. Homeowners had to hire a "wireman" to stab the mess together, much as you'll have to call someone to get your new computer online tomorrow. In 1900, some large stores started to put up large illuminated trees to attract customers. Members of high society began hosting Christmas Tree parties. These were grand events since a typical lighted tree of the early 1900s cost upwards of $300 (more than $2000 in today’s dollars), including the generator and wireman´s services. In 1903, The American Eveready Co. came out with the first humane Christmas light set, including screw-in bulbs and a plug for the wall socket. In 1908, Ralph Morris came up with the idea of pulling the lights from an old telephone switchboard and wiring them on a tree, running them from a battery. The person responsible for popularizing Christmas tree lighting is Albert Sadacca. A tragic fire in New York City in 1917, caused by the continuing practice of lighting the highly flammable tree with candles, gave 15-year-old Albert Sadacca an idea. Now it just so happened that Albert’s family, who had come from Spain, had a novelty business selling wicker cages with imitation birds in them that lit up. Albert suggested to his parents that they begin making electric lights for Christmas trees. They had lots of bulbs on hand, and it would be much safer than using candles. The Sadacca's thought Albert had a good idea, but only one hundred strings of electric Christmas tree lights sold in the first year. After Albert thought of painting the bulbs red, green, and other colors instead of using plain glass, business picked up sharply. Albert became the head of a multimillion dollar company. This company, started by Albert Sadacca and his two brothers, Henri and Leon had a slow first year but the New York City novelty store grew into NOMA Electric Company and quickly became the largest Christmas lighting company in the world. They lost their edge in 1965 to international competition.

The first Christmas Trees were lit with candles and many were the cause of damaging house fires.

People first started putting lights on Christmas trees back in the middle of the 17th century. They attached small candles to the ends of tree branches with wax or pins. Before electricity was widely available, people didn't usually put up their trees until December 24 because of the risk of fire. Once electric Christmas tree lights were invented, people started to put up trees earlier, and leave them up longer. The American custom of using electric lights began in 1882 when Edward Johnson an associate of Thomas Edison, hand-wired 80 red, white and blue bulbs and wound them around a rotating evergreen tree. Then, in 1895, President Grover Cleveland set up a lighted Christmas tree in the White House and the general public began to notice. So began the tradition. General Electric (Edison's company) began bringing good things to light as the 1800s came to a close, offering hand-blown bulbs that needed to be wired together like

Kiss, Please By Tresa Erickson When preparing for the holiday season, people observe various traditions from decorating a Christmas tree to hanging stockings from the mantel to tying a sprig of mistletoe in a doorway. Anyone familiar with the mistletoe tradition knows that meeting under it often ends in a kiss, as the song "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" alludes to. But what is the history behind the mistletoe tradition? Although parasitic by nature, mistletoe has long been considered a mystical, magical plant. Many ancient cultures believed the plant to heal sickness, protect life and enhance love and fertility. Europeans often hung it over the entrances to their homes, barns and stables to ward off bad spirits.

Legend has it that couples in love that kiss beneath the mistletoe will one day marry and have a long, happy life together.

The plant was also considered a symbol of peace in many cultures. The Druids, for example, believed it to be so powerful that warring clans would cease

battle upon the first sight of the plant. In Scandinavia, individuals meeting under it in conflict could declare a truce or kiss and make up. In the Norse myth of the death of the god Balder, the mistletoe has potent but promising properties. Balder dreams he is going to die and tells his mother Frigga. Alarmed, Frigga secures promises from everything and everyone not to harm Balder, except for the mistletoe. Aware of this, the mischievous god Loki tricks the blind god Hoder into shooting Balder with an arrow made of

mistletoe. Balder dies, much to Frigga's horror. As Frigga sheds tears on the mistletoe plant, its berries turn white. Eventually Frigga brings Balder back to life, and in celebration, kisses everyone she meets under the mistletoe. From that day forward, the mistletoe brings only kisses of joy to those who come into contact with it. The tradition of kissing under the mistletoe was the basis of kissing balls held in England during the 18th century. Any girl caught beneath the mistletoe could not refuse a kiss of friendship or love and would be married within a year. Today, in some parts of England, the mistletoe must be burned on the 12th night so that all of young men and women who have kissed beneath it may marry. Mistletoe remains a holiday tradition associated with kissing in many countries today. People often hang up a sprig of mistletoe in a doorway or room and exchange a kiss whenever they meet beneath it. Legend has it that couples in love that kiss beneath the mistletoe will one day marry and have a long, happy life together.

Hank is a gentle giant of a dog. He loves attention, and is very human-oriented. He gets along well with other dogs, and with positive reinforcement, walks very well on a leash. He can be a bit vocal sometimes when trying to get your attention, but we think that is because he is missing his old family. Hank just needs to be loved and to feel safe again in his new home. Diligence is the mother of good luck.

“BEING THANKFUL FOR WHAT WE HAVE” “Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” – Philippians 4:6 It has been said, “Gratitude is the believer’s first response to God.” That is because we have so much to be thankful for … Jesus Christ … the Bible … the Church … Salvation … Resurrection … and Eternal Life to name a few. We can add to the list the everyday blessings we often take for granted such as family … friendships … democracy … and freedom. Most of us know people who are not rich in things but are rich in things that matter most. In one of the churches I served we sent out teams of two to visit members in their homes for the annual stewardship campaign. One team returned saying that a person they judged to have very little made a very generous commitment … a modern day example of the Biblical “widow’s mite.” We often do not appreciate what we have until we no longer have it. There is a wonderful story about a farmer who had lived on the same farm all his life, but now he desperately craved a change. So he decided to sell the old place and buy another more to his liking. He listed the farm with a real estate agent, who looked over the property and prepared an ad for the newspaper. The agent read to the farmer this very flattering description: “Beautiful farmhouse, ideal location, excellent barn, good pasture, fertile soil, up-to-date equipment, well-bred stock. Near town, near church, near school. Good neighbors.” “Wait a minute,” said the farmer. “Read that again.” And again the description was read, “Beautiful farmhouse, ideal location …” “Changed my mind,” said the farmer. “I’m not gonna sell. All my life I’ve been looking for a place just like that!” Again, we need to open our minds and eyes and be thankful for what we have. Prayer: Dear Lord, give me one thing more, a grateful heart. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Peace to you and please join us this Sunday in a church where “Jesus’ love is lived.”

COMMUNITY SHOPPERS GUIDE...OTSEGO, MI 49078...November 19, 2011....Phone 694-9431

November is Homelessness Awareness Month By helping Christian Neighbors help others, You May Win!! This is just one of the true stories of families helped by Christian Neighbors.... Jason and Amber were homeless for several months. Jason was hospitalized in Tennessee and almost lost his life. He has a heart condition and was on life support at one time. Jason is now in rehab, learning to walk again and improving his speech. Christian Neighbors has been blessed to help them find and secure affordable housing, help with budgeting and to provide food. Jason and Amber are preparing for the birth of their first child, and are grateful to Christian Neighbors for providing assistance, resources and hope. Not having a place of your own due to health conditions seems unfair. Not having the security of a home while pregnant can be traumatic. I’m thankful we were able to help this young couple. As the leaves are falling off the trees and frost is on the ground in the mornings, I’m very thankful they have a place of their own. I’m always thoughtful of others who may be homeless or just a paycheck away. Let November (Homeless Awareness Month) be a time you thank God for the security of being able to sleep in your own warm bed. I challenge you also to remember all those who don’t.

Christian Neighbors has been serving the most vulnerable individuals and households within our community since 1983.

WE PROVIDE: Food boxes each month for those who need it. Emergency financial assistance with rental evictions, utility shut-offs and needed prescriptions. Financial management classes to the general public. Personalized budgeting and mentoring to those who need a little help. Veteran Service Officer available 1st & 3rd Tuesday of each month. Free tax clinic through United Way Partnership (February 4, 2012). Help with food stamp applications.

"Neighbors Caring for Neighbors"

WE DEPEND ON YOU, OUR COMMUNITY NEIGHBORS,

TO HELP US IN THIS IMPORTANT WORK.

In 2010 we provided over $231,000 in emergency assistance and food to thousands of people in our

communities of Plainwell, Otsego & Martin.
