Bryson City is a charming mountain town primarily known for outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, boating, rafting, ziplining, horseback ridiing and biking. Here, you’ll find virtually none of the commercialism associated with our Tennessee neighbors. Instead, Bryson City is a fairly typical small town. Our businesses are locally-owned and southern hospitality is a way of life. We’re a little laid back and happy to be living in one of the most beautiful spots on the planet. We only have five traffic lights.
Exit 67 To Dillsboro Sylva Waynesville I-40 Asheville

There are plenty of options for week-long family vacations or couples looking for a nice weekend getaway. The town is easy to walk around to explore the shops, galleries, craft brewery and restaurants. From June through October you can enjoy free live music on Saturday nights at the train depot.

To Do: Deep Creek
Only
a few minutes from downtown Bryson City, you’ll find Deep Creek – one of three entrances to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park located in Swain County. nly a few minutes from downtown Bryson City, you’ll find Deep Creek – one of three entrances to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park located in Swain County. Filled with day hike opportunities – including an easy walk to three waterfalls – creek tubing, fishing, picnicking and mountain biking, the area is a favorite of families as a fun and economical outdoor recreation option.
Waterfall Hike & Back Country Trails Deep Creek offers a trio of spectacular cascades that are an easy hike – even for small children or strollers. Three Waterfalls Loop is 2.4 miles and features Tom Branch Falls, Juney Whank Falls and Indian Creek Falls, or do each separately. Deep Creek is also a jumping off point for longer hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a vast wilderness with eight hundred miles of back country trails just waiting to be explored. Tubing Floating down the cool and pristine waters of Deep Creek is by far one of the favorite pastimes for families. Carry your tube up the wide, gentle trail following the creek; then float back down again and again. There are several places to launch, both above the more challenging rapids and below for those who want a more peaceful drift down the stream. Fishing Deep Creek is one of the best cold water trout streams to be found in the Great Smokies. Anglers need a valid Tennessee or North Carolina fishing license – easily obtained at several locations in the Bryson City area – to fish within the national park. Picnicking A picnic area is open year round with plenty of tables and grills, restrooms and changing areas are also available.
Directions: To reach Deep Creek from Bryson City: turn onto Everett Street and head toward Depot Street. Make a right onto Depot, then turn left onto Deep Creek Road and keep going straight to reach the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. (See Bryson City map on page 10)
The Blue Ridge Parkway “America’s Favorite Drive” stretches from Cherokee, NC through Virginia. A nice short segment to drive would be the 26 miles from Cherokee to the Balsam Mountain exit at milepost 443, just west of Waynesville on US 74 or continue on to Asheville and make a day of it. The Dragon One of the most famous motorcycle and sport touring roads in the world, the Dragon offers 318 curves in 11 miles. To get there, take 74 West and 28 North and US 129 out of Robbinsville.
To Do: Go Scenic
Bryson City and the Great
Smokies are known for their scenic winding roads that showcase the natural beauty of the area while being totally accessible to all types of motor vehicles. So, hit the road and remember – all roads lead to Bryson City!
Newfound Gap US 441 twists and winds its way from the Oconaluftee River Valley up and over a 5,000 foot divide in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, offering long-range views, forested tunnels and rushing rivers. To Do: Heritage Museum
hroughout its lifetime as a working courthouse, this historical landmark of Bryson City, built in 1904, was home to many famous trials from murders to moonshine. After the new courthouse and administration building was created, the top floor of the historic courthouse was closed and the lower level was used as an activity center for Swain County’s seniors. After a new senior center was constructed, the community looked for another use for this icon of Bryson City. The answer was found in 2013 when work began to bring the courthouse back to life as a visitor’s center and heritage museum. Opening in Summer 2014, the Swain County Heritage Museum and Visitor’s Center will offer a comprehensive experience for the Bryson City visitor to enjoy. Tour the heritage museum and take a peek in the restored cabin to get a feel for the way of life that was enjoyed by some of the earlier settlers of Swain County. Or watch the interactive film for a more comprehensive view of history here in this corner of the Great Smokies. In the visitor’s center find all the information you need to plan your day to day activities or browse the gift store for more in depth literature and gifts to take back home. The Swain County Visitor’s Center will be open daily and the Heritage Museum will be open Monday through Saturday.
To Do: Fishing Whether you are fly fishing for native brook trout in a cold mountain stream, smallmouth or largemouth bass in beautiful Fontana Lake or rainbow or brown trout in one of the many stocked streams or rivers, Swain County and Bryson City hosts one of the most diverse fishing habitats in the world.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Nantahala National Forest offer hundreds of miles of spectacularly clear streams. Just a few minutes from Bryson City, the sparkling waters of Deep Creek are ripe for fly fishing, and many anglers enjoy the Nantahala River just west of town, particularly the section above the powerhouse on Wayah Road.
Fishing regulations
The Little Tennessee River just west of Bryson City off the Needmore Road is a wide, cold, boulder-strewn river - perfect for smallmouth bass, brim, rock bass and muskie.

The Cherokee Indian Reservation also offers a variety of fishing opportunities for the trout fisherman with regularly stocked streams, trophy waters and three trout ponds. Cherokee holds 4 tagged fish tournaments, a flyfishing tournament in the trophy waters and a trout derby for children every year.
For more information about North Carolina
If you prefer flat water fishing, Fontana Lake boasts one of the most diverse fish populations anywhere in the country. With depths of over 400 feet, many northern fish such as walleye, muskie and smallmouth bass are among favorites of local fishermen.
To fish in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, you must have either a valid North Carolina or Tennessee fishing license. You can purchase a basic North Carolina license for a period of one day, three days or one year. The one-day cost for a resident is $5 (non-resident is $10); one year is $15 (non-resident is $30). A 3-day non-resident fee is $15. If you plan to fish for trout “trout stamp is required at a cost of $10 (both resident and non-resident). Some of the trout streams are strictly catch-andrelease. fishing, go to NC Fish & Wildlife http:// www.ncwildlife.org/Learning/Species/ Fish/Trout/Troutfishing.aspx No license is required to fish in Cherokee Reservation waters, however a tribal permit is required. The cost is $10 per day; $17 for 2-day, $27 for 3-day, $47 for 5-day. Catch & Release Trophy Waters require an additional $75/year permit.

Geographically, Swain County is spectacular. Much of it lies within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including its highest peak, Clingmans Dome. Four scenic rivers, the Nantahala, the Tuckasegee, the Oconaluftee and the Little Tennessee flow through the county and form the sprawling Fontana Lake.
Swain County is ideally located for easy day trips to neighboring communities, the Tennessee side of the National Park and nearby Asheville and the Biltmore Estate.
