Northeast Georgia hiking options abound

Public access hiking trails are plentiful in Dawson, Habersham, Lumpkin, Rabun and White counties in Northeast Georgia. The following is a county-by-county listing with directions provided.

Dawson County Inside Amicalola State Park Amicalola Falls East Ridge Trail. This is a steady, strenuous climb to the top of Amicalola Falls; Amicalola Falls Trail. This is a steep, staired descent along the face of the waterfall to the reflecting pool, with a return to the visitors center along the base of falls trail. Depending on how you’re feeling, you can start at the top of the stairs and work your way down, or start at the base and go up. Either way, the views of Amicalola Falls are spectacular; Amicalola Falls West Ridge Trail. Explore the western ridge of Amicalola Falls on this shaded, quiet trail that crosses a small bridge and winds its way along a foot path to the visitors’ center; Southern Terminus Approach Trail to the Appalachian Trail. The southern terminus access trail begins behind the Amicalola Falls Visitors Center, climbs to the top of Amicalola Falls, crosses the road to the lodge and then climbs through

the Amicalola watershed to Springer Mountain.

State Route 53, west of downtown Dawsonville Amicalola River Trail. Hike to the “Edge of the World” rapids, then up to explore the 10,000-acre Dawson Forest Wildlife Management area. This is a user fee area and requires a Georgia Outdoor Recreation Pass. Call 1-800-366-2661 or go online to georgiawildlife.com/recreational-licenses in advance of your visit. Cost: $3.50 for a three-day individual pass or $19 annual.

Off Steve Tate Highway Wildcat Campground Trail. This features primitive campsites with no facilities and a flat, easy hike along Amicalola Creek. About one hour in, the terrain changes and a steep climb leads to Falls Creek Falls. Round-trip: approximately six hours. There is a wide water crossing with a hand rope for safety. Also, several steep rock climbs along the path.

Habersham County Broad River Trail. Take state Route 365 north from Cornelia. Take the Toccoa/Lavonia fork and stay on SR 365 for 1-1/2 miles. Turn right onto Rock Road. Drive 0.7 mile and turn left onto Dicks Hill Parkway. Travel

another 2.4 miles and turn left on Forest Service Road 87. Go 3 miles to reach the trailhead at Dicks Creek; Coleman River Trail. Take state Route 76 from Clayton for 8 miles. Turn right heading north on Persimmon Road (unnumbered) and drive 4 miles. Turn left heading northwest on Forest Service Road 70 and proceed 1.25 miles. The trailhead will be on your right; Lady Slipper Trail. Take U.S. Highway 441 (state Route 365) north from Cornelia to the first Clarkesville exit onto SR 197. From the exit, turn right onto SR 197. After reaching the second stop sign, turn right onto Dicks Hill Parkway. Travel 0.8 miles and turn left onto Lake Russell Road. Turn left toward Nancytown Lake and follow the signs to the parking area. The trailhead is located 0.2 mile behind the gate at a paved road; Lake Russell Trail. Take U.S. Highway 441 (state Route 365) north from Cornelia and exit at SR 197 toward Clarkesville. From the exit, turn right onto SR 197. At the second stop sign, turn left onto Lake Russell Road. Turn left toward Nancytown Lake and follow the signs for parking. The trailhead begins at the dam; Minnehaha Trail. Take U.S. Highway 441 north from Tallulah Falls for 3 miles to the Rabun Beach ▶

10 Recreation Area sign. Turn left on an unnumbered county road and follow the signs to the recreation area. Continue west for one mile past the recreation area before turning left onto Flat Creek Road across the river below Seed Lake Dam. Follow the left fork of the road for 1.7 miles until you reach a sign marking the trail on the right side of the road; Panther Creek Trailhead. Take U.S. Highway 441 north from Cornelia and stay on the main road for 16 miles. From the highway, turn left onto Glen Hardman Road, then right onto Old Historic Highway 441 for one mile to the parking area; Sourwood Trail. Take U.S. Highway 441/state Route 365 north from Cornelia to the Clarkesville exit at SR 197. Turn right onto SR 197. At the second stop sign, turn right onto Dicks Hill Parkway. Go 0.8 mile and turn left onto Lake Russell Road. Go two miles and turn left to Nancytown Lake. Follow the signs to the parking area. The trailhead begins at the dam; Tallulah Gorge Loop Trail. Hike into the 600-foot gorge. Kayaking and in-gorge hiking allowed with permit; Hogpen Gap to Unicoi Gap. Hike from Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway to state Route 75.

Lumpkin County The Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail, the grandaddy trail of them all, stretches more than 2,000 miles from Springer Mountain to Maine. It has several nearby access points including Woody Gap off state Route 60. Lake Zwerner Trail (Dahlonega Reservoir). From Dahlonega’s public square, take East Main Street to the Morrison Moore Parkway intersection and turn left. Dockery Lake Trail. From Dahlonega’s public square take East Main Street to the Morrison Moore Parkway intersection and turn left. Remain on that road until Stonepile Gap. At the fork in the road at the pile of stones, take state Route 60 straight ahead. The sign for Dockery Lake Recreation Area will be on the right side of SR 60; Yahoola Creek Park. From

Dahlonega’s public square take East Main Street, then take a right on Memorial Drive. Go two blocks and turn right on Morrison Moore Parkway. Take the first left onto Mechanicsville Street.

Rabun County Bartram Trail. This 37-mile trail extends across the peak of Rabun Bald to the Chattooga River. Parts of the hike are steep and include strenuous water crossings; Coleman River Trail. With prime fishing access, this 1-mile trail begins about 150 yards north of the Tallulah River campground at the Coleman River bridge; Minnehaha Trail. This 0.4-mile trail follows Fall Branch to Minnehaha Falls; Angel Falls Trail. A 1.6-mile hike that passes by Panther Falls to a lookout below Angel Falls; Hemlock Trail. Begins at Moccasin Creek State Park and follows an old railroad bed for about 1 mile. The hike, which offers good fishing access, ends at Hemlock Falls; Warwoman Dell Nature Trail. This is 0.4-mile loop begins at the end of Warwoman Dell picnic area. The hike offers views of a waterfall and wildflowers; Rabun Bald Trail. A 2.9-mile trail leading to the summit of Rabun Bald, which is Georgia’s second-highest peak. The hike up the mountain is steep; Willis Knob. This 15-mile hiking and horseback riding trail features rugged terrain and views of the Chattooga River;

Chattooga River Trail. A 10.7-mile hike beginning where state Route 76 East crosses the Chattooga River at the Georgia-South Carolina border.

White County Appalachian Trail. You can access the Appalachian Trail in several points in White County. The trails runs along part of the county’s northern border. Two access points with parking is Hog Pen Gap on

Richard Russell Scenic Highway and Unicoi Gap on Ga. Route 75. Raven Cliffs Trail. This much-loved trail parallels a rushing creek the entire way. The 5-mile hike is relatively easy until the final climb up to the falls, which are hidden between two cliffs. But watch your step along the stream; injuries are common. The trailhead is located off Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway, 2.8 miles from Ga. Alternate 75. Dukes Creek Trail. This 2-mile hike is ideal at any time of year. Dukes Creek Trail starts out paved, descends down a tree-lined dirt path as wide as a road, then narrows to switchbacks before reaching the creek. From the observation platform, you’ll see impressive waterfalls from Davis and Dodd creeks, which intersect to form Dukes Creek. The trailhead is off Richard B. Russell, a half-mile east of the Raven Cliffs trailhead. Yonah Mountain Trail. You haven’t truly experienced White County until you’ve scaled its most distinctive summit, 3,166-foot Yonah Mountain. The 5-mile hike is a bit strenuous, but you’ll be rewarded with dazzling views. You may also see technical climbers ascending the granite rock face. But if you’re not roped up, stay away from the cliff’s edge. To get to the trailhead, turn off Ga. 75 North onto Tom Bell Road, then turn on Chambers Road. Unicoi Lake Trail. This 2.5-mile loop trail is the perfect family hike at any time of the year,and it’s especially enjoyable when the leaves change color. You’ll stroll through peaceful forests, cross a beach, and stop at several fishing platforms on the 53acre lake. The trailhead is on Ga. 356 north of Helen, near the Unicoi State Park entrance.

Bulls Sluice came in as No. 3.” Away from the rushing river, paddlers of a different kind cruise the flat lakes on stand-up paddle boards. “People use it for exercise and enjoy getting early in the mornings or late in the evenings, just doing their own thing,” said Seth Poole, co-owner of Anchorage Boat Dock. “It’s a little challenging but once you get up on it and used to, it’s real fun.” Stand-up paddle boards can be rented from the boat dock where Poole said instructions will be provided. Boaters are then sent out with a paddle and wishes of good luck.

Nestled in the mountainsides and valleys of the Chattahoochee National Forest, Rabun County is not found wanting by those who seek a picturesque drive. Take Warwoman Road in Clayton, for instance. The 14-mile Warwoman Road starts at U.S. Highway 441 in a residential neighborhood. Just before it comes to an end at U.S. Highway 28, which connects North Carolina, Georgia and South Carolina, Warwoman Road serpentines through the mountains of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Travelers along Warwoman Road can continue east on U.S. Highway 28 for about eight miles, which will

cross the Chattooga River on the Georgia/South Carolina border. Take a right at state Route 37-196 in Mountain Rest, South Carolina, and another right at U.S. Highway 76. From there, it’s a 12-mile drive back into downtown Clayton. Wolffork Road is a charming drive through the Wolffork Valley in Mountain City and Rabun Gap. Both ends of the nearly nine-mile road connect to U.S. 441. Along its curves, Rabun County farmland is snuggled comfortably away from the hustle and bustle of the busy highway. How can a county celebrate it’s heritage, attractions and talent? The Rabun County Tourism Development Authority thinks it has the answer – a nine-day mega-event celebrating a famous skywalk of 20th-century

aerialist Karl Wallenda. It’s been reported that nearly 30,000 people witnessed Wallenda complete two headstands on his July 18, 1970, skywalk across Tallulah Gorge. Slated for June 19-27, the Tallulah Gorge Skywalk Celebration will honor the 45th anniversary of this achievement. “We are creating experiences that our visitors and our locals will enjoy and remember for a lifetime,” said Teka Earnhardt, the tourism authority’s executive director. “Our goal is to have people want to come back for many years to come to build on all the feelings and memories that will be created due to the Tallulah Gorge Skywalk Celebration.” Although initial plans to have Wal-

lenda’s great-grandson Nik Wallenda walk the gorge fell through, the aerialist’s heir to the tightrope will open the celebration with a meet and greet at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. June 19. He’ll visit the Rabun County Public Library the next day from 9:30-10:30 a.m. to sign his book “Balance.” Three concerts featuring T. Graham Brown, John Michael Montgomery and The Time Jumpers are planned, as are two rodeos, an Old West reenactment of the shoot out at the OK Corral and a chuck wagon cook-off. Rabun County’s highways are crowded with RVs in the summertime, packed with visitors flocking to the area for a natural escape. All campers have to do is open their tent flap or camper door to take in some of the most photo-worthy and captivating views in the region. Campers can book a site for $15 a night and be just steps from Tallulah River, Tate Branch and Sandy Bottoms campgrounds. Johnny Mize museum pays tribute to local legend

Gone, but not forgotten. Since famed baseball legend Johnny Mize died in 1993, his memory has lived on – especially in his hometown of Demorest. Nestled in the National Baseball Hall of Famer’s old stomping grounds is the Johnny Mize Athletic Center and Museum, dedicated in 2000 on the Piedmont College (PC) campus. Since its establishment, the museum has featured prized photographs and memorabilia collected by Mize during his playing career. “I think it’s been a very popular attraction. I see people popping in there all the time,” said PC Public Relations Director David Price. “It’s different in that it’s not all about Johnny Mize, [but] it [features] things

he collected that he thought were important during his career.” Mize was born in 1913 in a house adjacent to PC, where he would later play baseball for the varsity team at age 15, while still in high school. The ballplayer’s professional career would later start in 1936, taking him to the St. Louis Cardinals for six seasons, then the New York Giants for four before signing with the New York Yankees in 1949. After Mize joined the team, the Yankees won five straight World Series titles, and “The Big Cat” was named the 1952 Series Most Valuable Player. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1981. The museum, located at 280 Laurel Ave., is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

‘Friday Night Live’ events promise summer fun in Clarkesville

Friday night fun is in the works for Clarkesville throughout the summer, with different themed Friday Night Live events planned downtown. Sponsored by Clarkesville Main Street, Friday Night Live will be held on the third Friday of each month, April-September. Main Street Manager Mary Beth Horton said the idea came from focus groups conducted to find out what residents wanted to see in Clarkesville. “A common, recurring theme was people wanted after-hours activities,” Horton said. “We do that sometimes

Angie Guthrie, owner of Java Joe’s, had a live band during the first Friday Night Live. “It was a fabulous night,” Guthrie

said. “I was supposed to get one jazz singer, but I got a whole band, and it worked out great. I’m excited about the turnout and the enthusiasm.” The themes for each third Friday – May 15, June 19, July 17, Aug. 21 and Sept. 18 – are still being planned, but will all be music-related. The May 15 event served as a kick off to the popular annual Mountain Laurel Festival and featured a DJ, street dance and fireworks show. Antique auto show set for August at fairgrounds

Antique automobiles and trucks may be the catalyst for car buffs in the Northeast Georgia Antique Auto Region (NGAAR) to gather annually for their August show, but charitable giving is an important end result of getting together. Charitable giving is a focus for the car group, with support going to several local charities and other good causes. “We contribute to the local soup kitchens in Clarkesville, Cornelia and Cleveland,” said Grady Cowart, president of NGAAR. “We also contribute to Relay for Life and give two scholarships to students in auto repair programs at North Georgia Technical College.” The association has one big annual event. This year

is the 38th annual Northeast Georgia Antique Auto Region Car and Truck Show. The show is always held the third weekend in August, Cowart said, this year Aug. 14-16 at the Habersham County Fairgrounds near Clarkesville. Habersham County Clerk of Court David Wall has been an active member of the association for “10 or 15 years.” “I got into old cars when I was about 15 or 16 years old,” Wall said. “The first car was a 1965 [Chevy] Chevelle Super Sport. I wish I still had it.” But what Wall does have are Packards. One is a road ready 1938 touring model. A second Packard has been undergoing restoration “for over eight years,” Wall said.

If you think the beauty of nature can only be appreciated under the sun, then you’ve never been on a fullmoon hike at Tallulah Gorge State Park (TGSP). Interpretive Ranger Jonathan Bast said TGSP has been offering full-moon hikes for the last seven years. “It’s a truly unique experience you can’t get anywhere else,” he said. Bast said the hikes have traditionally attracted 75-80 people, however, the groups were recently limited to

50 people, allowing for a more personal experience with the ranger. After meeting at the Interpretive Center, he said groups are led to Overlooks 2 and 3, before making their descent down 310 stairs to the suspension bridge. What they find there, Bast said, is unforgettable. “That is where we watch the moon rise over the gorge, so we actually time it to see the moon come up over the suspension bridge,” he said.

Dukes Creek is fly-fisherman paradise

Dukes Creek is one of North Georgia’s hidden jewels. The stream has maintained its designation by Trout Unlimited as one of the 100 best in the U.S. for a number of years. Located chiefly inside Smithgall Woods State Park, the fishing is free – with a reservation and a $5 park pass. Since this section of Dukes Creek is a “special regula-

tion trout stream,” the fishing is restricted to catch-and-release, barb-less hooks and artificial lures only. “It is amazing to have this quality of fishing right here in our back yard,” said John Erbele, general manager of Smithgall Woods State Park. Because fish are not harvested, fishing is allowed year-round.

However, the stream is limited to 15 anglers at a time, in addition to guests who may be staying at one of the park’s six cottages. Non-lodging fishing is by reservation only. Reservations can be made for Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday only, two sessions a day, from March through September, and one session a day during the cold months. A fishing shuttle leaves ▶

The stream, not wider than 20 or 30 feet in most places, has shoals, deep pools and flat shallow areas. There are about 4-1/2 miles of Dukes Creek in the 6,000-acre Smithgall Woods State Park. “Clean water, cool temperatures – the combination of features that add up to excellent trout habitat,” Erbele said. A small section of the creek can be accessed through the Chattahoochee National Forest above the park (off the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway.) Harvest is allowed there, but that part of the creek must be accessed through the national forest. No fish can be transported through Smithgall Woods State Park. To reserve a spot on Dukes Creek, call 706-878-3087. Anglers may only have one reservation on the books at a time.

Hardman Farm open for tours

The white two-story farmhouse that anchors the northwest corner at the intersection of state Routes 17 and 75, just south of Helen in Sautee-Nacoochee, is now open for tours Thursday-Sundays, from summer through December. The property, known as the Hardman Farm, is a state historic site. Guided tours are at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Each tour lasts about 90 minutes and involves walking between buildings. The furnishings in the house are

representative of the 1920s era, when it was a working dairy farm owned by Lamartine Hardman, governor of Georgia from 1927 to 1931. “It was one of the first houses in the area to have electricity,” said John Erbele, general manager of Smithgall Woods State Park, which oversees the Hardman Farm historic site. “Nearby Nora Mill was part of the original farm, and electricity was added to the house from the mill in 1911 or 1912.”

The house was built by Capt. James Nichols in 1869. Its design was a copy of Nichols’ brotherin-law’s home near Milledgeville. Nichols built the gazebo atop the Nacoochee Indian mound in 1870. There have been as many as 23 outbuildings on the property, in addition to the Italianate farmhouse. Of those, 17 outbuildings remain. The Nichols family sold the home to Calvin Hunnicutt in 1893, and it was purchased by Hardman in 1903. The state acquired the entire

Bird-watchers flock to Georgia’s mountains

The Northeast Georgia mountains are a bird-watcher’s paradise. With proximity to the vast Chattahoochee National Forest, several state parks, abundant farmland, and numerous ponds, streams and small lakes, you’re almost guaranteed to add more bird species to your “life list.” “The diversity of habitats creates more opportunities for birders,” said Ellen Graham, interpretive specialist for Georgia State Parks. She said many birders choose to stay overnight in or near Helen, because it’s centrally located and

has plenty of hotel rooms and cabins available. “The Helen area is a good base of operations for birding,” Graham said. “It’s a short drive to field trips throughout the region.” The guidebook “Birding Georgia,” by Giff Beaton, recommends several birding “hot spots” in the Northeast Georgia mountains. • Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area, near Amicalola Falls State Park, is designated an “important bird area” by the Audubon Society; • Ivy Log Gap Road, in the Chattahoochee National Forest near

Vogel State Park, runs through upland hardwoods that are known to be breeding grounds for several warbler species – and it is possible to search and listen for birds without even getting out of your car; • For hikers, the Appalachian Trail between Neels Gap and Lake Winfield Scott is an excellent place to look for summer bird species; • Brasstown Bald, Georgia’s highest peak (4,784 feet), and Rabun Bald, the second-highest, offer glimpses of high-elevation birds found nowhere else in Georgia.

Travel back through time touring historical sites in White County

If you want to learn about White County’s past, your first stop has to be the Historic White County Courthouse. Fortunately, it’s easy to find: smack-dab in the middle of Cleveland’s downtown square. “It’s almost like a living history museum,” said Judy Lovell, a longtime member of the White County Historical Society and local history columnist. “You can see how people have lived in the county for the past 150 years. Sautee Nacoochee offers culture, lessons and fun! By Linda Erbele, White County News

The Sautee Nacoochee Center is a thriving cultural hub, tucked into a restored 1928-built schoolhouse, located on a pastoral campus at the crossroads of state Routes 17 and 255. The center comprises three museums, two art galleries, a 100-seat theater, a community hall, outdoor stage and an historic gym. Through its small staff and variety of volunteers, the center offers cultural events, community gatherings, fitness and yoga groups, historic commemorations and more. Maintained by a nonprofit organization dedicated to nurturing creativity and protecting the natural and historic resources of the area, the center holds annual events and numerous classes.

Members and non-members can learn painting, drawing, music, dance and even storytelling. Children’s dance and drama sessions take place after school and during the summer months. Past entertainers have included the Atlanta Ballet, Andy Offut Irwin, the Indigo Girls, Francine Reed, the Atlanta Pops Orchestra and Bread and Puppet Theater. Favorite events include the annual ping-pong tournament, Summer Lawn Party, Jamboree and the Blue Ribbon Biscuit and Bluegrass Festival. “The center has visitors from all over the country and the world,” said Judy Barbour, executive director. “Everyone is welcome.” Theatrical and musical presentations are on the

The brainchild of Tim Boulware, an avid local disc golfer who worked in conjunction with the Lumpkin County Parks YMCA board of representatives to design and implement the course, the Yahoola disc golf course is set inside the multi-use park. It utilizes the scenic valley of the Georgia mountains to give disc golf enthusiasts a

beautiful and fun-filled experience. “Frisbee golf is the most popular sport that no one has heard about,” said Dahlonega local and disc golf enthusiast Ethan Penland. “We sort of just stumbled on to this course,” said Ryan Woodworth of Athens, who frequents the Yahoola course. “I am glad we did because we’ve enjoyed it for over two years now.” The course boasts nine Innova DISCatchers for the front nine and

nine homemade targets for the back nine, giving the course a mix of professionalism and backyard appeal. The course is laid out on a map at the tee box for the first hole, located about 200 yards from the bathroom near the outfield area of the lower baseball field. Tee signs help you locate the next tee with the help of tee indicators scattered throughout the course to point out the way and keep “frolfers” on track. The course is very family-friendly and an excellent starting course for newer players to hone their skills, making it a perfect fit for the family activities that routinely happen at Yahoola. So, if you are looking for a new family-fun experience or just want to play golf without the green fees and cart rentals, head to Yahoola Creek Park and strike gold with the Frisbee golf course.

Stacy Armstrong knows a thing or two about kayaking and what a good put-in spot is. He and his buddies have floated every river in Northeast Georgia. A favorite spot is located on state Route 9 in Dawson County, just north of the intersection of Dawson Forest Road, on the Etowah River. “We’ve put in at several places on the Etowah, and this is by far the easiest,” Armstrong said. And, with good reason. A wooden staircase leads kayakers straight into the river. The

Scenic Etowah River Park was established in Dawson in 2008. This put-in spot is much more than just that — there is also a covered picnic area, swings next to the river, and even a grill. The take-out point is a three- to four-hour float south, and you can pull out your boat at a concrete pad on Kelly Bridge Road. Armstrong’s buddies, “Boxcar” and Dave, plan to float the length of the Etowah this summer. “It may be the only river that begins and ends in Georgia,” Armstrong said. “That’s just cool.”

Another cool put-in spot is off Amicalola Church Road in northwestern Dawson County. “This area has the cleanest, most pristine waters I’ve seen,” kayaker and former Dawson County Commissioner Gary Pichon said. “It’s not that easy to get to, but it’s worth hauling your kayak. The put-in spot is located off a gravel road, just south of Afton Road where it crosses the Amicalola Creek. For additional information, see etowahwatertrail.org.

Old barns, young cows, gristmills and wide open green spaces can be enjoyed from the comfort of your car on the beautiful, low-traffic, back roads of Dawson County. “Although we’re only 45 minutes from Atlanta, take a drive off [state Route] 400, and you’ll find yourself among some of the most beautiful vistas in Georgia,” said Christie Haynes, president of the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce. “Depending on the season, you could see fields of pumpkins, an

endless sea of sunflowers, majestic rivers, picturesque mountains and colorful fall foliage.” Pack up the kids and a picnic lunch and head into old town Dawsonville on state Route 53. Wind your way around Georgia’s oldest working courthouse and continue west. You’ll pass a Dollar General and that’ll be your last look at city-life before turning right onto Howser Mill Road. Locals will tell you the two dark brown, barn-looking structures

you’ll see on your right, about a mile down the road, were critical for bringing electricity to the area and for grinding corn. At the end of Howser Mill Road, turn right onto state Route 136 and go approximately two miles. When you see Keith Evans Road on your right, turn right, and be ready to roll down your windows and breathe in the fresh country air. Around Back at Rocky’s Place a folk art mecca

By definition, folk art is highly decorative designs with bright colors and simple arrangements. The 300 self-taught artisans at Around Back at Rocky’s Place truly encompass this definition. Stepping into the larger of two buildings, a visitor is often heard to gasp, according to Tracey Burnett, who, along with Robin Blan opened the folk art gallery in 2002. Rocky’s history is as colorful and funky as the artwork itself.

“The gallery was originally a lawnmower tool shed,” Burnett said. “We’d take art out of the shed and put it in the gallery yard.” The way art is displayed is unique as well: It’s hung on the chain link fence. There is something for everyone, from the colorful paintings of local artists Dorethey Gorham, BlueJay and Cornbread, to the pottery face jugs and metal sculptures which adorn the lawn.

Amicalola Falls The stunning Amicalola Falls, located in Amicalola Falls State Park, is 729 feet tall. It was named Amicalola, which means “tumbling waters,” by the Cherokee. Amicalola Falls State Park is located on state Route 52. Bearden Falls Bearden Falls is in the Chattahoochee National Forest. There is no designated trail. From Dahlonega, take state Route 52 West for 8 miles to Nimblewill Church Road on the right. Follow Nimblewill Road for 4.5 miles to the national forest boundary and continue on FS28-2 for 2 miles, where the road begins to climb the side of Frosty Mountain on the way to Nimblewill Gap. Pull off to the right to begin the hike to the falls.

Cochrans Falls Cochrans Falls cascades approximately 600 feet from peak to base. The falls descend from Frosty Mountain and cascade before changing to a series of smaller cascades. Go west on state Route 52 from Dahlonega 14.5 miles to the second entrance for Wesley Chapel Road, just inside Dawson County. Turn right on Wesley Chapel Road and, after nearly a mile, turn left on Dan Fowler Road. Go 1.2 miles, turn left on Blackhawk Road and go about 2 miles. Fall Creek Falls Fall Creek Falls, located in Dawson County, is a set of four waterfalls, the second and largest of which is more than 75 feet high. Follow state Route 136 to the Dawson/Pickens County line and turn south on Monument Road.

The trailhead is 3 miles on the left at the kiosk. Follow Tobacco Pouch Trail 0.3 mile to the junction with Fall Creek Trail, then go 3.3 miles.

Habersham County

Cascade Falls A moderate-to-difficult one-way hike, Rhododendron Trail starts at the historic Chenocetah Fire Tower in Cornelia and descends down to Lake Russell in Mt. Airy. The trail to the almost hidden Cascade Falls is 1.75 miles in. The complete trail to Lake Russell is approximately 2.6 miles. From Cornelia’s Main Street, turn onto Wyly Street. Across from Cornelia City Park, turn onto Chenocetah Drive and follow road to the top of the mountain. The trail starts on the left, across from the marble entrance sign. Follow the blue blazes.

Head north on U.S. Highway 441 past Tallulah Falls, turn left onto Lake Rabun Road and drive around the north side of the lake. Turn left about one mile past the Rabun Beach Recreation Area, crossing Seed Lake Dam and following Bear Gap Road around the lake for about 1-1/2 miles. Hike Fall Branch Trail about a half-mile to the falls.

Cane Creek Falls Located on the grounds of Camp Glisson, Cane Creek Falls is open to the public during daylight hours except when camp is in session. You must check in at the visitors center prior to visiting the falls. From Dahlonega, follow Business U.S. Hwy. 19 and state Route 60 north for 2 miles. Turn left at the sign for Camp Glisson (across from

National Forest. Take U.S. Highway 19 13.7 miles to Mt. Piscah Church Road and turn left. Travel 2.6 miles to the falls, which will be on the left. Parking is available on the right. Black Falls Black Falls is on the Etowah River and is on the property of Camp Frank D. Merrill, 11 miles north of Dahlonega. Access may be restricted. Check with the visitors center before attempting to visit the falls. To reach the camp, travel north on U.S. Highway 19 for 2 miles and turn left onto Camp Wahsega Road. Follow road for 9 miles to the entrance. Blood Mountain Creek Three falls flow from Blood Mountain Creek. Take U.S. Highway 19 north 13.7 miles and turn left onto Mt. Piscah Church Road. Travel 3.3 miles to the ford across Crow Mountain Creek. Continue for 1 mile to Blood Mountain Creek. A difficult and unmaintained, but well-used trail follows the left side of the creek. The lower falls are about 100 yards from the road. The middle falls are another 50 yards upstream.

Rabun County

Hemlock Falls This 15-foot falls is on a scenic trail directly across from Moccasin Creek State Park. Children may be interested in the Lake Burton Fish Hatchery next door to the campgrounds. From Clarkesville, take state Route 17 to Alternate SR 255. When this road dead ends, turn right onto SR 255. In Batesville, turn left onto SR 197, driving past LaPradeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s at Lake Burton to Moccasin Creek State Park. You might also drive SR 197 North all the way from Clarkesville and

110 stop at public portions of the Soque River, which both starts and ends in Habersham County. Panther Falls/Angel Falls These falls are close to the Rabun Beach Recreational Area. Turn right into Area 2 of the recreation area. Drive back along the loop road to the sign designating the trailhead. Panther Falls is located about a half mile up the trail, while Angel Falls is another 600 yards farther down the trail. Becky Branch Falls (Tallulah Ranger District) This 20-foot cascade is located just five minutes from downtown Clayton and is easily accessible. From Clayton, drive east on Warwoman Road for 2.8 miles and park on left side of road by branch. Walk up the right side of branch on the trail for about 200 yards to a bridge at base of falls.

FLUXUS 2015 is coming to Hall County By Julie Butler Colombini, Gainesville Parks and Recreation

What in the world is FLUXUS? It’s a state of change, a flow of creativity. FLUXUS is also the new name of last year’s Festival of Museums, set for May 30, a change accurately reflecting the diversity of experiences Gainesville’s cultural attractions offer. “We want to encourage all of our guests to flow from one Gainesville attraction to another, we want to change the misconception that history and art are boring and not interactive, we want to pique your interest when we say FLUXUS 2015,” said Deb Gregson, tourism manager with Gainesville CVB Authority.

When you are in FLUXUS during this event, you can expect to find a unique fusion of seven venues for one special day. Visitors may start at any of the participating attractions – Beulah Rucker Museum, Brenau University art galleries, Elachee Nature Science Center, historic Piedmont Hotel, Interactive Neighborhood for Kids, Northeast Georgia History Center and The Quinlan Visual Art Center. FLUXUS 2015 will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, May 30, and will have free or reduced entry at each venue. “It will be a full day of interactive experiences for the whole family

that involve arts and crafts, music, museum, theater, living history interpretation, hands-on activities and a gnome hunt,” Gregson added. Win prizes such as a week of Summer Day Camp from The Quinlan Visual Arts Center and Northeast Georgia History Center, Splash Zone tickets for a family of four, or an annual family pass to Interactive Neighborhood for Kids.
